We got our tickets online and when we got there we were informed about a lot of the exhibits being closed. We stayed positive and I reminded my son, that even though he won’t see the animals he wanted, we can still chose to have a good time. And we did. What I loved. I LOVED that there weren’t a lot of people there. We were able to enjoy our walk through the zoo without being around anyone. It was so peaceful We got to see a zoo keeper feed the otters. What we didn’t love The animals looked so SAD! The elephant was all alone standing staring at the wall with his trunk in his mouth. The tiger was pacing back and forth in front of the window. On our second walk through he was still there, pacing. My son himself pointed out to me that the animals look really sad. Asked why they all are feeling so sad. We still had an educational time, we stayed positive and had a good time. The lack of stars was because the animals looked so sad and I don’t think I’d want to go look at caged lonely animals again. Already had a talk with my son about why we won’t be coming back.

What a wonderful zoo. Get there early and avoid the crowds. We have been coming for years and the additions, like the new aquarium, are fantastic. My kids have grown up visiting this zoo and it’s still one of our favorite family activities. It seems like the staff really do care for the well being and protection of the animals. Consider a membership if your local. It pays for itself very quickly!

The company I work for hosted an event here, and I gotta say, it was awesome. I brought my camera and had a blast! We had an up close encounter with a sloth and a falcon, lunch, and access to the zoo. The aquarium is actually pretty good, and my favorite part. I've been to a few, and this one was able to wow me with the jellyfish room. Amazing. Parking is crazy, just a heads up. I heard of a lower lot after the fact. Research it.

This is a beautiful little zoo and aquarium. It sits in a very large park beside the sound. There is free parking. They are both very popular and for good reasons. The zoo and aquarium had a few attractions that were closed the day we were there. They were working on adding a new attractions and fixing some. There was still a lot to enjoy. I won't go into specifics for there is to much for me to tell. But if you enjoy beautiful animals and being able to interact with them and their staff friends, this is a great place to plan a trip to. They do offer zoo memberships that can save you money throughout the year and enjoy other benefits. Look into there website.

We went on Saturday, December 11 at 11 until about 3. Unfortunately I happened to pick a day where there was a wind and rain storm, so there was a good amount of animals that weren’t visible or wanted to mainly stay in their warm den. But that’s no fault of the zoo! That’s just how it is sometimes. We got angus burgers and waffle fries from the food place, it was delicious. At 12, we made our way to the Wild Wonders Outdoor theater for the Animal Close Encounter, which I highly recommend! We got to see pouched rats run across a bridge, a really cool African bird take flight, a beaver swim in a pool, and an Eagle Owl fly over the audience. We were only able to view one aquarium as the other one is under construction but the aquarium we did see was AMAZING! At the end they even had an area where you can touch tide pool animals like sea urchins. The kids zone was nice and big and had a bunch of cool animals surrounding it. My kids also enjoyed riding the carousel. Even with the bad weather we still had a great experience. We definitely want to try and go back so we can see animals that we weren’t able to. Edit: we went back late January in 2022 and were able to see the polar bear and three tigers!

Overall it was a lovely experience, though the crowds were a bit much, it was to expected over spring break. The gift shop had decent prices, and the staff was very nice and informative. It is clear all the animals are very well cared for. The only downside is that one of the aquariums is closed for renovation. I would have loved to see it, but what we did see was wonderful.

So much fun! Great zoo, my children absolutely loved it. The animals were right up close, aquarium was a little crowded. But I would gladly go back. The workers were very friendly and accommodating. Overall, I'd recommend this park to anyone. The tigers and polar bears were our favorites. Very clean, lots of shade. I'm not sure if you can bring a picnic but it would be a great idea. ❤️

This is a great zoo. The enclosures are nice and well maintained and the animals all appear very well cared for. The landscaping throughout the zoo is nice as well. I have visited here a couple of times over the last few years and always have a nice time when I visit. My most recent visit was this past March.

When I was in Washington, I was skeptical to which zoo I should visit or prefer and everyone recommended Seattle Woodland Zoo over Point Defiance Tacoma Zoo but I choose to visit both in the end and let me tell you that Tacoma Zoo is one of the best designed zoos I have been to. Open, airy, spacious, well organized and routed. The best part of this zoo is that it was cart/ pram/ stroller friendly. I visited first Tacoma then Seattle and later Oregon Zoo. And I very much liked Tacoma and Oregon over Seattle Zoo. This zoo upon entrance has a play area with a small water area to play on. There is also a bird feeding area wherein they charge $2 for the food stick. There is a cafeteria right next to it. I loved how beautifully the elephant was taken care of. I also happened to see Meerkat, Tapir, Skink and Rhinoceros Iguana here for the first time and it was an amazing experience. Aquarium here is huge and lovely. This is a 1 stop place to your Zoo and Aquarium needs. This zoo doesn't have giraffe in case you are interested but Seattle Zoo has. Ample of parking space but parking is still hard to find and is a bit of a walk to the zoo. There are 3 things that I didn't like one of which being the show that they were running, it wasn't entertaining at all plus the display glass of the aquariums and some of the animals were a bit dirty and reflective. Also, at our time of visit, Polar Bears were not available and there was no notice at all, which was disappointing. Zoo shop was good so all in all a great visit and I highly recommend 👍🏻

I love this spot! It was also one of my mother's favorite spots. I took her once or twice every summer before she passed. She had a special love for the sea otters and loved the area set aside for the children, especially the meerkats and the petting section. The zoo will always hold a special place in my heart! The animal handlers are always helpful in answering questions and it's clear that they truly care about the animals. There's a nice gift shop near the entrance as well.

We attended Zoo lights tonight and it was a lot of fun. We had never been to this zoo before but it was a great event to take the kids too because the zoo is small. It did take us 90 minutes to walk around and see everything though so it was definitely worth the money. They did a phenomenal job on the light displays and this was better that other similar attractions that I've paid more money for. Parking however is a complete nightmare. They over sell this event and you almost have to stalk people in the parking lot to get a spot. The churro bites are fantastic and so are the mini doughnuts (sold at different snack bars)

Zoolights is a nice option for family and friends to grab a hot drink, have a cod dinner, and eat dipping dots. The holiday decorations are great talking points as you walk the campus. There are some steep hills on campus and quite a bit of stairs to the zoo entry (there are wheelchair like ramps that you can use to avoid the stairs). Hence, bring your good walking shoes. Bathrooms are not clean...beware. There is an opportunity to grab souvenirs and ride the carousel. Bring your cameras to capture a holiday family portrait as there are several photo props set up along the campus for photo ops. Come on a cool night dressed warm with gloves, hat, and scarf.

Just went there yesterday. Really disappointing. Lots of empty space with NO animals. The elephant looked like it was in JAIL with just a branch on the floor it was picking at. I'm SO glad I didn't bring my child. $40 to look at nothing or just sad sad animals caged up alone. I used to love the ZOO. I'll never be going back to THIS one for sure. Not ONE person who worked there asked if we enjoyed it or anything. All around waist of money and time.

We had the best time checking out the animals. My son even made a new friend. The people were very friendly. We did not have to wait in a long line. It is not far to walk 2 to 3 minutes from the parking. Parking is free. Sanitation stations was nice to see. The play area to let the kids run around while the parents can relax a little. Great food to eat there.

It was a good little zoo. Not overly big. Walkable In about 3 hours. The keeper talks are interesting. Some exhibits are closed for renovation. Animals are mostly limited to marine wild life and some asian. This is not the San Diego Zoo, it’s also not trying to be and as such is a great addition to point defiance park!

I live in Portland suburbs. 20 minutes from the oregon zoo. My family and i drive 3+ hours one way to go to point defiance zoo. The aquariums are amazing. The animals are happy. Its well worth the drive and cost of fuel, food and admission.

Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium had a good amount of animals and exhibits. We spent about 3 hours here and our favorite attractions were the polar bears (arctic) and puffins (rocky shore). Would recommend PACKING FOOD! Your bags are not checked for outside food and drinks and the options inside the zoo are terrible. We came on a Friday afternoon and had no problem with the amount of people or waiting to see exhibits. Buying tickets online will get you a $3 discount. The zoo was a great experience and definitely worth the money!

The zoo was moderately sized but there was barely any animals. Their aquarium section was pretty cool though. They also had a pretty interactive and entertaining show. I could tell they worked very hard to put everything together, train the animals, and make the props for their wizard ? Themed show. We ate at the cafe there and it was an typical zoo cafe. Unimpressive yet acceptable. There definitely was not enough seating and the eating area (floor and tables) was incredibly filthy. The worst part was the every dippin' dots cart was empty

Zoolights is one of the best in the area and I definitely recommend it. I would say this and Woodland Park have the two best light displays that everyone should check out! When it's raining or there are puddles, use the puddles to get some nice reflection pics :)

I understand caution is needed. But in an open zoo, I feel the requirement of face masks was overkill and definitely soured the experience. In the buildings sure, I understand. But walking around outside it was not necessary with people generally keeping distant

As I was walking through the zoo I was expecting to see so much new wildlife but instead all I saw were empty cages. The masks made it hard to breathe and it was very hot. Don’t waist your money here because you won’t see anything. And don’t even get me started on the very lonely sad elephant, I wanted to cry because he looked so sad. The animals looked dehydrated and very lonely. I’m definitely never coming back here again.

Went to the zoo lights at Pt. Defiance. I was pleasantly surprised! They had one way arrows, tons of lights & Christmas music playing as you walked the paths. Not many restrooms, but they were located well. I would suggest that you go during the week & early if possible. But it wasn’t crowded at all & everyone wore masks.

How lucky are we to have a local zoo so close to us. We got there nice and early and plenty of parking. Some of the animals were shy and hiding but lots of them made an appearance. Brought our own lunch in with us, main grill/restaurant was open but other than ice cream the side vendors were closed. Lots of bathrooms all around the zoo, and easy ADA walking paths and elevators where needed. Had a great day exploring with my son, a fun summer activity to get out and about to do together.

We attended Zoo lights for the first time ever. Our party included my husband, myself, our daughter and her husband and their two little girls, age 3 and 16 months. The 16-month-old was in a stroller. It was raining lightly, so we got a little wet but not drenched. We very much enjoyed the walk and the lights. It wasn't terribly crowded; we went at 4:30 on a Tuesday evening. The 3-year-old's favorite stop was the little goat barn and feeding and petting the goats. Everyone we saw was masked as required, and there were a few places where you could get hand sanitizer, the goat barn being one of them. My photos turned out surprisingly well for it being dark. All those holiday lights brightened up the place. Most of the animals were not out for viewing but we did see penguins in their pool, and a few small animals in their glass in habitats. In one building we were lucky to see a tiger in his giant glass in home and he was sleeping so soundly was like giant house cat.

Love that the zoo is with an aquarium. Although it seems that it was more quiet now that before all the changes, the fun and experience was still there for kids. It was great to be back. Staff were helpful. Love the take your photo section, but the photos didn’t make it to our emails.

This zoo has something for everyone in my family, exotic animals, endemic animals, play areas, aquariums, food, shows, animal encounters, a carousel... We always get a yearly membership. It makes sense for us as we have kiddos that have varying attention spans and while we would like to stay all day and make good on the drive time for us, it doesn't usually happen. I don't feel so badly about leaving after a few hours knowing we can just come back.

The aquarium here was really good! We only went into one. The other was closed. The hammer head sharks were super cool. My favorite was the jellyfish! They have a little show they play at noon, and it was actually pretty cute. Some of the animals didn't do their part correctly, but I think that made it so much better. Do see the animals act as animals. It was cute. My kids really enjoyed the day there today.

Went there to get pic's of the Zoo Lights. Zoo's Website said they are open till 10 pm. Got there @ 9:30 pm. Weren't letting people in. Only OUT!! Still got a few shots. There were many people leaving. DARN *<> I came a second time at around 6:00 P.M. to get more & better photos of the Zoo LIGHTS, but alas, they want $22.00 to get past the gate?!+<>I can't afford those prices this time of the month. Oh well, I tried!

The scheduled visiting make it easier to insure little to no lines to get in. Things are clean and friendly helpful employees helping guide and answer questions. Social distance is easy to maintain if you don't rush it. Above all this, the animals are beautiful and appear to be well cared for. Go and enjoy.

This is one of our favorite zoos. It was a easy layout with all the animals you could want. I also like that it has two aquariums. We did go during the pandemic and they handle everything safely. I didn't not feel over crowded. Everyone work masks and the pathways were clearly marked with directions for walking.

We went on a beautiful sunny day and we enjoyed how beautiful this zoo is with all the flowers and trees. The zoo is very pretty but the exhibits are lacking and need some updating. Also there aren't very many animals to see here. My girls ages 10 and 12 loved the Aquarium. The jelly fish were displayed beautifully and they loved the glass ceiling and seeing the sealife swim by. I would go here again.

Waste of money. Barley any animals to visit with. Most exhibits closed. The animals look incredibly sad and lonely. We’ve visited 3 times this past year and nothings changed. Tons of false advertising with what animals they show online but don’t have at the zoo. Today’s visit was mine and my family’s last, don’t waste your time and money. I’d recommend Seattle zoo, instead.

Love this place! Great for the little ones. Super kid friendly and there's a playground that's spaced out and a little bit for all of them. There's a food court but it's not the greatest. Suggest bringing in your food or eat prior or after the zoo. Otherwise, everyone was super friendly, patient and welcoming!

A gem in Tacoma.... Exceeded my expectations, esp. the aquarium. Grounds are very nice. Sumatra Tigers are a must see. The polar bear was MIA, must have been snoozing. Grandkids loved it. We shall return when it's warmer. Be prepared to take pictures!

We love Point Defiance! The surrounding area is full of beautiful trails and beaches. The zoo itself is great. The staff is always helpful and informative, answering questions and indulging toddler chatter. We use it as part of our homeschooling to discuss habitats, animals adaptation and diets, etc. They have lots of animal chats at various times to learn about the animals and I enjoy looking at the plants and seeing where they are from. It has plenty space to bring a picnic and a cute playground also. Lots to do and lots to see!

This zoo and aquarium is amazing that is actually is more fun than the zoo in Seattle. The aquarium isn’t very big but we love that it gives us more options to see under water animals and creature. There’s a kids zoom which is like a small playground near the zoo entrance. This is the most high traffic area in the zoo and some facilities here need maintenance as the paint seems to be fainted. Overall, this is a must go place if you visit Tacoma with kids. The parking lot is large and has plenty of parking space. It’s in the Point Defiance park so you could also visit the other part of the park with kids and maybe spend the entire day in this park.

The journey was unique and memorable. We bought tickets online to save some dollars ($20/each before tax). We visited early on a Sunday morning, so there was no wait, and it helped us to visit each animal at our pace. I love how the zoo management devoted a section for children called the kid’s zone, where children can learn about animals and their habitats. The sad news is that there is no more polar bear or arctic fox, and the south aquarium is closed until 2023. I would love to come back someday to see the new things in this zoo next year.

Great zoo and aquarium especially with younger kids - it's not huge territory but also the amount of animals or sea creatures is not a huge variety. Great kids zone area with playground and petting goats area. Prettiest carousel ever! And free parking is a huge plus. Also zoo located in point Ruston and around is a ton of easy outdoors hiking trail options, viewpoints and Owen beach. Easy can spend all day in the area.

More of a park with animals than a zoo but it was still cute and we were happy to support a small zoo. Views were awesome of the water and Mt Rainier. In the Asia area they rotate the animals through the different enclosures so they could be in a different area everyday which is really neat, never seen that before. Nice for a quick visit and pretty affordable.

We got the membership. It’s a very nice park. Can’t wait to keep exploring it. I have a one year old and the zoo has a very nice playground for toddlers. The food at the zoo, at least the pizza, was odd. But the place is very nice can’t wait to go back. We missed a bunch of the exhibits.

Always super fun, this is our second visit to this zoo. There is a lot of interaction, a lot of learning, so much fun to see the animals, to interact with some of the animals and see the zoo keepers interact with the animals. We got to see the the otters get their teeth brushed, that was super cute, we saw them giving the elephant a check up. Just a great experience all around.

We had high hopes for our experience but for the price, we definitely expected more. We went on 8/10/23. An entire aquarium is closed, we didn’t get to see the polar bears, meerkats, the arctic fox, or the clouded leopards. It was fun to see the tiger eat but so many animals weren’t available and I feel like that was misleading especially given what we paid. I wish I had known the aquarium was closed before we went so I’m leaving this review so others can be informed. We did see the hammerheads though so that was fun and we appreciated the zookeepers and their willingness to share information.

The polar bears! Worth going just to see them play together. The twin sister polar bears are very cute and playful. We saw them playing in the water together and it was quite adorable. The zoo is fairly small and you can complete it in 3 hours. They seem to rotate some of the animals as well so you might not see all the animals that they have. The aquarium was a big hit for my 2 year old nephew. It also has a touch tank which is great for kids. There is another aquarium under construction that will open sometime in 2024. The tiger was beautiful and we were able to see her up close. There is only one Asian elephant at the zoo which made me feel sad for her since she seemed a bit bored and so I wish they had a companion for her. Overall a nice way to spend the afternoon here. And not a very expensive entry ticket.

$25/adult entry fee. This is a fun little zoo packed with exhibits. PHOTOGRAPHERS: this is a great place for photos because of all the clear exhibit walls (instead of chain link fences). I definitely recommend visiting! They have some very interesting animals, like polar bears, arctic foxes, manatees, and active monkeys!

Easy to social distance; very few people were around. Paths were well marked to keep moving in one direction. Didn't see as many animals as we would have liked due to closures for safety. Interactive touch kiosks and high touch areas were closed. However, some play areas were left open for kids; parents can sit, kids can run around and enjoy. Also, the view of Mt. Rainier when you enter/exit, flowering plants and grounds were still stunning!

Always enjoying our visits at Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium, this is definitely the best place to spend some quality time with your kids, discovering all those animals and birds. They like the trail and the exhibits that can discover many things about the animals! The Aquarium with different species of sea creatures, colorful fishes, sharks and jellyfishes it’s very interesting for kids of all ages. This time while visiting, the Aquarium and all indoor exhibits were closed, but we enjoyed kids area, penguins, elephant, the tigers and the rest! Highly recommend this place to visit! We enjoyed!

We've been coming here for years and always enjoy being at the zoo. The attraction for PD Zoo is the aquariums. The zoo is small and will take 2-3 hours to see everything. They have done a good job controlling the crowd sizes during COVID but it does diminish the zoo experience because the concession stands are closed and some of the areas are no longer accessible. Most of the animal exhibits are well designed and maintained and you can see the zoo takes a lot of pride in conservation. The elephant exhibit needs some work though... Not sure what is going on with it but it looks quite sad.

Too many exhibits closed. We have been to other zoos during COVID and they remain open, all exhibits. To me this is just laziness and using COVID as an excuse to shut things down.

Such a fun zoo! We bought ice cream halfway through. Just wish more of the animals had been out. It seems like there were a lot of empty or single occupied exhibits (such as the elephant enclosure). You can touch a lot of the sea creatures. Overall it was well worth it. Pay online for a discount. There are strollers and wheelchairs to rent. Also a carousel to ride in the rental area.

It was my first time coming here and I was amazed. The aquarium was really big and I loved how dark it was in some places. It made me feel like I was in the ocean. I felt bad for some of the animals though. They were cute and all but watching them pace back and forth made me feel bad for them. Other than that, this zoo is a great place for any age group.

I really love this zoo. The keeper chats are so interesting! The aquarium is top notch, one of the best I've been to, and aquariums are my THING. Can't wait for the new one to open next summer. Can't wait for the new polar bears! Can't wait for the new walruses to be introduced to the public! It's a great place to bring my grandson. We now have a routine when we go, so that we can visit all of our animal friends. He loves standing "like a tree" in the budgie place, waiting for one of them to land and eat from his seed stick. The end of our trek is always a few minutes of play at the playground, then feeding the goats and getting ice cream.

I absolutely love this Zoo. There are a lot of cool animals like Tigers, Fish, Sharks, Penquins, Lizards, Sloths, Elephants, and much more, and there are daily activities and kid zones. Theres food and plenty of benches. There is a theater for shows at around noon. There is two aquariums with sharks and exotic fish. The price is not very much. A lot of walking though, very big and spread out.

Went with friends to see the Zoolights! Amazing, beautiful, artistic, imaginative, and so much more! The hot chocolate (ask for whipped cream) was surprisingly 😋 yummy. My favorite exhibits were the rainbow 🌈 tunnel, penguins singing 🐧, the 🐐 goats, and the ☃️ snowman ❣️

My 15 year old and I really enjoyed our afternoon at the zoo. He loved the monkeys, they gave us a pretty good acrobatics show. I enjoyed making friends with the octopus. The zookeepers were friendly, knowledgeable and easy to listen to. I enjoyed learning about Suki the Diva elephant, listening to the red wolves howl (rare apparently), and the tiger roar. Looking forward to going back once the new aquarium is open.

We went for Zoo lights, and this has become a family tradition for my family. It's a nice way to get out and get some fresh air and may e a light up necklace or gloves and feel like a kid again. The lights are beautiful, and they had added more this year. I highly recommend this funight and so will you. My children are grown but they love it too. And so do my grandchildren. We have added this to our Christmas each year.

This zoo and aquarium is really charming and fantastic. There were several opportunities for our little one to learn about the animals, the keepers were out talking about their animals, and the animals were very easy to view. Both the human areas and animal habitats were clean and well-kept. It took about an hour for my family and toddler to walk leisurely through the exhibits. You could easily spend more time, though.

I'm really glad that they made it available during covid-19, however even then it felt like there want that much to do. We walked the park in about 2 hours. All in all I really enjoyed getting out and being able to see the animals.

Its over priced for what you get. They have a qtr of the animals compared to woodland park zoo . We saw less them 20 exhibits and half were empty. it was over as soon as it started. I understand covid and changes but it didn't seem like even with the sections they closed because of covid that they had many more exhibits before covid. Its hyped up as a zoo and aquarium but its not much of either very un-impressive.

We visited this zoo for the first time and were very pleased. We purchased tickets online for a specific day and time. We really appreciated the timed entry, social distancing requirement, and mask requirement. We went right away when they opened and many animals were out and about. I would recommend reading the guidelines well before you go. I did not and we were late due to it. Luckily they were not busy and let us in anyway.

An excellent zoo to explore with small children. Small enough to be completely doable in an hour and a half to two and a half hours, with great exhibits. COVID mitigation procedures are very family friendly and effective, leading to a feeling of a private zoo trip.

They have a great zoo and aquarium combo. It isn't a huge zoo but nice to get through in a few hours. Our favorites were the elephants, polar bear, and the part of the aquarium with the sharks and rays.

Are you looking for animals? This place has 'em! Tons of exhibits and a huge variety of animals. We spent hours there and had a great time interacting with all the animals. Due to Covid you will have to booked a timed ticket to enter the park at a set time. The cost for the amount of fun we had was super reasonable.

We went during the "pumpkin days" so the zoo was festive for the halloween season. Most of the animals were sleeping but it was a good experience. Our favorite was the walrus. He was living his best life doing back flips. Love that guy! The Pacific aquarium was very nice. I think that one was my favorite. The zoo had a walking path for everyone. We made our reservations online. It wasn't crowded and everyone maintained social distance and kept their masks on. There no restaurants open so eat before you go or map out a place to eat after.

My son had a post-op follow up appt at Seattle Children's Hospital so we went out early to make a weekend of fun instead of just the hospital. We had never been to Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium so that was our weekend fun. I've been to a lot of zoos & aquariums over the years & this one didn't disappoint, it was interactive, educational & fun for all ages. We especially loved the polar bears & Zoo keeper talk and loved spending lots of time inside & outside with the walruses. Would definitely recommend even on a rainy drizzling day like we had.

Someone else recently reviewed and felt very similar to how I feel. Its quite sad for me to write this review... I wanted to give the zoo a chance and enjoy seeing the animals with my 2 year old...what a great thing it can be for learning. However the enclosures are sad, run down and small. One of the tigers was pacing in front of the glass back and forth, back and forth - look this captivity behavior up. Its a coping behavior when they are distressed in captivity. Its not a behavior done in the wild. The sea lions are sleek and fast and they have a very small tank for their big size. The lone elephant on the cement slab enclosure!!!! Are you kidding me? They are so intelligent and social and it has to be such a depressing existence. Zero toys or mental stimulation that I could see. I'm completely disappointed...I wanted so badly to see animals that were well cared for in decent size enclosures, and its not at all. Perhaps you'll be satisfied to get a glimpse at the animals and have no regard for the life the animals have at this zoo, but this eats at me and makes it unenjoyable. I'll never understand how the staff work there and must love animals, and yet it remains this way. Just too bad and too sad for me to enjoy or recommend. I thought this was 2020 in the USA and we understood what animals are entitled to. Guess not...

This Zoo, and I use the term loosely, needs to be shut down. The animals are kept in awful areas. The polar bear area makes me want to cry. Absolutely not ok. Why are they even allowed to continue operating? Many of the areas seem empty and you can’t even spot an animal! So disappointing!! Oregon Zoo is 100% better! Animals there look happy, all of the enclosures are well maintained. Will never take my family here again.

My kids a fun trip to the Zoo, there are quite a bit animal. I liked their asian animal exhibit and arctic exhibit. Looking at the tiger up close was scary. We went in winter, so all the animals were out soaking the sun. They have closed all indoor exhibits, kiosk and common area because of covid, it’s sad but I appreciate the measures they have taken to control the spread of virus. Roads have marking on them to guide visitors, and they have installed sanitizer machines every few steps. It was fun to see how they have put masks on statues, reenforcing the guideline and makes it easier to have kids wear mask because one of their favorite animal is wearing the same. We were very scared to make this trip. Haven’t really gone out to public places in last eight months. It was really easy maintain safe distance in the zoo and really did not have to touch anything. The conservation have glass wall that separates the animal habitat from visitors, and we had to be little bit careful with our kid to make sure he is not touching the glasses or leaning on them. All in all it was “paisa wasool”.

I'd have to say I was highly disappointed with our visit to this zoo. It seems that half of the main attractions are inside such as an aquarium or viewing exhibits and due to COVID these areas are all closed. So understandably so, we can not go to inside exhibits because of the close proximity and inside environment however I am perfectly able to visit the gift shop...indoors and spend money. Makes total sense.

Alright it's not the same it was nice having set times to go in. As well as fewer people. You have to go in one direction and it is nice. We took my grand daughter on Saturday. They did not give my son-in-law a military discount because "tickets are already discounted" to $20 per person! Might have been worth it if the aquarium had actually been opened. Even some of the kids zone was closed. We saw about 8 or 10 animals, and it felt like half the exhibits were closed or under construction. I'm disabled (use a walker) so I needed their electric wheelchair to get around - that was another $25 "deposit" that was non-refundable. So we paid $85 for an hour and a half. Do I recommend? Sure, if you can afford it and have nothing better to do. Would I do it again? Absolutely not. However the surrounding area and dog park was worth the drive.

The Point Defiance Zoo is a staple for the Tacoma area. A zoo membership is worth the cost if you are planning on going more than twice a year or are wanting a discount for Northwest Trek. COVID: They have shut down areas that usually have a higher concentration of people enclosed in a small space but the arrow s on the walkway keep the traffic moving pretty smoothly.

Cold and foggy so not many animals out, but a fantastic trip overall, very safe and clean and handle appropriately with the pandemic.

I typically don't like zoos but this one was well kept, smallish, and reasonably priced. I visited on a weekday and there weren't many people so it made for a relaxing afternoon.

Not worth the money half the exhibits are closed.

Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium was a nice outing.A few exhibits were closed, primarily those in enclosed spaces, and we weren't able to feed or pet any animals. This was due to covid. Beyond those things it took us about a hour and a half to walk the park. Great for younger kids but not much of a wow factor for older kids. I would love to go back post Covid and in the summer to see the park at its peak.

I went to zoolights for the first time and it was a blast! Getting in was a breeze and the lights were great! A bit short, but who says you can't go around one more time?😉

Great zoo and aquariums. Complete and utter lack of river otters. Very disappointing. Fortunately there are a pair at NW Trek.

Loved the zoo even with covid restrictions. Will definitely return when fully open!

Normally I'm not a fan of zoo's due to the small enclosures, but my daughter really wanted to go for her birthday, this zoo was great! They had lots of space in the enclosures, multiple things for the animals to interact with, and overall the animals looked a lot happier than other zoo's. The staff was super nice, knowledgeable, and helpful. Quick to answer any questions about the animals and tell the stories about them. The zoo was huge and even with multiple things being closed due to covid we spent about 2 hours there. Will Definitely be back again!

  • 1/5 jesikarabid 3 years ago on Google
There are very few animals, the enclosures are small and the animals are unhappy. The cafe only sells hot dogs, chips, and canned soda. Better off bringing your own food. Tried to make the best of it because the place is expensive, but not worth going back to see animals in distress.

  • 5/5 David Y. 3 years ago on Google
I like our zoo. It's cool, and just the right size. Wish we had been here when the kids were little. *Sigh* Maybe with grandkids someday. Staff is knowledgeable, and friendly, and up for any kind of question. The two aquariums are closed right now, which is a shame, but it's still a fun place. Take the kids and go. Spend plenty of time.

Poin Defiance zoo was a good experience. Given the current circumstances with the COVID19 restrictions, the zoo was very prepared in implementing the social distancing and cleanliness. I just wish there were more animals to see and the aquarium was open.

Pretty big place and lots of ups and down to see the exhibits. Be prepared to walk quite a bit on uneven terrain. Places are wheelchair friendly. Lots of animals and aquarium for just $20 is actually worth it. Bring own food to save money. Long lines at cafe and ice cream shop on weekends. My fav was spotted eagle rays and shark. Enjoyed my outing.

  • 5/5 Rebecca S. 2 years ago on Google
It was alot of fun! They only had like one or two of each animal but the aquariums were amazing! You can pet the stingrays and horseshoe crabs! They have two nice parks for all ages. Definitely going back!

  • 5/5 Pei-Chin W. 2 years ago on Google
Nice and neat zoo+aquarium. Very satisfied with an expectation that it is not a huge place. Visited on weekday, only plaza cafe was opened, offering burgers, fries, pizza, ice cream, and popcorn. The training demo at the wild wonders outdoor theater had different animals at different show time.

  • 5/5 Jedediah S. 2 years ago on Google
Great little zoo and aquarium. It is not large but the exhibits are all done very well. The aquariums I need especially the one with hammerhead sharks and manta rays. The ground themselves are kind of like a nice garden and there are lots of spots for picnicking. They currently have timed tickets (Writing this as of August 1, 2021) Also the parking lot. Throughout the day so morning is best

Arrived at 9:30. Took us a half a day to complete the different loops. Animals were out and about. Very clean. No big crowds on a Saturday Morning. We were able to feed goats, and touch sting rays, horseshoe crabs, and starfish. The kid zone was open and clean.

My son & I visited yesterday. What a great place! Lots of things to see. Only bad thing is, perhaps because of the rain, all the vendors were closed. The place is NOT friendly to those with mobility issues. It would have helped to be able to rent an Amigo cart.

Absolutely gorgeous animals, and fun exhibits. Jammin' with Jellies was super cool as well and we got to pet real live moon jellies!

Fun little zoo and aquarium near Tacoma. Perfect for families. Expect to spend 2-3 hrs

  • 4/5 T 2 years ago on Google
All of the glass was extremely smudged and all the stands were closed other than the restaurant at the front gates and the gift shop. I'm guessing its due to low staffing which is completely fine. You can finish the zoo & aquarium in an hour or two.

  • 5/5 Mark R. 2 years ago on Google
My family and I always have a great time at the zoo. Today we could only go for a couple hours but it was so worth it, just to get out for a bit. We have our membership with the zoo (which I highly recommend) so even if we don't see everything in one day we can go back the next week-end without worrying about an entrance fee.

It was a great experience for my children. Not as big as the Denver zoo but still a good size. We enjoyed the kids area. The playground was great foe them to run off some energy. I like the water play area and of course the animals. For us it was a few hour experience not a full day but that's all we had. All in all good place to take children.

Zoo lights is always a treat. Safe environment to see light displays that are well put together. The kids love it, and so do we. Missed last year, but have been going for many years now as a family outing.

This whole area is beautiful. From the parks to the zoo, everything is very well laid out. There is a road that is called the 5 mile drive and the whole road stays pretty scenic. I saw deer, birds, raccoons, squirrels in the short time I visited. Definitely worth a visit

  • 5/5 Tensie P. 2 years ago on Google
Always a fun afternoon. Very educational and the keepers are great to speak to when you can catch them! A lot of diversity in the species you can see on a given day but also not overwhelmingly huge. Lots of families and is usually moderately busy but the crowds ebb and flow so you can get some excellent viewing! It does seem like there are less options right now as far as dining and activities due to the off season and probably Covid too. Definitely check out the otters 🦦, polar bear 🐻‍❄️, elephants 🐘 and lemurs! What am I saying?! Check out all of them! They’re all cool from the boas and scorpions to armadillos and (fan fav) tigers. Learn and take notes on conservation and how you can help keep these amazing creatures around for the future generations! ❤️

Just became Deluxe Household Member after 2 visits. Love this zoo! the staff always goes above and beyond and is incredibly helpful and friendly. The zookeepers are also incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. Lots of zoo talks/feeding shows every hour. LOTS for your kids to do!! We typically spend about 3-4hrs each visit, you CAN bring your own food and drinks, but they also have multiple spots to get food (the main one being by the entrance) for the adults they do serve cocktails in a can! (1 per person per time). The food has actually been pretty great and the kettle corn is awesome. Overall I love going to this zoo with family and even became a member. It’s 100% worth it!

Our family loved this place. Many places for picnics, plant and animal life is plenty. View of the river is just stunning. We would be back. Amazing trail just down the road don’t forget to check out the coin machines near the restroom and gift shop. Menu in pictures for cafe .

The Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium is simply amazing. It's a great place to visit for families, groups, and couples. The zoo is home to a wide variety of animals from all over the world, and the aquarium is full of colorful and exotic marine life. One of the highlights of the zoo is the large tiger exhibit, where you can watch these majestic creatures play and relax in their natural habitat. The polar bears are also a must-see, as they are always up to something interesting. In the aquarium, you'll have the chance to get up close and personal with animals like jellyfish, octopuses, and sea otters. Plus, the exhibits are beautifully designed and interactive, making for an immersive experience for visitors of all ages. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, always happy to answer questions and provide insights into the animals' behaviors. The zoo and aquarium also host special events throughout the year, like Nighttime Zoo and Boo at the Zoo, which are always a hit. Overall, the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium is a fantastic destination for anyone who loves animals and wants to learn more about them. It's one of the top attractions in the Pacific Northwest, and for good reason. I highly recommend a visit!

Have the annual membership and love going here. Point Defiance is not as big as Woodland Park Zoo, but it is easier to get around. Plus it has an aquarium. I love both. However I enjoy taking the kids here more cuz it's an easier day.

It was a small Zoo, nice to pass a few hours, we were excited to have seen the polar Bear up close, the aquarium was nice, ice cream was so good, visiting on a Saturday morning and there was no Wait in our line but the members line appeared to be a significant Wait. Very clean facilities and grounds.

This was a great zoo for the price! It was big enough to have some unique animals and small enough to spend 2-3 hours and see everything. We loved watching the polar bear sister wrestle and seeing the red wolves! Well-kept and entertaining! Parking was easy to find and it was free!

  • 4/5 Joshua S. 7 months ago on Google
A really awesome Zoo that offers discounted entry to members of other Zoos part of the AZA. Really nice enclosures for the animals and tons of shade for the spectators. Animals seemed well taken care of. The zoo had lots of interactive shows and presentations to keep us busy. The aquarium was small but a nice bonus Knocking off a store because quite a few exhibits were closed and it was very busy on a Saturday in August. Get there early for parking, it was completely full by the afternoon.

Well, I think that was a fantastic way to spend an afternoon (especially with my 2yr old nephew). The zoo is great, not too big, I think we completed in about 3hrs leisurely walking through. But we didn’t sit for any show. Very nice aquariums which kept old and young very entertained. Seeing polar bears playing in the water, penguins putting a show, sharks swimming over your head, meerkats being meerkats, and hearing wolves howling and tigers growling, all made the whole experience very worth it for the price. And, cherry on top, the views on Mt Rainier were a spectacular sight from the entrance patio.

This was the most kid friendly zoo I've ever been to, and honestly it being so hands on made it even more fun for my sister and I. We got to bring out our inner child and we had a blast. We also were estatic to see an opossum and puffins, along with all of the other animals and critters. The magic show they do in the afternoon was a blast as well. We had debated on going bc we thought it would be super cheesy, but it was a blast and we were laughing super hard by the end of it.

We have not been to the zoo in 15 years. This trip we visited the Pacific seas aquarium and the Arctic tundra. The polar bear experience was a popular one. The puffin and otters are always fun to watch

  • 5/5 Becky R. 6 months ago on Google
You can tell that the zoo is trying to upgrade a lot and it is showing and turning out wonderfully! So much effort is being put into the environment, animals, and ambiance by the staff. Happy to be back after 2 years and so surprised by everything. Well done!

The zoo in Tacoma is always a fun place to visit. All the animals were very active when we went this time around, although they aren't always. The keeper chats were super informative about the animals they have, and they are all very well taken care of. The smaller aquarium is currently closed for renovation and will open in spring 2024, but the main aquarium is still open. The Wild Wonders show was absolutely amazing for both kids and adults! You can also feed the birds for 2 bucks it was a fun experience, especially for the littles!

  • 3/5 Lisa R. 6 months ago on Google
It’s a beautiful place with many beautiful flowers, trees and views. But the zoo was just ok. MANY animals were hard to see or find in their exhibit. And it is a small zoo with not a lot of animals to see. I think I enjoyed the aquarium part a bit more. They do have some nice spots for kids, but we didn’t need. At $22 online, which I understand why, I’m not sure it was worth it. I’ve been to many zoos all across the country and this won’t be memorable

My mom came to town for her birthday, and neither of us had been to this Zoo & Aquarium before! The animals look so much happier than I'm used to, and their enclosures are huge. We had such a great time, and when we went, all the kids were dressed up for Halloween! 🥹👻 P.S. The cafe service was awesome and the food was delish! 🥙
