Checkpoint Charlie
One of the Most Revieweds in Berlin
Checkpoint Charlie, a historical landmark in Berlin, marks a former crossing point between East and West Berlin. While the site itself is a recreation, it serves as a reminder of the Cold War era, though commercialism detracts from the experience for some.
One of the Most Revieweds in Berlin
Checkpoint Charlie is a must-see for history buffs visiting Berlin, despite the crowds and commercial setting. Consider visiting early or as part of a guided tour to maximize the experience and delve deeper into the historical context.
The checkpoint itself is a replica. Visit the nearby museum for more in-depth information. Expect crowds, especially during peak season. Consider a guided walking tour for added historical context.
Cool spot but it's just in the middle of a main road.
Unfortunately the experience was not as impressive as other Berlin sights, due to the tacky commercial cr*p and fast food restaurants that were there.
It's literally just a checkpoint… also fyi nothing that stands here is original.
A fascinating historical site that offers a glimpse into Berlin’s divided past.
Was a bit busy but still managed to have a good look.

It was bitterly cold the day we visited, but it's part of history, and I felt it needed to be seen whilst in Berlin. I can't imagine how awful it must've been, but very interesting to read about it and see it's remnants. There is a lovely little coffee shop right opposite which was perfect to warm us up, before heading out again 👌
Cool spot but it's just in the middle of a main road. Try to go when it's not busy if you want an easy photo
There was more there than I thought there would be, but it's all currently a bit of a mess in the area. However, you can read the boards to learn about the history of the segregation and it's worth a visit.
Very cool piece of history. Actual guard house was way bigger but they had to scale down for the location. Museum had a lot to offer on the history of the wall, the tensions during the Cold War, and all the war up to the fall of the walk into modern times.
Was a bit busy but still managed to have a good look. Think it’s one of those better getting there early. Exhibition across the street for the checkpoint is worth seeing also. Was good to see it had been preserved well with good descriptions
It's a recreation of the real thing. The really great part is the nostalgic photos from the shops nearby. I wanted to get my passport stamped but no one was in the booth to do that. I understand that sometimes that is available at a small cost.
Another obligitory stop when visiting Berlin. Lots of options for photos and selfies. Everyone will remember their picture at the famous Checkpoint Charlie. Take a look in the museum and the other tourist trap attractions.
Sterk opplevelse.
Well conserved spot, used in the past to manage access between American and Russian sectors. People dressed as soldiers leave earlier than 5 but faster to take a pic. Easy access by subway or public transport.
It's a small stand, very simple, basic but a replica of the original that's in a museum. It was very interesting as we had a guide who explained the checkpoint, some of the stand offs and history however if you just went on your own it might not be quite as interesting. Unbelievably this wasn't really that long ago !!
Went there on a public holiday, the museums were closed however one could easily access and visit the public spaces. The place is walking distance away from other places of tourist importance so should be clubbed along with them. One can also find souvenir shops around with tiny remnants of Berlin wall. A great place that reinforces a strong sense of German resilience and a must visit.
A historic Cold War border crossing, Checkpoint Charlie once marked the tense divide between East and West Berlin. Today, it's surrounded by fast food chains and souvenir shops, which gives it a somewhat commercial, Americanized feel. While the atmosphere lacks the depth of other historical sites, it still offers a symbolic glimpse into one of the most dramatic periods of 20th-century history. Interestingly, the original guardhouse is now preserved in a museum nearby.
Great place to visit. Historical significance to Berlin and Germany. KFC and McDonald's on either side of it brings the American history around it full circle.
It’s free. You don’t need a tour guide to read to you what’s posted on the walls or make up exaggerated stories that you can google yourself. Unless you are that lazy, then pay someone to hold your hands. There is a long line in front of the US side of check point Charlie. Don’t wait there for a photo. Instead go to the back and you’ll get a better photo of both the US booth and the where the DMZ area and where the East German booth was. Side photos are also amazing. The is one last piece of the Berlin wall on display here next to the museum. You don’t need an entrance fee to the museum to see the wall. Also, there are literally tons of souvenir wall fragments being sold for over $30 each. Probably fake, some concrete and spray paint. I can’t believe how many people were lining up to buy these. They aren’t even works of art. Save your money on good German chocolate instead, made by a chocolate store not sold in a gift shop.
Zeer indrukwekkend!!!
A historical site but just a hut. Interesting stuff around. Probably best experienced on a walking tour with good guide.
AUTÉNTICO, SITIO HISTÓRICO IMPERDIBLE
Hier erwartet man zuviel. Wenn man sowieso in der Gegend unterwegs ist, okay.
An important place to remember. The museum explaining it's significance next door is excellent. No tickets required and the line/queue was quick.
An interesting place to visit, especially since it’s literally in the middle Of a busy road and McDonald’s is next door. Didn’t have a chance to go into the actual museum.
A fascinating historical site that offers a glimpse into Berlin’s divided past. The exhibits are informative and thought-provoking, making it a meaningful stop for anyone interested in history.
Near Charlie checkpoint!! Steckenke cafe . I had hot hoc for 2.50 euros. Was good and staff was good too
Unfortunately the experience was not as impressive as other Berlin sights, due to the tacky commercial cr*p and fast food restaurants that were there. However due to its historical place in Berlin history it is worth visiting
Not much to see here but it's more the atmosphere, you can take photos of your family or friends behind a stack of sandbags and there are plenty of tourist shops where you can buy a history of checkpoint charlie and the Berlin wall. Very easy to find, there is a bus stop within 100 meters. Get a map and my advice is to buy a bvg transport ticket.
Für die Leute, die sich für Geschichte interessieren, und für alle, die sich für Politik interessieren: alle hin !
Впечатления вызвали воспоминания о времени, прожитом за Берлинской стеной.
This is more of a pass-by than a museum visit. The story is presented in a museum nearby which seems more of a gift shop than a memorial. The checkpoint itself is a white shack in the middle of the road. It's the stories more than the shack that is of interest so is amazing as part of a tour but nothing much as a stumble-upon!
It’s literally just a checkpoint… also fyi nothing that stands here is original as most of the original signs or even the post itself are just replicas of the original ones that were removed in 1989. What’s worse is the fact that it has now just become a tourist spot, where you see crowds simply taking pictures rather than enjoying the place itself. If you just want to take pictures for your social medias, then it might be a great place to visit but otherwise… I wouldn’t go to checkpoint Charlie again
Extremely underwhelming.
Ein sehr geschichtsträchtiger Ort an dem man noch eindrucksvolle Fotos schießen kann.
All that for a McDonald's
