You can spend hours in this small building reading everything and going through all the details. The gift shop had the neatest gifts as well! Art work was beautiful as well.

One of the few museums open during my visit and I was pleasantly surprised. Didn’t realize how huge this place is! It’s architecturally beautifully with 4 floors of exploring. It’s very vintage and old school - great for photos AND learning. I’m not into museums really but I really enjoyed this multi-level diverse museum. It has a lot of great info that you wouldn’t normally even think of. The last level was a nice surprise too with abstract-y art. The front gift shop was very relaxed and their prices were reasonable. We got our tickets on Groupon for cheaper before heading in though.

I've been here three previous visits when was very happy with bringing someone who had been there before. Their website is very clear that there have been closing for setup for a party for Halloween. What it doesn't disclose is that several rooms are typically were available with displays now we're closed because of the party other rooms that were open add less exhibits. One room had a cough and haphazardly shoved in so you basically couldn't walk into the room another room that look like it was an old drugstore I think that stuff placed in the front of it so you couldn't walk in at all. I did call up the museum after the fact and expressed my opinion that I paid a hundred percent admission fee and received about 50 to 75% and what typically is available that wasn't correct. The person I spoke to agree with pass it up the chain. That really helps me a lot I said and ended. So I would make a phone call before you go make sure that you're going to get 100% of what you're paying for and not less.

Loved this museum! It's not interactive, lots of reading, but so interesting with very neat artifacts and artwork and it's housed in a very cool historic mansion. My 18 year old daughter and I had a great time. Probably not a great choice for younger kids. If you're a science or medicine nerd, it's awesome!

One of the more lesser known museums, but I had the wonderful opportunity to explore this gem during Open House Chicago! The architecture inside and outside the building is beautiful and I feel like it’s very easy to overlook this building as an apartment complex. There are about four floors filled with medical devices and illustrations from history and you can learn a lot here! It was a lot bigger than I had imagined, but the gift shop is small. So many physical displays here and they have an apothecary tucked away on the ground floor! I have it pictured below with the model of the guy (which was kind of creepy tbh, but cool nonetheless). I’m so glad this museum gets to call Chicago home :)

This was an interesting museum. The admission is $25 and the place is kind of small. However, you can look at some antiquated surgical tools and artwork. Healthcare workers will probably find this much more intriguing than the general public, general public will most likely spend an hour or less here. Very informative on the history.

This was sooo cool. Beautiful building and interesting exhibits. On the smaller side with a lot of reading, but if you like vintage architecture and macabre medical history this museum is worth a visit. Even the Gift shop was awesome!

Interesting museum but do call ahead to find out if the exhibits will be fully open as they had covered up many artifacts because of a special Halloween event that evening which they were hosting but was not listed on their website.

We attended the Halloween Sorriee on Saturday night and had a fantastic time. The event was throughout the whole building.

Very educational place. There are alot of topics that are covered that are very interesting and gave me a great understanding of how far we have come as a society in refference to modern medicine. The areas that are primarily covered in the museum are Europe, America, and Asia. In spite of the Egyptians being pretty famous for surgeries such as dental work, there's not really a lot of information provided on behalf of Egyptians. But I understand to a certain degree. Because the museum is very artifact display driven. All in all, it was a very interesting place to visit. It's 4 floors of material by the way.

One of the lesser known Chicagoan museums that everyone should know about. Museums are supposed to get people talking about the exhibit and that’s what exactly happened. My friend and I had a ten minute conversation about the healthiest countries. Also, for the ghost hunters on google, try the basement. Another goer was super excited to show me her photo which looked like a hand reaching out to her.

We attended the Halloween Suaree and had so much fun. Buy the gold pass, it's worth it. You get to have 6 free drinks and chocolate. There are clues in each room and a fun quiz if you want to try. Get an uber or someone to drop you off. No parking. The ghouls n spirits are amazing. The crowd was fun too. A must try.

Top 5 places to visit in Chicago. I can't believe how quiet and impressive this museum is. So much history and information available! The gift shop has some super cute stuff too but don't miss the bone crusher that was used to set limbs straight, it's in a display on the stairs and it's worth pondering!

One of the best smaller museums in the city. Looks commonplace from the outside but is absolutely jam-packed with historic medical knowledge and tools, as well as art and curiosities. Will take 45-60 minutes if you don't just browse and really take a good look at everything.

A really nice museum to visit!! Lots of interesting information to take in. They don't have public parking, so you'll have to find a garage or another option nearby. The walk to the museum is right along the water. Highly recommend!

I came here for a story telling event. My friends and I were able to walk through the museum a bit. It's a bit creepy, but so interesting. The old architecture is gorgeous. I'd definitely go back and take in more of the exhibits.

I was there for the lecture from Kathleen Gallo. I cannot explain how intricately amazing her work is. It is really awe inspiring. Her lecture was captivating and extremely interesting. This young woman is someone to follow. She has a great bright future ahead of her. She has accomplished so much already.

Groupon had discount tickets, otherwise it would be a bit expensive for a small museum. A lot of artistic presentation of surgery history but there is relatively less display about modern surgery except for surgical instruments. Not worth the full price ticket.

I am a healthcare worker and was curious to visit this place. Peculiar place with special vibes. Gave me that inexpressible feeling of time travel back to the tough but brilliant past of medical science. Spent there slightly more than one hour to see the main exhibition. Good way to finish weekend Chicago trip.

Niche museum. Interesting for those who are into medical history. The museum is mostly a collection from one man: Dr. Max Thorek. He commissioned multiple art works. It also housed art works by Gallo. A few exhibits on Taiwan and Japan surgical history. Fairly compact. Easy to get to (CTA bus 151). Friendly staff.

This was a really fun museum. The treppanated skulls and wacky medical gadgets were my favorites. It’s not very large and is probably a 90 minute visit at most.

🩺🥼4 floors of historical surgical exhibits on display in a warm setting with windows overlooking the lake. For people in the field of medicine and surgery and others alike, this museum is an opportunity to immerse in the history. It fairly well maintained and exhibits are engaging. General admission is $17 for adults but you can get discount coupons on Groupon.

Underrated little gem with lots of interesting artifacts and some unexpectedly neat art. We liked the room with all of the different kinds of glasses and optical history best! FYI: 2 for 1 admission with WBEZ membership. A should-do for locals, but wouldn’t make my top 10 if I were visiting for a weekend. Takes about 1 to 2 hours, depending on how much you like to read plaques.

Interesting museum. Not particularly large in size but there's plenty to see if you check out the smaller exhibits. I would guess the average person would spend about an hour here.

I really wanted to love this place, but it is not a very well done museum. There is no clear flow. In some places, signs have fallen off or there is no lighting. Some areas have a whole case of instruments with just a printed list of the items. There are no corresponding numbers inside the case so it’s hard to figure out what the items are. The only thing that saved us is that we both work in medicine. Without our background knowledge, we would have been clueless. And not only are the items not labeled, there are no explanations of how old they are or what they were used for. Just a list. There are some really great items here and the topic is fascinating but we left disappointed.

Amazing place! Filled to the brim with surgical gear, and things the patients used, famous statues of people who helped discover the scientific surgery things. Old books and a old replica of a pharmacy.

Interesting museum with 4 floors of medically related artifacts and art. The building is a converted mansion with exquisite details. Alas, there is no elevator available for visiting the upper floors.

This museum is definitely unrated. You will learn all kinds of different things. And it's a big museum with 4 floors of Information. Only thing is it's hot. The building is old so air conditioner is limited. I would suggest going on a cool day and there is no parking garbage for this museum. Park on north and wells and walk over. But great place to go, small gift shop as well.

I visited shortly after becoming a surgical technologist, so learning more about the history of surgery was specially fascinating. It was a nice museum overall, 10/10 I would go again :-)

Awesome museum to check out! There are four floors to wander about and each room is more interesting than the last! There is an elevator in the building, but it is an antique and can only be run by staff members. They do a good job of cooling the building in the summer despite them only having fans and window units. Great gift shop!

A favorite museum of mine, there's so much to see and learn about that I'm glad I'm a local and can go as much as I want. Because it's a smaller museum, I feel even better supporting it with reasonable ticket prices and really clever items at the gift shop every time I go. Highly recommend to creepy folks! Get yourself some tickets to the candlelight tour when they pop up, it's a great introduction before you come back later to see everything in the day.

We were in Chicago for the weekend and this gem ended up being one of our favorite destinations. The building itself is gorgeous to be in and the exhibits were so fascinating! I loved the large scale paintings throughout and really enjoyed traveling through time to explore different eras and cultures of medicine. I've recommended it to a lot of folks. If you're in Chicago, you should definitely stop here!

I'm a big medical history buff. I love this museum. We take so much for granted today. Learn about some of the pioneers of medicine who helped make our long healthy lives possible.

Very run down and old. This place is depressing and smells ancient. The artifacts don't make up for it but has some cool info.

I've lived in Chicago my whole life and never knew this gem was here. It ain't no MSI, but if you are at all interested in medicine or scientific advancements or history, this place is a must-see. Between the location, historical building, its history, the exhibits, and the omg-hilarious-yes-i-must-have-this-(insert organ)-plushie gift shop, this place is a great way to spend 2 hours on a Sunday.

Nice place but "price"/"what you expect from a museum" was high!

  • 5/5 Neil H. 2 years ago on Google
What a delight! I love smaller and more eclectic museums, and this one has a great combination of artifacts and oddities. The staff is friendly and the building is gorgeous. It's not for the faint of heart, but if you're a weirdo like me this is rad.

A lot of really interesting stories to be found here, and delightful things to see. Some of the standouts for me are the xray section and seeing a kidney stone the size of an orange. I think some of the displays could use a little help in making sure items have a number on them or near them so it's easier to immediately identify them. While not necessary, I think having some visual aids of how some of the old tools would be used would be fascinating and take the museum to the next level.

My friend (a nurse) came from out-of-state to visit this museum. We planned a whole day around it, even arranging childcare so that we could go. We drove in Chicago traffic over an hour to get there, and then drove around the neighborhood to find a parking spot. This is not a convenient place to get to, even in the best of times. When we arrived at 1:30pm, we were told they closed at 12:00pm that day for an event. This was mentioned no where on their website, socials, anywhere. Their posted hours on every single platform said they were open until 5:30pm that day. It’s hard to believe a world-class museum would forgot to inform the public that they’re closing 5 hours early, especially with the considerable effort most visitors would need to take to get there.
