been to several FLW buildings and i’d have to say this was one of my favorite tours. the word that kept coming to mind for me was “intentional” and i know FLW was a control freak, unconventional, and in a lot of ways impractical, but this house felt practical, beautiful, and more than anything - intentional. the tour guide was knowledgeable and the space itself was really beautiful. i wish there was a little more care given to the grounds and signage throughout, but would highly recommend regardless. worth the drive from portland!! so see it.

Beautiful, relocated Frank Lloyd Wright designed home. Wonderful 1 hr long tour with short video. Book tour online as tour groups are of a very limited size to be certain of gaining access to tour! Highly recommend!!!!

If you are a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright this tour is wonderful. The Gordon House is restored well, and you get a full tour and history of the home. It had to be moved 20 miles to it's current location to avoid demolition, and it is so good to see it survive. The tour must be booked in advance, so plan ahead. But it's only $20, so worth the cost.

The Gordon House is the only Frank Lloyd Wright designed building in Oregon. A Mid Century modern gem of the Willamette valley. Originally commissioned by middle-class farmers Ed & Evelyn Gordon, the 3 bed, 3 bath Usonian home was completed in 1964 and was originally located in Wilsonville, OR (it was deconstructed and moved to Silverton in 2000). Usonian is a term Wright used to describe a philosophy of living in harmony with the land, every design element is intentionally made to make you feel one with nature. For many Usonian houses, FLW included a wood cutout window pattern unique to each design in perforated boards known as fretwork. The cedar plywood fretwork, floor to ceiling windows and retro kitchen were some of my favorite details of this charming home. The house is on the Historic register and operates as a museum where you pay $20pp for a 45-minute guideed tour. When I visited, our docent was knowledgeable and very personable.

I did not get to take the tour. The house looks amazing from the outside. Peeking into the windows, the house looks amazing inside. It's amazing to think that these house designs we're considered economical. Today they seem so forward & modern.

Went there with my 9yr old daughter and we both enjoyed it. Lots to see lots of walking but pretty flat. Would love to see how georgeous it looks in the summer. I'd go back again. This could be a very nice place to take professional photos. Lots of places to choose from.

Twenty dollars per person is too high to go in, but the grounds were beautiful.

I’m an admirer of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture. I’m glad that this house was saved as a reminder of the work he did. It’s not a great example of that work. The house is in somewhat disrepair. Roof leaks, that plague many of his buildings have damaged the interior, and remain unrestored. The house is built of concrete cinder block. A cool idea for sustainability built low cost construction, but the architect clearly wanted to hide this with masonry coverage that worked on some walls, and failed in most. The result detracts from the elegance intended, and looks janky. The tour was informative but awkward since the house is so small. I would not recommend a visit.

The grounds are neglected and the house needs a exterior cleaning. Very disappointing. The architect of the house was very cool. Too bad it's not kept up and the tours are not scheduled as posted.

The tour guide, Efrain, was entertaining and knowledgable. The house is of course lovely and worth the price. You're free to take photos and walk around the grounds after. But, if you're a bigger person I would suggest trying to sit on the built-in seating because the chairs they provide are very, very uncomfortable and don't feel stable.

Without question the architecture of this building is incredible. We did not arrive in time to be on a guided tour for the day but we were permitted to walk the grounds. Definitely worth checking out if you are in the area.

According to the website, it's open from 12-4, and guided tours are offered at noon, 1 and 2 , with price of admission. We were a group of 4 adults - one of whom was a retired architect. We had called ahead to make sure they would be open. When we got to the house, a girl named Mairie came to the door of the house, and said, "no, you can't go thru it, only open for school tours . " I said, "No one told us that when I called ahead She just smiled and said, "You can look thru the windows", and she shut the door as we stood there! We walked around it, which took 5 minutes. It was much smaller than we expected. Then 2 more people pulled up in the parking lot, so now we are a group of 6 people. We knocked on door again. Mairie came to the door again, .... And so did another woman who was working there. TWO women were present in the office of this place, and neither one could show us around ? That was 6 admissions that were turned away! I asked the 2nd woman , "When is the next school tour? We could come back tomorrow-- our friend is a retired architect and really wanted to see this . " Her answer was "The next school tour is not until Saturday. " Okay, this was a Thursday afternoon, and the next school tour was not until Saturday? 48 hours from now? and they were completely not doing anything until Saturday?? New levels of Lazy. I asked her , "If the next school tour is not until Saturday, what's going on here for 2 days? " She had no answer. She simply shut the door in our face. Secondly, the house wasn't very big, and was not particularly interesting. There was no landscaping. There were no plaques or any explanation of anything at the house. There were 2 cars in the car port ,belonging to the 2 women who were "working there", but too busy to do anything . There was no notice on the website, that the house would be closed. Our group of 4 and the other group of 2 were all in agreement, that the house should be open for tours. On the other hand, we all agreed that we should let the public know, the house is not anything worth seeing , and the people working there should be fired for not doing their job. They need from Thurs thru Saturday to prepare.... for a school tour..... which is the only thing that their job is about ? Skip this one. A waste of time, and these women were rude.

JUST MAKE SURE TO RESERVE BEFOREHAND!! Stunning house! Well kept. The tour was very informative and prompt. Our tour guide was Kathryn and she was very passionate and knowledgeable about the house. Worth the $20 we paid. We almost didn’t make a reservation and that probably would have ruined the whole experience as you are not allowed to go into the house without a ticket and tickets are limited!!! 10/10 would recommend to family and friends.

  • 5/5 Peg C. 1 year ago on Google
Definitely take the tour! Only FLW home in OR. Get the scoop on the history, design, building and moving! You can actually sit on the couch - 15° - you'll understand the reference when you tour 😉 Our guide, Judith, was knowledgeable, friendly, and generous with attention and time.

It's definitely worth seeing. A more inexpensive version of Frank Lloyd Wright's work. Usonian house. It still fits the land the way all of his houses were meant too.

If you are interested in architecture, history, or both this would be a fun stop for you. Personally, I discovered this unique gem when taking photo's for a wedding. It is an intimate house, full of light, and fascinating design. There is a path to walk around the house should you wish to view it from all angles and very friendly staff will give you a tour (at least that's what I encountered). As a venue I would explain this is for smaller groups and spring/summer events. If you were to book it for the winter your group would have to be quite intimate because it's cold to open all the doors.

This is an amazing little (by today's standard) house. The thought and planning are truly insightfully carried out. Even in it's "new" location, it is great...imagine how it was in it's original locale for which it was designed! Shame on the more recent purchasers for wanting to destroy such a wonderful building. Thanks for saving it!!

They moved this house and adapted the architecture in a way that less reflects the original ideas of the architect therefore making it an ordinary house with some gimmicks. Tour was ok though, but not worth 20$.

Reservations for the tour are strongly advised. The tour is very informative and Frank Lloyd fans will enjoy the details in the tour and house. Plus, you can visit the gardens further up the road.

  • 4/5 Erica S. 4 years ago on Google
Interesting piece of history. Easy to get to. Worth a 10 minute detour, even if you have little interest in architecture. Wish we could have gone inside, but that requires a reserved $20 guided tour.

  • 5/5 Carson S M. 4 years ago on Google
Must see for FLW fans and architecture buffs. Make reservations online for one of the 1 hour tours as there is no guarantee they can fit you in if you just walk up. Only example of FLW’s work in Oregon.
