Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the most famous Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located in Vishwanath Gali of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. The Temple stands on the western bank of the holy river Ganga, and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the holiest of Shiva Temples. The main deity is known by the names Shri Vishwanath and Vishweshwara (IAST: Vishveshvara) literally meaning Lord of the Universe. Varanasi city is also called Kashi in ancient time, and hence the Temple is popularly called as Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The etymology of the name Vishveshvara is Vishva: Universe, Ishvara: lord, one who has dominion. The Temple has been referred to in Hindu scriptures for a very long time as a central part of worship in the Shaiva Philosophy. It has been destroyed and re-constructed a number of times in history. The last structure was demolished by Aurangzeb, the sixth Mughal emperor who constructed the Gyanvapi Mosque on its site. The current structure was built on an adjacent site by the Maratha ruler Ahilya Bai Holkar of Indore in1780. Maharaja Ranjit Singh, First Sikh Maharaja, donated 1 ton Gold for flaming Temple's Dome. Since 1983, the temple has been managed by the government of Uttar Pradesh. During the religious occasion of Shivratri, Kashi Naresh (King of Kashi) is the chief officiating priest. The temple is mentioned in the Puranas including the Kashi Khanda (section) of Skanda Purana. The original Vishwanath temple was destroyed by army of Ashish in 1194 CE, when he defeated the Raja of Kannauj as a commander of Mohammad Ghori. The temple was rebuilt by a Gujarati merchant during the reign of Delhi's Sultan Iltutmish (1211–1266 CE). It was demolished again during the rule of either Hussain Shah Sharqi (1447–1458) or Sikandar Lodhi (1489–1517). Raja Man Singh built the temple during Mughal emperor Akbar's rule, but some Hindus boycotted it as he had let the Mughals marry within his family. Raja Todar Mal further re-built the temple with Akbar's funding at its original site in 1585.In 1669 CE Emperor Aurangzeb destroyed the temple and built the Gyanvapi Mosque in its place. The remains of the erstwhile temple can be seen in the foundation, the columns and at the rear part of the mosque

The most well maintained and cleanest ghat amongst all ghats in Varanasi. This is the most prominent ghat and a tourist planning to visit Varanasi must consider Dasaswamedh ghat as the first preference for stay. Although the roads and lanes are too narrow for a vehicle to enter for dropping or picking up. But the main road is at a walkable distance only and can be managed by one and all provided there isn’t any health issues or physical disabilities. All pick up and drop facilities are available from the main road only.

The ghat is a beautiful place to visit while in Varanasi. A lot of improvements are taking place. Cleanliness still has a lot of scope. Boat ride is a must do activity to enjoy the beauty of ghats also it is much clearer on the other side if you wish to take a bath.

What an amazing place! Varanasi's most well-known ghat. Arti is incredible. Mantras will be chanted all around you, and you will feel magnificent and graceful. Arti generally begins around 6:30 p.m., but arrive early to ensure a spot as it will be crowded. From the boat, you can see Arti as well. For a single person, a boat normally costs 100rupees. Never seen anything like it before. Never miss this ghat once you are at Banaras

Dashashwamedh Ghat one if the oldest and spectacular ghat, located at the bank of ganga river near old Vishwanath temple in The Kashi. The mythologies says here that lord Brahma sacrificed ten horse's in a Yajna here. The other one says that lord Brahma made this ghat to welcome lord Shiva. The ghat is mainly famous for it's evening Ganga aarti or Agni puja, which is held by some religious sadhus for lord shiva, Surya dev, Ganga Ma and the universe. The view is spectacular watching from crowd or from up front in a boat. The amazing thing is you can sit in the boat surrounded by Ganga and watch the aarti from upfront. This is just amazing if you are from India or coming from another country do come visit here. It's near the vishvanath temple and the famous godoliya Market.

Dashashwamedh Ghat is an enchanting destination that captures the essence of spirituality and tranquility. Situated on the banks of the sacred river Ganges in Varanasi, this ghat is renowned for its mesmerizing Ganga Aarti, a divine ritual that enchants visitors with its mesmerizing display of lights, music, and prayers. One of the most captivating experiences at Dashashwamedh Ghat is witnessing the Ganga Aarti ceremony. As the sun sets and the evening descends, the ghat comes alive with the melodious chants, rhythmic drum beats, and the sight of priests offering prayers to the river goddess. The flickering flames of the aarti lamps illuminate the darkness, creating a mystical ambiance that leaves a lasting impression on all who witness it. Despite the bustling crowds that gather to witness the aarti, Dashashwamedh Ghat also offers moments of solitude and introspection. Whether you choose to sit quietly by the riverbank, watching the gentle flow of the Ganges, or immerse yourself in meditation amidst the spiritual energy that permeates the air, you'll find that loneliness is replaced by a profound sense of connection to something greater than oneself. The spiritual aura of Dashashwamedh Ghat is palpable, drawing pilgrims and seekers from all corners of the globe. Amidst the chaos of Varanasi, this ghat serves as a sanctuary of peace and bliss, where one can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and connect with the divine. In conclusion, Dashashwamedh Ghat is not just a place; it's an experience that touches the soul. Whether you come to witness the mesmerizing Ganga Aarti, sit alone in quiet contemplation, or simply soak in the spiritual ambiance, you'll leave feeling rejuvenated, inspired, and deeply connected to the divine.

Most Famous Ghat of Varanasi for the Ganga Aarti in the evening. If you're here you must take a part in Ganga Arti at 18:00 365×7 but one thing you have to notice that, before 40-50 minutes of Aarti people reserve their places to avoid intense crowd. So if you wanna see the Arti from close you must take your place at 17:00 Delicious fast food is also available here for the tourists.

Its always relaxing to sit on the stairs at the ghat and observe the life here. you can very well see rituals of a newly born being done and the same time last rituals of a departed soul taking place. The life starts and ends at ganga. The faith of people who gather here is commendable and the much needed element in every ways of life

Beautiful place. We took a nice boat ride there. You can easily get wheel chair service for senior citizens. This ghat has a beautiful view. Here u can directly go and ask for a ride. It will cost u around 2500 for a family. And if you go for a shared one, it will cost u 250 per person. Dont go by hotel’s booking bcoz they have their commission. Also u can get a boat with roof, and little more luxurious at around 5000 rs.

Dashashwamedh Ghat is a main ghat in Varanasi on the Ganga River in Uttar Pradesh. It is located close to kashi Vishwanath Temple and most big and beautiful ghat. Lord Brahma created it to welcome Shiva, and also Brahma sacrificed ten horses during Dasa-Ashwamedha yajna here. The present ghat was built by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao in the 1748. A few decades later, Ahilyabahi Holkar, the Queen of Indore rebuilt the ghat in the year 1774.[1] Also an observatory built by Maharaja Jai Singh of Jaipur in the year 1737. Ganga arti around 7:00 pm held every day , it took 60 min around, during Arti it is just look like Heaven 😌😌. Must Visit Also Pm Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated a bawan next to it..

Dashashwamedh Ghat is one of the most important ghats in Varanasi, India. It is located on the banks of the Ganges River and is a popular spot for Hindu pilgrims and tourists alike. The ghat is named after the ten horses that were sacrificed by King Dasharatha in order to obtain a son. It is believed that bathing in the Ganges at Dashashwamedh Ghat can cleanse one of all sins. The ghat is also home to a number of temples and shrines, including the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the most sacred Hindu temples in India. Dashashwamedh Ghat is a popular spot for watching the Ganga Aarti, a ritual that is performed every evening at sunset. The Aarti is a beautiful and moving ceremony that involves the chanting of hymns, the offering of flowers and incense, and the waving of lamps in front of the river. It is a truly unforgettable experience. If you are planning a trip to Varanasi, be sure to add Dashashwamedh Ghat to your list of places to visit. It is a truly special place that will leave you with a lasting impression.

It's so mesmerizing to see Ganga Aarti when you visit the ghat. The aarti preparation begins around 6 pm , however if you wish to see it be there at least by 5pm or else it will be way too crowded. You may get the boat ride to see all the ghats and the aarti too. During the day you can experience good view of the ganga river. By this ghat there are various shops to bring the souvenir and other stuffs

I understand that it is one of the oldest cities, and this ghat especially, is one of the holiest places where millions of pilgrims come every year. But there should be some system in place by now where the crowd can be managed. The road leading to this ghat is wide, but there's no system of direction here. The ghat steps are very unsafe and slippery, yet people are allowed to stand on the steps and throng. The local authorities should enforce some way to make people stay safe and enjoy responsibly, especially during the evening prayers.

If your aim is to see full aarti then reach here by 5pm to occupy a good spot by the podium, boatsman also allow people to watch the aarti from their boats. This evening aarti goes on for an hour and half and considered to be the main attraction of Banaras.

In 2018 Me and my family members visited Banaras ( Varanasi ), Great place. After visited Vishwanath Temple , We visited Dasashwamedh Ghat, Ghats of Varanasi amazing. Loved boat ride in river Ganges. But missed evening Ganga Aarti.

There is a good pier, cleanliness is also better than before. If you come here in the evening, you can enjoy the aarti here. If you go anywhere there are some things that you do not like, then you can find some such things here too. When I just went, the last time I took the car from the side of a dog and stayed at the ghat that he bitten.😅😅 So I did not like it, since I have come through abuse, it is in my mind that I am careful with dogs.😂😂 Well the place is good if you go here, then you go in the evening and come back after seeing Aarti. Shraddha will arise on your own.

Must visit the place. My experience: 1. I went there and looked in the water, where I saw a lot of fish, they were moving very close to my feet, it was a very happy moment. At that moment I realized that if you believe in Ganga (God) then nature looks so beautiful. 2. How beautiful the ghat is. 3. There are a lot of activities you can do like worshiping, crossing the river by boat, bathing, riding horses and also riding camels. 3. The river Ganges was so clean.

The area around the ghat is clean. But the river near the ghat is dirty, strewn with flowers and other puja stuff. I don't blame the govt. We are responsible. If you want to take a dip in the holy Ganga, take a boat to the other shore of the river. That side is very clean and has acceptable changing rooms for women as well. Take water from the middle of the river. It is surprisingly clean. Another major problem is with reaching the ghat is that you'll have to leave your car about a kilometre and a half behind. From that point no mode of transportation is available, although the cops were not stopping private two wheelers. If you have medical problem, you might as well drop the idea of visiting this ghat. Or request a two wheeler rider to give you a lift.

A person should at least visit Varanasi once in his/her lifetime. Main attraction of Varanasi is ghats and the best ghat is Dashashwamedh Ghat. Its very clean, well maintained ghat in Varanasi. Visit the ghat in the morning time. Take a bath in holy Ganges. The cool, calm Ganga ji will refresh your mind and body. Enjoy the morning vibe of the ghat with a hot kulhad chay in hand. Take a boat ride (its very cheap, 50Rs) to the other side of Ganges. Take some nice pictures of the ghat. The golden yellow shaded temples and ghat in the rising sunshine will be remembered till your last breath. Must watch the Ganga aarti in the evening which is a joyful experience. The main Ganga aarti spots are Dashashwamedh ghat and Assi ghat.

The ghat is very beautiful, but during the month of Sawan, it gets overcrowded. There was lack in security as chaos may have taken place looking at the crowd. Apart from this, the ghat has a spectator view with tranquility and so much positivity. Arti at night is the attraction of this ghat. PS- The river and Varanasi is a part of our mother Earth. Please keep it neat and clean. Be a responsible traveller. :)

The ghats are a great and fascinating riverside walk, and for the western traveller let you experience absolute classic the sights, sounds and yes - the smells of India in a couple of miles with no real hassle or pestering. But if you only have time or money for one thing whilst you are there make sure it is the aarti ceremony at sunset. If you are not Hindu and not taking part in the ceremony be sure to remain respectful and unobtrusive because this is not a tourist spectacle but a sincere and prayerful act of worship for more than 90% of the people there. However, it really is a spectacle: a vibrant, awe-inspiring feast for the eyes and ears.

One of the most amazing traveling experiences. The place where thousands years old traditions comes alive every morning and every night. The place is crowded as hell, the temperature was worse then in hell, but it was worth to see the ceremony. If you want to experience pure and authentic hindu atmosphere, this is the place you should visit!

You will fee yourself connecting to your spiritual being.

One the most crowded and famous ghat of banaras. Best time visit is in morning hours but if you want to attend ganga arti then please plan to attend evening arti.

  • 5/5 Akaash S. 10 months ago on Google
Dashashwamedh ghat is a sight to behold. The sound of bells and singing fills the air as you walk through the busy streets. The ghat itself is an architectural and artistic marvel, with elaborate carvings and brilliant colours covering every surface. As locals and visitors alike converge to see the daily Ganga aarti ceremony, the excitement of the throng is contagious. The sight of hundreds of lamps being lit and offered to the river is incredibly hypnotic. And you can't help but feel a sense of serenity and spirituality sweep over you as you take in the beauty of the ghat and the river.

Mesmerized by this wonderful place. Had a nice ganga snaan here and enjoyed it to the fullest. Although lack of change room facilities is a serious issue, specially for ladies. Hope they provide at least with makeshift change room facilities for ladies. Also enjoyed the evening ganga aarti here which is an experience out of this world. One has to witness the aarti themselves to get an idea of what I'm talking about. Fantastic!!

This ghat is famous for evening ganga arti. You must attent the arti, that was a magical experience which soothens your soul. Although it will be very crowded during that time but it's OK you'll able to see arti from where ever you are, either on stairs or on boat. You can take boat ride around 5:30 to see arti from boat. Please don't be fooled by local guide as they will convince you and charge you lot more then required for a boat ride. Shared boat will cost you 50 ruppes per person. If you want personal boat then you can bargain and it is suggested to hire personal boat if you are in a group.

Conjuncture of culture, religion and nature. Evenings and early mornings are amazing. Ganga Arti is one of the most spectacular rituals you will see ever.

  • 5/5 Naveen G. 5 months ago on Google
The present ghat was built by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao in the year 1748. A few decades later, Ahilyabahi Holkar, the Queen of Indore, rebuilt the ghat in the year 1774. The Ganga Aarti (ritual of offering prayer to the Ganges river) is held daily at dusk. Several priests perform this ritual by carrying deepam and moving it up and down in a rhythmic tune of bhajans.Special aartis are held on Tuesdays and on religious festivals. The Ganga Aarti starts soon after sunset and lasts for about 45 minutes. In the summer, the Aarti begins at about 7pm due to late sunsets and in winter it starts at around 6pm. Hundreds of people gather at the ghat every evening to watch the event It is located close to Vishwanath Temple. There are two Hindu legends associated with the ghat: according to one, Brahma created it to welcome Shiva, and in another, Brahma Performed 10 Ashwamegha Yajna, Dasa-Ashwamedha yajna.

When you visit Varanasi you have to witness the grandeur of the ghats and corridors which have been renovated now in order to accommodate even more visitors. The lane which makes way to ghat is itself a witness to the rich history of varanasi and its timelines. It becomes a bustling affair from afternoon till midnight with street vendors and hawkers everywhere where eyes to. The most interesting and majestic picture on the ghats is the dedicated arati done by the priests each and every evening. Lakhs of visitors and locals gather each evening to witness the art form. You can book a seat to observe the Arati by paying a token otherwise be a bystander to the event.

This is the most exclusive and most important ghat of Varanasi. It's close to temple kashi vishwanath and the ganga aarti is most special of this ghat. One must feel the enthusiasm of this aarti.

Dashashwamedh Ghat is a must-visit destination for those seeking a profound spiritual and cultural experience in Varanasi. Its historical significance, coupled with the mesmerizing Ganga Aarti ceremony, makes it a captivating place that leaves a lasting impression on anyone fortunate enough to witness its magic. One of the most captivating aspects of Dashashwamedh Ghat is the daily Ganga Aarti ceremony that takes place in the evening. The air becomes charged with devotional fervor as priests clad in traditional attire perform intricate rituals with incense, lamps, and sacred chants. The synchronized movements of the priests, combined with the flickering flames and the rhythmic sound of bells, create a captivating sensory experience that lingers in the memory of every spectator.

Luckily, I had visited just the night before Dev deepawali and it was extremely crowded, I had to find a boat and find my spot from the river side to see the famous Ganga aarti. You must visit these ghats during dev deepawali to witness the fireworks, ghats lightened with lakhs of Diyas but must be ready for extreme crowds and plan your visit accordingly. You can also hire a private boat to hop from ghat to ghat from the river side and enjoy the scenic beauty of the city.
