Dhamekh stupa is said to mark the place where the Buddha gave the first serman to his first five disciples. Constructed by Ashoka. The location is easy to locate in Sarnath, near Sarnath musium. Transportation is easily available from here. Food and water is not allowed inside the historical place. Religious, peaceful and a monumental place to visit anytime in the year.

We went in the last week of December 2019, just before the lockdown. I saw a great Buddhist temple. Great atmosphere and great location. A bit far from the main varanasi town. But unfortunately we could not enter that day.One was late then it was closed for work inside that day. This was the place at Sarnath where the Buddha gave his first sermon to a mere 5 disciples. Beautifully maintained grounds and monuments ...a must see.. The Dhamek stupa is part of the ruins at Sarnath. It’s majestic with some decorations on the outer wall. The stupa was built by Ashoka and then rebuilt again. Thank you 🙂

Dhamekh Stupa is located in Sarnath, which 13 km away from main Varanasi or Banaras in Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the most important Buddhist structures in India. There are many other monument along with Stupa. And also there are many dais around the stupa, which are used for meditation. This is such a lovely place to enjoy with family and friends. Because it is spread over a very large area, we have to walk a lot, so make sure you carry something comfortable footwear. It will take around 30-60 min to visit entire area of stupa. Ticket: 5 per person for Indian Citizens 100 per person for Foreigners

One of the most sacred pilgrimages in Buddhism, this stupa marks the spot where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon. The sheer size of the stupa and the archaeological ruins nearby offer a lifetime experience for history lovers and ordinary tourists alike. The beautiful surroundings also provide a calm and peaceful place for a family outing.

Stupas originated as pre-Buddhist tumuli, in which ascetics were buried in a seated position,[2] called chaitya.[3] After the parinirvana of the Buddha, his remains were cremated and the ashes divided and buried under eight mounds with two further mounds encasing the urn and the embers. Little is known about these early stupas, particularly since it has not been possible to identify the original ten monuments. However, some later stupas, such as at Sarnath and Sanchi, seem to be embellishments of earlier mounds.[4] The Dhamek Stupa was built in 500 CE[5] to replace an earlier structure commissioned by the great Mauryan king Ashoka in 249 BCE, along with several other monuments, to commemorate the Buddha's activities in this location. Stupas originated as circular mounds encircled by large stones. King Ashoka built stupas to enshrine small pieces of calcinated bone and other relics of the Buddha and his disciples.[6] An Ashoka pillar with an edict engraved on it stands near the site.

Sarnath (Hindustani pronunciation: [saːɾnaːtʰ]) is a place located 10 kilometres north-east of Varanasi near the confluence of the Ganges and the Varuna rivers in Uttar Pradesh, India. The Deer Park in Sarnath is where Gautama Buddha first taught the Dharma, and where the Buddhist Sangha came into existence through the enlightenment of Kondanna.

Dhamek Stupa is one of the most significant and famous spots in Sarnath. It is the place where Buddha delivered his first sermon and revealed the eightfold path leading to NIRVANA.Dhamek Stupa represents the deer park and Buddhist Monks along with their disciples can be seen sitting in the park in ‘Dhyan Mudra’ to attain peace and tranquility. A must visit place for all who are in search of peace and happiness. Buddhist pilgrims from all over the world visit this place throughout the year. The Stupa is maintained and looked after by ASI and is under their control. There is an entry ticket for the tourists at the Entrance and instruction boards are installed for dos and dont’s. An unforgettable place.

It is beautiful. It is the place where Lord Buddha taught his first lecture after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya. The wall of the stupa is covered with carved figures of humans, birds and Brahmi Language. According to the guide, most of the wall sculptures were destroyed by different invaders at different time periods and were restored by the British. The smooth part is the restored wall and the carved part is the original wall.

Dhamek stupa is one of the most popular attractions in the sarnath. The huge structure of the stupa can be seen from anywhere near the archaeological park and the sarnath temple. Dhamek Stupa is one of the most important sights in Sarnath and its mostly due to its antiquity and significance of being the exact spot of Buddha’s first sermon. It was here that he revealed the eightfold path leading to nirvana. The stupa is composed of a cylindrical tower that rises around 43m and the diameter of the monument is a formidable 28m

Dhamekh Stupa in Sarnath is a mesmerizing testament to ancient history and spirituality. The sheer size and intricate design of this stupa left me in awe as I stood in its presence. The serene atmosphere around the stupa adds to its aura, making it a perfect place for contemplation and meditation. The detailed carvings and inscriptions on the stupa provide a glimpse into the rich Buddhist heritage of the region. It's incredible to think about the significance of this site as the place where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. The stupa holds a deep spiritual energy that's palpable even to those not well-versed in Buddhist teachings. The well-maintained surroundings and informative plaques make it easy to understand the historical importance of Dhamekh Stupa. The nearby museum enhances the experience by offering additional insights into the history of Sarnath and Buddhism. Visiting Dhamekh Stupa was a humbling and awe-inspiring experience for me. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a spiritual seeker, or simply someone looking to explore the cultural heritage of India, this site is a must-visit. It's a place where you can truly feel connected to the roots of Buddhism and appreciate the beauty of ancient architecture.

The Dhamekh Stupa is part of the Archaeological ruins of Sarnath, it marks the place where Buddha gave his first sermon. There are some rumors that it might have been one of the stupas where Buddha's ashes were buried, but from what I read it's not confirmed. Nevertheless it's still an important Buddhist historical monument. The cost of the ticket is 25 rs for an Indian, including a visit to the museum.

I visited this place around 1:00 PM on Saturday. It wasn't too crowded, and I could enter without waiting, but I had to purchase the ticket online. To ensure a smooth entrance, it's a good idea to buy the ticket before your visit. The stupa is impressively large, and there are remnants of historical buildings and the grand stupa. The place is exceptionally well-preserved and maintained. It allows you to immerse yourself in the historical Hindu architecture. This spot also serves as a fantastic location for capturing photos, thanks to its clean and well-maintained historical buildings.

Dhamekh Stupa in Sarnath is a captivating blend of history and architecture. With a solid cylindrical structure, a 93' diameter dome, and a height of 110', it stands as a testament to ancient craftsmanship. The lower stone construction, adorned with Gupta-style geometric patterns, gives way to an upper brick masonry, possibly due to pragmatic considerations. Cunningham's exploration, though missing relics, uncovered a 6th/7th-century inscribed slab and hinted at an earlier Mauryan structure. Oertel suggests it might be a memorial stupa where Maitreya received assurance from Sakyamuni. The stupa's deep roots through Kushan and Mauryan horizons make it a fascinating archaeological site. For travelers, Dhamekh Stupa offers a journey through time, with Gupta-era craftsmanship and the mystery of its deeper historical layers. The serene surroundings add to the experience, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts and those seeking spiritual connection. 🏛️ #SarnathHistory #AncientArchitecture

Dhamek Stupa is in Sarnath, Varanasi. It is a historical monuments made during Buddha period. It is near Sarnath Zoo and the Buddha Temple. It's height is about 100 feet . The huge campus is a delight for history & heritage lovers. Apart from the main structure, there are innumerable small structures with some significance or the other. You can see that the excavations don't even seem to be complete & yet, the magnitude of it stuns you. Legend has it that if you manage to fling a white prayer cloth atop the stupa, your wishes will be fulfilled. While it may seem impossible to passersby, there are lads here who do that for a fee.

Sarnath, 10km from Varanasi, is one of the most revered Buddhist pilgrimage centers. It is believed that after attaining the Enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, it was here that Lord Buddha preached his first sermon, sanctified as Maha Dharm Chakra Parivartan. The great Dhamekh Stupa and several other structures stand testimony to the importance the place enjoyed at that time. The Chaukhandi Stupa is the place where, during his first visit to Sarnath, Lord Buddha met his first five disciples. The area is a treasure trove of archaeological findings such as Dharmrajika Stupa and Mulgandhkuti Vihar. The smooth glistening pillar established by Emperor Ashoka in 273-232 B.C. marks the foundation of the Buddhist Sangha, and the Lion Capital atop this pillar is now India's National Emblem.

There is a grand temple of Buddha here. This place is quite famous for the fact that here Lord Gautam Buddha gave his first sermon to his 5 followers. That's why Buddhism spread, that's why it is very famous in the country and the world. Here Chinese people come to visit in very good numbers and all the things found here are either written in Pali or in Mandarin. It feels great to walk here. The stupa here is even more attractive.

Varanasi is an ancient city in India known for its timeless beauty. The majestic Ghats, the ancient temples, and the zigzag lanes all come together to create an enchanting sight. As the sunsets, the air is filled with the sound of temple bells, the smell of incense and the sight of lit oil lamps floating along the River Ganges. It is said that one can find spiritual peace in this holy city. It is no wonder that the city has attracted pilgrims for centuries. Along with several places to visit, one of the famous places that add one more star to the beauty of Varanasi is Sarnath. Few kilometers away from the city, the place holds immense importance as well as pleasure scenes to the eyes. Sarnath is considered to be one of the four most important pilgrimage places for Buddhists all over the world. As the site of the Buddha’s first sermon, it holds a unique place in history. The Varanasi trip will be totally incomplete without visiting Sarnath.

Sarnath is known for two things: Buddha gave his first sermon and for the Ashoka Pillar.Mauryan emperor, Ashoka, fought the battle of Kalinga and, disgusted by the bloodshed, became a Buddhist. Ashoka built many beautiful stupas and monasteries in Sarnath.Dhamek Stupa while being present since over 2000 years, the surroundings have been much upgraded. With the new light show adding to the experience. Sir Alexander Cunningham excavated the Dhamekh stupa. The Ashokan Pillar, the historical remains around the main stupa itself are maintained well and are informative. Fees for entrance, was available to us only through an Online mode, which was an suprise, but overall very impressed with the upkeep by Indian Archaeological Society of our heritage. There are many guides also available if u want to hire for explanation,we do same n he explains very well...

The Dhamek Stupa is located inside the compound that also has the ruins of the monasteries of Sarnath. The lion capital of the Ashokan pillar is in the Sarnath Museum but the ruins of the pillars can be seen here. You have to walk a lot to tour the whole campus. Visitors need to buy tickets to enter the compound. Water bottles are not allowed inside to avoid littering, drinking water is available.

Dhamek Stupa is one of the most famous Buddhist stupas located in Sarnath near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, India. It was originally built in 249 BCE during the reign of king Ashoka. It is widely believed that Lord Buddha preached his first sermon to his five disciples at the Dhamek Stupa in Sarnath, and thus was set in motion the Weel of Dharma. The lower portion of the stupa is covered with stones that are chiseled with exquisite floral carvings of the Gupta period. The borders of the stupa bear delicately carved figures of humans and birds.

It is said that Buddha preached his first sermon here. This place probably has strong appeal to followers of Buddha. Not much was left from Buddha’s era. The Dhamekh stupa is the most prominent material monument. The current building is about 1500 years old, but 1000 younger than original place of first sermon. The place is remarkable for its spiritual value. Visitors can see Buddhist monks praying, preaching or meditating. Their orange robes and distinctive voices bring life in this place

A must visit and truly an Eye Feast for the lovers of Historical and Archeological sites. Between 1834-36 , Alexander Cunningham (First Director-General of Archaeological Survey of India), excavated the Dhamekh, Dharmarajika, and Chaukhandi stupas along with a monastery and temple. The most famous was excavation by Friedrich Oscar Oertel of the Ashoka Pillar, including the Lion Capital in 1904-05.Dharmarajika stupa is the one said to have been built by Ashoka to commemorate Buddha’s first sermon. The place is well maintained and clean.

A holy place to visit especially for followers of Buddhism. One thing I liked was that nobody is allowed to bring plastic bottles or plastic bags inside. It helps to keep the area clean Ticket is 30 rupees per person with a visit to museum included. For Children till 5 yrs no need to buy ticket.

It was nice to watch sound and light show here. Only 100 visitors are allowed in a day, so if you plan to witness it, must book it in initial hours of day. The price of ₹200/ per person seems high. We watched it in January, it starts at 6.30 pm but you need to take your seat much earlier. Since it was in open area, keep sufficient woollen with you. Bottled packaged water not allowed but you can carry home packaged bottled water. Must wear Mask due to COVID 19. No mask no entry is observed. For other details see pictures posted by me.

Dhamek Stupa is a massive stupa located at Sarnath, Varanasi. The Dhamek Stupa is said to mark the spot (Rishipattana which can be translated as "where the Rishi arrived") where the Buddha gave the first sermon to his first five disciples, led by Kaundinya. After attaining enlightenment, "revealing his Eightfold Path leading to nirvana". This event marked the formation of the sangha. In several of the ancient sources the site of the first sermon is mentioned to have been at a ″Mriga-dayaa-vanam″ or a sanctuary for animals. It's the most beautiful natural place to visit. We must visit it at least once in our life.

From the crowd of Varanasi, we headed to the natural beauty and peaceful place known Dhamekh Stupa. It is near the museum. An advice to travellers - this place closes on Fridays including museums, stupa and local market around this area. And most often, it opens till 4PM.

Beautiful place. Nicely maintained. Original place of the Ashoka pillar. The base of it is still there but the main lion statue is shifted to nearby museum. The ticketing system of the park and museum is fully digital, but not user friendly. Human presence is required to guide people hoy to buy online ticket. Ticket punching is also a bit complicated, although handled by the security people.

The place where Buddha has preached first sermon after getting enlightened. Wow! Truly spectacular stupa. Place is clean, peaceful and inspiring. Little hassle of payment of online QR code at the entry point. Otherwise, once entering inside, there is peace, calm and vibrant atmosphere.

Dhamek Stupa (also spelled Dhamekh and Dhamekha) is a massive stupa located at the archaeological site of Sarnath in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India.Dhamek Stupa marks the precise location where the Buddha preached his first discourse to his first five disciples (Kaundinya, Assaji, Bhaddiya, Vappa and Mahanama), and where all five eventually became fully liberated. Dhamek Stupa marks the precise location where the Buddha preached his first discourse to his first five disciples (Kaundinya, Assaji, Bhaddiya, Vappa and Mahanama), and where all five eventually became fully liberated. This event marked the formation of the sangha. Several of the ancient sources describe the site of this first sermon as a Mriga-dayaa-vanam or a sanctuary for animals. (In Sanskrit, the word mriga is used in the sense of game animals, with deer being the most common). After the parinirvana of the Buddha in 544 BCE, his remains were cremated and the ashes were divided and buried under eight stupas, with two further stupas encasing the urn and the embers. Dhamek Stupa was presumably among these eight stupas. In 249 BCE, Mauryan King Ashoka commissioned the expansion of Dhamek Stupa.Dhamek Stupa was further expanded in 6th century CE. A 17th-century Jain manuscript describes a Jain temple in Varanasi as a pilgrimage site for Jains. The temple is located close to "a famous Bodisattva sanctuary" at a place called dharmeksā.

Dhamek Stupa, located in Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, India, is a remarkable monument that holds immense historical and spiritual significance. This massive stupa marks the exact spot where the Buddha delivered his first sermon to his initial five disciples, leading them to achieve enlightenment. Its name, derived from the Sanskrit word "dharmeksā," meaning "pondering of the law," reflects its importance as a site for reflection and contemplation. Situated 180 meters east of Dharmarajika Stupa, within the archaeological site of Sarnath, Dhamek Stupa attracts visitors from all over the world. Sarnath itself is conveniently located just 12 kilometres northeast of Varanasi. The stupa's current form consists of a solid cylindrical structure made of bricks and stone, standing at an impressive height of 43.6 meters with a diameter of 28 meters. The outer walls are adorned with intricately carved figures of humans and birds, displaying the exquisite craftsmanship of ancient times. Additionally, Brahmi script inscriptions can be found throughout the stupa, adding to its historical significance. Although the stupa has undergone multiple expansions throughout history, the upper part remains unfinished. During his visit to Sarnath in 640 CE, Xuanzang noted that the main stupa was nearly 300 feet high, emphasizing its prominence during that era. The origins of Dhamek Stupa can be traced back to the time of King Ashoka in the Mauryan period, when the Buddha's remains were divided and buried under eight stupas. However, the present structure of Dhamek Stupa is conclusively dated to the Gupta period in the 5th-6th century CE. Visiting Dhamek Stupa is an awe-inspiring experience for both history enthusiasts and spiritual seekers. Its rich cultural heritage and association with the Buddha's teachings make it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in Buddhism or ancient Indian history.

Very famous and all old stupa, actually the first 1 built 2300 years ago. This is a place where Buddha started to spred his knowledge.

  • 3/5 Rajasekaran S. 5 months ago on Google
If you have limited time, you can just see the Stupa from the gate. You won't miss anything. It is just a vast area with the stupa in a far corner. Nothing much to see. It is just big solid cylindrical structure to commemorate "Lord Buddha's first sermon" at this place after his enlightenment in a different place. There is also a damaged fragments of a pillar erected by Emperor Asoka
