The ambience was good but didn't meet the expectation. 1. The service was very slow.We were three people but they didn't even give one glass.Only two glasses were there. 2.We ordered Masala Dosa but it was not at all crispy.Very thick layer of dosa which should not be the case.Sambar was not at all sambar..No sourness was there.Coconut chutney was horrible.Very thick not the authentic one. 3.Presentation was good but to me it is overhyped as well as overpriced.Though the service was not at all good they charged almost 10% on the overall amount for the service tax.I would not recommend this restaurant..

If you're from India or anywhere from south Asian suburbs..This place is definitely not for your palate & the money. Each & every item of the food ordered was nearly bland and lacked spices or any good taste. I want to mention here that Indian food even if not spicy can be made tasty with mild aromatic spices and the way you flavour and cook the food. But this place just failed to serve good Indian food..Even the price wasn't worth the quantity of the food.. The fritters had strange oily smell to it. Plus if you skip to notice your bill..You'll end up paying OPTIONAL service charge of 10% ..waiter was completely unapologetic when contacted about the dissatisfaction of the ordered food.

This is pure vegetarian/vegan Indian restaurant. Seems like the only one in Edinburgh. ✅This ambiance is good. ❌But the food in below average. We had Mysore masala and Palak paneer dosa, Kadhai paneer and tandoori rotis. They had no salt and tasted okay. ❌The service is slow as well and it took a lot of time for us to get the order. ➖At the end they mentioned they will only accept cash as the card machine is not working and I had to go out, withdraw it for them.

This is literally the first place that I went to for lunch on Day 1 of my Scotland trip (over the Easter Weekend in Apr-22).. after getting off at Edinburgh Waverley Station. And boy, I tell you it was absolutely worth it! I was travelling with my Mum and Sis, who were visiting from India, and I quickly zeroed down on Kalpna based on online reviews - since we were craving Indian Vegetarian food. And what a BRILLIANT decision!! The restaurant was almost closing at 2 pm, but agreed to take my full order in one-go - as the kitchen was closing. Food was DELICIOUS, and the Manager / Caretaker was friendly and had a long chat with us. However, the biggest BUMMER (which is why I’ve deducted 1 Star!) was that they DIDN’T ACCEPT CARDS. I knew they had a card machine, but were reluctant to entertain any requests. So after a heavy meal, I had to walk around in the sun and search for an ATM to settle my Lunch Bill. Absolutely ridiculous in this day and age, and especially in the UK - where everything is tap-and-pay. I come from India and there are always multiple options for payment in all restaurants. Food is LIP SMACKING, but go with CASH ON HAND!

The Thali was not worth the money(£21) and didn't taste great. The Nans on the Thali were very tough in texture.Other food we bought tasted good. The restaurant added service charge of £6.50 and we weren't told or asked.

The food options were good enough but the taste lacked some distinct "twang" to the flavour parameter. Was but disappointed when I had asked for the mixed vegetable that would be added for my thali, the waitress said that it's aubergine but on my plate I had corn mixed carrot vegetable, which was bit disappointing!!

Service was very poor, and they added a 10% service fee. There is a vegan and vegetarian restaurant in Edinburgh, but it is not worth it. Locals say the cuisine is bland and unappetizing, and the staff is incredibly slow. The table was decked with Indian spices, which they should have batter to used to flavour the food.. not worth it at all.. Harabhara kabab was not kabab at all.. And chatni which served with dosha all not freshed like stail food served

Just had a delightful meal at this Indian spot in Edinburgh. The food was genuinely reminiscent of my travels to India — flavorful, aromatic, and perfectly spiced. The staff were attentive without being overbearing, ensuring we had everything we needed. If you're in town and craving some quality Indian fare, this place is a must-try!

Beautiful mosaics on walls everywhere worth seeing alone...food delicious and fresh, waiter made me a dosa masala on request...rice pudding with pistachio was a tasty dessert to finish, very friendly. Last time I was here was 30 years ago and food still amazing 👏

I went for dinner on a Saturday night and the environment was very calm and peaceful! Definitely a plus now that the lockdown has eased and many of us are crowding pubs and restaurants. This place, however wasn't packed and we felt safe also thanks to the measurements they have taken. We liked everything we ordered and appreciated the sustainable and hygienic containers where the food was served. The service was fine, but we didn't like the fact that we wanted to order something first and order something else later in case we weren't full, but the server insisted that it would not be enough and encouraged us to order more. We ended up unpleasantly stuffed (we hate food waste and couldn't take the extra food away as we're here on holiday and don't have a fridge, but they have boxes in case you don't finish your food). Other thing we didn't appreciate is the 12.5% service charge on the bill, which is optional but it feels like it's imposed anyways... We believe anyone should be free to give how much they prefer.

Hmmm. I'm trying to follow a vegan diet, and kudos to Kalpna for having a significant vegan menu. I tried the big vegan platter. It was within my price range because they were offering a half-off deal for August (partially funded by the government). It was pretty good. Warm and yummy. I was certainly full when I finished, but I might have expected the portions to be a little bit larger given that I ordered the large platter. If you read through some of the other reviews, you'll see some repeated comments. The wait for food was long (but the food was warm and good when it came out). They added an "optional" service fee (now 12.5 percent) which sure didn't feel optional. They only accept cash, claiming that their card reader is not working (for 5 months?). That said, the food was good and I had a decent experience.

Second time here and in both, the experience was very average regarding service. Today we arrived at around 13:10 for lunch, there were 3 tables in despite us. We ordered about 13:15 and just got our food to the table at about 14:00. It is a very long time waiting, I understand that it may take a while for the food to be prepared, but during this time, no one passed by to tell us it was going to take a while, whatever the reason. The food was nice and tasty, for sure, but adding a service charge or 12.5% to the bill, for a party of 2, when you barely had "service", doesn't sounds very fair to me.

The dosa here was absolutely terrible, it was dreadful and it smelled rotten and even after complaining that the food was inedible the chef denied it and the restaurant charged us full price. We had to just leave the food and pay. Very poor customer service too. The basement reeks of moldy odor, which suggests that mold is growing in the building and should be investigated. The restrooms are foul smelling and not ventilated. Tip to the restaurant: If you can't cook proper south indian dishes please don't have them in your menu and deceive customers.

Can’t recommend. Food was probably 3 star standard - nice, but what you would expect from any standard Indian restaurant. But the service was awful - we had to ask for a drinks menu, ask to order both food and then drinks, ask after one of our drinks which didn’t arrive three times (we were grumpily told twice that it was on the way, and then after asking a third time told they didn’t actually have any). They told us half way through the meal that the card machine wasn’t working (though from other reviews it seems they have only been accepting cash for at least this year) and then added 12.5% service charge to the bill.

The north indian dishes are good but south indian dishes are an absolute disaster. After complaining how inedible the dosa was, the chef didnt offer an alternative, instead he offered to taste the raw dosa batter, the batter was not naturally fermented and it tasted like a mix of old overly fermented batter mixed with large quantity of unfermented batter. The chef kept insisting everything was good. I had to leave the food to waste and pay full price for the inedible food and leave the restaurant. One of of worst experience in Edinburgh! On top of all this the basement and the restrooms were very un-hygienic with foul odor.

Wonderful restaurant. Delicious food, with welcoming, chivalrous staff, who are sensitive to dietary requirements. I was also particularly impressed that they had a table set up for a single diner by the window. It’s the only restaurant I’ve been to which acknowledges that people dine out on their own and they’d set up such a lovely table for those diners. Lovely place 💜 Always a favourite, whether I’m by myself or with family.

Absolutely APPALLING. The whole experience was awful from start to finish. This was my first visit to Kalpna and will definitely be my last. I had been wanting to come here for years based on its reputation however it appears that they are reliant on this reputation but certainly not living up to it. Filthy tables, waiter not wearing a mask, food took an age to arrive I ordered a Thali which was missing some dishes and additional cutlery, no drinks whilst we were waiting (several hours), no apology for appalling service and quite frankly the disdainful attitude. By the end of our evening we were surrounded by uncleared dirty tables. When we sat down at our dirty table the waiter dabbed my place mat with a dirty cloth!! Do Covid Restrictions not apply to this restaurant??..My food was luke warm, tasteless and unappetising. You quite happily took our money and had the cheek to add 10 % service charge! No apology for the shocker of an evening for not just us but your other customers. Please read your reviews, take on board the feedback and put your customers first.

If you are looking for pure vegan and vegetarian Indian food restaurant, this is it. The only pure vegetarian Indian restaurant we found in Edinburgh, which provides jain food as well. Here they have only vegan and vegetarian options without eggs, fish etc. The food is nice, we went twice for lunch. The only thing is, in lunch they only provide buffet ( no choice of food, whatever is available at their menu but at a very good price) with drinks, though in dinner they provide food of your choice in menu along with multiple drinks. Lunch is budget friendly and worth the money. Ambience is very nice. I really liked of, how they have decorated the tables with Indian spices. It's just good if they provided a la carte menu in lunch as well. But, I recommend the restaurant.

Only buffet food at lunchtime, which was delicious, but no labels explaining what anything was or whether could go back for seconds. I would have liked to be able to split my meal into starters and main, but instead had to pile all on one plate. Then there was a sugn saying only cash at lunchtime, when they clearly had a card machine which was working (I saw someone pay this way). Personally I think it was for fiddling taxes! This place was recommended to us and we were very disappointed.

The restaurant was completely empty when we visited but it was Sunday night at 9pm so understandable. The Thali we had was amazing. I am from Delhi so you can imagine that I went there with a lot of expectations. But every single component in the Thali was super delicious and authentic. I would definitely visit again. It was 100% worth every penny we spent there and we ended up around £100 for 4 people.

Hi. Yesterday I ordered Kalpana Thalia .. Food was not like what I was expecting 😭. Paneer sabji was soo spicy with full or turmeric powder they offered me daal makhani which was also bad in taste 😔 I will not suggest any one to order from here The only thing I like was service staff both were so much hard worker and humble

Small portions, food is so-so and very expensive. Optional table service was included in the final bill without giving the 'option' Sombre atmosphere, toilets were dirty and the walls and stairwell need a clean. I wont recomend this restaurant unfortunately.

The food was fantastic here. It did take a while for the food to arrive and were annoyed by this however the staff handled it really well and apologetic. However as the saying goes best things come to those who wait, and boy was the food worth the wait. One of the best Indian restaurants I've been to

  • 5/5 Oron J. 3 years ago on Google
Kalpana is an institution in Edinburgh, specialising in vegetarian Indian cuisine. In these Cpvid-19 ridden days, the restaurant had to make some adjustments such as putting up screens between tables and reducing the number of waiters to just one. Service was a little slow, but the food, I'm glad to say, was better than ever. A wonderful new menu made the choice difficult but they can hardly be faulted for this... The only real criticism I have, and it's a minor one, is that payment is by cash only

  • 1/5 Natasha B. 3 years ago on Google
The food was cold and tasted frozen! I had to vomit after getting home. The vegetables were stale and mosquitoes were breeding around. The waiters stand next to you all the time and keep staring at your food. It is absolutely disgraceful and annoying. Even though their card machine was working fine, they made me run to an ATM for cash which is a 5 mins run. Highly not recommended from my side!!

  • 1/5 ankitha j. 3 years ago on Google
Worst restaurant that I have ever been to! Worst service and worst waiters... The food was cold and terrible. It is such a waste of time & money! I would never want to visit it again. The staff is illiterate and arrogant. They sell non-Indian food in the name of Indian food. Such a shame!!

  • 1/5 Dominik M. 3 years ago on Google
They do not provide notifications about the possibility of paying by card, you have to go 5 minutes to the ATM. The plates and cutlery are made of plastic, the vegetables taste like frozen and the juice diluted with water

If you're VEGAN and you love Indian food you NEED to try Kalpna! Their curries are so good you'll be amazed at how flavoursome and creamy they are! Highly recommend the creamy Mushroom curry and the spicier Aubergine curry! Naan, starters and poppadoms are also great so recommend get a set for 2 or 3 people (we've done both and there was plenty to go at!!) Nice big portions leave you very full with some left over for tomorrows lunch - we are coming back every week! Thank you very much to Meher and the team - see you soon!

I have been to Kalpna many times, and every single time I ended up thinking that this restaurant survives thanks to its extremely delicious food. Service is just appalling. There were at least 4 member of the staff waiting but it seemed that actually only one of them (young woman) was doing her job. The other three seemed uninterested, wandering at the back of the restaurant and not too concerned about the real customers. Lack of system that left us waiting long for everything (get the menus, order, etc.), even though the restaurant was not full. We asked for bill and it came with a charge for something we had not had. Had to wait again for the correct one and at the time of paying we were told the machine didn't work and that we had to go outside for cash. "Optional service charge" seems not optional as it's added to the final amount automatically. I didn't think the service was up to a tip and given that nobody was coming to the table for the money I had to go to the till. Bill with optional charge was £52, and without it was £48. I gave the waiter £50 and he said "but it's £52" so I had to remind him of the "optional charge". He took money away and could see how he waited for me to go, but as I saw I was waiting for the change he then started to process it. Awful service. I will think twice next time about dining here again.

Sadly the Kalpna has once again lost its sparkle. They should avoid offering South Indian food especially dosai... which is supposed to be a thin crisp pancake but sadly was thick and not crispy. The coconut chutney was creamed coconut out of a tin. My partner had a thali. Very small portions and everything was very bland. This is not the best of what Mother India has to offer...

I booked lunch online and I arrived at 12 o’clock. I was met by a very rude person. He said he is from the kitchen and no waiter was there and we should wait 5 mins for the waiter to arrive. I asked him to help us with food but he refused. He wasn’t welcoming at all. Made me feel unwanted and although I listened to him and waited 10 mins No waiter came and I had to leave without having any food Terrible customer service No manners whatsoever:-((

Manager was rude but the waitresses's service was polite. Food not to my taste, I ordered 2 main courses with naan bread. Plate and cutleries was not changed with the second course Would not go back again. :(

The worst food I recieved in Edinburgh. Delivery over hour late, food cold, tasteless (samosas were fine, naans and roti below average) - we ordered baingan achaari and masala dosa. Both messed up, chutneys didn't even possible to recognize (water with some pieces swimming in). Restaurant didn't answer phone (we tried to contact few times). Didn't touch anything beside samosas. Terrible experience.

  • 1/5 Ranipa P. 3 years ago on Google
I ordered food from Just eat and delivery was late by one hour. No one answering the phone second time. The food was tasteless. Biryani's taste like plain uncooked rice. Not worth for highly rated price. Worst experience ever.

  • 1/5 Sofia F. 3 years ago on Google
Waited hour + for food to arrive! Food was cold, half our order was missing , curry tastes like powder mix ... no veg that was promised or flavor in anything we received... very disappointing;( Lot of money lost on this .....

  • 1/5 Katrina M. 3 years ago on Google
Ordered food, took nearly 2 hours to arrive. We called to ask where it was and they said it was on its way, 40mins later it arrived cold. They did not apologize or take responsibility.

This was some of the best vegan food we've ever had. The Raj Thali was amazing, had a mushroom dish which I could have eaten all night and I don't even like mushrooms. It was really filling. 5* for food. The service was good at first but then they forgot about us and we had to wait for them to appear and flag them down. We had to remind them that we had asked for things. 3* for service which is why the score is low.

  • 4/5 Liam “infinityinc” F. 2 years ago on Google
Food quality was excellent and had a great range of vegan options. Only criticism is that food wasn't as hot as it could been when it came out, but was still all very enjoyable.

Quite disappointing experience The food is not rafinated Some plates were not available Friendly staff but service was a little bit messy Cleaning of the tables was not complete : spraying the table without removing the table sets. Easy to find much better restaurant in the area They need to improve both quality of the food and cleaness

  • 4/5 Carole H. 2 years ago on Google
No frills but isn't the food nice! I was so pleased to find dosas and thalis on the all vegetarian menu. Not a chicken tikka masala in sight, thank goodness! Nice sambar and chaat starter too. Reasonably priced, but cash only so come prepared!

  • 4/5 Chazie A. 4 years ago on Google
Vegetarian/Vegan Indian restaurant. The interior is beautiful and clean. Food tastes authentic and just good. Sad thought they failed by giving me a yoghurt dip on my actual vegan menu... But didn't charge the drink on the bill as for their apologies. They have an optional 10% charge on the bill for personnels costs (but why though? We are in a restaurant and of course you have to serve your clients at the tables...?) , but made us pay it by not giving us the chance to decide if we wanted to give a tip or not. Didn't like this act. Still I would recommend that place.

A must try indian restaurant which serves authentic north indian dishes. The gulab jamuns here are lip smacking. Visited again on a weekday but the food was not that great this time. Staff told me about some shift change among the chefs. Would recommend visitng on weekends.

  • 5/5 Tim S. 2 years ago on Google
We hadn't been in a very long time due to living abroad, so we're slightly worried it wouldn't be as good as we remembered. We shouldn't have worried. If you're looking for vegan or vegetarian food this is the place. Great tasting food with no 'pretend meat' at all. Just really tasty south Indian food. The aubergine and cauliflower dishes we had as part of the Raj Bhog Thaali were outstanding.

The restaurant was busy yet the service was really fast. Great Indian , piping hot food. The people were very very friendly , especially Rakesh uncle, he personally came and asked us about the food. Thank you for making us feeling at home :)

Excellent pure veg food. They serve Jain (No onion and no garlic) food

  • 1/5 Akansha m. 2 years ago on Google
I wish I had -1 to rate them and here are the reasons- 1-Over priced place with no taste. 2-Couldn't see the place managed by the two ladies well. 3-The staff had arrogance and attitude. 4-We were not asked for options in thaali and they gave us the dishes of their choice which was apparently the worst or no one ordered. 5-We had a child with us who was looking for water and we asked 4-5 times but there wasn't any response. We even walked up to the counter to help ourselves, but they did not fret to respond back. Eventually, the water was given to us to drink at the last. 6- This one is an alert- We asked for choley and they denied saying they aren't serving the dish for the day and surprisingly after 15 mins we saw the dish being served on the other table. I am not sure why they made us feel so horrible and different. I would never recommend any one who is specifically looking for Indian food to visit this restaurant. By the way the other day we went to a better place-Rustom which had delicious food and a great staff service.

  • 1/5 Sarah H. 2 years ago on Google
Went there and had the worst indian thali ever. It was too expensive for what it is. The paneer dish was way too sweet. The lentils didn't taste of anything and neither did the chickpea dish. The two vegetable dishes were rubbish too. The dessert and starters were okay but nothing special. The mango lassi was good. The service was terrible too. There was only one waiter and they spent most of the time in the kitchen. Not good. At all

  • 4/5 Madhu D. 1 year ago on Google
The food was delicious and the service was really good. We had ordered a big raj bhog Thali and mini. Not much of a difference in both. The only drawback was cash only.

Probably the best vegetarian / vegan Indian restaurant in Edinburgh and dog friendly ! Delicious food with a wide and interesting range of South Indian dishes. Beautiful recently renovated interior decor with lovely bright open views over St Patrick Square. Very friendly staff and excellent service . Will definitely be going back.

  • 4/5 Pankhuri S. 1 year ago on Google
We went for dinner. Thali was delicious, not too spicy or oily. Although the mango chutney given in the thali tasted more like frooty (mango artificial drink) instead of chutney. We also ordered Gobi Manchurian, which was very oily and tasteless! Would recommend this place for those who want to enjoy Indian vegetarian food!

If you are looking for pure vegetarian Indian food in Edinburgh, Scotland than this is best place and this is only one restaurant in Edinburgh which serve pure vegetarian and Jain food too.

  • 4/5 Desmond D. 1 year ago on Google
Great service.. nice ambience. Good food. Yes there are some technicalities you can think about but over all its a pleasant experience. Flavours are there but some aspects can be improved.. the service is brilliant.. the team are attentive, courteous, and very friendly. The prices are standard for Edinburgh and this place is good for everyone.. location is nice and accessible. Over all a place you can visit for a decent meal with friends, family or just by yourself also..

Wonderful authentic Indian taste, took Thali Raj Bhog and Archana Thali, gobi(had more oil though) and masala Dosa. All items were really very good and after not having Indian food for sometime we really loved eating here. The staff was also very good and checking if we liked the food. Staff even made us try their new dish(soya curry) they would like adding to their menu and it was lovely. Would definitely recommend for those looking for Indian food in Edinburgh. Note- Raj Bhog thali had only 2 curries more than Archana Thali and the price is on a higher side than usual for Indian food and they take CASH only.

Very nice and never thought I would say this for a vegetarian restaurant. Their thalis were just amazing and highly recommended. Also the customer service was very good and made my family welcome.

  • 3/5 Krishan B. 7 months ago on Google
They had inflated prices because of Edinburgh international festival. The Malai kofta Curry was More of regular potato curry rather than Malai kofta. Would not recommend this dish. However their naan are good. Chickpea masala was okay as well.

My family has been coming here for 30+ years! The Buffet lunch is well priced and there are lots of different vegetarian options! Super happy to see the buffet on again after the lockdown.

The place is lovely with very friendly owner and servers. They have a variety of starters. The main course was also wonderful. My personal favourite has to be the dessert which had a tinge of saffron in it, making it even more tasty. A must try for all the foodies.

Literally the best restaurant in Edinburgh. Visited this place on my birthday and the owner specifically made a cake for me and a few special dishes. The taste is amazing and reminds me of home and the service is exceptional. My favourite restaurant in Edinburgh absolutely love it and a must visit!

A typical looking Indian restaurant that delivered more than it promised! One of the very few vegetarian Indian restaurant in Edinburgh that has decent amount of choices. I got the Saag gravy and naan which tasted wonderful and balanced for my south Indian palate. Worth to try once. Poor service as they took too long and cash only clause was not explicitly mentioned or advertised clearly.

Will start this review with the good points. - decor was really nice, mosaic mirrors and comfortable seats. - our server was friendly and polite However, the food was the taste equivalent of a beige wall. Lacking so much flavour all round. We ordered the Thaili for 2, which is 5 different curries with rice, nan bread, and 2 dips. Vegetable pakoras, and a mango chutney and pickle dip. All dishes really disappointing. We ordered two sparkling waters, which arrived room temp, in the bottles. Not wanting to sound like a snob but a glass with ice wouldn't have taken much trouble? Won't be back. Sorry!
