The Neues Museum ("New Museum") is a museum in Berlin, Germany, located to the north of the Altes Museum (Old Museum) on Museum Island. It was built between 1843 and 1855 according to plans by Friedrich August Stüler, a student of Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The museum was closed at the beginning of World War II in 1939, and was heavily damaged during the bombing of Berlin. The rebuilding was overseen by the English architect David Chipperfield. The museum officially reopened in October 2009 and received a 2010 RIBA European Award and the 2011 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture. Exhibits include the Egyptian and Prehistory and Early History collections, as it did before the war. The artifacts it houses include the iconic bust of the Egyptian queen Nefertiti. Both as a part of the Museum Island complex and as an individual building, the museum testifies to the neoclassical architecture of museums in the 19th century. With its new industrialized building procedures and its use of iron construction, the museum plays an important role in the history of technology. Since the classical and ornate interiors of the Glyptothek and of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich were destroyed in World War II, the partly destroyed interior of the Neues Museum ranks among the last remaining examples of interior museum layout of this period in Germany.

One of the best museums in the world. The collections are amazing but wat really gets me is the magnificent building. At the same time you are in old buildings with bully holes from the war, combined with majestic new modern design of the new parts!! Avoid the cafeteria run by a nasty old bat! Get tickets in advance because you get a time slot for entry!

August 2022 • incredible museum! Loved the artifacts from Troy and all of the Egyptian history here as well. They have the bust of Nefertiti on display which was awesome to see. Timed tickets are required for this museum, so plan ahead and buy online!

A very vast collection of historic relics of the region . We were also very fortunate to be present to witness relics for Rome and Egypt. Such an informative display and we took about 4 hours to view most and not all of the displays. Wish we had more time. By the way, make sure you book your ticket on line at least a day in advance not to be disappointed. Don't try going there without one . 👍👌

Reserve your tickets online and also the time slots before going. You can take your masks off there and leave your bag outside in the locker. No water allowed inside and there is wc in the museum. Very nice and highly recommended

One of the best museums of antique art. Egyptian collection is impressive. Building as it it also interesting and has story behind, which they try to tell you from the text on the newly builded walls. I was enjoying several hours my trip through ages but will come back to explore more.

One of the most amazing museums I’ve been to, the most popular pieces are Nefertity and Berlin Gold Hat, which are wonderful in detailes, but so many pieces from Egypt, if you are interested in History this place is recommended, there is audio guide available and its very easy to use and useful.

One of my favourite museum on a Museum Island. There are very beautiful and various exhibits. There are collections of Egyptian art and antique collections. There you can find a statue of Nefertiti, sarcophagus, statues, ancient wall drawings and many other things. Museum is quite big, so plan a bit of time for it. It is very difficult to manage all museums from museum island in one day.

Amazing experience, totally worth the price! Ancient Egypt enthusiasts will be extremely pleased by the display in this museum. Especially, if you have a soft spot for Akhenaton and Nefertiti.

This museum focuses on Egyptian artifacts as well as a small collection of artifacts in Berlin and some pre historic era. The major display is the Bust of Nefertiti which has whole room by herself. No flash photographs are allowed except room of Nefertiti. Repurchase ticket is recommended although you will still have to line up for the entrance. Expect 15-30 minutes line up. Bags must be put in storage. Coat can in storage but if not must be worn at all time. There are lots of chairs to seat.

If you are into Egyptology, then this is your place. It is absolutely crammed with artefacts, the star attraction being the Nefertiti bust. There is a free audio guide which is very random and fragmented and needs an overhaul. As seems to be a recurring theme in the best German establishments, the staff would benefit from some kind of public relations training. However this doesn’t detract from the beautiful interior of the building and restoration efforts.

One of my favorites places, and i think if not my favorite, one of my favorites Museum. These pictures speaks for themselves. No need to give feedback, reviews or introductions. Just being able to see Nefertiti's Bust was a dream come true. Just that, is enough to give the museum 4 star, but there are some many wonderful things to see besides this. Enjoy when you visit. Oh, and before i forget, go 3 hours before having lunch, or just after your lunch, this museum is so big, that it took me around 3 hours to see 90% of it. So be prepared.

The interiors of the building is as fascinating as the exhibits! I truly enjoyed the variant architecture and interior styles of each room. It has a wide range of ancient Egyptian antiquities. The time machine experience is also a unique experince making the prehistoric era more tangible. I would say give the museum a time of 2-3 hours for a good visiting time.

My visit to the Neues museum in Berlin was unforgettable. The rich history and cultural treasures are captivating. Ghetto museum’s collection is nothing short of remarkable, spanning millennia of human civilization and showcasing some of the world’s most renowned artifacts. With no doubt, the highlight of my visit was the opportunity to see the iconic bust of Nefertiti up close. Although one negative aspect was not being allowed to take pictures of this masterpiece. The museum should reconsider its policy regarding this issue. Each exhibit is expertly curated under perfect lighting conditions with valuable insights into the art. The Neues Museum is clearly committed to preservation and restoration as everythingis impeccably preserved allowing visitors to connect with the past. The museum’s architecture itself is a work of art, seamlessly blending historic elements with modern design to create a space that is both visually stunning and intellectually stimulating. Overall, my time at the Neues museum was nothing short of extraordinary and I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in history, art or culture.

Giant and very impressive Egyptological museum with so many beautiful pieces and stories about archeology. You need at least a couple of hours or more to see it all. The place was definitely worth the entrance but be sure to buy tickets and book a time-slot to visit. The only thing that kinda disappointed me was the toilets which lacked proper ventilation (because of the smell).

Amazing museum for everyone. The misery of the Egypt and mix of cultures dives into the infinite space of emotions and understanding the nature of those times. Yo will find a lot of artifacts you have seen at school at books. Nefertiti head is wonderful. The part of the museum is not renovated, that allows you to understand how people are struggling to preserve the history amd the culture.

The museum had a functional lay out that enables guests to wander about but not feel lost. The audio guides need a bit of an update as a lot of the numbered displays have no audio accompaniment. There were numerous guards posted but do not mind them as they know how to keep the guests feel welcome. We were able to see the main feature, Nefertiti.

Went to see the Photographic Memories – Nubia around 1900 exhibition were in the website says; "For the first time this precious trove of historical photographs is presented in the exhibition" when you get to the room the photograph aren't exhibit. Just a digital print of few of them on a collage (see picture), only at the description in the room explains that original pictures can't be exhibit because of preservation purposes. I don't understand why this is promoted as a photography exhibition when none of them (originals, only bad digital printing are presented). The details on the promotion of the exhibiting is misleading.

Way bigger than you can expect. Quite a big collection of heavily focused on Egypt and BC era. The famous Nefertiti is at the second floor - no photos on that area. So many tombs, so less mummies -if your kid is expecting to see some, like mine, he/she can get upset a bit. Almost all informations about exhibited artifacts are written in German so you can seriously consider to pick a translator at the entrance.

Wonderful museum. And such great architecture that combines a kaputt museum with after war rebuilding. Collection is also great, especially the Egyptian one. It’s also nice to see a museum that displays differently than in the old days, but the problem with today’s technology is that if fails from time to time and then the TV monitor is dark🥴.

Huge museum with 4 floors and thousands of displayed itens. The majority is from ancient Egypt, but there is also Roman and a specific part with itens from over 20000 years. Definitely worth the visit, you can spend 3-4 hours there and not be tired with all the itens. Also, the Nerfertiti bust is beautiful, and worth the visit by itself (unfortunally you can't take pictures of it).

Amazing collection of historical Egyptian, Roman and Greek artefacts. Of course the bust of Nefertiti is the highlight and spectacular to see in reality (but no photos allowed). Although can’t help but feel that these treasures should be returned to the places and people from whom they were taken, or at least some of the tourism value €€€ shared back to them…

A great exhibition of ancient pieces on display over 4 easily navigable floors. The entry price is very reasonable, and the building itself is very interesting. The exhibit primarily focuses on ancient Egypt, but also explores more recent time periods.

I have been to this museum twice and enjoyed it on both occasions. So fabulous to see the bust of Nefertiti alongside thousands of other Egyptian treasures - it has to be one of the finest collections in the world. Also fascinating to see the impact of WWII on the building the museum is housed in. Free tickets on Museum Sunday, no queue and complimentary audioguides make it even better.

Personally I loved this museum the most among all the museums in the island. So many collections from Egypt and it’s almost overwhelming! We spent 5 hours here with kids. The Nofretete bust and Berlin Golden Hat were our favourite! We purchased tickets online in advance but we still needed to queue up around 20mins to get in.

Wow this was such a vast and impressive collection. There so much to see here and ideal to visit during a drizzly day. There are items from bronze ages, Egyptian etc I would definitely recommend putting half a day aside for this. We came on a weekday so didn't have to queue to get in etc I imagine it gets super busy the weekend so would recommend purchasing online in those instances.

Wow! The Neues Museum is absolutely fantastic! It's definitely worth every penny. There's so much to see, especially if you love Egyptian artifacts like me. The Nefertiti bust is a must-see, and it's even more amazing in person. The museum is well-lit and all the exhibits are clearly labeled, with information available in English. Plus, there's a great gift shop! Make sure to book your tickets online in advance though. The building itself is stunning, with each room decorated beautifully to match the themes of the exhibits. And don't miss the time machine experience—it really brings history to life. I'd recommend giving yourself 2-3 hours to explore. Overall, it's a huge museum with treasures from around the world, and I can't wait to go back! Plus, on Museum Sundays, you can get in for free with no lines and complimentary audio guides. A solid museum experience!

Excellent, worth every penny! Almost more than can be seen in one visit, the museum is packed full of Egyptian artifacts, as well as other treasures and special exhibits. The most famous crowd-drawer is the Nefertiti bust (unfortunately no photos are allowed. Those I've posted are photos of postcards), and i was elated to see it in real life. Amazing. The exhibits are well lit and labelled, and all information is also available in English. There's extensive papyrus displays, sarcophagi, figures, textiles and more. The building itself is beautiful and well decorated, keeping with the themes of the rooms. There's a terrific gift shop as well. Can highly recommend!!!

A huge museum with many fascinating artefacts from around the world. Of particular interest is the sculpture of Nefertiti 's head which is beautiful. There are carvings from 3,000BC onwards, Busts of Homer, Aristotle, Plato. It would be easy to spend days here. The building itself is extraordinary with frescos, marble pillars, arched ceilings, moulding portraying people fleeing the mount Vesuvius eruption which buried Pompeii. So much to see!

Too many people wanting to see Nefertiti (understandable!) but all in all, enjoyable experience. We were a bit confused without the audio guide but we made a choice and still learned a lot and liked the exhibits.

  • 5/5 Theodor van N. 4 years ago on Google
Had a great but to short experience here. There is more than a day worth of information available, for which everyone is able to pick his or her amount of info. The audio guides are highly recommendable as they provide additional highlights and always provide another perspective into the matter. Last but not least: the sight of Nefertiti is breath taking, the replicas cannot be compared with the original. Fortunately there is a bronze replica in the same room, that you can touch, which makes the whole experience more sensible and available to visually impaired.

A fascinating museum if you're interested in Egyptology and even if not as the architecture of the building itself is superb. Innovatively renovated - due to WW2 damage - the internal spaces created and the brilliant juxtaposition of clean cut modernism with the museum's grand history is truly inspiring. Shrapnel damage can still be seen on some walls. An important reminder of the destruction and the reality of war, yet in a totally uplifting space. (A shame then that the manner of most of the staff was over-officious !)

Moreover, the Neues Museum is an important monument in the history of construction and technology. With its various iron constructions, it is the first monumental building of Prussia to consistently apply new techniques made possible by industrialization. As a further innovation, a steam engine was used for the first time in construction in Berlin. Among other things, it was used to ram pilings into the building ground. The soft, spongy soil around the River Spree means that buildings in the central area of Berlin require deep foundations.

(Translated by Google) An impressive house and a really great collection. Unfortunately, the presentation is very dignified and traditional. Showcases, read the text and you're done. Very quickly boring and unexciting for children / teenagers. Even the beautiful Nefertiti won't tear it out. Definitely recommended for adults for families rather less. What a shame, there are great examples from Scandinavian countries of how museums can be designed to be great, appealing and really tangible. Fascinating museum—not so much because of the artifacts housed there but rather because of the design of the museum itself. The redesign by David Chipperfield is exceptional and a wonder to behold—each room is thoughtfully imagined. While this museum will definitely interest those looking for ancient Egyptian items, it will also be of interest to students and admirers of architecture.

An absolutely beautiful museum! Beautifully redone by David Chipperfield. The attention to detail in the construction of the museum makes it a wonderful place to visit for architecture enthusiasts and students as well as people seeking time in a wonderful gallery. In October, the exit was very strange and it felt like you were being pushed into a back alley. I'm sure it will be different when the new construction is completed.

This is such an amazing place that it is hard to describe why it is amazing. Maybe because of the HUGE collection of items from Egyptians, Romans, Greeks, Vikings, Assyrians, and many others. Maybe because it is so big that you easily get lost in one of it's four floors. Or maybe just because the museum looks so good, with very well decorated rooms. I recommend this to everyone who wants to get a glimpse on the history of mankind, from a few thousand years BC to a few hundred years ago. And if you are really into Ancient Egypt you should not skip this place if you visit Berlin.

Yeah, as you guessed - translated in English, it means "New Museum". But, it isn't as 'new' as you think. Built on behalf of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV between 1843 and 1855 in the classicism and neo-renaissance style, it is regarded as the main work of Friedrich August Stüler. It is the most visited museum in the Museumsinsel, closely followed by the Pergamon Museum. After the destruction in the Second World War and the decline in the GDR era, it was restored in a simplified form by David Chipperfield in 1999–2009 . It is currently home to the Egyptian Museum and the Papyrus Collection , the Museum of Prehistory and Early History and part of the Antique Collection. It's main attraction? The Bust of Nefertiti, which we've all seen in our history books - at least once in our lives, which was likely manufactured between 1353 and 1336 BCE and was later excavated by the German Orient Society in 1912. Photography or Videography inside the hall housing the bust, is strictly prohibited and even activating any device emitting EM waves near it, is forbidden. So, I managed to take some shots from far away but the sheer elegance of the statue can stun anyone. :)

The museum tickets need to be prebooked and for a weekend you certainly need to book in advance. If you're organised there is the option of a ticket to cover all the museums on Museum Island over 1 or 3 days I think. The Neues museum was fantastic, almost as good as the British Museum with a huge amount of Egyptian and classical civilization artifacts and an eclectic mix of Celtic, Bronze Age, Merovingian and assorted medieval stuff, mixed in with prehistoric items, on the top floor. There were an excessive number of guards, about one to every eight visitors, which felt a bit strange. There was plenty of information in English and the obligatory gift shop too. We spent around 2 hours inside although by the top floor we were on information overload. Entrance was €12.

Probably the most beautiful museum in the city. The building itself is a huge part of the experience with it's award-winning architecture! The exhibits are huge and the audio commentary make for a complete and informative tour. Finally, the amazing Nefertiti bust is just mesmerizing. A must stop!

Good collections However Navigating around was a bit more confusing that it needed to be. Descriptions we're mostly in German so it was hard to understand. They keep it super warm inside so make sure to leave all your jackets and hoodies by the coat check , just go in with a t-shirt cuz they won't allow you to have anything in your hands so you'll burn up for hours in there.

Very nice museum if you are fan of Egypt History! During covid, you need to book in advance (one or to days before) on their website, like most museums in Berlin.

The museum is quite impressive and the items interesting. It's a bit labyrinth-like to maneuver, but nothing too difficult. Nefertiti is a definite must-see. Personally the pharaohs and all Egypt-related seemed more interesting, but there are lots of European stuff also.

What an experience! The exhibits are countless and positioned in a serial way so that you don't miss anything. Audioguides are available for free. It takes 1,5 to 2 hours to see everything without rushing.

This is a must visit place when in Berlin. It brings you back into history, culture and many more from the ancient Egypt to the Roman Empire and many more. Never forget to make a booking online and make sure you dedicate at least half a day to really enjoy this magnific place. You will live inside history

Incredible museum located on museum island. Well worth the visit as there was tons to see. The layout is a bit confusing though. We were trying to get from the 1st floor to the 3rd floor, and a female staff member ushered us out of the exit instead. I think she just misunderstood what we were asking because of the language barrier (which is on me). That was a bit disappointing, because there was more we wanted to see before we left. Besides that, what we did see was absolutely incredible, and we will definitely come back next time we are in Berlin to get the full experience. I highly recommend if you are planning on visiting Museum Island!

The New Museum has plenty of different exhibitions. For example, there is an Egyptian exhibition on the ground floor and an exhibition about the pre-historical age on the top floor. In here you can also find the popular bust of Queen Nefertiti, although you are not allowed to make pictures inside the small room, while at the same time you can make pictures of the also very popular Berlin Gold Hat. But don’t be sad, because the room that you have to enter before you reach the actual room with the bust of Queen Nefertiti offers plenty of small statues and heads of the same Queen. My personal highlight is the beautiful stairway hall, which contains on its right side the plaster cast replicas of the Amazon battle friezes, that have been found on the remains of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the seven world wonders. Yet, although there are a few pieces from ancient Rome and Greece to be found in the museum as well, real lovers of those two ancient cultures better head to the Old Museum. The New Museum also has a short underground tunnel, which connects it with the James Simon Gallery. Just remember that the museum is entirely closed on Monday. Leaving your backpack and jacket is also not a problem, since the James Simon Gallery, in which you can also buy tickets for the New Museum, offers lockers, in which you just have to throw one Euro inside and close it with a key. Obviously, when you open the locker again, the Euro will be returned to you. We have spent a total of three hours inside the museum, together with the James Simon Gallery, and being from Berlin myself I can truly recommend a visit to you, especially if you love ancient Egypt and the pre-historical times. I have shot the pictures on 7th July 2022.

Good exhibition, but not the most impressive collection on Ancient Egypt. The museum itself is beautiful. Nefertiti was the highlight of the whole visit, unfortunately you cannot take pictures of her.

In this museum they have a lot of interesting material regarding Egypt, Rome and other Ancient civilizations. But the most relevant things are regarding Ancient Egypt. We were impressed by the good amount of interesting materials as well as the relevant figures of the Egyptology (f.e: Nefertiti). 100% recommended as one of the best museums in the world. I would suggest visiting it in different days to get a deeper insight 😇 I recommend buying the tickets online.

I have visited many museum all around the world but that one is definitely one of the best museums . The collections are amazing but what really gets me is the magnificent building and ambience matching the exhibitions. Highlight of the visit is the bust of Nefertiti. Absolutely in love.

Excellent museum, while collection is not British Museum level, it is still quite good. The Nefertiti bust is in a special alcove (photography forbidden), the lighting highlights the beauty of the sculpture. Numerous artifacts are displayed on each floor and well laid out. If you are lucky when you get there there should be a short queue for the tickets. 14€ for adults, children under a certain age are free (my son is 13, and got in for free). You are required to check your coats and place any bags in a free locker (you will need a 1 or 2€ coin for this, don’t loose the key). There are a few museum shops in the building. You can get some publications in English and there are free one page guides also in English. Well worth the visit, and if you take the U5, the station has an Egyptian inspired roof over the tracks (blue with LED stars)

The first thing that catches your eye as you go inside is the vast space and the architectural style which is so different then many other museums in Europe. It had good facilities like a cloak room so you do not have to carry your stuff and can be free while enjoying the displays. They also have self guided audio tour which is included in ticket and is a great thing to avail. It is a great place to learn about Egyptian history and culture. My son who is 8 years also enjoyed this museum a lot. The best artifact was the golden hat, truely a majestic ancient piece of workmanship and history plus mysteries of astronomy. And do not miss their gift shop to see amazing collection of books and unique stationary items. When in Berlin, do try to see this museum

We decided to visit museum island at the first Sunday of the month so the tickets were free. We couldn’t find tickets online so we came right at the spot and they have tickets to give it to us. You need around two hours to visit whole museum if you don’t take audio guide. If you do take audio guide, you will need a lot of more time. some very important pieces of art are held here. Taking photos is allowed almost everywhere. Museum also has some interactive parts so it can be interesting for children. The exhibit that is in this museum. It’s dedicated to Egyptian history period mostly and Roman empire some parts. What was really nice to see is that this museum is in old building, like old castle, and museum didn’t destroy first and second floor, parts of that castle, but they incorporated it into a museum exhibit as pieces of art.

As someone who is really into Egyptology, this is a must go museum. As you will see, one of the most unique pieces that was stolen from Egypt. But yet it something great to see. Nefertiti the beauty icon

If you go to Berlín, visiting the Neues Museum at the Museum Island is a MUST. The collections they have are awesome but the rock star is the bust of Nefertiti, it's unbelievable. Stand and see it in front of you, it's totally different to see pictures in books or magazines. The Egyptian collection is huge, mainly focused on Amarna's age, lots of great papyrus, statues and stellas. The famous Stella of Akhenaten, Nefertiti and three of their children is unbelievable, another frequent piece from books located in this great museum. The small Queen Ty' statue is also there. All in all, Berlin is a very nice city but Museum island is a mandatory place to visit and feel that you really went to Berlin.

The most disappointing part was that I couldn't take a photo with Nefertiti, whom I came specifically to see, as photography is not allowed in her room. However, everything else about the place is wonderful and well worth a visit.

The museum has an excellent collection of ancient artifacts from Egypt and the Mediterranean as well as historical artifacts from the history of Germany. The museum is large enough to visit in 2 to 3 hours without spending too much time on each piece. It is a good balance for a family visit. For enthusiasts, the museum can provide several hours of educational experiences. Of particular interest are the sarcophagi in the lower level of the museum and the statuettes in the first and second level. Of course it is the bust of Nefertiti that draws the most attention to the museum. Be advised, visitors cannot take photographs of the sculpture inside its chamber. You need to step out of the chamber to take photos from afar and you cannot use a flash or a tripod. Knowing this in advance saves being scolded. Otherwise, the museum is a wonderful experience that I strongly recommend if you are visiting Berlin for more than two or three days.

A great museum with tons of Egyptian artifacts and historical information. The building’s architecture is beautiful and deserves a visit just for that. The staff can be unnecessarily impolite when it comes to your jackets and bags. Please remember when visiting that jackets must either be worn the entire time or checked in. And bags must be checked in/placed in lockers. Highly recommended museum for all!
