I saw the lion from so close to I had the best of the experiences. The key is that you need to be in the right place in the right time. If you go to the animals right after food was served, they'd be probably sleeping at a corner. So choose your time wisely. Also, they give some questions and stamping games to kids, so it keeps them excited. Good place. Note: you will end up walking a lot so wear shoes and carry water bottle.

Awesome and well looked after with a lot of renovation going on to to make it even better. This is not a zoo it is a sanctuary for animals to have a better life. It has some lions, tigers, racoons, lemurs, goats and many more different animals. The big cats all look happy and you can get surprisingly close and they don't care you are there, they just go on there daily business. Lots of information is dotted about as some animals have injuries from being Miss treated from previous owners. It also has information about each animal and there characteristics. This place is not big but you could spend a long time looking at the animals as they are so close and can even watch some of them being fed. It has a cafe which sells really nice food and a small shop. The play park will be an added bonus. When we went it was half price so fantastic value and a lot of work is going on to make a new small monkey enclosure which looks really good. For everyone who says it's unfair to keep these animals I say they are rescued and now have a chance of a life with great keepers. Just listening to them shows they care. On a side note you have to pay for the car park which was £3 for 10 hours as it's owned by someone else.

I really enjoyed it here. The place isn't massive but you can tell straight away that it is about the animals they do have and not how many people they can pack in. The staff were friendly and informative and the animals seemed very well looked after. I also enjoyed the fact they have left some of the original WW2 fortification in place (now part of the surrounding wall) that you can still look around in places instead of just blocking it off.

Highly recommend breakfast with the tigers. Got to see the lions up close, the monkeys being fed and the tigers walking around. The sausage and egg roll was also very nice. And a bonus of a hot drink or juice. 90 minutes and we got to see every animal and sit and eat our breakfast. Only £7.99 per person. Will be returning.

Really lovely Animal Sanctuary. The lemur walk through was a highlight. Really informative talks and signs giving information about how the animals came to be there. Keep up the good work.

We arrived at lunch time, paid our £3 to park for the day then paid the £59 to get in (2 adults 3 children) It’s “ok” I wouldn’t say it’s worth the money and I left thinking the experience could have been so much better. It seems to be a very tired Zoo in need of money being spent on it. However I must say the walk in dome enclosure was brilliant and that good we went it twice. If you are coming here with friends I’d recommend ticket sharing as you can use your ticket to come back again within a week for £1 each.

Had a nice time here seeing all the animals and they are very well looked after.....Best to plan your day around the feeding times and animal talks though as we had just missed a couple and the animals were asleep after their feed so not so active, the meerkats were funny and it was nice to get close to the Lemur...there are some lovely plants in and around the place too....cafe clean but the ice creams were rather expensive but a nice afternoon out. Family friendly and dogs welcome

We did the big cat experience it was amazing!! Ruth who took us round I couldn't praise enough she was very informative about the big cats. I would definitely recommend. It's amazing what the sanctuary is doing in the background. Yes it is a small animal sanctuary but what do you expect on a little island? It's lovely and unique 😊.

Just like I remember it as a child , 35 years later still a great day , a good place to learn about animals from knowledgeable keepers and staff and you can get involved. The animals have some heartfelt backgrounds and now they are here they get the love , space and rehab they deserve. The food is good and the staff are brilliant.

Amazing experience here today! We had a lovely time seeing all of the animals and knowing they are now happy and safe here rather than where some of them were previously. There is some lovely areas to walk through and sit down at, with lovely views as well.

Excellent place to take the children. We were super lucky to see everything. Reasonably priced and you get free entry to come again. Downside is you have to pay for parking which is an extra cost as the sanctuary do not own the car park. They have a small gift shop which is reasonable and they have a cafe. The cafe is quite small and could do with being bigger. People couldn't find a table for lunch it was that busy. Not a very large selection on the menu either. The sanctutuary is lovely to wlak around quite big with so many animals to see. The talks are great and very interesting. We saw lions, tigers, monkeys, Meercats, wallabies, farm animals, lemurs and much more. They also had a reptile bit. Everything was well sign posted and easy to get to. The playground was amazing my daughter loved it. With slides and swings! It's a great size with lots for children to do. It wasn't busy looking around as we went in half term and the weather wasnt great. On/ off rain. We saw everything and at times felt like we had the park to ourselves.

Brilliant place, I remember coming here when I was a kid and going around the zoo collecting all the stamps. There's a story behind every animal and all the enclosures look great. Friendly staff too. Make sure you visit whenever you are in the Sandown area.

We were staying next door, and kept having dinner to the sound of chuffing lions, so it would have been rude not to visit! We went for breakfast and had a great time... Got chatting with a few of the keepers who were so happy to share some insights, and it felt like a private tour! 10/10 would recommend.

Visited the zoo at Sandown after going to the Dinosaur fossil museum after cycling from Newport , the tiger and lion were not as healthy as those at Edinburgh zoo and the limbs of them were distorted from previous circus trainings and not moving as free and fast. but knowing.that the zoo are putting lots of funding to help with the endangered species such as the black and white monkeys. pigs and rabbits are common but very lovely.

On a short holiday on the Isle and just had to visit; amazingly laid out with animals that you can tell are taken care of with the utmost care and attention. Information boards are on each enclosure for all the animals including names, ages and where they were rescued too! Good activities for children also. Recommend highly

Really nice little big cat zoo. Super friendly staff who are happy to chat. Talks are really good and you feel a lot closer to the animals than larger zoos. Especially like that a lot are rescue animals.

A very nice animal sanctuary . We just stayed in the area for a week and have been before a few years ago . It's always worth a visit it's a nice smaller park, but with plenty of animals to see and the kids enjoyed running around and trying to find all the animal stamps to collect the sticker at the end.

Absolutely amazing. We were on an experience day where we fed the tigers and were also keepers for the day. The staff were brilliant and so friendly. I definitely recommend a visit, the animals are so well loved and cared for and we will definitely be going back to see the tigers we adopted

I love the animal sanctuary and am a regular visitor. They have an incredible group of animals rescued and rehomed from different places, some who had horrible past experiences, but are clearly well cared for now. There are interesting little talks through the day as the animals are fed. It's also great to be able to watch some of the animals online on the webcams on the sanctuary website. Anyone with WWII interest can see one of the PLUTO pumps which supported the DDay landings and has been refurbished and is now hosted in the old battery. Access to the sanctuary comes with reduced parking (free for members) in a great location for the beach

Great place to visit when in Stuttgart. Located in the city centre it's easy to get to but remember to book tickets online to het into parking when coming by car. Beautiful and amazingly maintained garden, a lot of animals in a very good condition, few bars and restaurant. Pretty crowded on weekend. If you want to visit the indoor places you may need to wait in the line due to restrictions for social distancing. Nevertheless worth to go.

Small sanctuary but worth a visit. There is plenty of parking, the staff are very friendly and helpful and there are plenty of experiences to take advantage of (meet the meerkats etc.). The big cats are well worth seeing and there is good visibility across the enclosures so plenty of opportunities for taking pictures. There is a cafe and gift shop on site.

Great place to visit for family day out. Lovely, well looked after animals. We visit the zoo each time we go to Isle of Wight. Kids love it. There are some tables and benches in the picnic area where you can sit and have a little picnic. Lots of different things to explore. We enjoyed new lemurs enclosure where you can walk inside and take a closer look . They are very friendly.

The highlight for us was the walk through lemur enclosure. They have a couple of rescued tigers with 2 more coming next year. They have made a lot of improvements since our last visit and more taking place now. They seem to be aiming for quality rather than quantity. The cafe is totally vegetarian as well.

My daughter and I have been visitors several times. They are always making improvements, enriching the animals lives. Building new enclosures. The animals all appear to be healthy and happy. It's worth going to the keeper talks. The staff are very friendly and happily answer questions about their animals. There are play areas for the children. One next to a monkey enclosure. Funny watching monkeys watching kids. The cafe offers lovely food reasonably priced. You could make this a half day trip or walk lazily, have lunch and relax. Entry price is very good, although the zoo does rely on donations there is no pressure to pay more. Overall, we recommend a visit and hope you enjoy your day as much as we did.

Enjoyed the morning at the sanctuary different from last time we visited. More difficult to take decent photos of the cats than I remember. The 1940s music veteran's reenactment added to the day. The war time food in the restaurant made a change from fish and chips.

Pretty good place ! Nice staff went on a return ticket what I was told was free but was £2 for me and someone else to come back. Nice place but some areas, not many but a few areas are a bit run down, like for example a owl cadge what was sad to see. But overall pretty good.

We went there on Saturday with a family having on young 4 year old. It was a nice and sunny day. All the animals were out and sunbathing. We were lucky to see all the tigers, lions and other smaller animals as well. Don't expect it to be a zoo as you won't find big animals there. They have 3 tigers and 4 lions. We also met a lovely couple who adopted a tiger at the zoo. They have been talking to the lions and tigers there for like 10 years now. It was fun overall.

We had a wonderful visit. The Sanctuary (definitely not a zoo!) is well run by passionate and interesting staff. A good range of talks over the day, and the additional cost meerkat experience was well worth it. A very enjoyable day

The sanctuary has improved alot since I was last there. There are new spacious cages and work on the grounds. It was cold day when I went but was pleasantly surprised to see the animals outside. There is a small cafe on site and considering its size had a varied menu. Will be going for another visit when it's warmer!!

The family at AtlasAdventured highly recommends visiting here! We visited the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary 2 times during our stay here. Such a cool experience, and worth the entrance fee. If you return within one week of purchasing your ticket, you can come back for only 1 pound! We were lucky enough to be here during their Halloween festivities, which they did an amazing job of decorating the grounds and putting on a fun trail for the kids that included arts and crafts! Our 4 year old loved this! Even on non-holidays, they have a fun sheet for your child to fill out as they walk around and bring back for a surprise. You are so up close and personal to the animals here. I have never been that close to a lion before! The white lions are stunning. We love that all of the animals have names and signs with their pictures and facts about them. By the time you leave there you feel as if you know the animals on a personal level! All of the animals seem to be well taken care of, happy, and content. We were able to watch the lions and the tigers being fed and listened to the talks. Super informative, and so awesome watching the big cats search for their food. The sanctuary is well laid out with plenty of paths to take around the space. The gift shop has tons of goodies, the vegan cafe was good, decent price, clean, and there’s a space for kids to play and read. All of the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Next time we come to the Isle of Wight, we will definitely be returning!

Very nice sanctuary! The animals seem to be looked after very well and have good enclosures. £14 per adult for entry (excludes £3 parking). Only took us about 90 minutes to see everything including the lion feeding, but well worth the money.

It's a really great place to spend a day at, especially if you have children. The staff are all very friendly & knowledgeable and willing to answer any questions you might have. I'd definitely recommend making it to the talks and experiences; it's a great chance to find out about, and even meet some of the animals that have been rescued. It is worth noting that the café only serves vegan food which may not be too everyone's taste so may be worth while bringing a picnic. There's plenty of places to eat around the site with views of the animals.

We love the IOW Zoo, we always come over from Portsmouth to visit the zoo. The animals seem well looked after. (the two lionesses looked a bit bored on their rock they tend to always look fed up though, whereas Casper & the tiger next to him always seem to be up on their feet being active). Love how close to the animals you can get. Staff friendly. Clean well looked after zoo. Play area for kids is great. Clean toilets. Refreshment facilities are great too. Definitely worth a visit for sure!

We have always visited the IOW zoo when we holiday in the IOW. Its a lovely little zoo with gorgeous and well treated animals. All the animals looked so relaxed and happy. It is lovely to walk round at your own leisure. Since we were here last there has been new and upgraded enclosures and even the play park for children. The staff were as always very kind and caring. My son loved asking the lady loads of questions about the reptiles and bugs which she took the time to explain.

I loved the wild cats, never seen so many of them, monkeys looked very happy and I'd thought "meet the lemur" experience is a bit expensive but I enjoyed it so much that I'll go again. It's worth every penny. The zoo keeper told me a lot about where they come from, their mature and mentality and I LOVED every minute of it. Highly recommend the 'meet the lemur' experience.

  • 5/5 Shane Y. 3 years ago on Google
A small zoo, tired structure, but the animals clearly well cared for. It is obvious to everyone that the well being of all the animals is the first and only concern of the staff and volunteers there. Please visit this wonderful place and give them your support in their efforts.

  • 5/5 Tracy R. 3 years ago on Google
I cant recommend this highly enough, but firstly, they are hugely into the rescue and conservation issues, so before the 'do-gooders' start, thats where we are on this So, Staff - Keepers, and the lady who did the talks were amazing and they answered as many questions as possible, and were available during the day to take any questions, even offering up some nice pieces if they passed you by near the enclosures. Keepers also had little fun things for the kids to see and try and even taught how to talk 'Tiger language' which actually worked! The animals were out of this world! Lions, Tigers - all playing and having fun, feeding and all very alert and interactive with the keepers. The facilities were lovely, clean and all the signs were in place and well maintained giving all the information you needed to feel safe All in All, totally amazing day ( yes, however small this place is, we spent hours here) and I will certainly be going back, as will all of the group I was with on this visit, we all loved it, big kids and little ones!

  • 5/5 Richard J. 3 years ago on Google
This is a small zoo but they have big aspersions! Definitely aiming to become a sanctuary, they have rescued a number of their big cats from circuses. You can see they are well cared for, and the animals must love the space and freedom after being in very confined cages. The monkeys and lemurs were so vocal, and lively. You can get very close to the animals here, my wife got amazing pics! The entry is high for the size of the zoo but you know every penny means a lot to help them continue their amazing work.

  • 5/5 sue w. 3 years ago on Google
Absolutely fabulous. Every time we visit the zoo it has been greatly improved. The animals are so chilled out especially the lions and tigers which the zoo rescued from horrible conditions in a Spanish Circus. So much better than Amazon World. Food in the cafe is great. Would highly recommend. Good social distancing practises.

We came here during half term. Lovely little zoo. It does need investment as some areas look very tired. That said the animals especially the lion and tigers were of huge interest to my little one. We had some wonderful photo opportunities when watching the tigers play with a ball. My child had homework from school to look at endangered animals and this zoo was perfect. We even managed to get a book about endangered species. The only let down for us was the cafe. It could have been a bit cleaner. Space could have been utilised better. And we had a good 40 minutes wait for 2 bowls of cheesy chips! Apparently there was one chef. The menu consisted of baguettes, soup, jacket potato and chips. Not exactly time consuming food to prep but we sat and watched many families like us huffing and chewing at our nails as we were hungry, kids getting bored and whinging at their parent for food . When the chips did arrive they were overdone and the lack of cheese on our cheesy chips did not taste like cheese and was grim. After this we did go back to view more animals and made a little garden which was lovely. We then went in for the reptiles speech. It was a shame that the snakes were not feeling hungry as we were all interested to see how they ate there food. We saw an owl and a stick insect. I was expecting a little bit more hands on and to see more reptiles for the talk so a tad dissappointed that it ended so quick. Otherwise a great day out and homework achieved

Very nice zoo, perfect for a day with the kids. It's quite expensive, so come early to get as much as possible out if your day there. The big star (according to my friends kid) is Frederick the (really) big crocodile so make sure not to miss him.

Loved every bit of Wihelma Zoo, well its not only a zoo. There are plenty of things to do for example you can relax in Lush green park, have a visit to botanical garden etc. From Ants to Elephant you will experience almost everything here. Despite the Corona crises the organizers managed everything pretty well. Make sure to have atleast 3-4 hours to enjoy every bit of it. We had a great time at the zoo and would definitely recommend it. Cheers

Nice place to visit for kids. Would take around 4-5 hours to complete. Please check the slots available on the previous day before you visit. There are no student offers. Kids less than 10 only has offer. You can buy food inside. It is little costly. You can also pack your food and take.

The best zoo and botanic garden I had ever visited. I was spending the whole day and still couldn't visit everything. We were impressed about the animals because all were new in age. Cages were extremely safe and clean. Every thing was detailed. Plants were rare and beautiful. It was a perfect place to visit especially for courious people. Had a chance to see seals feed process and a mini show of them. Ever corner had a place to seat taking in consideration that the park is huge. Be prepared to spend a whole day. Take water and food to eat😉 Have fun fellows.

It's an amazing place, they really care about the animals here. We seen one of the ex circus lions playing with his toy, he was super cute 🤩🦁 It's nice to see that they have a better life now. We managed to see the lions and the tigers as well, spent about 1.5 hours here. Will definitely return whenever we are back on the island.

  • 5/5 Angela S. 2 years ago on Google
We really loved this place, you actually got to see all the Animals really well. The big Lion was the best, it was really close. It made us jump, because it started to roar at my Son and ran towards us, making us run. But obviously it was behind bars. Very well cared for animals.

Fantastic sanctuary great to get up close to the big cats and other animals. The onsite cafe is fairly priced. And the car park is £ 3 For visitors so don't over pay

  • 3/5 Sam E. 2 years ago on Google
Small place. Not much to see but awesome that the animals are rescued and their stories are posted up on their enclosures. Was expecting to see a male lion but the females we beautiful. A new rock is being built for them so they were in a small cage which didn't seem comfortable but they were gorgeous nonetheless.

Had the big cat experience. Emma showed us around starting with the Lynx then to the Lions and finally to the Tigers. She explained about the cats and where they were from or rescued from. Being allowed to feed them was amazing. Highly recommend this experience.

It was wonderful to see the great work being achieved here at the Wildheart Sanctuary. They really need people to visit to continue their efforts. Hearing about the breeding programmes and heart wrenching stories about rescued animals made our visit all the more special. We were able to listen to all talks, which was a first for us, as because of the zoo's size, we were able to race back from anywhere. We really enjoyed our visit. My teenagers would love to volunteer but I fear the trip from London might be unworkable.

  • 5/5 Richard U. 2 years ago on Google
Small zoo, doesn't take long to walk around. But the talks and hands on experience with the reptiles makes it well worth spending half a day there. Having to pay for the carpark as well as entry was an unpleasant surprise though.

  • 5/5 Craig P. 2 years ago on Google
Absolutely loved this little zoo! It may be small compared to places like Marwell but it’s got some beautiful animals and each one has a story of being rescued from hardship to be looked after with care here. Lions and Tigers and Meerkats, oh my! 😆

  • 4/5 Danielle F. 2 years ago on Google
The only down side to this place is not enough toilets. It really isnt sufficient when there are things like school trips taking place or the summer tourist season. We ended up using the public ones by the carpark. Space is at premium. There is a large kids play area. The new primate facilities look like they will be amazing and they appear to be moving this into a modern day refuge with animal welfare its priority. Alot of these animals are rescues from worse environments. The £1 pp to return within 7 days was also a fantastic idea and worth doing if particularly busy or you arrive later in the day. The gift shop is well stocked.

A very good place to visit especially for those who love nature and birds and animals. Garden is not so big but nice. Different type of bird/ animals are housed here. The names of animals and birds are not displayed outside their cages due to which it becomes difficult to know their names especially of those which one sees first time.

  • 5/5 Jesy S. 9 months ago on Google
Lovely place to visit, the keepers really know there stuff and all animals are well looked after. You can walk through the lemurs enclosure, there was one male employee (don’t remember his name) who really knew his stuff when we were talking about the lemurs - would highly recommend and with the ticket you can go back again within 7 days.

  • 5/5 Laura C. 9 months ago on Google
A great day out for kids, adults and teenagers too! Interesting selection of animals and feeding time for the tigers and lions was exciting. Pretty gardens to walk through. Not interested in the war stuff, skipped that junk. Monkeys were cute.

  • 5/5 Dylan B. 10 months ago on Google
What a wonderful day, the staff are a credit to these animals, they look after them really well and educate visitors during there visit. Was priviledged to see the tigers being fed, and a disgruntled lion roaring becuase he wasnt being fed, lol, what a treat. You get to visit for a £1 again if within 7 days. Plenty paid for parking on site, and good facilities on site. Would go again in the future if i get the chance, thank you for a wonderful visit.

Great day out at the sanctuary which is inside an old ww2 fort. Big carpark & very friendly staff. Cafe have lovely food at reasonable prices. Small gift shop with plenty of items. The place is massive with so many adorable animals. Monkeys are so funny while the big cats was just chilling in the hot sun.(big ice cubes they had) Family fun day out with so much to look at. Everything well maintained & clean. Worth a visit!

A great day out especially if you have little ones. Unlike other zoos, you can actually get quite close to the animals and there is plenty to see whilst you are there. Parking is £3 for visitors and lasts 10 hours. It is a ticketless car park so uses ANPR

I was gifted a "keeper for the day" for valentines day and what an experience! It was an amazing day 🙂 the keepers I was paired with were so knowledgeable and were happy to answer all the questions I had. I found out so much information I never even knew. The sanctuary have rescued numous animals and given them a lovely home. The trust the animals have built with their keepers is evident to see and so amazing. The day was long but worth it with 1 hour lunch break with food included. I even had meerkats climb over me and was able to hold a monkey 🙂 without touching/stroking of course. This is an amazing gift to give/ receive and any animal lover will love.

Had a day trip to the Isle of Wight and visited the wildlife sanctuary. It did look a bit run down from the outside but don’t judge a book by its cover! total change once inside. Plenty to see from lions, tigers, monkeys….etc and the enclosures are well maintained. The animals have plenty of room to wander around and trust me you feel very close to them rather than viewing from a far. Duration between 2-3 hours Friendly staff and food was good value for money. I recommend it no matter what age you are. It was very enjoyable and hope to visit again.

Nice place - smaller than you’d first imagine. Marked down as cafe is vegan - not necessarily a bad thing, but warning would help as kids wouldn’t eat the ‘cheese’ on their chips or pizza.

Great small zoo with a great ethos based around saving animals from circuses and other situations they shouldn't be in. The animals can never be released back into the wild, so this zoo takes care of them. It's slso a charity...so well worth a visit to support them. And the cafe is also great...with lots a scrumptious gluten free homemade cakes. Recommended...

  • 5/5 Caz F. 7 months ago on Google
Love it here! So glad it's now classed as a sanctuary instead of a zoo. The animals are so well looked after and the staff are lovely, always willing to have a chat about the animals. Always like to visit when I come on holiday to the Wight.
