This museum has some beautiful collections, especially of religious relics and royal treasures, which are well presented. The quality of the pieces is very impressive, and a testament to Thailand's rich history. Tickets for foreigners are 200 baht, and it is worth noting you cannot take food, drinks or any bag larger than a handbag inside. It is also worth considering wearing shoes which are easy to take on and off, as 5/6 exhibitions require you to take your shoes off. The only improvements I would suggest for this museum is perhaps providing more context for the pieces and their historical settings. I am a qualified archaeologist, but not being overly familiar with Thai history I found it hard to understand some pieces. Perhaps more visual aids such as maps or recreating historical scenes would be useful?

The National Museum was very much as anticipated, a trove of important cultural treasures and a visual narrative showing the history of Thailand, Siam and its predecessor nations. Beginning with exhibits of pottery, bronze and other artifacts from its prehistoric roots and continuing almost to the present day there are exhibits depicting the art of every period. Fittingly, for a nation so rich in Buddhist history, a large percentage of the exhibits are Buddhas in many forms. I especially appreciated how the connections with Khmer and other surrounding cultures were presented.

The museum display many cultural heritage of Thailand. From the puppet shows, metal work, wood work, and even the king’s thrones. Unfortunately, other than seeing nice relics, I wasn’t able to learn about the complex history of Thailand. I wish it was organized such in a timeline manner or in stories that’s easier to follow.

Great museum to learn more about Thai history and the king's of Thailand as well. You will a so understand why the people here are always healthy, why they're using different Herb for food.and much more. All rooms with air-conditioning, but not to cold. Price 200 baht for foreigners is really fair. After museum go to Arno's a restaurant at river, 5/8 mins to walk. Very good meat in burger, steak or pizza. Really good quality and fair price. After that cross the river with little ship for 5 baht (behind university) to other side and visit market close too river.

Have visited Bangkok numerous times and this was the first time I opted to visit the museum. Rather than wandering aimlessly around we joined the free 1.5 hour guided tour (they have English, German, French and Japanese - only Wednesday and Thursday morning at 9.30am, Japanese only one of those days I believe). It was excellent, gave the highlights and explained the context of some of the buildings and displays. Thumbs up. Wish I had done it sooner!

The number of photos (667) we took at the museum is testament to how good it is. While not located conveniently, a taxi or grab app ride easily brought us here. Buying a ticket at the counter is easy though only cash accepted. Get a map from the counter to plan your day. Then be prepared to spend at least 3 hours here to really enjoy the exhibits. Take a break to refresh at the restaurant, its not too bad. There are clean toilets at each of the buildings. Our recommendation is to visit the main exhibits at rooms 601-614 first, with highlight being the recent coronation of the new king. Then the building with the funerary chariots. There are two other themed exhibits: one tracing prehistory till Lopburi period. Recommend to walk through chronologically from rooms 401-406. The other building on the right with theme of various dynastic and state histories (501-505) is also a must see.

Although I enjoyed most of the museums I visited in SE Asia, I was often surprised that it only took a few hours to cover them, including other national museums. So it was a wonderful surprise to visit Thailand’s National Museum and spent a lovely five to six hours exploring such a rich and deep collection! The holdings are spread across a number of buildings, all of which are worth at lest a stop. The two history sections are outstanding - and thorough without overwhelming - while the arts collection is just stunning! Well presented with lots of English descriptions, this is a great overall look at Thai history and culture. Full disclosure, I’m a historian that spends hours in museums. You can easily cover this museum in less time, but it really should be a “must see” while in Bangkok. My thanks to the curators whose love of their artifacts and culture are evident in the exhibits!

Other than preserving and displaying Thai artifacts dating from the Dvaravati, Srivijaya, to Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods, the museum also displays extensive collections of regional Asian Buddhist Arts such as Indian Gandhara, Chinese Tang, Vietnamese Cham, Indonesian Java, and Cambodian Khmer arts.

Worth visiting! Bangkok National Museum is a cultural gem that offers a deep dive into Thailand's history and art. Its extensive collection showcases an impressive array of artifacts providing a glimpse into the nation's past. Visitors can explore various exhibits, each telling a unique story about Thailand's diverse heritage. While some areas might benefit from more interactive displays, the museum's overall experience is enlightening and well worth a visit for anyone seeking to uncover Thailand's fascinating culture The entrance fee is just 200thb, but they accept only cash. Why not pay by card in 2023?

National Museum Bangkok is another pride of Thai history. I went to see it in the evening and the arrangement and lighting were beautiful, not inferior to famous museums abroad. If you are really interested in this, you must come. And most importantly, you need to have time if you like it. Because if you really want to see it, 3-4 hours is not enough. There are many exhibition points, so you need to spend time here all day. The place is beautiful, clean, spacious, and air-conditioned. There are video descriptions, such as the steps of pearl inlay work and Benjarong work. Then you will realize that each piece is very detailed. It felt so cheap when I knew the steps of making it. You can take pictures inside, but you are not allowed to use flash or take videos. There are restaurants outside called Lang Wang. Thank you to the people who created this place. When you come, you will know that they have taken care of every detail. The quality is comparable to international museums. Ancient artifacts or historical treasures, such as Buddha images or King Ramkhamhaeng's inscriptions, are well-preserved. They are divided according to the era and are still open to the public who are interested in seeing the real thing. The information is complete in Thai/English and is attached to each piece. It is air-conditioned and comfortable to walk around. The lighting is well-arranged for taking pictures. Everything is great.

The best museum in Thailand without a doubt, and all contained within a collection of beautiful traditional 18th Century Thai buildings, once used as the Palace of the Deputy Kings. You can spend a few hours here going through the different galleries. The Chapel is really lovely and the main audience hall with it's exhibition of Thai history and Art is superb. There truly isn't enough I could write here, about this museum, to do justice to it. One of the many galleries has the most beautiful collection of Mother of Pearl inlaid artifacts. A must visit if you're coming to Bangkok.

The national museum is interesting if you like learning abit about Thai history and also to see various items of previous royal life. I did enjoy walking through it and looking at the various items and reading about them as I walked through. If your English speaking then everything is in Thai and English. They allow you to take photos but they will not allow you to film inside the buildings. It was 200 bhat to enter for non Thai people and 30 bhat for Thai people to enter. I thought it was a interesting place overall to visit.

This is a cultural event. Somewhat spread out it is a building complex filled with historical artifacts and sculptures. A visit helps you appreciate how the kingdom evolved over time and the influence of the various kings to modern day Thailand. Expert tip - not heavily trafficked and a lot to see in a single day. Weekdays means school tours, just flow around them. Go on a weekend? Each building has expeditions that are distinctive - try to visit them all.

A must to visit, strongly recommend for both Thais & Foreigners. I think this is one of the top museum in Thailand. I recommend to spare your times at least 2 hours as many important antiques show there. Some you cannot see from other museums. The museum opens only day time. However, for special events, they open at night. Please check the time before you go. Both day & night times are beautiful.

Main Exhibitions are good, most of them have some descriptions and interactive features. Take about 2 hours to explore all the main exhibitions. Time-limited Exhibitions are changed every 2-3 months, worth visiting. There are a small coffee and a souvenirs shop inside. Good and clean toilets.

Nice to discover and learn more about the history of Thailand. Consider at least 2 hours to see everything relatively quickly. If you like to take your time and really spend time of each piece, then better plan a full day trip.

The national museum is surprisingly a great place for visit in Bangkok. Located on a historic estate, the buildings have their charms and breeze from the past. Really recommended for both locals and foreigners to learn and appreciate Thai history and culture. The museum has been renovated, professionally improved and organised, since the last time I visited 5 years ago (though, some buildings are still under renovation). Displayed objects are stunningly good and captured most of Thailand history and events from past to present. For museum lovers, could spend at least half a day.

I visited the first time in 2013 and must admit that my last visit was amazing! It's fully renewed, clean, with AC, good explanations in Thai and English, few screens with videos for extra information. I joined the (free) French guided tour and it was so worth it! Even after 10 years in Thailand I learnt so much. Really recommend to tourists and residents.

We were lucky to have joined a guided tour unintentionally because we made it before a group started. Sarah was such a kind guide, and she accommodated questions even from my silly and talkative 5-year old niece. The collection was truly enormous and very rich to digest in a single visit, and we could for three hours unfortunately. I would have stayed longer if not for my senior citizen mom and my niece. No doubt, the museum is a testimony to how much Thai people are proud of their cultural heritage and history.

The National Museum of Bangkok is an perfect place to learn about the history and culture of Thailand. The exhibits cover different periods of Thailand's history, from ancient times to modern day. You can see many interesting artifacts, such as ancient treasures, Buddha statues, traditional costumes, and more. The museum provides facilities for people with disabilities. It's a large area with several buildings, so I would recommend budgeting around 3 hours for a visit to the museum. Note that in some areas, you are required to take off your shoes. You can purchase tickets at the door for 200 baht. This is a must-visit place if you want to learn more about Thailand and its culture.

This is an excellent museum to visit, featuring many interesting exhibits of historical and cultural significance. There is enough stuff to see and learn about to spend a whole day here. Signs feature Thai script and English writing. There are restaurants on site as well as street food vendors along the perimeter of the museum's gate. If you feel tired from walking around, you can relax in a state of the art, panoramic theater. When I visited that theater in April of 2023, there were two productions being screened: one about the afterlife and one about an important time of travel in the history of Korea.

Absolutely fantastic museum complex, if a bit confusing on the layout. At 200 baht pp, it’s a steal for how much you can see. All captions are translated into English. I spent 3 hours here (!!) and could have easily spent another hour. Incredibly interesting information. Be forewarned you’ll have to take your shoes off for some buildings and building sections- can be a bit annoying but c’est la vie. Photos allowed. The royal chariots are especially cool.

For people who love to know the history of a place, the museum is a perfect place to gain this knowledge. The entrance fee was 200 baht per person. It was easy navigating the museum, which is not in only one building, but in many buildings, depending on the display. The displays were well arranged by time periods. I particularly liked the displays on their massive golden chariots. I would recommend visiting the national museum when in Thailand to know more about their rich history and culture.

There are many wonders in the world, today, I discovered one more wonder inside the National Museum Of Royal Barge, in Bangkok. What I saw today was absolutely one of the world wonders. It's so amazing these Royal hand made vehicles which built specially to carry and celebrate the new Thai kings and Queens. One of these stunning vehicles was 13.7 ton and 11.20 meter height, needed 216 strong people to pull and move it around. Surely, what I saw today was so unique, very special, and should be added to the 7 wonders of the world. By the way, the museum is open every day from 9 am till 4,00 pm. Closed on Wednesday. Thai people pay only 60 Bhatt for the ticket. Forginers pay 350 Bhatt, including the Royal Barge museum. It's not far from the Grand Palace in Bangkok. 29 December 2021

Focus on the strengths of the collection. Rejoice that there is a battered Sarnath Buddha and a legendary Sri Vijaya bronze torso. Try to find the Pala bronze from Bangladesh that was discovered in Thailand. Look at the ancient beads. Cry not about what is in the Guimet. Focus on the masterpieces. Have a great time. If you meet a Buddhist monk - take off your hat and Wai ! Enjoy the Jataka murals in the temple at the entrance… afterwards go to Restaurant Jai Fai vicinity … have some street food and pad Thai. compose a lovely day. Look at my other reviews for wonderful things to do in Bangkok and beyond …

This is the best place to visit for a stunning introduction to history. In particular the collection pre-17th century is simply amazing. Towering Buddhist and Hindu statues dating from the 7th century, as well as big pots and small tools excavated from pre-history make this a fascinating and beautifully done up museum. In addition, the grounds themselves are a sight, and the volunteer guide, Frederic, took some 1h to introduce this former residence of the Viceroy. He was so knowledgeable and engaging in his tour. Some photos here of the stunning collection.

2023.9.23 Sat noon. It was a great decision to go to the museum at noon since it was so hot and started to rain around 2-3pm. I am a museum person so the National Miseum would be a recommendation for whom’s new to Thailand and royal family history. Huge collections of Buddhism over time. To walk through the cultural relies and read the billboards, it took me at least 3 hours. The summary is highly recommended. Cute cats are a plus.

A great place to learn about the history of Thailand! A lot of interesting artefacts and plenty of educational plaques in English to read. Generally not too busy either, so you can have exhibits to yourself. However don’t come here if you don’t like seeing Buddhas, as about 80% of the museum are Buddha statues and figurines.

The Bangkok National Museum (Thai: พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ พระนคร, RTGS: Phiphitthaphanthasathan Haeng Chat Phra Nakhon) is the main branch museum of the National Museums in Thailand and also one of the largest museums in Southeast Asia. It features exhibits of Thai art and history. It occupies the former palace of the vice king (or Front Palace), set between Thammasat University, and the National Theater, facing Sanam Luang.

(Translated by Google) It is located between Thammasat University and Khaosan, so it might be a good idea to look at it together with Wat Pho and Wat Phra Kaew. However, it is a very spectacular museum with a large number of royal arts and crafts on display. If you are fascinated by the fine decoration and the stylish design, it will take a couple of hours, so it is recommended to allow for a certain amount of time. Personally, the crafts of Raden work and the floats used for the funeral of the royal family were the highlights. Next time, I definitely want to watch it on a Japanese guided tour. (Translated by Google) There is a bulletin board that shows Thailand's self-esteem toward China, saying, "Siam and China communicated on an equal footing." In fact, even in the Qing dynasty, he has made tribute 50 times from Emperor Kangxi to Emperor Xianfeng. It seems that he also attended Korea, who made a tribute to the Qing dynasty 600 times, so it's fun to imagine various things. The last tribute envoy in 1853, and two years later, in 1855, signed a bowling treaty with Britain. Like Japan, Siamese is entering the modern era. HUGE!!! And in every sense of the word a museum!! If you love history, culture and archeology.. you just found your dig!  Wear easy shoes..(you will be doing a lot of on and off here..) Nearly every topic and era in Thai history is explored, common and uncommon. Artifacts from nearly 10 000 years ago (estimsted) to something as recent as  the funeral of King  Bhumibol Adulyadej...  From music to child birth, events, beliefs, superstitions. Overall a series of very well curated exhibits with more construction and expansions underway ( 23 March 2022 when I visited some parts were closed for renovation, upgrades)..  walking distance from several other sites, palaces and temples including the infamous Khaosan Road...  you can easily spend your entire day here if history is your thing.

From outside it look like a teeny tiny place. But it actually a lot bigger than I thought. There are like 5-6 buildings inside for you to roam around and if you’re a history buff you can spend half a day here easily. Probably the best museum in Thailand. Downside is there is not much information given. Most of the room have air conditioning, so you can pretty walk in peace. Price 200 Baht or around USD 6 not bad.

The best introduction to art is to stroll through a museum. The more art you see, the more you'll learn to define your own taste.” “A museum is a place where one should lose one's head.” “A museum has to renew its collection to be alive, but that does not mean we give on important old works. A decent museum but kind of on a small side, I expected more from a National Museum. Still, the price of admission is low and the exhibits are nice enough. You can learn quite a bit about Thai history and customs as there are English translations for most of the pieces and exhibits. The museum is not crowded at all, which makes it a pleasant place to spend a couple of hours.

This museum was truly awe-inspiring. At the time of our visit, two buildings we closed for renovations, and it still took us about 5 hours to see everything. The Buddhisawan Chapel was incredible. In the main buildings, be sure to keep an eye out for the wooden shutters. The paintings on these were some of the most interesting pieces in the whole museum. The content of the museum focuses on the history of Buddhist Thailand.

This was a great experience with amazing insights into Thailands past. The exhibitions were thorough, well explained and pretty damn fascinating. The fact that parts of the museum was built in an old palace makes it all that better and a lot more "real". I leaned a lot about the origins of Thailand and how the country got to where it is culturally. Would recommend of there isn't anything really pressing and you have a good three hours to spare.

Amazing buildings, red wooden house and temples. Huge collections of prehistoric to nowadays Thai artifacts, textiles, pottery, architecture, archaeological sites etc.... very well presented with English explanation. You can easily 3 hours if your legs can take it. I would suggest taking a tuk tuk or a taxi as it is quite far from public transport. Very informative and enjoyable visit to prepare you for Thailand culture!

A very beautiful Thai museum . The arichitecture is very well design and gives the feeling of Thai culture. It is worth to take a walk and admire the beauty of the decorations. When I visited the museum has a hall that shows the story and statue of the Chinese king. I reccomend that if you have a chance you should visit this place

A great destination for photographers. Big-sized backpack is not allowed here so it's recommended you enter the exhibition with only one camera; wide-aperture lens with f1.8 would work better in low light or you shoot at high ISOs. Entrance fee is not so expensive.

During the visit of National Museum of Bangkok it was understand that this Buddha's image named Phuttha Sihing was created in Sri Lanka around 157 A.D. and was brought to Thailand in 1307 to Sukhothai. According to the curator, in every year, before songkran festival (Thai new year) a replica of this Phuttha Sihing bring out side to ask good luck for Thai new year. Every time when take outside of this replica of Phuttha Sihing, its rain.

With the Palace right next to it and does not allow shorts we came by The National Museum and found this is quite interesting spot most tourist or local might missed Bag check and shorts allowed! You can walk slowly from each exhibit room or buildings some require you take off your shoes Many stature and historical art works can be found along the way and can spend you 2-3 hours if you explore it slowly

(Translated by Google) Suggested - Walk slowly, see and read / The Bangkok National Museum is located in the area that was part of the Palace of the Bowon Sathan Mongkol (Wang Na) / There is a lot of artifacts showing of national value. Recommendations - Slowly walk through all the rooms as this museum has much more to see than what its outside appearance shows. This museum sits on the location of the old Bavornsathanmongkol Palace (Front Palace), the royal residence of the heirs apparent to the throne during the reigns of King Rama I - V. There are loads and loads of antiques of national heritage being displayed inside this. Pros - Admission is very cheap (30 baht for Thai citizens / 200 baht for foreigners) / There is a sign explaining the details of each point well displayed. There are staff in every room. Can inquire about / part of the recently renovated is beautiful work (air-conditioned, cool) / large, spacious place It would take more than half a day to walk around. What to expect - Entrance fees is very very reasonable (฿ 30 for Thais and ฿ 200 for foreigners). There are signs explaining details of all display items everywhere. Also there are curators presence in every room who can be asked to explain (probably only in Thai) about items displayed in that particular room. The museum has recently been renovated (almost all of the rooms are air conditioned. This is a huge museum requiring about half a day to completely go through. Complaints - parking is a little too little. But you can get there by public transport, such as buses, boats, etc. / (from a brief walk). Don be surprised - There are not that many parking spaces. However, the museum is accessible by many modes of public transport such as public bus, boat, etc. (From my brief walkthrough) the museum store does not offer interesting souvenirs specially made for the museum. PS - Unfortunately 1 because there is little time for this. Therefore can't walk around Probably have to petals many more times / Unfortunately, 2 was not "big head" because the restoration was not finished. PS - Will have to revisit again and again as there wasn enough time to go through the entire museum today. Also wanted to see the “Big Head” but that section is still under renovation. There was the Front Palace here, the place for viceroy of Siam whose name is Pinklao, the younger brother of King Rama IV whose palace called Grand Palace. Then, you will find soon a beautiful Thai style building in the centre of the land, this was the chapel. There exists a lot of historical exhibits such as chariot, coffin, Buddha image, traditional crafts, dresses, battle arms, music instruments, etc. Those are put to several buildings inside of the land. When you feel to take a rest, you can find cafe at the depth of this land. Strongly recommend to visit here to learn more about Thai culture, practically. It is worth more than 200 Baht fee as of March, 2021.

Decent museum with a lot of Thai artifacts. However , not everything is available in English, so you cannot create end to end story about Thai history. Some exhibitions are closed. And to be frank , I found several mistakes. For example, Russian-Japanese is dated 1894-1895 when in reality it was 1904-1905

I was pleasantly surprised as to the quality and write ups in their collection. I thought I would be able to traverse the musuem in one visit, but, I only managed to get about half way through in my 5 hour visit. The museum exhibits gave me a much better understanding of ancient times in the region and how the Thai culture was influenced from India/China. The grammer/description in the write ups that are displayed with the artifiacts were excellent. Though the museum isn't large by European standards, I do feel that the quality is as high as with other museums I've visted including the British Museum, The Louvre, and The Vatican museum. I recommend that museum goers drop by the National Museum Bangkok.

Huge museum complex with lots to see, by which I mean 15 buildings worth of historical items. I was impressed by the range of items - from puppets and musical instruments, to ceramics, to scale models of military battles and full size battle elephants, to the ceremonial artifacts from the royal family. I had recently been to Chiang Mai and to Lop Buri building my chronological knowledge of the Thai monarchy and this museum helped tie together a lot of that knowledge. The throne collection was interesting because of the cultural similarities for each King, but you can see the changes in construction materials and visuals provided a sense of time and personality of each monarch. I visited on a public holiday. It wasn't busy but the museum seemed to close a bit early. As you enter the museum complex gate, turn to the left and you will see the puff shop cafe, gift shop and ticket booth. You must check your backpacks and large bags, mobile phones and cameras are ok... No flash photos. Wear comfortable shoes, some buildings are temples, and you need to take off shoes before entering those buildings.

A beautiful, huge museum (or more like museumS) with great exhibits where you can learn about Thai culture and even archeology! Each building in the complex features different exhibits. I really enjoyed the exhibit on the Prehistoric World in Thailand! We were tight on time so we didn’t get to fully explore all the exhibits, so I would recommend 2-3 hours if you want to see everything. We bought our tickets on the spot at the ticketing office (200 baht per pax).

Great museum. Lots a building to explore and learn. No video, only photos. What I didn't like is they stopped admitting people at 4 pm and kicked everyone out at the same time. I so I you come at 3:50 they will sell you a ticket and kick you out 10 minutes later. Also, at least for people who are already inside at least give them like half an hour to finish seeing the exhbits.
