Really nice and informative museum. Kids enjoyed the interactive parts of the museum and they were very engaged during their stay. It can be a bit overwhelming with all the information about the history, and at least for us we were missing some structure as how to approach all of this information. However it didn’t affect our whole impression of the museum.

One of the best museums in Berlin to show the history of East German society under Soviet rule. It was incredibly busy when we visited and this did make it difficult to interact with any of the museum because there was a queue for everything. We would have appreciated a smaller capacity in the museum, even if that meant we had to wait a while to enter

Very interesting museum about life in East Berlin (East Germany) post WWII. Great atmosphere with a lot of information and interactive exhibits. I personally really enjoyed the apartment set up at the end of the museum tour. So cool to see how people lived during that time inclusive of TV shows you can watch that demonstrated what East Germans could watch and what West Germans could watch. This is well worth a visit while in Berlin.

An interactive and family oriented museum. It was extremely overcrowded which sometimes ruined the experience (hard to pull the drawers when there are lots of people around). If you are a european adult you won't learn much but it's a good place to educate your kids or your american friends :)

We thought this museum was terrible. It is too interactive. Too many things to see and do. It was very overcrowded, so it was difficult to even "do" all the activities. The house part was the best part. I give two stars because there were some neat items and information.

Oh my goodness there is so much to see (and read) here. It‘s a small space, only one floor, but it‘s packed with plenty of display I got a bit overwhelmed. You‘ll need more than an hour to fully experience everything.

We deliberated about going here, wondering if there would really be enough for everyone to do but we were happy that we did. With a group including teenagers, a tween, a grandparent and parents it was nice to find a place that kept us all interested for a couple of hours. Everything is interactive and the car was a lot of fun. Definitely recommend it.

It is a very cool museum, and they present the history very interactively. Absolutely worth to visit if you are interested in the history of Berlin and the East German socialism. If you are interested in motorcycles, you can even buy the combined ticket with the DDR motorcycle museum (it is a smaller one, but they have some nice old pieces).

I thought the exhibits were interesting and the theme is in general fascinating. However, I felt like most of the information was just thrown at the visitors at random bulks rather than in a coherent, logical manner. The museum also felt a little too crowded at times.

First I have visited last month the other Museum in Knaackstraße 97, 10435 Berlin And now visited this one, and i can say you should visit both of them. I liked how both museums are active and you really touch and feel the old stuff, and in this museum, you will find a car that used to manufactured in east Germany, and you will be able to drive it with simulator program. For me it was a great moment and I felt that I traveled in time and lived in east Berlin for a moment

From outside, it can look like a small museum but there are so many things to read and appreciate that you will spend around 2/2.5 hours to visit it all. The heritage is exquisite, and the art curators make totally sure to conserve them in perfect conditions. The museum is divided in different rooms where you not only see objects, but where you can also interact with signs, objects and rooms, making it a whole different experience from history museums. They walk you through the history of the DDR, since daily life habits to politics, economy, military, university and others. The price is quite acceptable only 12 euros and you have access to lockers for free. At the end of the visit, I recommend you to visit the store where you can buy funny souvenirs and beautiful postcards.

We enjoyed visiting the museum. Approx 13 euro entry fee. Some interesting artifacts & a Trabant! No MZ motorcycle which surely is an oversight . . . We enjoyed the film show, interesting posters & looking at the variety of period correct rooms. On the way out there's a gift shop. You can even buy a little piece of the Berlin wall!!

Lange Warteschlange.(Corona bedingt?) Nostalgiker.

This is a fantastic museum! The best part about it is that it is very interactive and you feel like you are really on a discovery quest! You can touch and try everything in the model apartment, even some fashionable clothes from back then ? Suitable for all ages! Guaranteed fun!

Loved this museum. There were so many interactive exhibits. It was brilliant to be able to "drive" a trabi, walk through an East German House and go to an East German nursery and many more. If you do bring children, just be aware that there is a nudist section. I think you can learn loads about life in East Germany and it should be a definite must if you visit Berlin.

Easy five stars for a brilliantly interactive museum. Really imaginative take on life under the DDR regime. Well thought out, lots of innovative ways to learn about what went on and great exhibits. There is a good narrative and structure to what is a relatively small museum. This makes the most of the content and really brings home how East Germany operated. Plus, there's a sense of humour in much of the content😱😁😱😁!!! Only criticism is around the size and how popular it is. When it's busy there can be an annoying wait to interact, so get down there early or late to get the place to yourself.

That's a really nice museum, well done and worth time, but.. YOU NEED TO SET THE LIMITS!!! It was overcrowded, there was 200 people in the queue and you let them all in at the same time, it's small museum!!! I had my tickets booked a week before and didn't expect that you have no limits... It was impossible to comfortably read everything.

Well designed museum, lots of interesting elements of normal life in the DDR. Immersive experience, enjoyed the recreated apartment and watching east vs west German television channels! Was quite busy on a Monday since very little is open for tourists on Mondays.

Very cool museum that explains the history of the former DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik), or East Germany. Visitors can sit in and try to steer an iconic Trabant car. Recreated living quarters help transport visitors back in the past to show what life was like back then. The museum also touches upon the authoritarian nature of the DDR, showing what a cell in a Stasi prison looked like and information about interrogation practices.

Make sure it's not too busy before you go. It's only a small space and they let in far too many people. This really spoils the experience as it becomes impossible to interact with the exhibitions. This is a shame, as there is some interesting stuff there.

A really interesting museum covering life in East Berlin and a world of 40+ years ago. Quite enjoyable and well worth a visit if you have time. Use of Berlin card to reduce cost was also helpful.

Very hands-on. You get to see many details of daily life in East-Germany. Heard it was quite crowded during the day, so visited from 7pm onwards and it was ok. A lot of information to read and only available in DE or EN so for kids non- reading or not fluent ot may be a challenge as they'll miss the explanation. Visited with my teenage daughter who enjoyed it. NB : Discount ticket with Berlin Welcome Card only available at the entrance.

Excellent museum, just opposite museum island. €13 entry, was good value as there is so much here to do. Lots of interactive and thought provoking displays. You could get in the Trabant and pretend to drive it. Brilliant mock up a typical DDR flat in Berlin, with a scary lift experience too! Lots of flaps to lift, plenty of information in English. Nice toilets too.

  • 5/5 Maryam 4 months ago on Google • 26 reviews
I really liked the atmosphere of the museum and its creativity, but it has a sad atmosphere, so I recommend that children who cannot understand the concept of dictatorship should not come to the museum.

  • 5/5 Terry M. 7 months ago on Google • 17 reviews
Very good and worth a look to see how the other half lived it does get busy and gets quite hot. Kids would find sitting in the Trabant fun, the kids we saw there were very curious about it. The mock up of typical DDR flat was very enlightening. It seems quirky but it’s well worth a look.

Excellent exhibits... an authentic look at life in the DDR. 1.5 hrs to comfortably see everything

  • 5/5 Hannes J. 3 years ago on Google
Very well explained, easy to understand but allthrough interesting fakts and less known themes. The museum is interactive - you can visit, experience and play games (For Example: You are responsible for the DDR Car-Production and try to deal with the problems you may have not expected). There are big rebuilds of "an average DDR Home" and other stuff. I especially liked the neutral position of the museum: The Advantages, the Disadvantages, the Difference - everything is kept neutral.

  • 4/5 Vỹ N. 3 years ago on Google
The DDR Museum project was brought to life by the ethnologist Peter Kenzelmann from Freiburg. According to the media, he had searched for a museum about the DDR on a trip to Berlin, but had found none. He therefore decided to fill the gap and so the museum opened its doors on 15 July 2006. The director of the museum is Gordon Freiherr von Godin, who came into position in 2016, and the academic director is Dr. Stefan Wolle. The museum celebrated its first anniversary on 14 July 2007 and announced that it had welcomed 180,000 visitors during that first year. The DDR Museum was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award in 2008 and 2012. The German National Tourist Board (DZT) conducted a survey and the DDR Museum came 44th in the ranking of Germany's top 100 attractions in 2015 and 36th in 2016. The museum welcomed its 500,000th visitor on 26 August 2008 and its millionth visitor on 23 December 2009. The second part of the permanent exhibition opened on 10. October 2010, introducing new themes, objects and interactive platforms. By 14. September 2015, the museum had welcomed 4.000.000 visitors. The DDR Museum celebrated its tenth anniversary on 14 July 2016. The third part of the permanent exhibition opened in August 2016, which consists of a recreated WBS-70 tower block flat. Here as well, visitors have the opportunity to interact and try out the many installations.

It opened our eyes to the living conditions people in the East part of Germany were living after the war and under a socialism mandate. That system proved that it did not work without control over people, control over freedom and liberty and freedom of choice. Very interesting. I count myself blessed for being born in Canada during those times.

  • 5/5 Branimir B. 4 years ago on Google
Great museum - interesting objects from East Germany. You easily become part of the history especially in the soc decorated rooms. A bit crowded but that only shows its popularity. Definitely worth to visit.

  • 4/5 James F. 4 years ago on Google
This has plus and negatives. It's easy to find and there is parking close by although the parking is very expensive. There is easy access though by public transport. The displays are informative, easy to read and interactive. The downside is this place can get very busy which can make navigation difficult and I think the entry price at nearly €10 is too high.

Wonderful museum, but I was a bit alarmed by how many people they were letting in at one time. It was really difficult to social distance and there wasn't a one way system in place or anything. Had to skip a few things because there were so many visitors bunched up around some of the exhibits.

One of the most memorable museums I’ve been too. My husband and I travel quite a bit and have been to a lot of museums so that isn’t saying nothing. This place was recommended to me by a colleague and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone in Berlin. It also was one of the coolest in temperature places in the city. Also located in a cool location and along the water it is a nice place to travel to. I would love to visit again and just comb through all the information. It is small but very dense

Great museum! The amount of things to see, the story, and how everything is presented, all are great. It is a bit expensive but probably an essential Berlin history trip. The elevator and house was the highlight for me. The car simulation was amazing also. There is a comfortable bathroom there which is necessary since the exhibition takes time to go through. Overall I would highly recommend this visit!

Nice little museum about everyday life in de DDR. Go there in the evening (open till 9 pm), for during daytime there is a queue and after 7 there is not.

Awesome museum. Great look at what life was like in East Berlin. Only wish it wasn't so crowded.

The DDR Museum in Berlin gives visitors the chance to experience life in the German Democratic Republic. Every aspect of life is detailed in the museum and whilst their are some fun exhibits on display, given its steep entry fee, overall I would only attend if you are specifically interested in the German Democratic Republic.

A really cool museum experience, with interactive exhibits and interesting and varied information. It gives you information about many different aspects of life in the DDR, and makes it easy to do a deep dive without at the same time overwhelming the visitors with information and text. We spent almost two hours here, but it genuinely felt like only 45 minutes.

A good museum that gave a good view of life in east Berlin. There was a lot to touch and experience. The kids enjoyed the museum. Most of the exhibits were also in English.

Very nice interactive exhibition. You can really get the atmosphere of the DDR. In addition of the exhibition, there is a whole furnished block appartement where guests can roam freely and try and touch everything. I highly recommend this museum if you are visiting Berlin.

Nice experience near the Spree cruise boats and Museum Island. The entrance is on pier level next to the Karl-Liebknecht bridge. Gives a good impression of the life in the GDR. Offers some interactions like a Trabant driving simulator and an AR dressing wardrobe. Slightly crowded when we went and unfortunately lots of "touch-to-view" exhibits.

One of the most interesting museum in Berlin. Very fun/playful and complete. There is a lot of information about the RDA in political and economic way but must of all about the life impact. Very complete!!!! And you can print some recipes, no kidding

A really great museum offering a complex picture of the GDR history and the history of communist regimes in Eastern Europe in general. If you want to enjoy it, reserve at least two hours. Especially the interactive elements deserve your full attention and some time. There is also a museum shop offering some interesting cards, maps, and pieces of the original wall, amongst others.

As a die hard history buff this was quite a treat. The east german living room with the interactive channels at the time, the record vinyls, drving simulation in that iconic east german car. There somany things you can open, read interact, the litle figurine displays are also fascinating. The tour provided a visual and audio enjoyable experience what life was actually like in the former soviet satellite state. note this is predominantly more of the civilian aspect of east Germany. If your more into the security apparatus and the specifics of the former east german intelligence agency, go to the stasi museum

The DDR museum is an excellent museum with great interactivity, good learning and well designed exhibits. A must do for anyone visiting Berlin who wants to see and touch examples of its past of being the capital of the DDR.

Interesting and engaging museum with interactive displays. The place isn't big so can be covered in a relatively short time, an hour or so. So good to fit into a busy schedule. Close to Museuminsel so easy to get to.

The museum isn't big but there is so much information about the daily life in the former GDR and its history. The museum covered all different sections from economy and military to holidays and education in East Germany. It uses not only audio visual materials but tons of real objects and interactive digital programs. What I liked most was the apartment section that is set up like a real apartment in the GDR. It was fun and informative and I highly recommend a visit. Even the items at their gift store are super cute and of a better quality than other souvenir stores.

If you are curious about the old East Germany, you should definitely see it. You should see how life was, how propaganda was. The museum design is very good. Interactive screens come out of the cabinets and drawers. The simulation of driving around the streets of Germany is nice, but I wish the old technology would do VR or something. Be sure to see it. If you have a Berlin card, you can travel at a discount.

The DDR museum is amazing even if it’s an old museum (it shows). I came in early in the morning but the museum was already packed with visitors, i guess they don’t regulate the number of visitors because as soon as I started the visit I already felt cramped (had this feeling until the end). However, this museum is very informative but in a interactive way, making it the kind of museum perfect for kids (they can easily touch, watch, play with the installations). I particularly appreciated the false condo of an ordinary berliner family displayed, in which everybody felt instantly immersed into the past. I almost missed it because the condo is a bit hidden just before the exit of the museum. Eventually I ended up spending a couple of hours even if the museum was very small in size, because there were so many interesting things to read !

Really good museum. Smallish but great information and exhibits. Spent around 2 hours inside but could have spent easily another 2 if I had the time.

Fantastic museum which gives a glimpse into life in the former East German State. Lots of hands on exploring and learning. Needless to say kids and teens love it, but I was impressed how many adults enjoyed it as well. We thought 2 hours would be enough but we spent over 4 hours. Really cleans free toilets. Super fast free wifi (perfect for digital nomads) 37up 75down Parking was a challenge. The parking garage by the museum was closed. We parked about a 10 minute walk away for about 14 eu Highly recommend this museum

Great place!!! One of the most interactive museums that I have ever been to, my girlfriend and I had a good time AND both my 17 and 11 year old thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Not only was it fun, but they learned a little bit as well. I would 100% recommend visiting the DDR. The wait was maybe 20 minutes, but we could have skipped the time if we had bought tickets online prior.

Loads to see, very interactive and not too busy. Loved the accommodation exhibit and the Trabant. Superficially quite light hearted and entertaining but reading the explanations soon hammers home the reality

Pretty decent but very warm.. Does not appear to have aircon. Lots of lifting of heavy flaps to peer at info. Trabant driving simulator not working. Certainly very informative and did explain several facts that were puzzling us about the division after the war.

Great museum! It’s nice to see how it was in the past - this experience reminded my mom of her childhood in the eastern europe. A big minus : the weather was rainy and the museum was very crowded you could barely see anything, especially at the entrance.
