Nice place to get an introduction to Mauritius history. Location is simply great and the building is preserved very well. Entrance fees is free for everyone. There were few exhibits outside, but not maintained at all, the carriage display is an interesting thing to have a close look.

Wow the house that the museum is in is stunning with a lovely forest area nearby. You park near the fountain in the front driveway and entrance is free. You cannot take photos inside but I wish they had an online catalogue somewhere. They have numerous interesting artifacts and tons of information. Walking around the old house, creaking floorboards and all adds to the historical feel. Out the back is an actual train carriage that the governor used to use. There is a small artisan village and gift shop. It would be great if they had cannon / bell replicas for sale. A museum tea garden would also be really nice, the setting is very picturesque.

Learning about historical background. The museum is just fantastic, discovering from the Dutch, French, British every single details about the people that had marked the country. Lots of antiques to be seen. We call it the Naval Museum... I have to precise that there is a facility entrace for wheel chair, in which i found at the back of the building. On my details i have mention No Facilities. May be a sign and a parking for disable could be arranged by concerned. When you come to Mauritius, add to your bucket list as it is a must to visit the mauritian museums.

Stand alone small museum about history of Mauritius. This museum is housed in Château Gheude, a national heritage building dating back to 1772. The place is quite out-of-maintainance and most of information available were in French so it was hard for non-french speakers to feel engaged. Its a three storeys museum with no entrance fee but don't forget to leave some "staff tips" in the box before you leave.

So much information about Mauritian history in one place. This museum could be transform as a "caverne d'alibaba" with more interactive set up. Could include small shops selling souvenirs of the museum for tourist. This would help to bring more funds which could be invested in the maintenance of this beautiful mansion.

After 58 years it's changed a bit. The history is an important integral part of the island. But they seem to have lost a number of exhibits from the Grand Port battle that should have been preserved. But still worth a visit.

(Translated by Google) Very nice collection of objects. The plates are very detailed. The story is well transcribed. The house is in a state that begins to ask for help ... But nice visit and free. I recommend it to you. (Original) Très beau rassemblement d'objets. Les planches sont très détaillées. L'histoire est bien retranscrite. La demeure est dans un état qui commence à demander de l'aide... Mais belle visite et gratuite. Je vous la conseille.

An essential place to discover the history of Mauritius. I would have really liked to see the absolute symbol of this country: the Dodo bird, but there is absolutely nothing relevant about it in the whole museum.

Must see when visiting Mahebourg. Very intersing exibition presenting history of Mauritius in English and French located in the old building in the park. A lot of different items in the collection, including painting, artistic dishes, various tools, etc. Unfortunately we were really disappointed to see and feel that the smoke from fires set up in the park was everywhere. It was difficult to breath in and outside the building. The smoke is poisining the visitors including children as well as the employees of the museum. This is not acceptable. I have also one advice to share regarding the display of the boards presenting Mauritius history on the first floor. Boards are really great but should be hanged on the walls from left to right, otherwise the chronological order is disrupted and visitors are confused. It seems to be a quick fix. Thanks!

Very great place to be if you are intrested to know the history, you will spend 30 to 45 minutes here, and highly recommended Museum in Mauritius. The museums needs immediate renovation but it is still in good shape with genuine artifacts and remnants of The Dutch and France without forgetting the british Rule.

The Naval museum is a national treasure to Mauritius, it has seen a lot of wars, regime, governors, prime ministers and it is still here. Last time i visited that place, i was 10 and now after 30 years, i visited it with my kids, it brought a lot of memories but i am really really sad that unfortunately it is in a pity state, i who is a lover of history, my heart is broken to see it like that. I know that my voice is like a drop of water in the ocean but please don't let this heritage"patrimoine" disappear.

The Mahebourg Museum, also known as the Mahebourg Naval Museum, is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the rich history and culture of Mauritius. Located in the charming town of Mahebourg on the southeast coast of the island, the museum offers visitors a fascinating look into the island's maritime heritage. The museum is housed in a historic building that was once used as a naval storehouse during the French colonial era. The building has since been restored and transformed into a modern museum, featuring a range of exhibits and artifacts highlighting the island's naval history. The exhibits at the Mahebourg Museum cover a range of topics, from the island's early navigational history to the more recent developments in naval technology and maritime commerce. Visitors can explore the museum's many exhibits, which include models of ships, navigational instruments, paintings, photographs, and artifacts. One of the most popular exhibits at the museum is the replica of the 'Belle Poule,' a French naval frigate that played a significant role in the history of the island. The ship was the first to arrive in Mahebourg following the British takeover of the island in 1810, and its arrival marked the end of French colonial rule in Mauritius. The Mahebourg Museum is not only an important cultural landmark but also an educational institution that provides visitors with a wealth of knowledge and information about the island's history and culture. The museum also offers guided tours and educational programs for visitors of all ages. Overall, the Mahebourg Museum is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Mauritius, particularly for those interested in history, culture, and maritime heritage. Its fascinating exhibits, rich history, and beautiful setting make it an unforgettable experience for anyone who visits.

A Charming Time Capsule with Room for Improvement Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ I recently visited the Mahebourg Museum, and while it may not have changed much over the years, it still holds a certain charm. The museum's timeless atmosphere takes you back in time, allowing you to explore the rich history of Mahebourg and its surrounding areas. However, there are a few aspects that I believe could enhance the visitor experience. One of the notable drawbacks is the absence of a guide. While the museum's exhibits are interesting and informative, having a knowledgeable guide could have provided deeper insights and a more engaging experience. A guide would have been particularly helpful in uncovering hidden details and untold stories behind the artifacts and displays. Nevertheless, the museum manages to captivate visitors with its intriguing collection. The exhibits shed light on the region's cultural heritage, showcasing historical artifacts that offer a glimpse into the past. The museum effectively conveys the story of Mahebourg, allowing visitors to appreciate its significance and understand the local identity. One suggestion for improvement would be the inclusion of a multimedia room. Such a space could offer interactive displays, videos, and virtual tours, enhancing the overall historical literacy experience. By incorporating modern technology, the museum could provide a more immersive journey through time, allowing visitors to delve deeper into the historical narratives. Additionally, the museum could benefit from expanding its offerings to cater to younger visitors. Introducing more activities for children would not only make the museum more family-friendly but also foster an early interest in history. Interactive exhibits, hands-on activities, and educational games could inspire young minds and encourage a lifelong curiosity about the past. Overall, the Mahebourg Museum presents a charming snapshot of history, preserving the essence of the region's heritage. While it could benefit from certain improvements, such as the inclusion of a multimedia room and more activities for children, it remains an interesting place to explore. If you're a history enthusiast or simply curious about Mahebourg's past, it's definitely worth a visit.

The Museum is very interesting, I am glad that this is accessible to the general public for free. The collection of documents, pictures and artefacts are impressive and comprehensive. The museum sits on a big piece of land with lots of trees. The shade of the trees is very welcome in the hot climate of Mauritius. The reason I am giving it only three stars is that the building of the museum is falling apart, the timber is rotting and the roof has a tarp on it. The Mauritian government needs to spend some of the tourism taxes on landmarks like this! Let it sit for a few more years this has to be closed because it will become unsafe. And some of the idle sitting staff could fix up the toilet block outside. Great to have a toilet at all, but it could be better.

It seems as though pages of a book were pasted on the walls. It is a shame. This place has potential to be a wow experience. On the plus side it opens until 4pm on Saturdays.
