Is Cap's the best bar in Bellingham? No. Is it the biggest or most inviting? Definitely not. But it is for sure the coolest bar in Bellingham. Whether you come for the PBF'S or a PBR, this place will always be there to please your eyes. The atmosphere is absurd and the artwork is immaculate. One day majestic orangutans wearing fruit hats adorn the walls only to be replaced later by regal chimpanzees appraising a glass of fine wine. The bar itself is dominated by vintage beer paraphernalia. The red/black checkered floors and red ambient lighting feels like something out of a scene from a David Lynch project. A black bench stretches the length of the bar with small round tables dispersed every few feet. There is one major flaw with the bar. It can not accommodate the crowd prone to bar crawling on a Bellingham weekend. When the bench and bar are filled to CAPacity, this place is best to be avoided. But if you find yourself downtown during the week and looking for a drink, it would be a mistake to not go to Cap Hansen's Tavern

So, I came in through the door and showed my ID politely to the bartender and asked for my drink. He then asked me if the bouncer checked my ID, and to not get the bouncer in trouble I said I'm not sure yeah I think so. He then said you're probably too drunk if you can't remember. I finally said no, he did not check my ID. I then apologize profusely even though I was absolutely not in the wrong. I had literally been outside smoking a cigarette and had locked eyes with the bouncer multiple times. He just let me walk in not a word. Then when I finally bought my drink, he took the entire bill I gave him and did not give me any change. This is theft. What a terrible experience. Probably time to fire your door guy. Do not go here.

Worst bar I've been to in Bellingham. The servers have a god complex and absolutely no grace in their confrontation. I would recommend every other place that serves alcohol above this place. It is small, loud, and dingy. If I could give zero stars I would.

Bartenders are nice enough but the bouncers like the guy with exceptionally aggressive guy with a head tattoo and gauges can and will heckle you on the way in and out for the power trip. Definitely have never felt welcome in the slightest.

Horrible bartenders. Don't ever go here. If I could give 0 stars I would. The bartenders seem to make it their personal mission to police their patrons. One with an obvious power complex. There are too many great breweries around the area to mess with this horrible bar. Do yourself a favor and skip this place when visiting Bellingham. 0/10 would not recommend.

***PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO*** I have been in Cap Hansen multiple times. But this was shocking to me. Today, I went there, and there were two bartenders. One old white beard guy and one partial beard guy on each side. Let me call them white beard and partial beard. So I went there and ordered drinks. While i was drinking, i saw regular jameson and jameson black barrel. Personally, i never tried black barrel one, and i wanted to try it, so i called the white beard old guy to ask about it. But he hand signed me to wait, and th bar was busy, so i waited. Meanwhile, I was very thursty, so i drank water in my water bottle. Then, the old white beard guy complained about me drinking water from my own water bottle. I accepted complaints because some bars do not allow that. But i was mad that they did not have time to get my order, but I had a fat minute listing complain about me drinking about drinking water from my water bottle. So I asked that you dont have a second to get my drink order, which would give them money, but have a minute to complain about me drinking water. They talked about it to each other and ended up kicking me out of the bar. The old white beard guy even said that I was harassing him, then purposely ignored me. Then, the other bartender came to us and threatened us with giving me specifically 3 munute to leave the bar without listening to the story from my side when i was not even done with drink that i ordered. They just believed story that the old white beard bartender said a d kicked me out for no further discussion. I had a great experience going to this bar and quite enjoyed their drink, and I know those bartenders since i got drinks from them so many times, but with their service today, i would never go there again. Their personality truly revealed in busy time. Hope you all read this 🙏. Thank you. There are a lot better bars in bellingham that still care about customers even when they are busy

I think the bartender was drunk? My experience was way too weird. I went out with two friends and was the DD. I was first in line and asked if I could have a lemon water. My two friends asked for a PBF. The friend in back tries to pay and the bartender gets all weird asking if they're okay. My friend of course said yes but felt awkward because all they were trying to do was pay... then the bartender asks us if they should be cut off to which I responded that Im DD and everyone will be safe tonight. The bartender pours the two drinks, doesnt give me a water and tells me my friend is cut off and has me grab "my" drink and charged us.. but I didnt order one! My friend grabbed the drink because obviously I wasnt drinking and the bartender runs from behind the counter, grabs the drink and my friend violently and forces us out of the bar while yelling at us and saying we are banned. I did call the bartender an a.s.s for pouring the drink my friend ordered while kicking us out. Like what did you expect? Why did you even pour it if they were cut off? This was near the end of the night, the bar was mostly empty with no line behind us, we were quiet and not causing any scene. Why would you grab us so violently? Ive been coming here for over 6 years and now never will again. Ive never been afraid of a bartender before AND I WAS SOBER... (from what I remember this bartender is also the owner) the guy was just looking for a fight it seems. Im just glad none of us got hurt being forced out. Orion is the better bar. My friend got their drop shot there after with no issues.

You know how these folks have a nuanced sense of humour? It’s true except for the nephew of that blonde/ginger beer can giver out guy. What a wad. I love him…

Such a fun and cozy space, loving the changes since Aaron took over! Top notch service, fun decor, and a great vibe; there's a reason Cap's remains a popular locals' favorite!

Classic hole in the wall joint. A bit of Bellingham history. Grab a PBF and bask in the low light glow of the Schlitz lamps.

B'ham's classiest dive. The PBF came with a sticker that made me feel pride in myself like no scout badge ever could. Next time, I intend to ask the bear to be my dad.

The best bar in Bellingham if you want cheap drinks and good atmosphere. Drinks here are half price as other bars down the street and that’s not even happy hours. Also, can’t go wrong with an illuminated Danny DeVito portrait and free popcorn!! It definitely gets crowded on weekend evenings because it’s so cozy but if you can get a table it’s easy to spend a couple hours here.
