This is a neighborhood worth visiting in Medellín. This is definitely a must see to learn more about the complex history and culture of this town and the steps it has taken to become one of the most innovative cities in South America. It is truly an inspiring story to see the transformation of this neighborhood with booming businesses and the community involvement with local artists and performers. Magnificent views from the top, colorful houses and narrow streets. Expect to see large crowds of people

My suggestion is to go early, unless you love crowds and are there to party. A local said Mon-Wed is not as busy but if you go at 4pm on the other days, you'll get quite the crowd which makes it more difficult to get pics of the graffiti and...well, walk. Lots of street food and souvenirs but some cool looking bars too. We were there an hour and a half. That was plenty for us. We did not do a tour because it was a last minute decision to go. Beautiful views of the city!

I LOVE to travel and experience the culture in it's most raw form. Comuna 13 gives it to you and then some! It is a MUST when in Medellin. So much color, so much art, so much realness. Thank you to comuna 13 for welcoming tourists and allowing us to see a glimpse of how they live on a day to day basis 🙏

Beautifully colorful, vibrant and alive! It's a good amount of walking to get to the escalators but totally worth it. Tons of places to buy souvenirs, street food or even a tasty beverage. If you're close by, you should definitely consider making the trip.

Great tour of a place that had a bad reputation, but has since then really cleaned things up. It’s wonderful to see so many people touring and enjoying street art. Recommended for everyone.

We met the best guide name Carolina.. she was super informative and very sweet. She took us to this authentic place to eat. We went to a little museum to learn about what happened to them years ago. We spent about 4 hours with her.

It's awesome to walk around this neighbourhood! We were there as part of a free walking tour from 'Guruwalks'. Our local guide was very knowledgeable and passionate to tell us all about his home and it's past and present. There's lot of incredible (street) art here. We took the graffiti tour for a reason and were happy about that choice afterwards. It's definitely the way to go! Enjoy you're time in Comuna Trece!

Great experience, there was an event going on when I visited so it was packed. It was cool to see the chaos and experience the culture of this remedied place. The people were all friendly, the food was great, and the drinks were awesome. I recommend walking around the neighborhoods entirely to get the whole experience. I did not do a tour as I like to travel to the beat of my own drum.

What a fun place to visit. It is very lively. The history is incredibly to learn how this neighborhood has turned itself around in the past twenty years. I recommend a tour in the evening. Lots of music, art, and food.

Beautiful place they have an impressive history. Please do not accept any guide who's offering tours in the entry. Go through the stairs and you'll find the official guides. The tour is free and you can tip the guide whatever you want there's no rate. I suggest to buy souvenirs on the locals that are next to the basketball court. Those are the cheapest ones and the ones that are at the very top. Go through the electric stairs up, up, up. Delicious food, excellent coffee and music everywhere. Please do not forget that people still live in the neighborhood and there's motorcycles crossing all the time. Be aware of your surroundings.

Definitely a recommended place to go. Interesting, shocking, cultural, urbanistic and safe. Is a place where you can go on your own, but I would go with a local guide. There lots of companies, not expensive at all, you get to know first hand from the history of the place and you help the local community. This was one the most conflicting areas of the country up to 12 years ago. And is an example to follow of how a damaged area and society and can change positively a 100 %.

(Translated by Google) It is important not to do the tour alone, although it is not dangerous, you may get lost or not enjoy the tour properly. You can get to the San Javier metro and ask for the guides, they are generally people who also live in the commune and they will tell you the story much better than a contracted company, and much cheaper. Prices can vary between 10 and 30 thousand pesos on average, the tour lasts approximately 2 and a half hours, although it can be done in less traveling less distance, and also more if you want to see everything in full. It is nice, the history is very interesting, there are beautiful places for photos, a lot of urban art, it is not dangerous or violent, on the contrary, it is a place full of art and talent. There are many delicious things to eat, and to buy. It is worth doing if you are going to pass through Medellin!

(Translated by Google) An emblematic place of the city of Medellín, transformation of the community in favor of tourism, a lot of culture, history and art, you have to visit it, highly recommended ice cream. You can go with a guide or without a guide, but it is better to do it with a guide and support the community, the tour per person could be between $ 25,000 and $ 35,000. Great views across the city, I guess it’s better with a guide to give you the story. That said we were soaked with the rain, so take an umbrella if it “might” rain.

For me this place is fascinating. Upbeat with great energy. Lots of people ,very crowded but always peaceful and lots of fun. The graffiti is awesome and you can take a tour and learn the meaning of the art work you see. Plan on having a drink and some street food and spending the day. If you don't like crowds , Stay Home !! Great street performers ,too. Always safe!!

Comuna 13 is definitely worth a visit when in Medellín. The history of this neighborhood is quite sad but it appears that the invasion by the government in 2002 has really turned this place around and created a mini local economy for those still residing there. It's recommended to take a tour here as you'll get to learn a lot more information and behind the scenes stories about the neighborhood and learn more about how things operate these days. What was once the most dangerous place in the world is now the most visited destination in Medellín. One tip that you must follow is to avoid this place on the weekends as there are thousands and thousands of people coming and going from all directions and it can get overly crowded. Do yourself a favor and visit during the weekdays to avoid the chaos.

Unbelievable! I would live here! Beautiful art and an energetic street festival atmosphere. It's very moving and inspiring just knowing the little bit of history I know of the Comun 13 neighborhood. I fell in love with my tour guide Sebastian. He was so knowledgeable and patient with the group who started away. I would do this again in a heartbeat 💓.

Excellent area full of vendors, music, shops, art, picturesque views, shopping, food, drinks, and gorgeous weather. It is a bit of a journey from the city center. The arrival area can become packed during peak tourism periods. Bring cash and be prepared to carry your souvenirs home. Also ensure you wear comfortable walking shoes as the area has steep inclines, some narrow passages, and stairs. Definitely recommend a trip to see this beautiful neighborhood. No tour guide is required.

We did the Comuna 13 Guruwalk with Christian the “Teacher” and it was fabulous, actually in my mind its a must do. Hopefully you get a guide like we had as he was outstanding. Born and raised in Comuna 13 he passed on his first hand knowledge of life in Comuna 13 before its transformation and through it to today. A 5 star tour by a 5 star guide. Loved it!!!!

I did the walking tour with Zippy. Our guide, Laura, was amazing. I highly recommend a walking tour as it ends up the hill in Comuna 13 where you can walk around after learning about the area. Comuna 13 felt lively with music, shops, and other entertainment. It is a must visit!

Went with a group of first timers and showed them this place, they loved it. Highly recommend setting aside about 3 to 4 hours for this place. Take an Uber there and ride the escalators all the way to the top. Find yourself the highest bar, enjoy a beer and just take it all in. Comuna 13 will humble you and know that your business is going towards a great community. There will be plenty of kids looking for handouts and if you're lucky you may catch a dance show during the pandemic. The bars and restaurants shut down by 7 during this time but recommend to be in and out while it's still daylight. If you go solo just a make sure to keep your head on a swivel. It feels sketch but it's just a barrio that's really tourist centric but never count out any bad apples. Cash is the way to go here as internet is limited on this western Medellín fringe.

Amazing free tour by a young community member who provides an informed, educational, personal and uplifting 3hr tour of the Communa 13 neighborhood that is now a model for socially responsible revitalization - not gentrification - that enables residents to stay and thrive in their community, and grow fresh, modern, small businesses that are pure reflections of their community. It's a testament to resiliency and recovery after a dark, painful and unjust history. Super cool vibe, edgy and purposeful, beautiful graffiti, and vibrant, young, friendly people. With some of the best views of Medellin in the city, you'll get amazing, colorful photos. Tour is free but above and beyond any high-priced city tour anywhere in the world. Tip well.

A great way to see the vibrant colors of Comuna 13, but don’t expect it to be “local”. This area caters heavily to tourists and as such, you won’t find many local shops without wandering off the beaten path. Once you reach the top of the escaleras eléctricas, walk the path and talk to locals (especially the abuelitas). They are very kind and are usually willing to share their neighborhood with you.

Highly recommended. I took the escalators and walkways with a fellow traveler (no tour guide) because we had just finished a city-center tour and were guided-out for the day. It was a great experience: beautiful street art, felt safe, and had beautiful views of the valley. We probably would have gotten a lot more context and appreciation of the history out of the experience with a tour guide, but still good to visit either way. The escalators are great for tourists and also used by community members. We saw construction workers carrying small loads of bricks up the escalators on their shoulders since there aren't any roads by that point. Only sidewalks and stairs. Don't forget sunscreen and if doing it without a guide know the public buses from the metro are easy and inexpensive (bring small bills/coins). Otherwise it's about a mile walk/cab from the metro to the base of the escalators.

Take a free walking tour, or just wander there yourself. There is a lot of Street art to gape at, with interesting history and architecture. Of course there is usually some Street food vendors, and Street performers. It's worth going on your visit here, and can be accomplished in under two hours if you're on a time crunch.

  • 4/5 Kaleb L. 5 years ago on Google
We visited Comuna13 as part of the paid walking tour, which was great, but not amazing. (We were spoiled by the Real City walking tour) but this tour really has to be done to really understand not only the complicated past of Medellin and Comuna 13, but also to appreciate the resilience of the neighborhood and the people who call it home. I would definitely recommend coming on a tour as I don't think you'd get the same thing just going alone and without commentary.

A must do for those are looking to find more about the dark past of Medellín and especially this commune and the change it went through the last year's. It's a place where sadness, happiness, hope and the opportunity for a better future comes all together. Medellín is one of my favorite cities in South America especially because of it's changes from dark to bright. Love you Medellín, I'll be back for sure. ❤️

Alright so here is the deal. Comuna 13 (District 13) has a rough and gruesome history and is known by almost anyone who has heard of it for being a really dangerous neighborhood. This is probably true for the deeper residential parts of the district but, the part of comuna 13 that has these escalators and most of the really cool graffiti is 100% safe. Stick with your guide, follow the groups, don't do anything stupid and you'll be fine. There are government officials at the foot of every set of stairs, dozens of tour guides during peak hours, and the escalators make the trip up and down real easy. The real safety though honestly comes from the community itself. If a kid tried to run off with your camera or purse for example, they'd be stopped by a local before you even have a chance to yell for police to help because they truly appreciate what tourism is bringing to their community. That being said, where the graffiti stops, so should your journey. You'll usually see a few locals directing you to turn around or go down a certain "approved" path but if in doubt, turn around. The best way to see this area is to find a tour guide locally (check with your hotel) or through a service like Viator and have them pick you up from and leave you at your hotel because parking is complicated for even motorcycles. Try to find a tour that doesn't just take you there but one where the tour guide can speak to some of the art. Local kids will offer to dance for you. You can politely decline or let them do their thing. If you do let them show you what they've been working on though, give them some change.

It is in this context that the installation of the famous ELECTRIC STAIRS appears as a central fact, which came to catalyze a multitude of local ventures around gastronomic and cultural tourism. Place interesting but so tourists oriented that it's hard to find something authentic there, and if you want to sind authentic things and real things of communa you need to move around the corners and stairs, but I'm not reAlly sure that it's as safe as guide says, English speaking guide - we w bargained to 100k COP for 4 persons, and don't think that this will be poetic story of whats happened there back then... Probably It'll be standard phrases repeated over and over again, so don't hesitate to ask questions and suggest directions to move to

Great place, a lot of art. Be ready to climb. As in most places in Colombia, you will have people asking for money, especially kids, and street vendors. Just say no tank you and you'll be fine, they are not pushy. Also I opted not to take a toot, really there isn't much there that needs a guide.

You definitely have to come here if in Medellín, with a guided tour (some free tours with tip and some paid tours) or without. Lots of history, food, arts, and culture. You'll get the emotion of knowing how a group of neighborhoods moved from a militarized territory to a vibrant alternative space to free your soul.

The escalators are a great way to go around Comuna 13 because of all of the hills. There is action there: music, dance, restaurants, street food, art, etc. The amount of tourists sadly take away from the charm, but it was still a great activity. We found vegan street food everywhere! We had a popsicle made of fruit juice, roasted potatoes, corn without butter and potato empanadas.

A MUST if you visit Medellin. Once a crime-filled area, now an area where art of all kinds is celebrated. Good eats, good music, lots of talent to be seen!!! Graffiti art is the feature...

I had a tour through the comuna and you can see many murals and people selling souvenirs. The people was friendly. At the top of the comuna you can have a great view of Medellín

Fascinating bird's eye view of the city with lots of vendors, a few pit-stop snackeries, a few stray dogs, a bungee ride, and entertaining dancers/street performers. People live here in the houses, so you'll get a genuine experience of the neighborhood and culture. Some residents post signs to use their bathroom/el baño for $1,000 COP. Not sure if there is a public restroom on site. Good experience.

Fantastic place to visit. We took the stairs on the way up for a nice workout and returned on the escalators. The journey up in the cable cars was a great experience. If you enjoy graffiti art this week be a great place to visit. Several places to eat as well.

Good experience. You can get a tour guide to explain history. We chose to just ride cable car and stop at each stop and walk. Great view, Great weather, great friendly people!

Very sad story of this neighborhood, but so happy to see how people have risen with art and dance. Beautiful grafiti, nice people, very safe for tourists now.

To get to this place you can take a train ride to San Javier train station in Medellin walk up the hill make a left to escalators and enjoy local arts and shopping. No guide needed unless you feel uncomfortable going by yourself. Train ride is roughly under $4.00 for 2 people.

A brilliant tour with an amazing guide (Christian) who speaks excellent English. We learned so much from our local guide who was born and raised in Communidad 13. We went with our 2 young kids and they enjoyed it very much. The interpretation of the graffiti murals is worth the tour alone. Book via WhatsApp, pay your guide after the tour.

Loved this experience. Lot of stairs but a story you will not forget, as is the view at the end of the climb. Big tip is to go round 400pm, so at the end you'll see the sun set on top of the mountain.

We did a free walking tour with „zippy tours“. We reserved a spot in the group in advance, which I recommend as the group was very big. Our tour guide was absolutely amazing. So friendly and welcoming. She lives in the Comuna 13 district and knows every bit of history by heart, which she explained in perfect English. Not only did she introduced us to the history and all the important place, she also invited the entire group to her house, where the tour finished after approximately 3 hours. We saw lots of street art, which represents different aspects of Comunas 13’s history and where brought to two guys from the district, who performed a freestyle rap, based on suggested words by the group members. The district itself is very crowed and touristic, but nonetheless I decently recommend seeing it.

Comuna 13 was once known as the most dangerous place in Colombia, but time changes and things have changed. With the power of local people, this place was transformed into one the most interesting places in Medellin. And we wanted to discover it in person. We booked this tour in the afternoon after the paragliding in San Felix. We arrived there using the metro. When we got off the metro, it was a bit overwhelming. Not sure which way to go to the tour office. We called the tour company and they made the first impression by coming to meet us at the metro station. The tour consists of a lot of walking up the stairs to the top of the community, some parts were easier as escalators were used. Our tour guide was fluent in English and knowledgeable. We explained all the details and history about the painting, places and people. The community was vibrant, colorful and full of energy. We had a great time enjoying the view of Medellin on the top of the community. The local homemade ice cream was provided as a part of the tour. A lot of choices of local fruit flavors which will be difficult to choose. But trust me, all of them were good. We really enjoyed this tour and would recommend anyone who visited Medellin to come here. It will be one of the most memorable experiences Medellin has to offer.

Very interesting visit to communa 13 in Medellin. We saw the graffiti some of which tells the story of when drug Lordsand militias fought in this area which was a major gateway for narcotics trafficing. This area is now a major tourist attraction, where the city of Medellin has added cable cars and escalators to make the area more accessible.

If you are in medellin this is a must to attend has a long story of violence, this comunity which was overtaken finaly by the government many years ago now is a tourist attraction that you must go and visit which now is very safe ask the guides to walk you around and tell you the wholy story of "comuna 13"

Beautiful tour. Better with a guide vs self tour. Learn about the history of comuna13 and how it developed over the years from violence to art

It's a great experience and has a lot of things to do in the comuna, you can see the street dance performance, rap improvisation, beautiful wall paint, etc... You can pay for a tour guide or just walk and know everything on your own. I recommend paying the tour cause it is not that expensive and you can learn a lot of things about Medellín. Negative points: The motorcycles are very close to you and the amount of people, sometimes it is difficult to walk.

We didn't want to visit this place at the beginning because we thought it would be not safe... But this district turned out to be even more safe than El Poblado 😅 As soon as we arrived a local guide proposed us to have a tour ..for a gringo price (80 mil per person), but we are smart ukrainians and we checked tours online before — they charged 45mil per person and it was much more suitable price, so at the end my boyfriend agreed with the guide for 50 mil per person. The guy spoke English and he worked out all the money! I really recommend to take a guide because you may know more interesting stories, details and places. And we now also know CHIMBA 😎😜 Really nice place to go, but a bit overcrowded

We spent a few hours here wandering around the streets. There were 6 escalators taking us up the hill which made it very convenient. Lots of graffiti and bars in the area.

Beautiful culture represented in artwork to express the rich history of the area. Plus so many other cultural gems found throughout the area, including break dancing, music, and food.

Comuna 13 is a tour that you do in a historical neighbourhood of the city. The place gives a taste of the city, you will see gorgeous graffiti and enjoy an astonishing view of the city while having a crafted beer.

Historical this place is rich, very sad why it became famous, but they took that and expressed artistically and there's so much here. The food around is good and at very good prices. A lot of stores around as you walk down, their prices are very good and these are very good if you're looking for a gift.

Really interesting area, historically and culturally. It's definitely recommended to do a tour here and have a guide to show you around and teach you about the history. There is lots of cool graffiti and street art. The views of the city from the top of Comuna 13 are amazing.

It's a great urban experience to go out there and discover the ways of local people when it comes to music and welcoming December. I recommend to go to Son Batá house, in El Salado neighborhood. The drums and energy of the black people is 😍 amazing!!

I was on a guided tour which I recommend if you want to understand the history and learn the significance of the murals. We had a beer stop, a coffee stop and visited an art installation. Take tip money for the street performers.

Wonderful tour by train, cable car, bus, escalators. Interesting history told by the guide, Santiago, who was so awesome. Make sure your energy is up and you're wearing comfortable sneakers. Lots and lots of walking up hill and down. But overall a not to be missed tour.

👍👍 When I was there at the University of Antioquia for the first time I went to this museum, I was surprised that it was so lonely, the truth is that it has very valuable anthropological, social and biological historical pieces, it is a pleasant space to which I hope to return.
