A hidden gem in Palo Alto. The museum is free with reservation online. You can request an introduction / video and someone will talk to you about the exhibition. The artists’ watercolor paintings are breathtaking. He traveled the world and painted/ sketched/ collected samples of sediments, water, and rocks from the scenery. What’s even cooler is that each piece has a map marked where the scenic view is when the artist painted it. Definitely go with your family or even a date. My partner and I sat at one of the tables and sketched some fish. I can’t believe this is free, you can purchase a book there to support the place.

Gorgeous, little known gem of a museum. Not only do you get to see Tony Foster's beautiful watercolors, but there are great notes on the places he traveled to and how he worked. I loved that many of the paintings included his notes and had artifacts framed with them; it lends much more of a sense of place. Our PTA hosted an event here, and I've been here for a meeting as well, and the staff is really friendly and pleasant to work with. The space is well designed and open. It deserves to be better known and more visited.

One of my favorite art museums I’ve ever visited! Tony Foster is absolutely incredible and inspiring. The staff was so friendly and I was so happy they had a little shop so I could take home a book of Foster’s beautiful watercolors. I highly recommend visiting!

What a wonderful museum. My wife and I were mesmerized after studying the watercolors by Tim Foster. This destination is a gem. First of all, admission is free. Just make a reservation online ahead of your visit. You are greeted by name and given a tour of the lobby displays which introduce you to Tim Foster. He is a naturalist and world traveler who paints with water color "plein air" [outdoors]. So what sets Foster apart from other artists? Well, hei back packs, hiking to very remote locations to capture just the right view of Earth's most beautiful locations, often camping in freezing temperatures and painting in extreme heat. His trips are remarkable and you can share his journeys in a unique way. His paintings contain samples of items he gathers on location along with notes he writes in pencil at the bottom of each piece. The notes and comments are available in the free audio tour you download onto your iphone. Be sure to take your ear buds so you can get the full impact of Tim Fosters paintings. You do not want to miss this museum, located in an industrial area of Palo Alto California. We visited on April 8th, 2023.

Very nice (free) exhibition and extremely friendly staff. Bring your own headphones to listen to commentary by the artist on your phone (if you don't, they also have disposable headphones).

We held an event here, it was a great spot for it. Foster's art is inspiring, and it was an unexpected surprise to find this place in this neighborhood. The room where we gathered was a bit loud, but the space is big, and it was simple to find a quieter area.

Fabulous watercolors of nature trips by painter Tony Foster, presented in a modern, airy gallery. Too bad they aren't for sale!

A magnificent, free art museum that is too little known and still only a few years old, The Foster should be on everyone in the bay areas list of museums to visit. You could spend a quick hour or several hours of more in depth reading and listening to the guided self-tour. The paintings are all by one artist, Tony Foster, who does a plein art watercolor style on site at locations from his home in Cornwall to the U.S. Southwest to Chile to underwater Coral Reefs to the Arctic to Nepal and the U.S. New England area. There is a diversity of journeys and adventures that have gone into each of these paintings, which are some of the best curated I've seen, including at much larger and more well known museums. There are audio tours available on headset and you can download the link on a cell phone; I highly recommend this as you can listen to the artist themselves talk about the experience of painting each piece. There is linked YouTube videos for further information. If you prefer to read, do read the packet prepared for self-guided tours and the information below the pictures as it adds much to the experience of understanding not just the picture, but the context of when, where, how it was created as part of a larger exploration of a wild place. The staff are friendly and well informed and ready to provide information. The facilities are clean; it's accessible and there are regular places for rest and contemplation with benches scattered about. There's smart lighting that goes on and off in sections as you approach and leave areas. There's frequent events offered for both children and adults and tours can be arranged. Free and fairly easy street parking is available. Honestly, there is nothing I could critique here and only encourage people to go.

Beautiful and inspirational art by Tim Foster. Just incredible to see the most beautiful places in the world through his eyes and in watercolor. The museum is fun for kids too (they can draw, paint and do a scavenger hunt). The staff is super nice, so welcoming and answered our many questions.

This is such a beautiful museum displaying the works of Tony Foster. Incredible watercolor paintings of what nature looks like around that world that will capture the hears of ammeters and experts alike. They have a scavenger hunt for kids that equally entertaining for adults too! A station with lots of colors and paper to teach one how to start their drawing/painting journey. The staff are extremely kind and friendly.

We visited on the weekend, super friendly staff, well curated exhibition. Recommend making reservation online in advance, but they also allow walk in. The artwork is beautiful, I love that the artist included some souvenir pieces from the subjected area. Highly recommend to visit if you are in town.

The Foster Museum is a real gem that you can easily fit into a 1-2 hour time slot. That said, the collection isn't extensive, only dedicated to Tony Foster. However, Mr Foster's watercolors will take you to the most devastatingly beautiful places around the world from the verdant Borneo rainforest to the star studded Atacama desert, from the coral reef teeming with fish to the desolate wind swept Basecamp at the foot of the Everest, from the iconic Grand Canyon to a scenic canyon choked with moss cover trees near his native home. I felt bathed in beauty every time I visited.

Very impressive arts. The water coloring is much more vivid than what the camera photos can do for beautiful scenes. And it's very kid friendly. There are quite a bunch of tables with tools deliberately designed for kids. My daughter enjoyed the afternoon there a lot.

What an unexpectedly cool watercolor artist's museum!!! We had a great time there with my family. The museum front looks deceivingly small but there is so much to see inside! I practically went on a journey with the artist to all those magical places, including under water. Highly recommend!

I cant recommend this place highly enough. Amazing artwork in a beautiful venue with friendly and knowledgeable staff. Well worth a donation anytime you visit.

This is a real Palo Alto gem. It is free and open every day. Foster's watercolor's are wonderful - I'm not a watercolor fan and yet I really enjoy these. The stories and "souvenirs" behind them are equally fascinating. Great space to rent for entertaining too.

Parallel Projections between Two and Four PM Foster excels at objectivism, painting most successfully on his journeys through the American Southwest (photo). The odds and ends that are attached to each matted piece are a fun touch from his trips. Where Foster succeeds in technical detail, some of the watercolors fall flat (pun intended) in aesthetic depth: his personal rendering drawing style for clouds, water, air, and distance are no match for the precise pencil sketches that he starts with. A quote from Foster on the wall briefs the belief of his work: "...making art about some of the world's most extraordinary places is an acceptable practice for a contemporary artist." The traditionalist intent behind his art is enough for his patrons, and certainly enough for him.

The Foster is truly a hidden gem in Mountain View! I grew up in MV and always loved museums, and boy was I excited to see such a great one when I came back to visit my parents! The person who gave us our tour, Charles, was fantastic. Very knowledgeable and friendly! I absolutely LOVE the artwork, and hope I can meet Tony Foster someday. If you are in MV you MUST go see this delightful place! A+++!

Excellent watercolor artist's work on display. Also, each artwork originates in the field and the museum includes thre story of the creation journey. Wonderful staff; their knowledge and exuberance will enhance your visit. We will be back with others.

I'm lazy for writing reviews, but The Foster deserves the 5 stars. Beautiful watercolors in a perfectly conditioned space and incredibly helpful and welcoming staff. Definitively it's worth a visit (actually it's worth several visits).

A single artist museum filled with peace inspiring, soul satisfying landscapes from all over the world, a large number from Southwest US. Watercolor artist who travels to wild, remote places, did most of the work in the locale. Framed simply, including penciled journal info, and souvenirs (a word that does not convey the meaning of these objects). They also have an open studio component, this week it was build your own nature journal. I will come back again. A gem!

I tried to make a reservation by phone or online, but I didn't know and just stopped by. Poster's extensive works are on display. As I was running out of time, I couldn't see everything properly and made plans for the next time.
