Don't miss this iconic museum of Mauritius to see one of the last rare Dodo skeletons and learn about extincted national bird. To tribute the bird, there is a own hall with a variety of display pieces. Further more you learn about the not-extincted animals in the sea, on the land and on the sky. Sometimes the presentation is a little bit old fashioned but mad with passion for detail The entry is free of charge.

Fantastic museum with free entrance and a welcoming cool interior. It is housed in a lovely old building and displays birds, sea creatures, insects, etc and of course the Dodo exhibit. There are many interesting facts to discover and there is a sitting area outside under the shady trees.

An ok place to visit that needs some updating and modernisation to keep visitors engaged. Other government sanctioned museums are in better conditions than this place, so it would be great if they are able to update here as well. The one interesting area was a section dedicated to the dodo where you can find a near-full skeleton of the dodo whilst also providing some insight into the history of the dodo and research into finding remains. Overall, this is a relatively short visit with the dodo skeleton as its highlight.

Recently renovated and updated with many more exhibits than before - this place deserves much more recognition and praise for their innovation and step forward in modern times (there was no air conditioning before). Large specimens are put forward much more boldly and it shows!

Nicely surprised by the Dodo Museum which happens to be not only about the dodo. My memories about this museum goes back to when i was still in primary school and it was the only visit i did there. Going back with the family visiting the island i must say it's worth the detour and very enjoyable for adults and kids! A must-see!

If you are in port Louis, visiting the museum is a must. It's free of charge and not time consuming if you only walk around the museum. Items in the gift shop are interesting and quite affordable. The museum is clean and relaxing.

A must-visit for all those who are captivated by History, Nature as well as artefacts in general. My attention was especially drawn to the section dedicated to the World War and the stories of the Mauritians who served therein. Unbelievable and totally enchanting!

A small natural history museum that offers a small insight into the fauna, but overall focuses more on the dodo. The exhibition on the first floor about the First and Second World Wars is also very informative. Admission is free.

The museum is closed until further notice. One has to go to the door to find out. There is a park right in front; It is not very well cared for, but it has interesting flora. This makes the trip a not so important waste of time.

Nice and free museum. You can see the fauna and flora of Mauritius and above all, a room is dedicated to sleeping with the only whole skeleton. (That’s what we came for). On the other hand, it should be given a fresh and clean look because the animals seem to be full of. dust and have had their day... Too bad

Having museums in Mauritius is crucial and this museum is filled with interesting collections. It would be nice to modernize the place a bit and have maybe interactive screens and headphones to learn more. A guide would be an add-on also. The place does need better curating.

(Translated by Google) They couldn’t get inside, because it closes at 15.30! But nearby there is an amazing park with mangroves, which may have been preserved since the time when the whole island was overgrown with such a forest. This is a magical experience. I would like to visit such a forest.

Been years that I visited the musuem and I got the opportunity to roam about again to day and also there was a stamp exhibition on site...... I would gladly invite those interested in stamps ..FDC ..mini sheets to pop in as it will be a highly educational event for them.

Should have been way better... not enough about our history and culture. From end to end it's a mere one hour walk, I feel sorry for the tourists. Even my kids asked me that's it?

Today i went to Port Louis with some friends. The museum's entrance is free. We wanted to visit some of the museums and visiting the national history museum was fun as we enjoyed our time. Although we didn't go there to learn new things, we spent approximately 30 minutes visiting the place and reading about the origin of so many animals in Mauritius( extinct and endemic). We jokingly took the pictures of the bugs and the quantity of the insects were astonishing. (Sorry if you are disgusted by the picture)

  • 3/5 Lee S. 1 year ago on Google
Its really great that places like this exist. But you need to manage your expectations. The museum is free to enter but much smaller than I expected. It is essentially just 3-4 rooms on the ground-floor of the building. It was quiet when we visited on a Saturday morning. We spent less than 30 minutes here. There's a gift shop and we'd have loved to support the museum by purchasing some items, but unfortunately it was locked up - possibly they had gone to lunch.

This is a fabulous and seriously underrated gem of a museum. And it's free! Yes, it's small (as noted by the guide books) but packed full of amazing birds, fish, shells, insects, and of course, The Dodo Gallery. Everything you could ever want to know about this quirky, extinct bird and the only complete unique skeleton of it in the world. Would highly recommend for a 30 - 45 minute viewing if you are visiting Port Louis, or Mauritius in general.
