On the northwest side of the theater square, in the corner tower of the partially restored citadel, is the History Museum of the Sughd Region, opened in 2006 and one of the best museums in Tajikistan. Of course come Alexander the Great and Timur Malik, the heroic leader who defended Khujand against the attack of Genghis Khan. Take enough time to visit the museum!

Great museum! We were given an amazing 1.5 hour tour of all the halls. It was very interesting and informative 👍🏻 After all, it’s impossible to get to know a place without knowing its history 🙂 We recommend everyone to start getting to know the city from this place.

Interesting. We couldn't find an English guide, but some local students were keen to assist us with translations. There is an entrance ticket of some 20 or 25 TJS and the souvenir shop is reasonably priced here.

Nice little museum. Compared to other international museums around the world, it's not that great. But if you have made your way all the way to Khujand, then it is of the best things to do in the city.

Been in this museum during our trip to Tajikistan. This is a small museum but complete and very very good. It provides a full overview of history of this country and more in general of Central Asia. Point to mention, and that worth the visit, is level -1 (underground) that is fully dedicated to the life of Alexander the Great though a set of mosaics on the hall's wall. On the floor, another astonishing mosaic shows a big historical map of Central Asia. We had a museum guide leading us through all of the masterpieces with perfect and exhaustive explanation in English. Beautiful.

The Historical and Local History Museum of Archeology and Fortification in Khujand was opened on November 29, 1986 during the celebration of the 2500th anniversary of Khujand and operates as part of the Department of Humanitarian Studies under the administration of Khujand State University. B.G. Gafurov. It is located in the premises of a part of the eastern fortress wall of the Khujand fortress of the 8th - 10th centuries, restored in 1999, which was part of the fortification system of the city. The thick walls of the citadel made of mud brick were fortified with powerful towers. The modern museum building imitates only the appearance of a medieval fortress. The main part of the collection funds consists of archaeological collections and finds obtained during the work on the territory of Khujand by the North-Tajik archaeological complex expedition of the Academy of Sciences of the TSSR in 1954 - 1986. The museum's collection fund includes about 1,200 items, almost half of which are constantly on display. The museum exposition is located in a hall with an area of about 150 square meters and tells about the history and architectural features of the fortifications of Khujand. The exhibition presents the life of the population of the fortress in various eras, starting from the period of its construction in the 6th - 5th centuries BC. before the Arab conquest of Central Asia, when the Khujand fortress was considered one of the most impregnable in the region. Part of the exhibition is dedicated to the medieval history of the fortress. It talks about the culture and occupations of the city's residents, presenting examples of medieval ceramics and utensils, fragments of decorative elements of architectural structures, glassware, and gravestones with inscriptions. Among the masterpieces of the museum collection are a Saka helmet, ceramics from the ancient, Hellenistic and medieval periods. The exhibition presents numerous plans and maps of Khujand from various eras. A small section of the museum’s exhibition is dedicated to the history of the study of Khujand and participants in archaeological excavations on its territory (A.L. Kuhn, V.V. Bartold, M.E. Masson), as well as researchers who contributed to the creation of the museum. The museum hosts regular sightseeing tours for schoolchildren. A visit to the museum is included in the program of city events to celebrate public holidays in Tajikistan. Source: Tourist guide to the monuments of Khujand. year 2012.

😐 Opposite the main entrance of the Panjshanbe Bazaar is the modest and simple brick mausoleum of the 12th century sheikh Muslihiddin. The two pale blue domes are populated by the many pigeons that live around the market square. The place of worship is now rarely open to the general public.

The instigator for the construction was Urukhojaev, the Tajik head of the kolkhoz and one of the most i...
