Given the less than positive attitude of many German people towards modern emigrants to Germany, I think it would be beneficial for the museum to stop looking back to the past exclusively and to actively address the present. Use the past to build sympathy and then confront the visitor with what brings people to Germany today. I find it darkly amusing that the signs are mostly in proper German that an actual immigrant might have trouble reading before learning the language well, and that the English signs are inadequate. The whole experience makes me feel that Germans have a lot of historical events they haven't processed well.

Ironically as it is an immigrant museum, there is not much information in English and the audio guide is very robotic. The museum does not follow any coherent flow. If you’re German, it’s for you.

A great museum, 13 euros for adults (11 for students) and 7 for children. Easily achievable with S3 from the main railway station (a stop Veddel). You need at least 2-2,5 hours to see everything well. Lots of information: texts, paintings, multimedia on the screens, videos etc. I love how this museum combines the past and present: mixes information about emigration/people's stories from 19-20th centuries and from this century, so it's not only historic but telling about the today's situation with migrations. This museum inspires you to travel and makes you think about how many migrations were done in this world since centuries. You can learn a lot here! Exposition is located in 3 different houses (former houses of like "hotel for emmigrates", who were waiting here for their departure to other countries.) One part tells a history of German beer! Also a small souvenir shop and a cafeteria with some unusual beers, café, foods for 5-10 euros.

Nice experience and the lady in the tickets counter was super nice but there are some things can be definitely better: Not to close to the city center so you need to take a ride, don don’t do like we did and walk in one hot day unless you are prepared for the day. Not too much English in the museum which makes the experience less interesting as lots of good things you are unfortunately going to miss or not understand. On of the houses was closes which is super bad if you have your kids with and they like Sesame Street. Very confusing to follow the rooms and to buy the tickets as you buy them from house number 3 for unknown reason. It could be more fulfilling experience withe the status and the sound effects but it looks cheap made Overall it was not a waste to go there i can say

Good overview of Emigration of Europe. English booklet was helpful but numbers written were not always visible. You should spend 2 hours in hall 1 and 2. Hall3 can be skipped or you can visit it in lile 10 mins.

The Museum is really cool, but is a bit strange If you go to a Emigrant Museum and the only language avaliable in the exhibition is German. In case you don't know the German language, the only other option to be able to understand what is in the exhibition there is to follow it in a book provided by the museum, however, they only have a single copy available. In addition, the exhibition often gives the impression that German emigrants are wonderful, that they are very well accepted anywhere and adapt easily, but immigrants arriving in Germany are a problem. This could be interpreted as a hint of xenophobia.

Lovely staff who spoke excellent English and were very good with our large group of international children, but unfortunately there was almost no information written in English. Immigrants have the English language in common. I imagine a lot of immigrants would be visiting the museum, I cannot understand why Germany is so behind the rest of the world in accepting that museums should also adopt English for their visitors.

Very informative experience with aspects of the global context leading to emigration alongside individual stories. Gave me insight into my German ancestors and their challenges in emigrating as well as the issues current immigrants are facing. English translations of all materials are available.

Migration!

I recommend this museum, it's quite big, and they abord the emigration question from different aspects, history, geography, social. I enjoyed my visit. Personal is very kind PS : I don't speak German, so I was given an English book where the majority of the text was translated.

Very basic museum with a collection of outdated information and mistakes in the presentation of many of the quotes and information. A clear focus on historical migration with very little information about the modern-day and more recent migrations or the impact of the internet and remote-work on migration patterns. Despite being in Hamburg, this museum focuses on migration events such as Mexico to USA and simply feeds stereotypes of migration through lazy research and sourcing of complex information. It is a migration museum but the museum does not have translations of the information on the displays and the museum is only fully accessible to a fluent German speaker - this is a real shame and it is disappointing how many years the museum has been like this. A lack of celebration of diversity, diasporas and the long-term positive effects on countries from migration. This can be an interesting location to start off learning about migration but if you are looking for a more contemporary look then you should do your own research.

(Translated by Google) I was there with my family. The museum is really interesting! We thought, since we still had time, let's just take a look at the museum. Well, it wasn't actually our top destination in Hamburg, but that had changed on site. The journey with the S Bahn🚈 was very easy and then it was only 5 minutes on foot 🦶. When we arrived at the museum, we didn't really know what to expect. My fear was that the matter could be a bit dry for my children. The lady at the cash register was really very nice and competent. She gave us a brief overview of the exhibitions and the houses. She also gave my children tips on what to do in the exhibitions. (I don't want to reveal more than that, should be a surprise too) The exhibitions themselves are well explained and very informative. Everything is well prepared and the stories are easy to understand. There is a lot to read, but there are also topics and stories that are presented with films or audio media. Exploring your own family in relation to emigrants is also possible! In the 2nd house there was a special exhibition about emigration / love Very interesting and emotional! In the third house there is also a good restaurant that I can recommend. All in all we spent 4 hours in the museum and loved it. My kids also found the museum interesting and cool. I can definitely recommend the museum! Please allow time. Bitte Zeit einplanen.

Very disappointing: paid 13€ for a primary-school level exhibit. The museum has a very shallow exhibit about migration, focused mostly on the 19th-Century migration of Germans to the US. The exhibit is poorly organized, starting with a focus on the building themselves - former HAPAG passenger terminals - the progressing to a (myopically) optimistic portrait of immigration “across the ages” and finishing with a biographical exhibit of Ballin, the former HAPAG director general. What bothered me is that despite the centrality of migration to Germany and the EU political landscape, the museum chose rather to bet on platitudes such as “migration has been with humanity forever” and the dream of “making it big” in the New World of 19th Cent. migration. There is little depth even on the latter, and history aficionados will probably be left lacking data, documents and profiles from real people. This is the worst museum in Hamburg by a good margin. The city museum will be an awesome alternative once renovations are over. To sum up, don’t bother unless your kids wanna know where the US uncle lives and all that.

Absolute Empfehlung

We had the entire museum for ourselves today. It is quite informative even though lacking a structure and more historical information about the site. I liked the children's feature of the rat. But the information about push and pull factors is way too general. A bit pricey. We used Groupon codes. 33 % discount.

Very nicely restored historical campus, with informative and touching stories about the life stories of the place's founder and his passengers. With a few incidental exceptions, the signage is all in German, making it hard for a foreign visitor to justify the entry fee. The current special exhibition is, however, both heartwrenching and signposted in English.

This museum was nice but could benefit from some explanations in English. The museum is heavily centred around texts, but it lacks English translations. It was also very Eurocentric, the experiences of non-European immigrants were mostly dismissed. Well, that's not surprising, but I find that worth mentioning. Would recommend you to see it, but it could be better.

  • 4/5 Thalia D. 9 months ago on Google
Not clearly sign posted where entrance is located. Many items not captioned in English or another language apart from German. Better captions would have explained history of migration much better. Women, children and men have always been forced to leave their country of origin in order to find a safe place/escape poverty or institutionalised male violence.

Beautiful museum about migration. The core is about german and east European migration through Hamburg. The museum is located in 3 halls that were part of the emigrant way station established by mr Ballin who is also featured in the exposition for his efforts to improve the conditions of emigrants. In hall one the exhibit presents emigration via Hamburg and the achievements of mr Ballin. The second hall treats migration in general with exhibits grouped by stages of a migrants journey. At each stage exhibits show migrants experiences and hopes. It is nice to see a past and present migrant experiences together. In hall 3 there is another exposition that was closed for refurbishment at the time of my visit. Also in hall 3 is the museum shop and cafe. The cake was tasty and the staff is friendly. The museum is mostly barrier free. Exceptions may be the cobblestone pavement between the 3 halls that - while rather smooth - may be difficult for some. In hall 2 there is an entry turnstile where im not sure how you can pass in a wheelchair. Sadly the labels tend to be in german only but the exhibits are still visually very interesting

Everything had been renewed many years ago, I had learned in 2016 the work was done. Now I arrived in Ballinstadt and was very disappointed. In the entrance and everywhere suitcases, suitcases. And didn't have the atmosphere as I've seen it before, so I was already disappointed. I remember the overhang from Germany on the ship to America .. that was done really well at the time and when we arrived in America a green Statue of Liberty .. everything really needs to be modernized.? We drove home disappointed. Fortunately, our grandson really enjoyed ballinstadt. If you don´t read German fluently DON¨T GO No proper cover in other languages which for an Emigration museum seems ironic. To call it an Emigration Museum is overstating what is on display as 90% of museum is dedicated to covering Hamburg to Ellis Island route. Maybe Hamburg-USA emigration museum? Good Museum in some ways but very disappointing in others. Overpriced. I tried to leave my comments at reception/ visitor´s book but was asked to write a Google review.

Danke!
