The
Historical
and
Local
History
Museum
of
Archeology
and
Fortification
in
Khujand
was
opened
on
November
29,
1986
during
the
celebration
of
the
2500th
anniversary
of
Khujand
and
operates
as
part
of
the
Department
of
Humanitarian
Studies
under
the
administration
of
Khujand
State
University.

It
is
located
in
the
premises
of
a
part
of
the
eastern
fortress
wall
of
the
Khujand
fortress
of
the
8th
-
10th
centuries,
restored
in
1999,
which
was
part
of
the
fortification
system
of
the
city.
The
thick
walls
of
the
citadel
made
of
mud
brick
were
fortified
with
powerful
towers.
The
modern
museum
building
imitates
only
the
appearance
of
a
medieval
fortress.
The
main
part
of
the
collection
funds
consists
of
archaeological
collections
and
finds
obtained
during
the
work
on
the
territory
of
Khujand
by
the
North-Tajik
archaeological
complex
expedition
of
the
Academy
of
Sciences
of
the
TSSR
in
1954
-
1986.
The
museum's
collection
fund
includes
about
1,200
items,
almost
half
of
which
are
constantly
on
display.
The
museum
exposition
is
located
in
a
hall
with
an
area
of
about
150
square
meters
and
tells
about
the
history
and
architectural
features
of
the
fortifications
of
Khujand.
The
exhibition
presents
the
life
of
the
population
of
the
fortress
in
various
eras,
starting
from
the
period
of
its
construction
in
the
6th
-
5th
centuries
BC.
before
the
Arab
conquest
of
Central
Asia,
when
the
Khujand
fortress
was
considered
one
of
the
most
impregnable
in
the
region.
Part
of
the
exhibition
is
dedicated
to
the
medieval
history
of
the
fortress.
It
talks
about
the
culture
and
occupations
of
the
city's
residents,
presenting
examples
of
medieval
ceramics
and
utensils,
fragments
of
decorative
elements
of
architectural
structures,
glassware,
and
gravestones
with
inscriptions.
Among
the
masterpieces
of
the
museum
collection
are
a
Saka
helmet,
ceramics
from
the
ancient,
Hellenistic
and
medieval
periods.
The
exhibition
presents
numerous
plans
and
maps
of
Khujand
from
various
eras.
A
small
section
of
the
museum’s
exhibition
is
dedicated
to
the
history
of
the
study
of
Khujand
and
participants
in
archaeological
excavations
on
its
territory
(A.L.
Kuhn,
V.V.
Bartold,
M.E.
Masson),
as
well
as
researchers
who
contributed
to
the
creation
of
the
museum.
The
museum
hosts
regular
sightseeing
tours
for
schoolchildren.
A
visit
to
the
museum
is
included
in
the
program
of
city
events
to
celebrate
public
holidays
in
Tajikistan.
