We visited the Altes Museum while waiting for our time slot at the Pergamon. One shouldn’t compare the two museums but we were equally impressed by the Altes Museum. The collection is huge and the range in history equally grand. The building is beautiful and makes the visit even more enjoyable. Don’t miss standing in the middle of the circular hall and speaking, nice audio effect. The Greek gods on display in the circular hall made it a very special experience. We spent about 90 minutes in the museum and were very happy that we decided to visit. It was well worth the visit and we highly recommend it to anyone, including people who don’t usually go to museums.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the Altes Museum in Berlin! With two floors filled with artifacts and antiques, it's a treasure trove for history enthusiasts. The floor map proved incredibly helpful, and I recommend taking about 1.5 - 2.5 hours to explore all the sections. The museum provides storage for belongings, washrooms, and a delightful cafe – the lemon cake is a must-try! Booking slots on Sundays through the museum's website was convenient, especially considering the free admission on the first Sunday of each month. The museum primarily focuses on Greek and Roman art, offering a detailed exploration of paintings, sculptures, and jewelry. The two-floor setup provides a comprehensive journey through history, and the free cloakroom is a bonus. If you're into antique culture and art, this museum is a definite recommendation. Overall, a worthwhile destination for those intrigued by ancient history and art.

Very interesting museum, pretty large one too. We bought our tickets online in advance and didnt wait in any line. It's required to leave your bags in luggage storage, the service is free of charge of course. The museum is beautiful and compelling, very well organized and comfortable to get around. One staff member did laugh at me when my partner took photos of me, but other than that our visit was a lot of fun:)

A good detailed 2 floor history museum depicting Greek artefacts and the like. Good value and free cloakroom facility as they make you store this and any bags. Well worth a visit.

Nice museum with lots of artifacts and antiques. The museum has two floors, you will need approximately 2 - 3 hours to explore all the sections. Referring to the floor map and details would be really helpful. It has lots to provide if you are interested in history and antiques. There is a place to keep your belongings, washrooms and cafe in the museum. I loved the lemon cake in the cafe. We had booked our slots on Sunday through the museum on Sundays website. Note: The museum is free on the first Sunday of every month. Slots open 1 week before.

I didn't see the museum from the inside, but I attended free walking tour where I heard about the history of the building, its importance for different political regimes in the past, and how was the building used through the ages. If you don't specifically plan to visit the place, I still recommend to get at least some information about the building and its history. Without it, it's just another old building. But in reality, it has much more to offer.

The "Alte Museum" is dedicated to Greek, Roman and Etruscan artefacts, and contains an exquiste collection for these focus areas. The collection consists mainly of statues, sculptures, vases and other pottery, jewelry, tools and weapons. My personal favorite highlight is the greek section.

The museum has so many halls with exhibits. You can get an audio guide at the entrance. In one of the hall you can meet a woman - hall caretaker- who is able to greet you on English, Russian, Italian (not the full list 😃) and now on Ukrainian 😄. The museum is interesting and for grownups and kids, who can see there even yo-yo from the times of Pompei.

Great historical museum at first. The building is astonishing and the rooms are also really beautiful. There are a lot of similar items within the rooms, which makes the visit a bit boring after an hour. All in all, great but not the greatest.

The Altes Museum is a great place to visit which gives you a really close look to Greek and Roman culture through art. I definitely recommend visiting this museum when going to Museum Island but my attention does tend to fall off after a few exhibition rooms in a row.

Awesome museum, try to buy tickets early to avoid a line and get the museum pass for 18 Euro. You must put your bag and jacket in the cloak room but the whole museum is heated. It's a workout in itself to do but so worth it. Wear comfy shoes.

(Translated by Google) It was built when looking at the Domo on the left as a counterweight to the city palace on the right. This is no coincidence. The architect wanted to tell the emperor with his Greek style of the building about democracy which is the future. After the third world war, the palace was destroyed and the parliament of the GDR was built on the site, in the latter it was also demolished and this became an argument to restore the city drow so that the architectural concept was completed.

(Translated by Google) A beautiful large monumental building is evidence of the great architectural achievement in this wonderful building. The building has seen a historical history from dictators to great politicians, but this place is also well known to musicians. Every year for the Festival of Lights there is a completely new city backdrop when the neighboring building is animated and illuminated with laser lights. Then there is also a lot going on in the forecourt in front of the Altes Museum when many people gather to experience these wonderful evenings in the right light.

The Altes Museum, located in the heart of Berlin, Germany, is a true testament to the rich cultural heritage and artistic treasures of the city. This neoclassical gem, designed by architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel and completed in 1830, houses an exceptional collection of ancient art and antiquities that is sure to captivate any history or art enthusiast. As you approach the Altes Museum, its stately columns and grand facade immediately command attention. The museum's architecture is a work of art in itself, a harmonious blend of classical aesthetics and 19th-century German architectural finesse. Its striking presence on Museum Island makes it a focal point of Berlin's cultural landscape.

The Old Museum of Berlin is, without a doubt, my favorite museum of all time. Being from Berlin myself, I know it very well and yet, every few months it drags me back. The Old Museum has a never-ending exhibition about ancient Greek and ancient Roman art, divided into two floors. It ranges from the early beginnings of Greece, has many depictions of Greek gods and mythology, gives you a beautiful view on daily life in ancient Greece and, on the second floor, continues with the Etruscan era in Italy, until it leads you into the Roman Empire, which also includes a small “Garden of Delights”, in which you can find some explicit depictions of ancient life. Statues of all sizes, coins, amphoras, kylixes, dishes and more are waiting for you here, offering you a total number of thousands of objects. And even I still find something new here and there, while the information tablets on every object and the writings on the walls in German and English language give you a lot of information about these long gone, yet so beautiful times. I have to admit that I am a lifelong fan of Amazons and even dedicated my own webpage to them. Therefore, my great highlight in the Old Museum is of course the life-sized statue of a Wounded Amazon, a beautiful copy of the Greek original by Praxiteles from 430 BC. There are also some other Amazon depictions, like an amphora on which Herakles is fighting with two Amazons, or a Roman mirror on the second floor, which includes a carving of Achilles fighting Queen Penthesilea. Especially impressive is also the giant rotunda of the Old Museum, in which you can find many different statues of Greek gods and goddesses, of which Artemis is my true favorite, along with Athena. I can only write this: If you own just one small piece of love for ancient Greek and Roman history, or if you just like ancient European art, the Old Museum of Berlin is an absolute must see for you. Just be advised that the museum keeps its doors closed on Monday. If you take your time and watch most of the objects closely, while also reading many of the information tablets and the information on the walls, a trip through this outstanding museum can take up to three hours. Yet, I can guarantee that it is a beautiful time, which you will never regret to have spent. You can also buy electronic tickets via the museum's website, so that you save time for your entry and I personally recommend you of doing so. I have shot all of those photos for my review on 10th October 2023, but please be advised that even these only give you a very small glimpse of the thousands of objects that await you within the Old Museum. Included are the statue of the Wounded Amazon, Athena, Artemis, Herakles, Herakles fighting two Amazons, a maenad, two Greek depictions of daily life, a Roman mirror with a carving of Achilles fighting Queen Penthesilea, a Roman girl playing with bones, a bust of Queen Cleopatra VII., a bust of Gaius Iulius Caesar and a statue of Livia Augusta.

One of the world’s great collections of Greek, Roman and Etruscan art, from vessels and vases to sculpture and architectural fragments, mosaic floors, painting, votives, jewelry, erotic art—everything! The museum building itself is perhaps the best example of 19th century architecture in the city and a strong contender for the city’s best building ÜBERHAUPT! A magnificent staircase up to the building’s prominent location on Museum Island is followed by an epic rotunda modeled on the Pantheon in Rome—coat check and tickets are pretty rustic but the collection shines and the display of art and artifacts still impresses with its spare, clean presentation. Unmissable.

One of Berlin's museums is Old Museum or Altes, this museum is a collection of antiques from the State Museum of Berlin. The old museum was built by the German architect Karl Friedrich Shingle between 1823 and 1830 in the neo-classical style to host the art collection of the Prussian royal family. This is a historical and protected building and one of the most prominent buildings in the style of neo-classicism and the peak of Shingle's works. The Old Museum was known as the Royal Museum until 1845 and was registered in the UNESCO world list in 1999. This museum underwent renovations in 2010-2011.

Schinkel's plans incorporated the Königliches Museum into an ensemble of buildings, which surround the Berliner Lustgarten (pleasure garden). The Stadtschloss in the south was a symbol of worldly power, the Zeughaus in the west represented military might, and the Berliner Dom in the east was the embodiment of divine authority. The museum to the north of the garden, which was to provide for the education of the people, stood as a symbol for science and art—and not least for their torchbearer: the self-aware bourgeoisie. For the front facing the Lustgarten, a simple columned hall in grand style and proportionate to the importance of the location would most certainly give the building character. The arrangement of the eighteen Ionic columns was effected by the Lustgarten. The portico was designed with a function in order to give the museum building an exterior befitting its site, in which the monuments can be placed.

Great museum about Greek, Roman and Etruscan civilisations. Thanks to this place of history, we have another great overview of the men who built the roots of european civilization. To sum up, it’s kind of the Louvre in Berlin but focused only on periods before Christ and right during the Roman Empire of the first centuries after Christ. A must see museum in Berlin !

(Translated by Google) The construction of the Altes Museum dates back to 1830 and is based on Karl Friedrich Schinkel's projects. The building is a fine example of neoclassicism, as well as the entire Museum Island on which it was erected. The initial idea was to host the entire real-time collection, which included works of art from classical times and civilizations far removed geographically, as well as even prehistoric. The initial name was, precisely, Königliches Museum (Royal Museum). (Original) La costruzione dell'Altes Museum risale al 1830 ed è basata sui progetti di Karl Friedrich Schinkel. One of the small Berlin museums, worth if you are interested in Ancient History, and especially Greek and Roman. The tour was quite dull, but not bad in general. A free audio-guide is available. The building itself is very beautiful.

Decent, and small exhibition compared to other museums in Berlin. I was expecting to see a lot more though, the grandeur building in the outside does not really reflect the inside.

One of the most amazing exhibitions of classic greek art and the most complete collection of arcaic greek sculptures I’ve ever seen. You can use the VisitBerlin tickets here, though you must book a time slot in their web before hand. Free German and English audio guides at the entrance. As in any other Berlin Museum, always buy/book your tickets at least an hour before closing time! Spectacular sculptures for nice pictures next to the front gate. Also, beautiful etruscan art and weaponry.

The Altes Museum is a listed building on the Museum Island in the historic centre of Berlin. Built from 1825 to 1830 by order of King Frederick William III of Prussia according to plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, it is considered as a major work of German Neoclassical architecture. It is surrounded by the Berlin Cathedral to the east, the Berlin Palace to the south and the Zeughaus to the west. Currently, the Altes Museum is home to the Antikensammlung and parts of the Münzkabinett.

Not the most famous museum on Museum Island and not the biggest, but the Greek section in particular is very well thought out and contains some amazing artifacts. Don't miss the rotunda in the centre . Thoroughly enjoyed my short visit here on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.

The main entrance it’s a great representation of the Greek architecture, big marble columns. Inside the museum you are welcomed with stunning marble pieces crafted by artists from the 400bc era, if you like history you will love this place. Lots of statues and vases, incredible to see such wonderful work. The museum is free if you have the metro ticket (you can but it at any station).

The Old Museum, also known as the Altes Museum, is a true gem in the heart of Berlin and one of the highlights of the city's Museum Island. It leaves visitors with a multitude of positive impressions due to its stunning architecture, rich historical collections, and captivating exhibitions. One of the first things that captivates visitors is the magnificent architecture of the Old Museum. Designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and completed in 1830, the building showcases neoclassical architecture at its finest. Its grand colonnaded facade, majestic dome, and symmetrical layout create a sense of elegance and harmony. The museum's exterior alone is a sight to behold and sets the stage for the remarkable treasures housed within. Upon entering the Old Museum, you are greeted by a spacious central hall known as the Rotunda. The Rotunda features a soaring dome, adorned with stunning frescoes and decorative motifs. This impressive space serves as a hub connecting different galleries and exhibitions within the museum. The Old Museum houses a vast collection of antiquities, particularly from ancient Greece and Rome. The artifacts on display range from intricately carved sculptures and statues to delicate pottery and exquisite jewelry. Each piece tells a story of ancient civilizations, offering insights into their art, culture, and way of life. The museum's collection is thoughtfully curated, providing a comprehensive overview of classical antiquity. The exhibition spaces within the Old Museum are designed to showcase the artifacts in a visually appealing and informative manner. The galleries are spacious, well-lit, and expertly arranged, allowing visitors to appreciate the intricate details and craftsmanship of each piece. The informative signage and multimedia displays provide context and enhance the understanding of the exhibited works. One of the highlights of visiting the Old Museum is the opportunity to see iconic artifacts, such as the famous Berlin Gold Hat, the Praying Boy sculpture, and the Market Gate of Miletus. These masterpieces not only reflect the artistic achievements of their respective periods but also hold historical and cultural significance. In addition to its permanent collection, the Old Museum also hosts temporary exhibitions that explore a variety of themes, artists, and time periods. These special exhibitions offer a chance to delve deeper into specific subjects and provide fresh perspectives on art and history. The Old Museum's location on Museum Island adds to its appeal. Surrounded by other renowned museums and cultural institutions, it forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors can easily explore multiple museums and immerse themselves in the rich cultural offerings of Berlin. In conclusion, the Old Museum Berlin is a treasure trove of ancient art and artifacts, housed within a magnificent architectural masterpiece. Its neoclassical beauty, rich collections, informative exhibitions, and prime location make it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts, art lovers, and anyone seeking a captivating cultural experience in Berlin.

This is Great place to explore the history of Greece, Rome and more in Berlin. The beautiful neoclassical building was rebuilt as all the city and its really fine. In front of it there is a green square where also the Berliner Dome Cathedral is set.

Great place to check out in Berlin. The entrance is as amazing as it's size, full of sculptures. At the time i visited there were not too much people, so from 13:00 until 16:00 is ok to visit. They have a package if you want to visit all the museums in the area, so keep in mind that before buying a one time entry ticket. Overall i enjoyed watching and reading all story behind these magnificent works, and surely will comeback if they have another exposition.

I'm not a fan of historical museum but since I bought the 3-day museum pass and this one was included and locate in Museum Island so why not. I went here during weekday but it is still very crowded at around noon, at 10am-11am there was no queue but definitely not after 11.30am Highly recommend you guys buy the Museum Pass though because you can skip the ticket line and directly into the museum (and take your audio guide) I don't think this museum require a time slot but some other museum in Museum Island do require one (recommended)
