Chicago's
South
Side
is
known
for
tight-knit
neighborhoods
and
historic
architecture,
but
one
of
the
city's
hidden
gems
is
the
expansive
green
space
of
Dan
Ryan
Woods.
Nestled
between
Gary
Avenue
and
79th
Street,
the
park
feels
like
a
world
away
from
the
hustle
of
the
city,
though
the
highrise
buildings
still
peek
over
the
trees
as
a
reminder
of
urban
life
just
outside
the
forest.
Walking
the
trails
that
weave
through
the
woods,
I
am
always
amazed
at
the
solitude
one
can
find
amidst
such
an
urban
jungle.
Towering
oaks
provide
shade
during
the
hottest
days
of
summer,
and
colorful
autumn
foliage
lines
the
paths
in
fall.
Birdwatchers
come
from
all
over
the
region
to
spot
woodland
species
like
Northern
cardinals,
blue
jays
and
woodpeckers
in
their
natural
habitat.
A
quiet
sense
of
peace
descends
as
city
noises
fade
and
nature
takes
over.
The
heart
of
Dan
Ryan
Woods
is
the
east
side,
with
its
creek
valley
and
open
fields
among
the
trees.
Students
from
nearby
Chicago
High
School
for
Agricultural
Sciences
frequent
the
park,
and
kids
play
tag
on
the
rolling
hills
while
parents
picnic
on
blankets.
It's
the
perfect
escape
for
city
dwellers
young
and
old
seeking
a
breath
of
fresh
air.
If
you're
visiting
Chicago's
South
Side,
make
sure
to
carve
out
a
couple
hours
to
unplug
and
unwind
amidst
the
serenity
of
Dan
Ryan
Woods.
The
vibrant
energy
of
the
city
will
still
be
there
when
you
return
refreshed.
