Some displays were quite outdated, providing stereotypical descriptions of a homogenous Asian or African ‘other’, while some of the information provided, such as depicting the impact of colonization through the clothing of Herero women while failing to mention the genocide against their people, left me aghast. Various beautiful objects in the permanent collection were also covered in a thick layer of dust. It’s clear that the museum, like many others, urgently needs to confront its colonial legacy and review/reimagine the way it contextualizes exhibits. I'm hopeful that the ongoing renovation might contribute to just that.

However, that never felt negative. Within the Asia Exhibition I was astonished by many of the relics that were shown. I did not get beyond the ground floor due to late arrival so I'll have to visit again and would highly recommend everyone to give it a try (staff is really friendly too) .
