Shree Badavilinga Gudi in Hampi is a small but significant temple that holds great spiritual importance and serves as a testament to the rich cultural and religious heritage of the region. What immediately catches your eye at Shree Badavilinga Gudi is the imposing monolithic Shiva Linga, the largest such Linga in Hampi. This massive granite Linga is believed to be an ancient representation of Lord Shiva and has a sense of divine power and reverence that is palpable. The temple structure, though simple, has an aura of sanctity and serenity. Devotees and visitors can engage in prayers and rituals, offering their respects to Lord Shiva in this sacred place. What makes this temple even more unique is that it's always submerged in water. The sanctum sanctorum remains partially underwater due to the perennial flow of the Tungabhadra River, which adds an element of mystique and charm to the place. This natural setting adds to the spiritual ambiance and uniqueness of the temple. The picturesque location of Shree Badavilinga Gudi, surrounded by lush greenery and a serene pond, makes it a tranquil and peaceful spot for contemplation and devotion. The gentle sounds of the water add to the calming atmosphere, creating a harmonious space for seekers of spirituality and those who appreciate the beauty of nature. In conclusion, Shree Badavilinga Gudi is a sacred gem in Hampi that beautifully marries nature and spirituality. It's a place where you can immerse yourself in devotion while being one with the serene natural surroundings. Whether you are a religious pilgrim or a traveler seeking a tranquil escape, this temple offers a unique and enriching experience.

Badavilinga Temple is a wonderful temple in Hampi dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Badavilinga Temple in Hampi has the largest monolithic Shiva Linga in Hampi. The beautiful Linga is made of black stone. It has a height of 3 meters. It is believed that the temple has been in existence since the period of the Vijayanagara Empire. The person sitting outside is about 92 years old priest, who does worship daily to this deity without fail. When it come to devotion, age is just a number! The Badavilinga temple is located near the Lakshmi Narasimha Temple. .

Located adjacent to Lakshmi Narasimha Shrine this monolithic Shiva Linga is a must visit. It is approximately 3 meters tall and the pedestal remains in water through out the year. The differentiating point about this linga is three eyes (terinethra) are carved on the upper portion of the linga. A beautiful place to visit.

The "Badavilinga temple" located in Hampi is dedicated to "Lord Shiva". In this temple, the deity is worshiped as a lingam. Linga is one tenth in water, Badavi means poor girl who worshiped Shiva, that's why it's called Badavi Linga in Hampi. It is one of the beautiful temples of Hampi. Lord Shiva Lingam is situated in the middle of the temple surrounded by water. The lingam is half submerged in water and half is above the water level. There is a believe that one's wish will be fulfilled if the coin is landed on the lingam. The beautiful linga is made of black stone. Its height is 3 meters. The temple is believed to have existed since the time of the Vijayanagara Empire.

Visiting Shree Badavilinga Gudi in Hampi was a spiritual journey that left an indelible mark on my exploration of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nestled amidst the captivating ruins, this modest yet profoundly significant temple tells a tale of devotion and resilience. Shree Badavilinga Gudi exudes a serene ambiance that is both calming and spiritually uplifting. The sanctum, housing the massive linga dedicated to Lord Shiva, becomes a focal point for devotees and visitors seeking a moment of reflection and connection with the divine. The temple is named after the colossal Badavilinga, an iconic representation of Lord Shiva in the form of a linga. Carved out of a single black stone, the linga stands tall, symbolizing not just religious devotion but also the resilience and endurance of the people who worshipped here through centuries.

Located right next to the Lakshmi Narsimha Temple, the Badavilinga Temple houses an ancient large Monolithic Shiva Lingam carved out of a black stone. The Shiv Lingam is situated inside a small stone chamber. Unlike other sculptures in Hampi, this Shiva Lingam mostly appears to have in its original form, possibly because there was a very small or no damage happened to it during destruction. It is thus considered as the highly sacred place and worshipped by devotees.

Badava means poor. This temple was believed to be constructed by a poor lady, hence the name Badavalinga. The huge lingam is said to monolithic (made out of single stone). It's placed in between water and you are cannot go near the lingam. Even from far the lingam looks really good and attractive.

This is right next to Ugra Narasimha temple - both are monolithic. These are near Sri Krishna temple, a few mins of walking distance. Photography is allowed. Main entrance was locked, but we could see the Shiv linga. There didn't appear to be as much damage done during the destruction. Part of linga is submerged in the water.

This Linga is residing with the Ugra Narasimha idol and it is the biggest of all Lingas in Hampi. This gorgeous Linga is made of black stone, nearly 12 feet in height. Its inner sanctum has no ceiling. It is always in water since a canal passes through this temple.

The Shree Badavilinga Temple in Hampi is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is renowned for housing the largest monolithic Shiva Linga in Hampi. Here's a brief history: The temple's construction dates back to the Vijayanagara period in the 15th century, during the reign of King Krishnadevaraya. The name "Badavilinga" is derived from the Kannada words "badva," meaning poor, and "linga," representing the phallic form of Lord Shiva. According to local legend, a poor woman wished to build a temple for Lord Shiva but could not afford an idol. Instead, she prayed fervently and installed a simple Shiva Linga, which later became the Badavilinga. The Shree Badavilinga Gudi holds immense religious and historical significance, attracting devotees and tourists alike. The 3-meter high monolithic Shiva Linga stands within a small chamber, and it's continuously immersed in water that flows through a channel. This unique feature is a symbol of the Tungabhadra River's sacredness. Visitors are drawn to the temple not only for its religious importance but also for the architectural charm of its simple yet significant structure. Exploring the Shree Badavilinga Gudi provides a glimpse into the rich cultural and religious heritage of Hampi during the Vijayanagara Empire.

Badavi Linga shrine in Hampi is located next to the Lakshmi Narasimha shrine. This monolithic linga is about three meters tall and placed inside the a chamber. The lower part of the linga remains in water which is sourced from Tungabhadra river through a small canal. A close look on this linga can also reveal three eyes of Siva carved on it. Probably this shrine is a symbolic way to portray Lord Siva saving the earth by taking the direct impact of Heavenly Ganga on his hair instead of falling directly on earth. Amazing structure…

"Badava" translates to "poor," and "Linga" represents Shiva. Legend has it that this temple was constructed by a destitute woman, hence the name. It stands as a striking structure and houses one of the largest Shiva Lingas globally. Remarkably, at the linga's base, there is a pedestal partially submerged in water due to an underlying water canal. Additionally, the linga is open from above. The preservation of this structure is impressive, with exceptionally smooth curves that attest to its creation in a bygone era. It is beside Laxmi- Narsimha

Incredible Hampi...!!! This ancient monolithic stone structure of Shiva Linga symbolizes Lord Shiva and is located next to Shree Ugra Narasimha temple. The name Badava means poor and Linga is a representation of Shiva. It says that this temple was built by a poor woman. Hence the name is Badava Linga. It is beautiful and one of the biggest Shiva linga you will see anywhere in the world. At the base of the linga there is a pedestal which is submerged in water as there is a water canal below it. Also the linga is open from above. It is very well preserved and the curves in this linga are so smooth, it's made so long ago. Daily Pooja worship is done here in the morning. This is another beautiful place where you can visit both Ugra Narshimha and Badavilinga Shivling in the same campus beside each other. Linga is housed inside a chamber with an opening in the front which is always filled with water as water chamber is suppose to pass through it. A close look on this icon can reveal three eyes (depicting the three eyes of Shiva) carved on it. Legend has it that this was commissioned by a peasant woman and hence the name (Badva means poor in local tongue). The entry is free .

This huge monolithic linga is situated in the same premises as ugra narasimha. The main attraction of the linga is its size and the fact that it stands in the middle of water. The water is always present and interestingly the water is supplied from tungabhadra. Previously it was open to everyone but now it is gated.

This is the largest Linga image in Hampi. Located next to the Lakshmi Narasimha statue the Linga is housed inside a chamber with an opening in the front. A close look on this icon can reveal three eyes (depicting the three eyes of Shiva) carved on it. Legend has it that this was commissioned by a peasant woman and hence the name (Badva means poor in local tongue). The sanctum in which the Linga is installed is always filled with water as a water channel is made to flow through it. According to Hindu mythology the River Ganga (Ganges) was brought from heaven to earth to quench the drought. But the river was so forceful that it could split the earth into two pieces if allowed to fall on earth. Lord Shiva consented to take the impact by allowing the torrent of Ganga to fall on his matted hair. Thus helping to release a smooth flowing river on to earth from his hair. As an iconic representation of this, in Siva temples you can spot a dripping pot hanged over the Linga.

Badava Linga is situated in close proximity to Lakshmi Narasimha Temple. The Badava Linga is is permanently covered by water all the time. The linga carved with three eyes represent the three eyes of Lord Shiva. It is advisable that who ever visits Hampi should visit this temple and have the blessings of lord Shiva. According to local people , the linga was constructed and carved by poor when his wish was fulfilled . In kannada Badava means poor.

What to say? This place was almost breathtaking. To stand in the presence of Mahadev ? A little history goes like this. The idol was built through the efforts of a poor woman thus name badava (meaning poor in Kannada). This lower portion of idiol remains under water all round the year which is another unique thing about this temple. Some time back I saw the picture of an old priest who would carry Tungabhadra water in spite of being over 100 year old to wash the deity. Unfortunately couldn't meet him.

It is a functioning temple. Badavilinga Temple is a wonderful temple in Hampi dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Hindu deity Shiva is worshipped in the form of a Linga in this temple. The Badavilinga Temple has the largest monolithic Shiva Linga in Hampi. The Shiva Linga has a three eye mark drawn on it in line carving. The three eye mark depicts the three eyes of Lord Shiva. The beautiful Linga is made of black stone. It has a height of 3 meters. Design of the stone chamber is that it has no ceiling. During the day time, sunlight enters through the opening in the ceiling and floods the Shiva Linga with light.

Religious place with peace all around . Heavily crowded with tourists on all days no matter what. This place is bang next to the Ugranarsimha statue . This big stone linga is confined in an enclosed wall and always surrounded by water. It's not allowed to go near to the Linga only except for the priest. It might get bit dehydrated while walking along the area as very little vegetation is available.
