This is a place that every single Canadian should go - and I cannot express that enough!!! With over 18,000 names of our fallen soldiers that sacrificed everything, this place is hallowed ground. You can literally feel the soul of this place, and it's powerful!!! It also gives you a valuable perspective of how close the opposing forces were to reach other. And, when the signs say 'do not cross this line', they mean it! There is still unexplored ordinance in the from over 100 years ago. That's why they have sheep cut the grass.

As a Canadian visiting France, I had to see Vimy Ridge. We had a tour guide for the underground communication lines and the above ground lines. It was quite informative but took less than or about 1/2 hour. There is also a great information cenfre with displays for more information about the battle. The day we went there was not many people there. The monument was stunning and worth the visit.

The Canadian National Vimy Memorial is a war memorial site in France dedicated to the memory of Canadian Expeditionary Force members killed during the First World War. It also serves as the place of commemoration for Canadian soldiers of the First World War killed or presumed dead in France who have no known grave. The monument is the centrepiece of a 100-hectare (250-acre) preserved battlefield park that encompasses a portion of the ground over which the Canadian Corps made their assault during the initial Battle of Vimy Ridge offensive of the Battle of Arras.

An incredibly well kept memorial that is always breath taking to visit. It's ideally located for convenient break on the drive between Paris and Calais. The views from the memorial are great, there is a wide panoramic scene of the entire immediate area. The visitor centre is very informative with a lot for adults and older children to see and read. The trenches are impeccably kept and the staff are very friendly. Expect to spend 2 hours here. There are toilets located near the memorial and in the visitor centre. Talk a walk (10/15 mins) between the car park at the memorial and visitor centre to take in the affect of war on the landscape.

Fascinating memorial and associated visitor centre and trenches commemorating Canada’s sacrifices in the Great War. As is ever the case with these places, beautifully maintained but sombre and evocative. The visitor centre was brief but interesting and the guided tour of the preserved trenches equally brief but fascinating, particularly the tunnels and the proximity of Canadian and German lines. The only improvements to the tour would have been slightly slower movement to allow more time to look and absorb together with slightly fewer generic factoids about the war. Really enjoyable though.

I have long wanted to visit this memorial. It is a somber but awe inspiring structure and every Canadian should you have the opportunity, must visit this site. The area surrounding the site is still scarred from the war, with the massive craters from the explosions that started the assault still evident. The land is still littered with live explosives so is off limits. There is a large free parking lot near the memorial. Toilet facilities are provided too.

Impressive monument with visitor center, trenches and free underground tunnel tour. Incredible to see in person and pay respects to those who died far from home.

I've actually visited 3 times over the years, there is something special about Vimy. I think it's a mixture of amazing memorials, craters, and the wonderful guides who bring the battlefield and history to life. A brilliant place to visit for all ages.

Very evocative, but like any battlefields you have to try hard to imagine that it was not so peaceful as it is today. The Canadians did their best to help Britain. They did not have to do that, but they did. Canada is a great country, but it is a shame that their young men had to die here for the madness of politics.

Eine sehr schöne Gedenkstätte. Sehenswert.

For any Canadian in the area, this is a must see visit. Great memorial and good visitors center (staffed by Canadians). Especially like the trenches.

Another year and now 101 years since the 4 Canadian Divisions came together and fought together for the first time. The monument is well worth a visit. I have been to the April 9th commemoration many times. The photos are from this visit. The most magnificent occasion was the centenary in 2017. Thousands of Canadians descended on this small area of turf to celebrate and remember their ancestors. Truly spectacular. In 2018, maybe 150 spectators. Let's hope 2022 will see full public access.

Amazing site, lots to see. There are Canadian students who are employed by Canadian government to give free tours of the area. Give yourself time for the visitor centre, the tour, having time to walk the trenches and to also visit the monument which is a walk from the visitor centre.

After many years I finally had the opportunity to visit the Vimy battlefield; a place of great loss of life that is sobering prompting deep questions, at least for me, about what humans are capable of in so many capacities. The educational centre provided well thought out presentations of the reality of the Vimy experience. I was especially grateful to the staff for aiding me in locating documentation through their kiosks pertaining to my great uncles and grandfather who served in the Great War.

A unique monument that dominates the skyline for miles around. Very well maintained, very respectful of the historical significance this site played. We took the tour to experience the underground trenches, which I’d highly recommend, the tour guide was fantastic and so informed on the sites history and the time line of events.

  • 5/5 Allan S. 1 year ago on Google
Super site with plenty to see and some great guides. We had Alice show us round the tunnels, very knowledgeable and personable. Would go again. The actual memorial on the Ridge is spectacular.

  • 5/5 Stefanie 5 months ago on Google
Didn’t make it there during the day, but took a chance that memorial would be lit at night (like some of the photos posted), which it was, although the entire parking lot and paved walk to the memorial(about 80-100 yards) was pitch black. Brought a strong flashlight which helped, but it was very eerie and it wouldn’t have done much good had we ran into 4-legged visitors/animals. The monument itself was incredibly large, and extra special to see at night, but would recommend visiting during the day or at least leaving as soon as the lights come on. The drive back down from the ridge is pretty dark and windy - about 10 min. back to the highway.

Lots to see here. Not just the stunning Memorial but trenches, bomb craters and the visitors centre. Humbling place of a battle over hugely important Ridge in WW I

  • 5/5 Micah J. 1 year ago on Google
Humbling experience for a Canadian, shame the monument visit was ruined partially by a couple busloads of ignorant British teenagers and their chaperones who couldn't be bothered to explain the significance of the memorial to them beforehand or during the visit (nor would I imagine they listened if they did). The veterans affairs volunteer guides at both the memorial and visitor centre were extremely helpful and friendly, reminding me of being back home in Canada.

  • 5/5 Richard E. 7 months ago on Google
Wow! So much going on here but the memorial is simply staggering. If you want a great pic of the front then morning time is better otherwise it will be in the shade. The replica trenches are fantastic and the staff are knowledgeable and friendly. A must if undertaking a WW1 battlefield tour.

As a Canadian, I found my trip to the Vimy Memorial to be an incredibly humbling and worthwhile experience. The student guides were very helpful and knowledgeable. Travelling to the site from Arras by taxi is quick and affordable. I highly recommend visiting the grounds.

Beautiful and very well maintained. Worth heading down the road to the visitors center for free guided tours of the trench lines, too. Staff are all very friendly.

One the best memorials you'll ever see, it soars into the sky line with its dashing white colour making it almost biblical. The names of the fallen inscribed around her base will add to the sombre reality of its existence. The battle scared fields surround Vimy and the visitor centre is of interest with staff on hand ready to answer questions and help. The trenches are incredibly preserved.

The monument is majestic. I've wanted to visit for many years and finally made my way here. Seeing it in person is a profoundly moving and emotional experience. We owe the many fallen our eternal gratitude for what we have today. Sad but extremely proud visit for me. The education/information centre is great as well. Staffed by many young Canadians who will inform you and take you on 30 minute tours. An absolute must visit if you're in the area.

  • 5/5 Michael P. 4 years ago on Google
It was a very moving experience to visit the memorial. It was a place I always intended to visit and today I took the opportunity. It is perhaps the most impressive of the ww1 memorials in France. The visitor centre gives an opportunity to learn the history, the staff are friendly and welcoming. They also after free guided tours through a tunnel and trenches in English. The whole are is large with much of the battlefield left as it was with the remains of trenches and bomb craters. There are still unexplored munitions to be found but the dangerous areas are fenced off. If time is short it’s better to use your car than walk everywhere - there is parking near the memorial, at the visitor centre and other places. A visit here is a chance to learn, reflect on impact of war and to keep alive the memory of the hundreds of thousands of men from many nations who lost their lives. Let as use this experience as a reminder of past events and the need to avoid war in future.

Being Canadian, I was very proud of this memorial. It commemorates an important WWI battle, and arguably one of the most famous Canadian military victories to date. The monument itself is huge, and it sits on some beautiful surrounding grounds. There's a short guided tour through some of the trenches, which gives interesting background info. Also, all the staff are Canadian university students, so it almost felt like a little taste of home.
