Stunning. Visited mid-November and was the only tourist. There are spiral stairs that lead to the top of the tower. They are very steep but it’s a wonderful experience to slowly make your way to the top. The museum is small and there are some petroglyphs nearby. I spent about an hour here walking and taking photos as the sun came out.

Embarked on a journey to Burana Tower in Bishkek this December, our visit evoked a mix of fascination and a tinge of unease. Being the sole visitors, the solitary atmosphere added an element of eeriness, especially with a stray dog observing our every move throughout the exploration. Contemplating the isolation, I couldn't help but imagine the girl who once experienced solitude within these tower walls until her passing. Regrettably, the snow-covered steps limited our venture into the tower's interior, creating a slippery obstacle. Despite this, Burana Tower stands as a compelling must-visit destination. Delving into the historical narrative before the visit enhances the experience, offering a profound understanding of the tower's significance. The journey to the tower unfolded along an empty road, heightening the sense of isolation. Along the way, we encountered a few horses, adding an unexpected yet charming touch to the overall adventure. In all, Burana Tower's unique blend of history, solitude, and the wintry ambiance creates an unforgettable experience that beckons exploration.

Oldest minaret in Kyrgyzistan not far from Bishkek. close by there is graveyard with interesting tumbstones. Getting up the tower is quite a task, stairs are almost vertical. But from the top you get great view of the moutains

This striking monument is well worth a visit. The views across the steppe to the mountains are spectacular!! The stairs are very steep and dark so not ideal for those with mobility issues. There is a small museum nearby that tells the story of the site and its restoration.

Burana Tower is an ancient remnant of the city of Balasagun in the middle of nowhere. The Burana Tower is located about 12 km southwest of the city of Tokmok in the valley of the Chu river. The tower was built in the 10th or 11th century. There are also a lot of petroglyphs and balbals (little gravestones) exhibited in the northern part of the area.

(Translated by Google) We do not realize that the Burana Tower has a high historical value, it is one of the oldest structures in Central Asia. After investigating, scientists came to the conclusion that the original height of the minaret was forty meters, the top was crowned with a dome-lantern, which had four doorways - on the cardinal points. Today the height of the tower is 21.7 meters - the rest was destroyed during a strong earthquake in the 15th century.

An amazing ancient site with a phenomenal history. My guide said one plausible story that wasn't on the official history signs was that the King of this place a long time ago build the tower to protect his daughter. The khan wanted to protect his daughter from the affections of local young men, djigits. One day he summoned all the fortune tellers in the region and demanded that they tell the girl’s future. All of them foretold a happy life for the girl - except one. This fortune teller said, “I can only tell the truth, even though you may execute me for it. Your daughter’s fate is a sad one. She will hardly reach her sixteenth birthday, and then she will die a tragic death.” The khan was angry, but he couldn’t ignore the prediction. So he built a tall tower and locked his daughter in the top to protect her. The girl grew up in the tower, looking out over the valley through the four windows - north, east, south, and west. Servants brought her food and drink, delivering it in a basket so that no one would enter her room. On the day of her sixteenth birthday, the khan was so happy that the fortune teller’s prediction had turned out to be wrong that he decided to congratulate the girl with a basket of fruit. He presented her with the basket, gave her a kiss, and then she suddenly collapsed and inexplicably died. Dumbfounded, the khan inspected the gift, and found a poisonous black spider hiding in it. The khan was stricken with grief, and sobbed so loudly that the tower shook and the top part fell away, creating the ruin that we see today.

One of the few remaining historical landmarks, nothing special but worth a visit. Parking space available, toilets are a huge hygiene hazard, I would definitely recommend not to use them.

If you are traveling from Bishkek to most anywhere else in Kyrgyzstan, then you will pass by close enough to Burana Tower to warrant making the stop. The Tower, the petroglyphs in the adjacent yard, and the museum do not require much time to visit (1 hour is sufficient). Depending on the day, there may be a eagle hunting demonstration on site. Be aware that the interior steps up to the top of the tower are very steep!

Definitely worth a stop on your way between Bishkek and Issyk Kyl. Burana Tower - all that is left of the city of Balasagun which dates back to the 9th century… it was then ransacked by the mongols and finally destroyed by an earthquake. There is also a museum and collection of Petroglyphs, Balbals and stone equipment.

i was intrigued by the history of the Kara Khanids, the 1st Muslim Turkic Empire (9th~13the Century AD), that i labelled the 2 historical remains, Balasagun Burana Tower and Uzgen Tower, a must visit. it was autumn September 2023, my wishes came to fruition, when l toured Kyrgyzstan, such an amazingly beautiful country, for 2 weeks. The architecture, was ahead of time. The 2 became the reference for future minarets and towers dotting the Turkic world in Central Asia. standing on top at 25m, what is left of the original 45m, i could visualised the importance of the 2 towers to the caravan traders of the Old Silk Road besides functioning s a point of muezzin's call for prayers. Genghis Khan and its uncivilised army razed the Balasagun Fort to ground in the 13th Century. Otherwise, we 21st Century homosapien would have been able to see lots more of Balasagun as the flourishing capital of the empire, and Uzgen as its 2nd capital on the fringes of Ferghana Valley.

About an hour and a half east of Bishkek, Burana Tower is a decent half day trip if you'll be in the area. Bring som for the admittance ticket. The actual tower itself doesn't take long to ascend and see (~10 min) but if you have difficulty with tall steps and dark, confined spaces, I would not advise going to the top. There is only one way up and down, so there can be a wait. There are petroglyphs that predate the tower nearby which are also fascinating. Be mindful when wearing sandals as thistle is everywhere.

A bit of a drive, but happy to have seen it. The amenities are a bit restricted, but the information panels are good enough. I wouldn't recommend to climb the staircase up to the top if your mobility is limited or if you have vertigo, as very narrow, steep and dark.

Located driving distance outside of Bishkek, Burana Tower is one of Central Asia’s oldest remaining architectural structures. The tower itself is an amazing piece of history. Also at the site is a small museum of artifacts from the region, a yurt with a gift shop, and an outdoor museum with petroglyphs and stone carvings. Highly recommend.

A historical monument which was built by one of the Kings for his daughter's safety. The stairs to the top is extremely difficult to climb since there is derth of space, strategically designed to ensure that enemies cannot easily attack. It is said that one of the priest predicted that the King's daughter will die by the time she turns 18 and thus the king built this building especially for her safety. Unfortunately, she was poisoned and she died 😢

Beautiful tower at the middle of nowhere. It is worth visiting it and knowing the history behind it. 1 hour is enough to see it. You need to pay the entrance fee for the tower and for the museum.

Both the Tower and Balbals are a must see near Bishkek. With limited historical sites around the country, this is easy to access and worth spending a couple of hours at. You can climb the tower and take photos of the Balbal stones, which are very different to what we're used to in Europe.

UNESCO recreation of the original tower - quite picturesque on the plains with the Mountains in the background. The winding staircase to climb the tower is extremely narrow and dark. the stairs are very high and place to keep feet is very small. Required a flash light on the way down. People can only go in 1 direction at a time. Either up or down as there is place only for 1 person on a stair at a time. Would not recommend if you are claustrophobic or acrophobic. View from the top of the plains is spectacular. There is also a small museum displaying artefacts found on the site and pictures of the site prior to reconstruction. Also on the site is a full sized yurt. The on site staff explained in great detail on construction of the yurt and how wool is made into fabric. Very interesting. A short walk away from the tower leads to a site of multiple monoliths - which I understand are placed here from various sites. Next to this are a collection of Petroglyphs.

Burana tower is a medieval minaret from the late 10th century, included to the UNESCO World Heritage. The place is a bit of a drive a from Bishkek but a nice place to visit, surrounded with balbals - the nomadic ancestral monuments / tombstones. I wouldn’t recommend to climb the stairs at the tower if you are claustrophobic because it’s very steep and pretty dark inside.

This is a great historical landmark to visit. There are plenty of informational signs throughout the grounds that explain the history of the tower as well as a museum. I'll admit that the climb up the narrow and VERY dark winding staircase causes a LITTLE bit of claustrophobia, but once you reach the top you are rewarded with scenic 360 degree vistas of the surrounding country side! Definitely recommend visiting here if you are in this part of Kyrgyzstan

Not much to see here but an old broken tower. They have a spiral ladder to go up to a hallway which lead to the entrance of the tower. You have to crawl inside a small corridor to go up the the top. From here you can see a very nice view around(again not much to see) The stoneheads around the area are interesting but not something phenomenal. Also interesting are the stone money they have laying around.

Beautiful landmark which has a museum and you can see the tombs as well. By the way, you don’t have to buy the combo entrance + museum ticket. You can just buy the entrance which is much cheaper than the combo. At first they tried to oversell us the combo but thankfully we were aware that you could buy the entrance only.
