When we landed in Mardin, our hotel concierge suggested we start at this museum, to get our bearings. She was right. This relatively new museum, run by one of Turkey's biggest conglomerates, Sabanci Holding, was a good starting point to understand the history of Mardin. This is Mesopothamia. -- where civilzation began. There is so many layers of culture and history that really, one must read volumes before arriving here. If not, then the Sabanci musum is the perfect 'summary' to understand what you'll be experiencing in this city over the course of your visit. Do pay the minimal entrance fee ( I think it was less than 2 usd) and take a quick tour. The building itself is gorgeous, and the depth of information shared is very useful. I wish I had taken more photographs, but I was unsure if I was allowed - hence the poor quality of what I have to share. Yet, I will still share for the sake of sharing. Enjoy

For my love for Mardin and its history, I have come to love this museum a lot because it has captured almost all and everything Mardin. A careful and detailed tour of this museum in just some few hours, helps take you throughout Mardin chronologically and in modernity. The christian Mardin, Islamic Mardin, cultural Mardin, industrial and occupational Mardin, etc. Moreover, entrance is free for student group with a teacher. I most seriously recommend this wonderful museum and it is surely one of the must-see of Turkey.

Beautiful building but badly managed museum. I am sure the Sabancı family had good intentions but due to missing indications and the bad manners/arrogance of the too numerous employees the visit is not pleasant. Spend your time at the Mardin Museum which has lovely staff and significantly more important collection. All in all, a museum with potential and clear points to improve.

It is forbidden to perform ablution in the restroom of this museum! I had never heard such a ridiculous prohibition before. Before starting to explore the museum, I went to the restroom to refresh my ablution and then planned to visit the museum. However, it seemed that a security guard was waiting at the entrance, and he informed me that ablution was prohibited inside. You can wash your hands and even your feet, but performing ablution is not allowed. I have never seen or heard of such a thing before. Upon hearing this, I decided to leave without exploring the museum. I cannot comment on the museum itself because of this incident. What a shame, really!

This is a small but also very cheap museum. It is worth visiting if you are interested in learning more about Mardin's culture and way of living. They have several very interesting short videos.

👍👍 Didn’t know what to expect as it was my first hamam. Very friendly staff. Showed me what to do although they spoke virtually no English. 50 liras which I believe is cheap.
