Highly recommend visiting!! The VR exhibit of the march on Washington gave me chills...absolutely incredible. Loved the African tribal masks exhibit on the lower level with a thatch roof and hut. The permanent exhibit was incredibly educational and pertinent, tracing Black history in the US from the Atlantic slave trade to Jim Crow to the civil rights movement and today. Loved the museum and will be back

Our family loves stopping to explore history visits and immediately made a decision to add this to the top of the list. Glad we did. We are museum members at our home museum which have reciprocal privileges in various states that you can use your membership on. This was one of them. Our admission was free. Parking on the side of the building was also free. Friendly customer service here well. We had a great educational time.

A must see when you're in Chicago. So much historical significance to the city and country. From modern art, civil rights to enslavement. A much needed history lesson. There is an interactive tour of Harold Washington, inspirational quotes and African American history. Can't wait to go back.

Phenomenal, I took my 12 year old and 9 year old daughters to experience a small portion of history and they were intrigued. We were able to experience the interactive chat of Joyce Ladder. We will go back to experience interactive march before august.

Loved it! The virtual March on Washington experience was amazing and emotional. There is a great deal of knowledge to take in on both floors so make sure you have time to see it all.

This was my second visit to the DuSable Museum and my wife’s first visit. This visit was better than the first. MARGARET T. BURROUGHS, 1960-1980 exhibit is what you experience right from the start and it doesn’t disappoint. The virtual room / exhibit with Mayor Harold Washington was a step back in the past with futuristic technology, don’t miss this. One of our favorites was the FREEDOM, RESISTANCE, AND THE JOURNEY TOWARD EQUALITY exhibit. Very surreal! It speaks to the heart of what’s currently taking place in this world and it’s divisiveness between races. We miss the most important exhibit running, “The March”. We will return soon, but highly recommended you visit when visiting Chicago.

I haven't visited in a very long time and I'll say what I said the last time I visited. The potential that they have here is unreal. I've always enjoyed the exhibits on display and today was no different. I was very impressed with the Troubled Waters and the Freedom, Resistance, and Journey toward equality exhibits. The Kara Walker exhibit was different and there were two images that were really thought provoking to me. Something I highly recommend seeing. This is such a great place to visit, and I'm going to do more to support it because the African-American history in Chicago alone is rich in itself.

Excellent museum with beautiful artifacts and a rich sense of history. I would recommend it to anyone to visit and learn something new or take in what a group of people had to go through and come out Victorious on many different levels of life may god continue to bless the Aboriginal people forever.

The museum is a small local labor of love. There were 5 discrete exhibits the day I visited. As it was my first visit to Chicago, I loved the Chicago-specific exhibits as they helped me feel more understanding for the city and the people of Chicago. History has a powerful ability to help us situate ourselves in the present. That context is so vital. We found the staff very helpful in situating us in the museum; the attendent at the front desk gave us a wonderful overview of the museum's offerings. These included an interesting mix of art, artifacts, and mixed media reinactment. The museum is experimenting with different aspects of technology to bring history to life for it's visitors. Some things work better than others but the efforts in all cases demonstrate the museum's dedication to capturing the imagination and attention of those who walk through the doors. It was a worthy stop in my Chicago tour.

Nice museum, I expected a little more, I guess since Chicago is the #1 city in the nation and #2 in the World. Michelle Obama is from here and President Obama lived here. There are not mentioned in this museum. It’s nice however I’ve been to the Smithsonian’s Black History Museum in DC so I’ve seen it all. Its 2023 they needs to Update their exhibit with Mayor Lori Lightfoot and other Famous People like the Obama’s. The Light show was Nice The March was nice Time for a update and more Art. The Rabbit outside are cute. Grass outside needs to be cut and the Duck Poop needs to be cleaned off the front stairs. Over all 5 stars

Some good exhibits but way too small. Try the "time March" exhibit... easily the best part of the museum. The "un(re)solved exhibit is also amazing but it's across the street so make sure you get a bracelet

This is an amazing experience. I took the opportunity to explore with the wife some of the great things our ancestors did. If you're ever in the area, visit this site for some beautiful knowledge.

First time in Chicago and I've never heard of this museum. It's small but well put together. It has very in-depth history of black soldiers and history of Chicago doing the roits of the 1919 Red Summer.

The "March" experience was wonderful. Enjoyed the history of Chicago's 1st Black Mayor; the letters and display of the service men and women. Displays of the artifacts of the struggle to build a better "America" on the backs of slavery were a grave reminder that freedom will forever have a cost that can not be repaid! The investment and resources to fund this museum are evidently lacking, and that's very sad. Definitely visit and donate!

Hidden gem on the south side of Chicago, was greeted by a friendly gentlemen asking where we were from. My wife and I live in Chicago, but our friend was visiting from Turkey. He gave a quick intro and they made us feel very welcome. Be sure to do the MLK March VR experience. The art and sculptures were very inspiring and be sure to walk across the street to see another exhibit that was very cool. Had unique fashion and artistic balloons.

Having not been to the DuSable Black History Museum & Education Center in over 3 decades I decided to visit. I was greeted by Keisha and Tiara who we had the brightest smiles and encouraged me to visit again. This is a 💎 of gems 💎 a must visit for locals and those near and far.

A high priority destination on my first trip to Chicago! Loved every minute I was there. Everyone was so nice! Informative exhibits. The March On virtual reality exhibit left me speechless! I will be visiting again. 🖤

The museum was clean, organized and informative. Exhibits ranged from objects displayed to paintings to video presentations to robotic image of the late mayor Harold Washington. The themes varied from wars to slavery to civil rights and politicians participation. I would hope in the future exhibits will emphasize on the creation and inventions produced by Black Americans in both the 20th and 21st centuries. We need to be reminded of items we take for granted and along with the creativity and intellect it took to develop. All should recognize the worth of Black American inventors.

An incredible museum that all junior school pupils of all races should visit. Wonderful virtual reality experience of MLK's 'Dream' speech. Be prepared to be moved. It's no more than 30 mins from the Art Institute by public transport.

Without giving any credit to the reality show I was watching yesterday, one cast member just kept going on and on about how there are "no black museums" and it was wearing on my patience. The DuSable Black History Museum has been in my life MY WHOLE LIFE, from countless elementary school trips to pit stops on my way to the Hyde Park Jazz Fest and beyond. This even became a date night spot for me at one point, although I forget what the exhibit was at the time. I just remember him insisting we go here. I love that there are other black history museums popping up and being built in notable numbers over the past few years, but this one seems to be underrated (or lesser known) if you're not a Chicago native. I always thought it was super popular until I noticed it was not mentioned enough when newer museums are promoted. So I'll give it its roses on my own! They always have some new event or exhibit. If/when I'm on the South Side, I try to poke my head in to support. I always end up in the bookstore buying something I absolutely don't need. (How many bookmarks can one person have?) But I like it in there too.

This was a very appreciated visit. But I can't help but to feel like something was missing like expected more. I appreciate what is there and will take that history with me.

Decided to visit this museum upon recommendation from a local and I'm so very glad that we did. There were the staples that are found in nearly every museum but also some very cool and interactive exhibits plus items on loan on display during our visit. The photo is of a portion of a piece titled 'Deeply Rooted' by Fred Hayden (no spoilers here, you have to see it for yourself). Brilliant. I regret that I have forgotten the name, but there is an exhibit that is modeled in the fashion of a hut where visitors can walk through and see varying tribal ceremonial masks and headdress. The workmanship that is shown is rather remarkable. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will return when we are in Chicago to see any new exhibits.

Highly recommend visiting this museum! They’ve done a beautiful job curating the museum, and I learned a lot about the rich Chicago history. If you have time while you’re visiting, or if you’re a Chicago native, stopping here is well worth it!

The DuSable Museum is a place of cultural history. For those of us who have had the pleasure of growing up Black in Chicago, you can flashback to school trips, rallies, graduations, and political forums for the community. The DuSable is an integral part of the Chicago Black experience.

Very nice layout of the campus. Next time a better choice or music. The lyrics of the hip hop artist I think there's a little much for children being present

Went with a non print group so we may have gotten a discount. But I LOVED learning about all the history. There's a VR learning experience that some of my group was able to experience which definitely seems to be worth the trip

I visited this African American museum a few weeks ago when I was in Chicago traveling through. It was very easy to navigate to with the use of a GPS device or Google maps. There was no parking available in their private parking lot, but I was able to find nearby street parking. The grounds didn't appear to being maintained because the grass was very high. Upon entering I noticed that the staff was enforcing the COVID-19 pandemic precautions, and required all visitors to social distance and to wear a face mask. As I took my time observing the 2 floors of artifacts they had, I found everything to very interesting and educational. I could definitely see it being useful for the local community and as well as visitors who desire to know more about Chicago history. I would highly recommend this museum to anyone who enjoys history or just wants a couple of relaxing time.

Great museum! All the staff in and around the building were very nice people. The one part that stood out was the virtual reality experience. That part was surreal and one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.

It was nice. They have something like a Fair there some Sunday afternoons. Someone I know was celebrating their birthday. It's a steppers set, and some vendors set up their booths there. Not many just a few.

Solid local museum about Chicago's African-Americans and their impact on the city and country. Good Sunday afternoon outing. It's speaker events and MLKZ Day events are worthwhile.

Visited for the first time mid March after driving from Louisville, KY. It was an incredible museum that made me emotional at some points. The staff was really friendly and helpful and there happened to be a new exhibit opening that day. I definitely plan to go back (:

A heartfelt thank you to the DuSable Museum for all you do for the Chicago community and the national conversation about Black history in February and all year long! It is an honor to work with your team and we are grateful for the recent event allowing Attorneys Antonio Romanucci and Ben Crump to share details of their civil rights work with the DuSable audience.
