The Black River Gorges National Park is the largest of the national parks in Mauritius. With a bit of luck you can marvel at over 300 different plant species and nine bird species that are only found on the island. The park is located in the southwest of the island state, around 40 kilometers south of the capital Port Louis and 22 kilometers south of Flic en Flac. Entry is free. The Visitor Center is located at the Black River entrance in the northwest of the national park. You can also park your car in the free parking spaces here. There is also a campsite at the visitor center. The park has a total of four entrances where you can park your car free of charge. The best way to explore Black River Gorges National Park is on foot. There are around 60 kilometers of hiking trails available to you. Take enough water and a little food with you, there is no way to buy food in the national park apart from the kiosks. There are also benches and tables at the park's viewing points where you can take a break and have a picnic.

My recent visit to Black River Gorges National Park left me captivated by its pristine natural beauty and awe-inspiring views. This expansive park is a haven for nature enthusiasts, offering a remarkable experience amidst breathtaking landscapes. What I loved most about Black River Gorges National Park was the sheer abundance of nature. The park is home to lush forests, cascading waterfalls, and diverse wildlife. The untouched beauty of the surroundings creates a sense of tranquility and allows visitors to reconnect with nature on a profound level. The views within the park are simply magnificent. Whether it was the sweeping vistas from the viewpoints or the serene atmosphere surrounding the waterfalls, every corner of the park offered a feast for the eyes. The panoramic views of the rolling hills, dense forests, and pristine rivers were truly breathtaking and created lasting memories. While the park offers several trails and routes to explore, I do have a suggestion for improvement. It would be wonderful if there was a dedicated route that provides easier access to one of the waterfalls. This would enable visitors of all ages and abilities to enjoy a leisurely walk and admire the beauty of the waterfall up close. Creating such a route would enhance the overall accessibility and allow more people to experience the enchantment of the park. Overall, Black River Gorges National Park is a nature lover's paradise. Its untouched landscapes, remarkable views, and abundant flora and fauna make it a must-visit destination. Immerse yourself in the tranquility and natural splendor of this national park, and be prepared to be awe-struck by the wonders that await you.

The Black River George National Park is the only one in Mauritius and was proclaimed as such in 1994. It extends in the southwestern part of the island with an area of 6,754 hectares, which corresponds to around 3.5% of the total land area of Mauritius. Black River George National Park is home to a large number of endemic flora and fauna. It is one of the rarest forests in the world.

Incredible place to visit! The views are simply spectacular. Would definitely recommend that you pack a water bottle if you decide to hike. Also be weary of your steps as the ground may be slippery at some point if it has rained recently. If you’re not up for the hike (as it may be time consuming) try having a picnic as it is a stunning location.

There is a string of scenic viewpoints in this National park where one can visit either in tourist buses or by their own car. Viewpoints are really good. Birdwatching can be another activity planned here. However, we did not find this place extraordinary. Can be skipped if one has tight schedule while visiting Mauritius. Not worth spending more than couple of hours. Ull have to walk a bit in someplaces which are not reachable bh car completely.

We went to an off track trek. Not recommended if you’re not with a guide but as always breathtaking views. Wear good shoes and careful about the wasps.

Very nice and beautiful park. Don't know all the router, the one we took was a bit wild. You need to be fit to take the Maccabee route all the way to the top. It gets very slippery the higher you go and you need to use the trees and roots to hoist yourself up in places. Be very careful going down. This route has breaktaking views. Make sure you take enough water with and proper shoes. There are nice picnic tables to make use off. Lots of pretty birds 🐦 around.

One thing that makes mauritius a beautiful sight is the greenery and the blend of blue skies, beautiful turquoise oceans, and mountains. The view from this national park is nothing short of beautiful. However, I was disappointed we couldn't get to the foot of the waterfalls, which would have been much more fun than just looking at them, but regardless, it's a beautiful sight. 😍

Black River Gorges National Park is a reserved forest in Mauritius. Offers a great panoramic view, specifically from the Gorges view point. There are several waterfalls in this park. You explore those by foot. It was a great experience for me to walk through the dense forest following mountain streams and reach the starting of waterfalls. This location is about one hour drive from Port Louis.

First of all, i'm VERY surprised to have never known about this stunning place while i was a child. If you either love hiking, running or simply strolling in nature, just to get away from the busy, hectic daily life, then this IS a very relaxing place to be. But if you're a novice like me, and choose to go for the 0.6km hike to 'La Grotte' then be prepared to be very disappointed as the 'Grotte' is so NOT the cave we were expecting to see but a simple tiny Virgin Mary with a lit candle there, which unless anyone knows the reason behind that being there, don't make any sense whatsoever... Saying that, the walk in itself through the forest is well worth it. And seeing the fairly big river at the end of the 'La Grotte' hike is also refreshing. What's also nice, is the ability to have picnics at the end of your hike, as there are a couple of benches and tables, either covered (for rainy times) or opened to nature. So bare that in mind if you do decide to bring some sandwiches with you. All in all, it definitely is worth visiting, whether you're a seasonal, professional or novice adventurer,as there are much longer hikes up to 9 km distance, which could take up to 4 or more hours, depending on how fit you are. So for those hikes, the obvious walking shoes and bottles of water are definitely a must. Just make sure you get there as early as 7am if you feel like or are planning to make a whole day of it, also to start the day, all being well, with not too many people around. Enjoy and be safe at all times...

Great experience. There are different hiking trails and different entry points giving you a variety of options. We went from Petrin to the kiosk, and from there, down to the black river entrance. Lots of guavas to pick on the Petrin side.

Great views and a really good hike to the top of a summit. Says it is a 4 hour hike, but more like 3 if you're averagely fit and don't spend ages at the view points (3). Last section just below peak is pulling yourself up on ropes but is not technical, the ropes are there for safety and assistance (would be tough to get up one section without them mind!)

Well that was an extremely tough walk. I was expecting a gentle stroll in the forest yet we did a monster climb of nearly 300 meters on rather treacherous, slippery paths. Had I known what the hike entailed before visiting there is no way that I would have done such a difficult walk. The day started off in pouring rain but that cleared eventually and we continued our walk. We reached the peak after about two and a half hours of walking though there was a choice to go further. It was a really really tough walk that I will not do again. Find Nomadic Charles and / or Luxury Travel Camel on Instagram for more fun photo’s and commentary.

Easily accessible vista of the highest peak on the mountain, a short walk from the road. Will find shops offering goods to the left, and monkeys waiting for food on the right. Beautiful spot.

Very nice nature. Without track shoes isn’t possible! We went from center (Black river entrance)to - Mare Aux Joncs Waterfall. The track takes 90mins one way. Be carefull you have cross the river many times. The stones are slippy. Bring drink and food! If you want to refresh yourself under the water (but its not so deep for swimming) take a towel and swimsuit. Follow the orange signs on the trees that show you where to go. Not recommend for little kids.

It is like stepping into a green paradise with beautiful trails surrounded by flowers and singing birds. As you walk, you'll discover stunning viewpoints where you can see the whole island, and hidden waterfalls that add a peaceful soundtrack to your journey. It is like a nature sanctuary, showing off Mauritius' unique plants and rare birds. If you enjoy hiking, there are cool trails. It's a bit of a workout, but the incredible views at the end make it totally worth it. This park is a must-visit.

Beautiful park and amazing scenery. Word advice. Wear long trousers and dark clothing as the bugs and flies were UNBEARABLE. They didn’t leave us alone for about 4 hours and were biting through our tops. Would still recommend though!

Easy track, only some rocky steps at the top. Enjoying the beautiful views, mountains. Best training for trails. It’s worth it.
