This place is Amazing. They are one of the oldest business in Iowa City. With the service and quality of product they provide it is clear to see why! I use them for all of my holiday shopping. They wrap all of your gifts for you and have an great selection of table wear and local products in addition to their jewelry, which makes this a one stop shop for me. I cannot even begin to explain how amazing it has been to work with Charlie at Hands Jewelers! My husband started working with Charlie during the pandemic to find the perfect engagement ring. Charlie spent 3+ hours working with him to find the perfect ring and was then able to get the ring ready before we left for WA (my home state) where he proposed. He also spent time after closing to patiently wait for my indecisive husband who wanted the perfect ring for me. Again this process occurred, during a pandemic when most jewelers were closed! Come wedding day, due to no fault of Charlie’s, we left Iowa sad before our wedding with no wedding band for me, due to the pandemic and shipping troubles. However, Charlie was not satisfied with us not receiving the wedding band and went above and beyond for us after we departed to our wedding in WA. He gave me a replacement one for the time being but coaxed a plan to have my wedding band shipped to Portland, OR from Iowa City, Iowa overnight where a high school friend then picked it up and drove 45 minutes to our venue to then surprise us on our wedding day with my wedding band that we were not expecting to have in time. Every step of the way, Charlie handled everything with grace and even when things fell through that were not his fault, he went beyond our expectations. We will recommend him and Hands to all our friends and family for any jewelry needs. They treated us like family and we are so grateful to have him as our jeweler for life.

Many years ago I was in a fall that resulted in damage to my engagement ring. I was nervous perhaps someone might take advantage of me in the situation. Hands did not. They helped and got the stone reset and the band fixed. Happy me. They were able to help my husband fix a band (on a watch he bought in store a year ago). They didn't make him pay additional fees. Small details like this make going to a specialty store worth it. I feel confident they treat all patrons the same way. They want your business and remember their customers too. Buying all my watches and trinkets from here going forward.

I had several pieces of jewelry I inherited and didn't know what to do with. After 20+ years I decided that I needed to do something with them! Great group of people to work with, my grandparents passed away within the last couple of years and as expected it turns out their Jewelry while beautiful was costume jewelry with 2 pieces of sterling silver; with one being a portion of a spoon, they did it in a quick and polite fashion. I would strongly recommend coming here for your appraisal work. I worked with Linda and another lady who went through it professionally with care even though it was costume jewelry.

Not even sure where to begin... TLDR: This establishment has been in business for 160+ years now. That alone speaks volumes to their patience and customer service in listening/satisfying to customers needs/wants. I came in here for a gift my mother wanted me to chose out for myself. A gold cross to honor some of the hardship we went through as a family and Hands delivered WAY beyond anything I could have hoped for. 1. The original necklace broke and they replaced it for free. Even laser wielded it and didn't even charge me a dime. 2. The material of the original cross was too thin that any force from exercising or even one strong pull could break it. While on a run it had fallen off without my notice, the necklace breaking or coming loose. I tried retracing my steps with zero luck .I reached out and they offered a replacement due to thin material used on the clasp. I cannot thank or begin to thank the amazing and kind people that work here. Ridiculous/ I would give this 10 stars if I could honestly. Big big shout out to Ann who took care of me. I cannot express how happy I am with Hands! My fiance and I had started looking at engagement rings last spring. We wanted to get an idea of what I would like but still have the final ring be a surprise. We checked out all of the major non-mall stores in the area and Hands is far and away the best! Wow! I had been wearing a class ring of immense sentimental value for 40+ years. One day it simply cracked. It was unwearable and I was inconsolable. I contacted Jostens, the company that had produced the ring almost 50 years ago. To their credit, they offered to replace the ring with a newer version, but I would have to give them my original ring. They were not able to repair it. I knew of Hands Jewelers through my sister, who is another hugely satisfied customer. It didn't matter to Hands that it was an old 10 kt mass produced ring. It did matter to Hands that it was extremely precious to me. Start to finish I had an amazing customer experience and my ring was flawlessly restored. I am over the moon. Wanted to get a miniature roller chain altered for my school project and Dan in charge of the repair/service kindly did this. I had to go/call a lot of places in Iowa city and before I found them and they helped me with less than 3 hours before the project was due too. Went to Hands after an unfortunate home ring-cleaning incident resulted in a lost stone on a family piece. I know relatively little about diamonds or jewelry repair, but the folks at Hands were kind, educational, and transparent with me throughout the entire process. They have even make custom pieces of jewelry from me in collaboration with personal craftspeople across the nation (from hand-pouring melted gold to setting diamonds).

I’m pretty heartbroken over my experience with hands. I brought them a BEAUTIFUL oval ring hoping to have it turned into a custom pendant and they took all the stones out and then ghosted me not once, not twice, but THREE times before I finally asked for the ring back. Now I don’t even have the ring to wear, I have loose stones and a scrap of metal. Like what the heck good is that to me? I’m honestly very upset over the whole situation and poor customer service. Inexcusable.

Needed a place to get my watch fixed (that I didn't buy from them originally) and they were incredibly kind and excited to help me. They took my watch to the back and were able to fix in within 15 minutes, and all of the employees at the front of the store chatted with me the whole time I was there. Hands Jewelers was able to repair my custom made product (not purchased in their store) while my wife shopped, and I was able to see a few friends from college. Hands Jewelers simple went above and beyond to save the day. I bought a ring online for my girlfriend (now fiancée!) having determined the ring size about two or three years ago. When the proposal day happened, the ring was a little bit oversized. The real problem was that my fiancée had to go return to her home country soon so I did not want to ship it to the ring company to resize it since it takes about 3 weeks (!). Kennedy from Hands Jewelers evaluated the ring and told us that they would do their best to get it fixed as soon as possible. Long story short, my fiancée was able to leave Iowa City with her engagement ring and now she is celebrating with her family and friends. (This is an in-depth review of our engagement ring design process). My partner (now fiancé!) and I chose Hands to design our custom engagement ring after shopping around at other jewelers. Ultimately, we chose Hands for several reasons including its history to Iowa. Their stock is unique. As a lover of vintage, handmade, and unique pieces I wasn’t seeing myself reflected in the offerings of other stores or ready made options. We knew we wanted to go local so we could have a relationship with the designer. When I spoke to Linda at Hands for the first time I showed her a photo of an idea I liked as a base design. She immediately began asking me questions about my lifestyle, job, and how I use my hands to determine if the design would work for how I live my life. I was impressed and felt ‘seen’. We wanted to create a piece that would become part of our daily lives, not something for status. She then brought out rings and other pieces of jewelry on the floor with a similar aesthetic. Using these as examples, we refined our vision and gained education on the construction of jewelry. I enjoyed seeing what the materials might look like. On a later appointment, Linda brought out some loose stones so we could understand first hand what sizes, cuts, color, and clarity all mean. This wasn’t so much a sales pitch as it was a leisurely educational experience for us. (And not only in diamonds). It gave us the opportunity to talk about our ethics regarding the diamond trade. Linda showed us an Old European Cut from 1915 that we fell for after seeing and holding it. (My fiancé would later surprise me by securing this stone for our ring). Every step of our design process was met with openness, warmth, and humor. Linda was conscious that I wanted to design every element of my ring and she challenged me while understanding my limits. She made herself accessible by giving me her cell number and inviting me to send her ANY inspiration as I found it. She is no-nonsense and honest about the limits of materials and cost. She did everything in her power to make sure we were 100% happy with our design, even working through additional tweaks, until it was ‘just right’ and altering some materials to accommodate my metals allergy. We were firm on our budget and did not feel ‘pushed’ or ‘oversold’ to go outside of it. The finished piece is even better than I could imagine. We will likely be back for our wedding bands 💕. Its always a pleasure to walk into Hands, and their commitment to service is as good as it gets. I have an old watch that is a family heirloom, but it is very delicate. I was about to give up on it after having it repaired multiple times, but everyone at Hands was so encouraging - and they kept at it - sending it back in for repairs whenever something else would go wrong - and usually without any charge. What a privilege it is to have a store like this. Something increasingly rare in todays world.
