Could not recommend highly enough. Fantastic, beautiful, and simple. It wasn't overly crowded and the paths were stunning. There's a shop that sells tea made from the herbs grown there. It's a peaceful place with a good view of the city. I loved it so much I went twice, and would definitely make a point to go again if I ever return to Salerno.

Stunning garden with 5 terraces and lots of history. Beautiful views of the city. Great explanation of the way botany and medicine were linked and how doctors used to treat illnesses. Feels like a hidden gem as even in the height of summer so few people were there

Beautiful, tranquil and well kept gardens. The views from the top terrace are wonderful however only accessible by steps. Details on each plant can be accessed via QR code, but the information is only in Italian.

The Giardino della Minerva, also known as the Orto Botanico di Salerno (Botanical Garden of Salerno), is a historic and beautiful garden located in the city of Salerno, Italy. It is one of the oldest botanical gardens in Europe and has a rich history dating back to the medieval period. The Giardino della Minerva was originally established in the early 14th century, around 1309, by Matteo Silvatico, a physician, and botanist. Silvatico was the personal physician to Queen Sancha of Aragon, who ruled over the Kingdom of Naples. The garden was initially created as a medicinal herb garden, and its primary purpose was to cultivate and study medicinal plants for the benefit of the royal court. Over the centuries, the garden evolved and expanded, serving various purposes. It was used for educational and research purposes by scholars and botanists. In the 16th century, the garden was expanded and reorganized by the famous botanist and physician Luca Ghini. During the 18th century, the garden was further developed, and its layout was influenced by the principles of the Baroque style. It became a place of both scientific research and leisure, with a focus on aesthetics. Today, the Giardino della Minerva is not only historically significant but also a place of great beauty. It covers an area of approximately 1.2 hectares and is divided into various sections, each dedicated to different types of plants. Some of the key features and areas within the garden include: 1. **Medicinal Garden**: The garden still maintains its original purpose, with a rich collection of medicinal plants. Visitors can learn about the historical uses of these plants in medicine. 2. **Historical Architecture**: The garden features beautiful historic structures, including a Baroque-style pavilion and decorative fountains, which add to its charm. 3. **Terraces and Panoramic Views**: The garden is built on terraces, providing visitors with panoramic views of the city of Salerno and the Gulf of Salerno. 4. **Heritage Trees**: The garden is home to some ancient and remarkable trees, including centuries-old olive trees. 5. **Educational Activities**: The garden hosts educational programs and activities, making it a place for learning about botany, history, and traditional herbal medicine. 6. **Botanical Collections**: In addition to medicinal plants, the garden contains a diverse collection of other botanical specimens, including exotic and rare plants. 7. **Cultural Events**: The Giardino della Minerva is also a venue for cultural events, such as concerts and exhibitions, which further enhance its appeal. The Giardino della Minerva is not only a place of historical significance but also a serene and beautiful spot where visitors can immerse themselves in the history of botany and appreciate the natural beauty of the garden. It serves as a living testament to the long tradition of botanical study and appreciation in Italy.

What a delight with beautiful views, picturesque garden walkways, and even better, the elevator works to whisk you up to this special place. The video about the site's history has English subtitles, so you can learn the unique history. Do not miss it.

Amazing garden with a lovely view of the city and the sea below πŸͺ΄ the walk up to the garden is beautiful and scenic. my friends and I spent a lot of time venturing the garden, reading all about the plants, following their irrigation system, admiring the fish, and taking in the beauty of it all very picturesque place to be ❀️

Disappointed as it was closed for maintenance. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE HERE. We made the mistake of simply googling the location and driving up. It’s really steep, narrow and Zero parking. WALK only from ???? I wish this was made more clear when we googled it. Closed and not driveable.

Good for herbalists. Small range of exhibits but good for a visit with coffee by the terrace. Gravity drainage system with retaining pools and small channels.

This place is an unique botanical garden where you can enter for just 1.5€ if you're at college (we are students from Croatia and the lady who sells tickets didn't even ask for a Student Card as a proof). The news is that you need to show your GREEN PASS. They will check it before enter. ⚠️ The garden isn't big, we spent there about 45 minutes but it's nice and the view is amazing. πŸ™οΈ I would return here! πŸ’š

Cool place in hot summer day. Lots of steps to go there. But the views will recompense all the sweat. Ticket cost 3 euro per adult.

Beautiful place to stroll, admire plants and the historical significance of the garden. We went twice since our Airbnb was right above it! We stopped at the tea bar inside for granita 🍧 and gifts. Absolutely recommend if you admire gardens and a cold granita or tea :)
