The largest art gallery in the city and one of the best you can see. It has a large variety of sculptures and paintings of different styles and time periods. The quality and details of everything is amazing, and everything gives you a feeling of awe. The building itself has its own historical value and you can appreciate how the past events such as the war affected the structure and the building itself. The employees are very kind and willing to help and have knowledge of the are that is on display. Very much worth the visit of this museum and the surrounding museums nearby. If you are visiting the city, make sure you save a day to visit all of them.

The museum I enjoyed the most from the ones we visited on the museum island (The Panorama, Alte Nationalgalerie, Neues Museum, Altes Museum). It features an exquisite collection of paintings, and some statues and sculptures. I, in particular, liked some of the displayed works of Carl Spitzweg and Caspar David Friedrich. You can immerse yourself for several hours in the collection.

Huge museum with lots of beautiful paintings. We spent 2 hours there but couldn’t browse all the exhibits. However, people kept getting too close to the exhibits and the alarm kept going out.🤣

Really impressive collection of romantic and impressionist art from German and international artists, there were countless artworks from famous artists like Adolph Menzel. We spent approximately 2 hours here and had a good time.

Exquisite collection of paintings and sculptures. Very well selected artworks from French and German impressionists, symbolist and post impressionist, artists such as Camille Pizarro, Cezanne, Monet, Manet, Gauguin, Max Lieberman, share different rooms in the Museum. If you are an art lover in search of excellent exhibited paintings, this is a must for you in Berlin. The architecture of the museum is another amazing spectacle. Don't miss the dome, you will learn incredible history when you see this decorated ceiling! Would you like to visit this place with me? I'm a tour guide in Berlin! Click on the link in my BIO!

(Translated by Google) The five world-famous museums on the Museum Island in Berlin-Mitte are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1999 and are one of the main sights in the German capital. At this point I would like to give only a few observations on the Old National Gallery. First of all, it should be mentioned that the gallery was built from 1862 to 1876 in the style of classicism and neo-renaissance and is home to a large, impressive collection of paintings and sculptures from the 19th century - for those of us who like the art of the 19th century . On the front of the National Gallery there is an equestrian statue of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Most of the rooms in the interior are large, bright and flooded with light and thus represent a clear contrast to many of the paintings on display. In the rear area of the ground floor, otherwise filled with sculptures , we discovered the famous paintings by Adolph Menzel, the flute concert of Frederick the Great in Sanssouci and the world-famous painting Eisenwalzwerk, which represents the pioneering industrial revolution in Germany. On the first floor there are paintings and sculptures of romanticism, realism and impressionism from the 19th century. These include some works by famous French people such as Monet, Manet, Renoir, Degas, Cézanne and Rodin, but the collection essentially contains works by German romantics and impressionists, such as Carl Spitzweg, the Berlin painter Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth. On the second floor you can see paintings from the period immediately after the French Revolution and the beginning of restoration, i.e. the romanticism of the early 19th century. At this level, the paintings by Caspar David Friedrich are my absolute favorites. Essentially we find 19th century German art in the Alte Nationalgalerie; The key issue was answering the question: How do you feel about the industrial revolution? The artists answered this question in their own way: either they relentlessly portrayed the reality of the groundbreaking revolution, as in the iron rolling mill of Adolph Menzel, and this was by far the minority of artists, since there was hardly any in Germany, the industrial one Revolution. Or, on the other hand, they have focused on the seclusion and beauty of nature in a transfiguring and romanticizing way and saw humans as observers in front of the greatness of creation, away from the revolutionary social developments, even at a time when calm was the first civic duty. The pictures from Spitzweg to Liebermann represent the view of the small section of the immediate living conditions surrounding the artist, such as: B. the room, the garden and the street in the small town, beautifully and precisely painted, but everything in small sections, limited in perspective and depressingly narrow. I noticed how the paintings of German romanticism of the 19th century are all kept very dark, undoubtedly beautifully painted, but sometimes quite dark without a signal of departure. Even the German Impressionists, whom I love so much, were essentially observers of a limited environment, very different from the French Impressionists, who through the power of colors represented light, space, beauty and truth and revolutionized it in perspective - the German Impressionism stands for the old, the French Impressionism for the departure into the modern. There is no greater contrast among German painters of the 19th century than Menzel's iron rolling mill versus Spitzweg's Mönch am Meer. To put it simply: what remains is in the Old National Gallery, light and departure in the Getty in the mountains of Los Angeles. Nevertheless, everything is very worth seeing in Berlin, but you need a lot of time in the Old National Gallery on Museum Island, nice that it exists.

The Old National Gallery is a great way to spend 4 hours or so and marvel at many of the exhibits. Need to join a short queue to hand in bags and coats first. The audio commentary brings some of the displayed artworks into focus and there are strategically placed, comfortable seating points to admire the exhibits. The works of Adolph Menzel were one of the highlights for me.

If you are looking for a beautiful and impressive example of neoclassical architecture in Berlin, the Alte National Gallery is definitely worth a visit. The building facade has been carefully maintained close to its original grandeur with large columns and intricate carvings, adding to the regal atmosphere. Inside, the gallery houses an impressive selection of artwork from the 19th century - from romantic landscape to neoclassical sculptures. The layout is simple and easy to navigate, and right at the lowest floor house a small cafe and gift shop. Single entry ticket cost 12 euros. Make sure you purchase a ticket first before stowing away any coats or bags in the lockers or cloakroom.

If you are interested in paintings, this museumis strongly recommended, all the paintings are well categorized in nature, self portraits and so on, the building is really beautiful and well-spaced, but unfortunately second floor was closed which belongs to Monet, but 1st and 3rd was open and we really enjoyed.

Definitely book in advance. It will save you so much time especially because the museum is also pretty big and you will need min 2h inside, probably 3h or 4h if you spend more time analysing the art. The wait outside seems to be around 20 to 30 min if you don’t have a ticket. The tour guide is very useful but it has about 2 min per painting and although it selects 1 painting/ room it will take much longer if you also go through them. I visited during the Secession expo and it was very informative and interesting. The Klimt paintings were amazing.

We visited during the Museum Sunday which is an event that happens every first Sunday of the month and got into the museum for free. The museum has three levels and there is only one entrance. However there are no elevators to go to each floor. Each floor also focuses on a specific era in art. There is a free audio guide that helps in describing the most important pieces of art in the gallery. When we visited there was the Klimt Exhibition on Secession. The collection is extensive and includes famous artists such as Klimt and Monet. It is worth noting that this was the last day of the Klimt exhibition. But there are still some of his paintings in the gallery. Overall the gallery was good and worth a visit

Alte Nationalgalerie, opened in 1876, is one of the other museums on Museum Island. This museum is dedicated to displaying neoclassical sculptures and paintings designed between 1815 and 1848, as well as impressionist and early modernist works.

Very nice collection of paintings and sculptures from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Particular attention to German and Berlin painters, a welcome touch if you want to discover something about the local history of art. Very good collection of famous French painters of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, incl. Monet and similar usual suspects 😉. Spectacular hall dedicated to Caspar Friedrich, an old favourite of mine. Original canvases of the Monk near the Sea and other famous ones. €10 entrance, free garderobe, nice shop, mask obligatory (early August 2020).

Planned by Friedrich August Stüler on behalf of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV from 1862 onwards , the Alte Nationalgalerie was executed by Johann Heinrich Strack in the classicism and neo-renaissance style until 1876. It is currently home to paintings and sculptures from the 19th century from the collection of the "National Gallery". The building of the "Alte-Nationalgalerie" combines architectural elements of different building types. The gable facade and the surrounding half-columns are borrowed from a temple , the monumental staircase from a castle or theater and the attached apse from a church . In this combination, the building should architecturally emphasize the unity of nation, history and art.

It was one of the best museums I've visited. I spent 3 hours inside. The artworks were mindblowing. I even dropped a tear when I was watching statue of the girl serving drink. The most unique thing I realized in the museum was that it was incredibly easy to go around. Most of the times, it is too hard to systematichally see all of the artworks in the museum. However, in this place, they devided the parts and put the direction signs very professionally and successfully. It was very easy to find your way and I did not have any anxiety about if I missed any part. Good job guys! PS. on the 3rd floor, very unusually, they ask to see your ticket again. I had some trubble there because I threw my ticket after I showed it in the beginning, but we somehow solved it.

I loved this museum, the amount of romantic paintings from the 1800s is astonishing. 🏛️ Some great artworks from Caspar David Friedrich, Karl Friedrich Schinkel who is a master of lighting and of painting beautiful landscapes and also some realism pieces from Adolph Menzel. 🖼️ The best thing about this museum is that it's not stolen art, objects and artifacts from other countries but instead paintings from German artists. 🇩🇪 The Paul Gauguin exhibition was also really interesting, you learn a lot about France's colonization of Polynesia and the way Gauguin pictured it and what he thought of it. 🏝️ If there is one museum not to miss on Museuminsel in Berlin, it's this one. ⭐

Absolutely stunning museum, not only the works of both statues and paintings but the architecture of the building itself is just mind blowing! A very impressive experience to say the least. The tickets are quite confusing, you don't have to purchase tickets in advance, just get in line. Although you could buy a ticket dedicated to a specific time slot, allowing you to pass by the queue and not get in line to purchase tickets inside.

Impressive place. Lots of interesting and famous works in here, as well as lots of history. Is not very big, but you will be happy with everything you see here. There is also a Cafeteria/Library here where you can relax, drink something, read a book, buy one, or check the arts they have for sale. The second floor which is part of the exposition is not available due to some reconstruction, and according to the personnel i talked to, it won't me reopen until 2025. So if you want the full package, you will have to wait a bit more.

Me and my mother were both at the “Secessions Klimt, Stuck, Liebermann” exhibition of Berlin’s Old National Gallery, which lasted from 23rd June 2023 until 22nd October 2023. Although being from Berlin myself, I was never inside the building before and I was really amazed by its marble white beauty that you can find inside. The building itself is already a great piece of white marble-like art, especially its stairways with the red carpet, making you feel as if you have fallen back in time, although I have to admit that it was sometimes hard to shoot good pictures, due to the different fall of light in the rooms. Of course, we did not just go to the special exhibition, but have visited all of the other rooms as well and I was actually very surprised that I have seen the originals of some very well-known paintings, for example the painting of the Grimm brothers, as I have always believed that they must be exhibited somewhere else. I also love the exhibition of the sculptures. If you love classic art and find yourself in Berlin, you really should give the Old National Gallery a try and I am sure that you won’t be disappointed. I would like to advise you to buy the tickets online and print them, so you can get right inside the museum, instead of having to wait in line, although you need to place your bags in special lockers, for which you need 1 Euro, which you can retrieve when opening the locker again. You also should come early, best is when the museum opens at 10 AM, because later you may have to wait outside, until the guards decide that enough visitors have left the gallery, to allow new visitors in. The only negative aspect I was able to find is the fact that the guards, which are not part of the gallery’s staff itself, but are actually the staff from private security companies, are not capable of using English very well and if someone asks them something in English, they always respond with a mix of German and English, which, for a museum of Germany’s capital that receives thousands of international guests every single day, is just embarrassing. I have shot all of those pictures on 31st August 2023. Please be advised that some of those have been shot inside the special exhibition “Secessions Klimt, Stuck, Liebermann” and won’t be available to be seen in the Old National Gallery anymore, if you visit it after the 22nd October 2023. This includes the figurine “Amazon On Horseback”, as well as the paintings “Fighting Amazon”, “Circe” and “The Sin”, which all have been made by the German artist Franz von Stuck, as well as “Pallas Athena” by the German artist Gustav Klimt.

If you went to Berlin, you should buy a museum card and visit many museums. There are quite large and really important arts in this museum. There are arts that make you think, in the works that take you on a journey of history. Although not gloomy, this museum is truly lively and wonderful. Everyone is advised to go and see. I can say that the decoration of the place is beautiful and stylish.

The Gallery was just an AMAZING EXPERIENCE. I was astonished by amount of beautiful paintings and statues. The Gallery is HUUUGE. There are 3 floors of exhibitions and there’s a little souvenir shop on -1 floor. The exhibitions were breathtaking, i definitely recommend to come here. The souvenir shop is tiny but really cute, prices are kinda high though. You can buy books, chocolate, postcards and even drink coffee there. Museum caretakers were nice and smiled:) A big thank You to a lady at the ticket place for helping me :)) definitely a must visit in Berlin. 10/10.

Like the other museums in the famous island, the Alte Nationalgalerie is well organized and treats it's collection with respect. With regards to the collection, one has to remember that this is mostly a German-only collection, but it does include some pieces from neighboring European countries. As far as the ambiance goes, the museum is clean and flows well from room to room, but the lighting of the pieces is a clear place for improvement.

  • 3/5 Jukka S. 4 years ago on Google
It's indeed mostly paintings. Some sculptures. Quite a lot of content in 3 floors. If you're not especially a fan of paintings and not familiar with the German painters, then it might be mostly wasted, like it was for us. Would've been nice to have some medieval German objects and artifacts, but this is not the museum for those.

Friedrich August Stüler began working on a design for the building in 1863, based on a sketch by King Frederick William IV of Prussia. Two years and two failed plans later, his third proposal was finally accepted. Stüler died before planning was completed and Carl Busse handled the remaining details in 1865. In 1866, by order of the king and his cabinet, the Kommission für den Bau der Nationalgalerie (Commission for the construction of the national gallery) was created. Ground was broken in 1867 under the supervision of Heinrich Strack. In 1872 the structure was completed and interior work began. The opening took place on March 22, 1876, in the presence of the Kaiser. Because of the building's modern construction using brick and iron, it was widely believed to be fireproof. The exterior and outer staircase were constructed of Triassic sandstone from Nebra. At the opening the collection was still relatively small. Next to Wagener's collection, originally, was a display of cartoons by Peter von Cornelius that had been bequeathed to the Prussian government. The initial objective of the gallery was to collect contemporary, primarily Prussian art, as Berlin did not then have any repository of modern art.

(Translated by Google) You can tell the "Alte Nationalgalerie" in its floor plan the years of construction 1862 - 1876. The separate rooms in the side aisles are sometimes too heavy, which is repeated on the ground floor. It is not an advantage for the visitor to show everything the inventory has to offer. The curators would sometimes give the recipient more space for his adaptation of the works according to the motto: "less is more". Still recommended. (Original) Man merkt der "Alten Nationalgalerie" in ihrer Raumaufteilung die Erbauungjahre 1862 - 1876 an. Awesome paintings. They have built them self a straight style and stuck with it. Unlike most other museums where you're given paintings from 1400 up to 1980. Like the Kebab shop that also does Curry, Pizza and Sushi. Everything a little but nothing specialised. The personal is very friendly and helpful too. You'll better plan for 3 hours min. And don't forget about the audio guide at the main desk. The audio guide gives you more than the obvious of what you can see in the paintings anyway.

Alte covers my favorite period in painting so I'm always happy to go. Most of the works, besides their famous Monet, were completely different than last time I visited 5 years ago so that was nice. There's 3 floors with an elevator and a basement gift show so it's not a huge museum, very navigable. A lot more attendants than I'm used to. My fiancee got fussed at for bringing a bag in which someone called us out on at ticketing and didn't seem well signaged, so that was a small bummer.

Estheticly pure and beautiful one to one with the romantic German art. Each room creates a different experience. A wonderful feast for the eyes and the soul. Invites to be revisited and rediscovered. Highly recommend.

Very impressed by the extensive collection of paintings by various European painters, especially the awe-inspiring works of Anton von Werner and Adolph Menzel. Couldn’t get enough of their techniques and surreal attention to detail! The museum was also nicely laid out and easy to navigate. Could easily have spent 2-3h here wandering around, getting lost in the beauty of art that harkens back to a bygone era. Highly recommended. Little to no queue on a weekday afternoon as well.

An amazing variety of art from neoclassical sculpture to French impressionism - and not to mention the museum feels really well-ran as well. I love that the audioguides are at no extra cost and yet very informative. Sounds simple but this sometimes isn't the case. Definitely reserve tickets online and you will have a seamless experience!

It’s a very large museum with 3 different levels - which contain predominantly paintings but also some sculptures from the 1800s - one should ideally plan multiple visits to the museum in order to have sufficient time to be spent on each individual piece of art - as the museum offers a large amount of paintings etc. I was recently there to see the exhibition about the Secession from the conservative into a freedom of expression; highly recommended

This was a beautiful visit, the collection is amazing, focusing on German artists from the 19th century and they were the best, Adolph Menzel, Caspar David Friedrich, Karl Schinkel and others. I also got a chance to visit the Secession exhibition and really enjoyed it. Danke Schön!

Kind of disappointing. Glad the Klimt exhibition was free and included with the regular ticket but wow is this art gallery small. 4 floors- yes but small. Not any noteworthy artworks on display. Overpriced shop but I still bought a Klimt magnet.

Extensive range of paintings and sculptures, particularly enjoyed the landscapes here. Easy flow to follow around the exhibits and a beautiful building. Walked in on a Wednesday without a ticket, no lines and quickly bought a ticket at the counter.
