Brilliant place to visit and enjoy a steam train ride and go back in time for an hour or two. We had a picnic in the sun, a little walk around looking at the old rusty trains waiting for there turn to be back steaming away again. My daughter really enjoyed the day.

Lovely Railway Station built from scratch by the Volunteers of the Tanfield Railway. Excellent tea-room and good facilities including a spacious Car Park. There's also a learning Centre with many historical documents on display. Also on display are various items of Rolling Stock associated with the Railway.

Great little steam railway. Trains run along a scenic route between timeless stations. Along side the railway is walks which show the local history, it also has vantage points to view the trains. The volunteers are very easy to talk to and their knowledge is vast.

Such a special place to visit, we're fortunate to have this in our region. The cafe at East tanfield is lovely. There are loos at most of the stations incl.uding East Tanfield, Andrews house and Marley Hill .There's a very pretty walk from East tanfield to Causey Arch and the trains themselves are fantastic. The volunteers who make it all possible are amazing!

Visited for polar express. Staff lovely and friendly. You get your own cabin on the train which is nice. Refreshments served in the cafe when you arrive at 'North pole' and again the staff are very friendly, especially the young boy (didn't get his name) small queue to visit Santa buy you can wait in cafe and they call you down when queue is small which is helpful. Santa was great with my little boy too.

Another year, another joyous time on the north pole express. After trying out the train to Xmas hell a few years back at another venue (sorry Tanfield, thanks for having us back, we won't do it again) we finally got tickets here again and absolutely had the best time with our kids ages 6 and 1. The elves were particularly funny this year so giving them a shout out at my eldest was very amused by their antics.

A great place for all. The Tanfield Railway offers so much. The oldest railway in the world with deep history which is mind blowing. A place to walk your dog through the deep valley with a stream and otters running through, a steam train trip with your loved ones, a visit to the engine shed, an afternoon tea and much much more. So much to do here but one tip and that is to park at East Tanfield station with its large accessible car park.

Fantastic place to experience the bygone era of steam locomotives. There are a couple of period engines, with beautiful carriages to carry you between the stations. It's slightly cheaper to buy your tickets online the previous day.

We got tickets for the Christmas train to the North Pole. Its a really good experience at the stations. There are no lights in the woods on the train ride itself, so in that respect, It could be better with something to look at during the ride but all in all, its a ride to the North Pole to see Father Christmas and the big man didnt disappoint. Children happy.

Fantastic morning view are great you don't get long on the train but the walks are nice and well worth the £7 to add a picnic box. Would recommend. Plus in these covid times every where was super clean plus staff were constantly cleaning too

Easy 5 star, excellent couple of hours out on the train and the walk. The volunteers very helpful and friendly. The tea room and shop good and with covid measures in place. You book your own part of the train and its very good the price. Well worth a visit, thank you to those keeping it running

Throughly enjoyed our trip on the TanfieldRailway. Slightly different to our previous visits but well thought out and though precautions and pretty good value too...only £30 for a private carriage, refreshments at Andrew's House and a guide book. The kids (yes even the big ones) enjoyed looking for all the hidden Teddy bears along the way

  • 5/5 Lisa V. 3 years ago on Google
It felt safe, comfortable and well organised. My family loved their ride in compartment#9 Remember to book online! You get an entire compartment for you and your group as well as a train programme, spot the bear activity for the kids and refreshments - great value for money. Everything runs like clockwork. The team at Tanfield railway are doing an amazing job. We arrived 15mins before departure, facilities were clean, covid safe and friendly. Adults have to wear face coverings inside buildings and on the platform but once you're in your train compartment you don't need to wear it. The ride was comfy, picturesque and the kids (2 & 6) loved it. There was a steam engine out for our trip (check website for details). The ride takes about an hour and you get to stretch your legs half way, so give it a couple of hours.
