For a book lover and reader, this place is the least wanted place to be standing. This is where, more than 20,000 books were burned down to chock the free flow of knowledge. The empty book shelves reminds us of that day, everyday.

The infamous Bebelplatz, where the notorious National Socialists or "Nazis" burnt 20,000 books remains fresh as a horror to the literate world. The spot where the books were burnt, right in front of the Law-Department of Humboldt University, has been preserved with an underground memorial with shelves, having no books in them - a clear indication of that day of horror.

In Bebel Square, there is this memorial for the book burning event by the Nazis in 1933. The memorial is located below the ground and it just contains empty bookshelves. It is hard to see through the floor glass because everything is in white. It can be better with some lighting or a contrast color.

(Translated by Google) The "Bibliothek" Memorial recalls the burning of books. The memory is now in the signs on the floor, which led to the memorial "library" eight meters deep in the center of the square. This underground memorial with empty shelves is designed to fit exactly 20,000 books. At the same time, for a sad reason, this reminds us of a burial chamber, which was carved out of rock, because Heine's quote was, unfortunately, prophetic. The monument visible through a glass slab indicates that history is hidden under the pavement and behind the walls, opening for those who want to discover there and look.

Fantastic Christmas market here, which has a small entry fee. I believe this was moved here for a previous location. It's a very small space for a market. It gets super busy by 4 pm it's just too much! However, there's some lovely stalls, mostly food and drinks.

Somber site with an underground bookshelf representing the thousands of books' space that was lost. Location is central, near the tv tower and several train stations. Witnessed a beautiful light show there on return visit.

Hitler has lived there and burnt books. İ will add underground library - it's empty - and symbolic for remind history. This Platz behind to university by the way. İ like very much there because every physical and geographic location design and create for relaxty for citizen. For example sidewalk and roads.

The memorial reminding us of the 1933 book burning is a stark exhibition of empty shelves and empty minds. The fright is seeing such movements again today happening among USA extreme conservative members of a political party. May the world never forget!

A simple but sad memorial to all the literature lost from the Hirschfield institute and elsewhere.

Historically interesting but little to see. A grubby window in the middle of the square reveals little of interest except to watch groups of tourists peering hopefully in to see something. And then moving on. Visit the square to remember what happened and then use your imagination. Heinrich Heine, "Where they burn books they will also ultimately burn people."

Don’t miss this subtle memorial, The Empty Library. “That was but a prelude; where they burn books, they will ultimately burn people as well.” quote from German-Jewish author Heinrich Heine's play Almansor (1820).

Look through the glass (in the ground, in the middle of the square) in a sterile-white library room with empty bookshelves. That is one the most powerful symbols that I have ever seen. The most powerful would be the monument across the road - the greeving mother with a dead son in her hands. Please, try to feel both - might make you a better human being.

I am exceedingly impressed with the Memorial to the Book Burning in Berlin. It has a subtle presence, often blending into the background. During the day, I usually have to look closely to find it. At night it illuminates from the ground. At first glance, its significance is not immediately clear. The empty bookshelves poignantly symbolize the book burnings by the Nazis, a horrific chapter in German history. This memorial, with its simple white bookshelves, serves as a solemn reminder of these atrocities. I am grateful for this memorial, as it offers a unique form of remembrance. My recommendation is to visit it after dark, to fully appreciate its impact.

We had to pay our respects to those murdered in the war. It was devastating to see the sheer amount of people who lost their lives. On a site covering 19,000 square metres, there are 2711 concrete columns/slabs. Maybe due to the time of year, it was peaceful and eerie adding to the somber mood. I have seen posts on social media of people lying down or standing on these which is totally unacceptable and disrespectful. So I'm glad we didn't witness anyone doing that. We didn't do the guided tour as we were on a tight time schedule, but if we have the opportunity to return to Berlin again, that would be on our list to do A must see landmark in the area.

It's hard to see the memorial because it had condensation, and the glass cover reflected light. There is also a plaque. I think the event deserves a better memorial.

  • 5/5 Cagri E. 2 months ago on Google • 22 reviews New
The memorial itself isn't important. Standing on the spot where the books were burned right in front of the Nutrimentum Spiritus post was chilling.

  • 5/5 Silent K. 4 years ago on Google
Good to see the site. The wall plaque. The university. The window in the middle of the square looking down into empty bookshelves. Chilling that night must have been for anyone who read and valued free thought.

A clear glass window on ground level looking at empty bookshelves for all the books burned and banned. Moving and poignant reminder- “if you burn books you burn people” 1820 and yet we are still here today

I would always recommend to take a free walking tour, you have a LOT of them and they're pretty good in general, besides there's so much to see and understand, It's better if someone qualified explains it to you. I used the "civitatis" app to book them and it worked wonders for me!

  • 2/5 Deborah W. 1 year ago on Google
I'd seen pictures of this so knew what to expect. The idea is great, but the glass panel through which you look through is so badly scratched by people walking over it that you can't remember see much. Hence the low rating

  • 4/5 Kevin C. 1 year ago on Google
This is literally a hole on the ground! The glass covering the whole was not clear but when you look carefully it shows empty book shelves which I guess represents the books that have been burned. If you didn’t pay attention, you would miss this!

Christmas market taking place while I was there, so impossible to reflect. The glass square in the centre with the empty bookshelves is a simple and effective piece.

Interesting story it was not the Nazis who started the whole book burning at that spot. But the students. The Nazis took the event because it was good publicity for them

Really cool being able to stand right were history, albeit sad history happened. The empty shelves represent the about of books burned that day.

  • 4/5 Zish 10 months ago on Google
This place makes more sense with a guided tour. Has a very interesting history! Below that glass is an underground bookshelves which has space for around 20,000 books, as a reminder of the 20,000 books that went up in flames here on 10 May 1933 at the behest of the Nazis. The Israeli artist Micha Ullman designed the library memorial, which was unveiled on 20 March 1995.

Poignant memorial of book burnings organized in 1933 by the Nazis, consisting of a plaque set into the ground and a window showing a room with empty book cases. I visited the place during the day and the window remained dark to me. Apparently the idea is to visit after sunset.

There is a window set into the square where empty bookshelves have been built. They illustrate just how many books were burned here, some 20,000. On a lighter note, there is a book market opposite the square that sells books by the authors who had their works destroyed.
