This is a peaceful church to visit. There are two parts of the church which are open to public at the moment. One part has over 22750 stained glass windows in both blue and a bit of red. This part of the church is octagonal in shape and has a predominant presence of a suspended figure of Jesus in crucifix form which is a contrasting bright bronze structure on a rich blue background. The image at first sight left me awestruck. There is also a Karl Schuke organ at place which is impressive. Then on the other side of the church, there is a part of the church which was used for weddings and funerals until 1943 when it was damaged severely in bombing. It was since then left as is and is not used for any ceremonies anymore. The tall figure of Jesus, some of the marble work on the walls, the tiled ceiling and floor with designs is impressive. The dome of the church starts damaged and you can actually see it from inside as well as outside. There are images from commencement of church till date pasted on one section of the church. There is also a tower on the outside which is currently under renovation. As a landmark, this church should definitely be visited.

When my wife and I visited Berlin, we walked around the Memorial Church of Emperor William. It is an evangelical church. German Emperor William II. ordered the construction in honor of his grandfather Vilje I. It was badly damaged during the Second World War. Inside, the acoustics are exceptional and the organ is playing. Wonderful atmosphere.

Nestled amidst the bustling vibrancy of Berlin’s cityscape, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church stands as a profound testament to a bygone era, its haunting ruins echoing tales of a Germany torn asunder by war. Stumbling upon this iconic landmark rather serendipitously, I found myself enveloped in a journey through 20th-century Germany’s tumultuous history. 1. A Portal to the Past: The original church, dating back to the 1890s, bore witness to both World Wars. Its damaged spire, poignantly nicknamed the “hollow tooth”, stands defiantly, juxtaposed with the modern belfry – a fusion of old and new, much like the city itself. 2. Architectural Alchemy: The contemporary church, built in the 1960s, is a marvel of blue-hued glass and concrete – a resplendent phoenix rising from the ashes. The interplay of light within offers a spiritual solace that’s almost ethereal. 3. Cultural Crossroads: The church’s museum is replete with artifacts and exhibits, offering insights into Berlin’s rich past and the resilience of its people. Reason to Rethink: If you’re a purist seeking solely medieval gothic architecture, this juxtaposition of old and new might feel discordant. The church’s modernistic elements are an acquired taste. Getting There: Conveniently located near the Zoologischer Garten station, the church is easily accessible by both U-Bahn and S-Bahn, making it a seamless addition to any Berlin itinerary. In conclusion, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is not just a religious edifice, but a poignant reminder of Berlin’s indefatigable spirit. For those, like me, who chanced upon it with little forethought, it offers an unexpected deep dive into history and an enduring reflection on resilience and rebirth.

Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church made the most impression on me of all the attractions of Berlin. This is a symbol of peace symbolizing the devastation of war. Preserved ruins surrounded by modern buildings. It is worth knowing the history of this place. I'm from Vietnam!

There is an interesting exhibition in the church. The best time to come here is in the morning. Then it's (probably) not that full yet. During our visit in the afternoon there was quite a crowd and there was little opportunity to view the exhibition in peace. Entry is free. Access is also possible with a wheelchair via a ramp.

Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is the best representative of the contrast that Berlin is. Today it acts like a memorial to the loss that Germany has suffered during the war and is one of the most peaceful as well as beautiful architectures in the city of Berlin. You should definitely include it in your itinerary while you are visiting the city. It was built in the year 1891. Today you can see the ruins of the church and history began from every corner of this church. Visited September 2023

Excellent way of preserving the history of one of Berlin's early churches. It was totally destroyed but the structure is still standing and been repurposed to hold the artifacts and historic documents detailing its history. Right next to it is the new Church and well designed and sombre. A memorial to its past and the people of those days. We recommend a visit if you are into history and architecture. 👍👌👍👍👍

I love coming to this church, both the old bombed memorial church and the new one. Interesting to read through the history. They've recently added a memorial honoring the victims of the 2016 Christmas market terrorist attack.

A true beauty to see in person. Just gorgeous. People in & around the building were greatly respectful. So glad we were able to visit it in 2017! The church in ruins is just as gorgeous as the one built in memorial. The history is so rich, wonderful educational moment for our young daughter. Ontario, Canada Visited April 2017

This is a beautiful and significant location in Berlin, clearly displaying the destruction of war for all viewers to witness and remember. Inside the old church there is an exhibit about the history of the church and the creation of the churches to either side of the old church. The remaining artwork- mosaics and sculptures- that are in the new and the old structures are impressive and beautiful. Definitely worth a visit.

The main part of the church is currently being used as a covid test centre but is splendid from what you can see. The rest of the site consists of a glass tower with no access and a glass church which is great inside. There is a magnificent altar and stained glass in the blue windows. On the Sunday evening I went an organist was playing and lots of people sitting and contemplating their lives. In the middle of Christkindl at the moment but well worth a visit

What a historic gem. A tip would be to spend some time reading up on the historic past this structure has. Realizing when you look up and down the street in the surrounding blocks there isn't anything else left that survived the great war. The area is populous and vibrant but those scars and scorch marks are rare remembrances of the real impact of the destruction.

Amazing war torn structure overlooking and surround by the beautiful Christmas market. TOILET WARNING Almost all pubic toilets in Berlin have an attendant that will charge you to use the toilet. This is NOT a compulsory charge and you DO NOT have to pay. (Watch the locals ) My advice would be, if you feel the toilet is cleaned to a high standard then tip the amount that you feel is deserved on your way out.

It’s a beautiful church that has tons of history. It’s ceiling felt down during the war and it’s incredible to have a church as well as a memorial of it just in Berlin CBD. Theres a construction site being conducted just next to it, but that doesn’t affect its beauty and relevance.

One must feel bad about how it was before November 23, 1943, and today. One of the most graceful churches in Germany at it's time of glory, now reduced to rubbles and pieces. The restored structure leaves an impression of long struggle, the floor was complete mosaic and frescoed roof is still carrying the class of Art.

The church was bombed by the Allies in World War II. Only a small part of the church has survived. If you look closely you can see holes in the wall everywhere. On the night of November 23, 1943, during World War II, the church was badly damaged in an Allied air raid on Berlin.

What an iconic building in an amazing part of the city. It is so poignant to see the ruins of what was once a beautiful church and the very modern Bell Tower and church next to it. We were fortunate to hear the bells ringing and see it lit up at night - this is a must see sight.

A must-see when visiting Berlin for those interested in history! The small museum inside details the history of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, including pictures and models of the site before and after the war. Admission is free, and all of the signs include English for those (like myself) who are still learning German.

The historic church was destroyed in World War II and was not rebuilt. All you can see is the ruins. Instead, a new wing was built right next to it. Now that’s a taste search. Certainly beautiful, but the old historic churches are simply much more lavishly furnished. The shopping mile is not far away. Can be combined well as a contrast program.

Nice place. The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church (Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche in German) is a renowned historical landmark located in Berlin, Germany. Here are some key points about this iconic church: 1. **Location:** The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is situated on the Kurfürstendamm boulevard in the heart of Berlin, in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district. 2. **History:** The original church was built between 1891 and 1895 in honor of Kaiser Wilhelm I, the first German Emperor, and King of Prussia. It was designed in neo-Romanesque architectural style. 3. **Bombing Damage:** During World War II, the church suffered extensive damage from Allied bombing raids in 1943. The bombing left the church in ruins, with its spire partially destroyed. 4. **Memorial and Museum:** Instead of completely restoring the church, it was decided to preserve it as a memorial to the horrors of war. A modern church building, known as the "new church," was constructed alongside the ruins. The damaged spire was left as a reminder of the war's destruction. 5. **Blue Church:** The modern church, often referred to as the "Blue Church" due to its blue-tinted glass walls, is used for regular religious services and events. 6. **Memorial Hall:** Adjacent to the church, there is a Memorial Hall that houses exhibitions and displays related to the history of the church, World War II, and the consequences of war. It provides a somber and reflective atmosphere. 7. **Spire of Hope:** The damaged spire of the original church, known as the "Spire of Hope" (Gedächtniskirche in German), stands as a symbol of reconciliation and peace. It has an open, jagged appearance as a testament to the destruction of war. 8. **Visitors:** The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is a popular tourist destination in Berlin. Visitors can explore the modern church, the Memorial Hall, and the outdoor grounds with various memorials and sculptures. 9. **Concerts and Events:** The church hosts concerts and cultural events, adding to its role as a place of both remembrance and cultural significance. The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church stands as a powerful reminder of the consequences of war and the importance of peace and reconciliation. It is a symbol of Berlin's resilience and determination to preserve historical memory while embracing the future.

Beautiful church to visit. Very special because of it’s history. And the ‘new’ part, with the blue windows, looked very cool and very progressive/futuristic for it’s time!! I thought that part was relatively new, but it was from the ‘50/‘60! You’re not allowed to make pictures of the shop apparently, I discovered 😖😆

Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is the most famous place in the city center of West Berlin and one of the most important churches in the city. This church is located in the busy and lively area of Korfurstendamm, but inside, silence and peace prevails everywhere. The complex consists of two buildings, one is the ruins of a former church and the other is a modern church building that speaks of war and peace, and the determination of the citizens of Berlin to rebuild after the war. The original church was built in the 1890s and was severely damaged in a bombing raid in 1943. The current building was built between 1959 and 1963. Today, the memorial church is one of the famous attractions of West Berlin, and the Berliners gave it the nickname "der hohle Zahn", which means the hollow tooth.

The construction of the church was part of a Protestant church-building programme initiated by Kaiser Wilhelm II and his consort Augusta Victoria to counter the German labour movement and socialist movement by a return to traditional religious values. Wilhelm II decided to name the church in honor of his grandfather Kaiser Wilhelm I. The competition for the design was won by Franz Schwechten, member of the Bauakademie who had distinguished himself with the design of the Anhalter Bahnhof. Schwechten, a native Rhinelander, planned for a large church to be built in a Neo-Romanesque style modelled on the Bonn Minster with a Tuff stone facade. His design included 2,740 square metres of wall mosaic, a 113 metres high spire now 71 metres and a nave which seated over 2,000 people. The foundation stone was laid on 22 March 1891, which was Wilhelm I's birthday. The church was dedicated on 1 September 1895, the eve of the Day of Sedan. At that time, the entrance hall in the lower section had not yet been completed; that part of the church was not opened and consecrated until 22 February 1906. Construction costs mounted to 6.8 million gold mark, raised primarily through donations. The church design, quite unfamiliar in the Brandenburg region, inspired several architectural projects in the surrounding area, like the Romanisches Café building, also designed by Schwechten.

Interesting remnant of the war. Arrived after 8pm, so not sure if you can go inside. Its striking to look at, however there are building works going on and anti-terrorism blockades surrounding that area, which feels uneasy. Only a quick stop, but glad I checked it out.

The church was damaged during the Second World War in 1943 and today, with its tower ruins, is a memorial against war and destruction. Repairs and renovations were also carried out on the clocks, which have been illuminated with LED spotlights ever since. Inside the old part of the church there is a small museum. The old church is beautiful and so is the inside of the modern addition with its stained glass panels and huge pipe organ. I attended a classical concert in this modern sanctuary and it featured the organ - very impressive. DON'T VISIT ON SUNDAY MORNINGS - there is a private church service there and the attendants at the door will turn you away very rudely if you ask to look inside for a minute, even if the church service isn't starting for another half hour. Quite a nasty experience that spoiled my day in an otherwise very pleasant trip to Berlin.

The original church on the site was built in the 1890s. It was badly damaged in a bombing raid in 1943. The present building, which consists of a church with an attached foyer and a separate belfry with an attached chapel, was built between 1959 and 1963. The damaged spire of the old church has been retained and its ground floor has been made into a memorial hall. The Memorial Church today is a famous landmark of western Berlin, and is nicknamed by Berliners "der hohle Zahn", meaning "the hollow tooth".

Called "the hollow tooth" the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is a Protestant church on the Kurfürstendamm in the centre of the Breitscheidplatz. Badly damaged in a bombing raid in 1943 the present building was built between 1959 and 1963, but the damaged spire of the old church has been retained and its ground floor has been made into a memorial hall acting as modern history.

An old church standing in the middle of the Ku’damm area, giving the area a very bizzare yet intriguing scenery. The church is now more functioning as a museum, where inside you can see a huge tapestry, statue, old bible, and miniature of the area in old times. I love it cause it can stand as an alternative after the long walk and shoping spree in Ku’damm area. The museum is air conditioned, so I jump in from the heat of the summer. The church itself is enormous and the scale of it just makes you feel something.

Recent visit to Berlin and of all the beautiful sights I saw and amazing places visited this one stands out. Left as a reminder of the horrors of war, it is beautiful in its ruined state. Referred to by locals as the Hollow Tooth. The ceiling is cracked, the building shows all the damage of the bombs it, as well as the whole of Berlin had to endure. A serene and awe inspiring place. It costs nothing to visit but you can leave a donation and or buy something from the gift area.

  • 5/5 Elisabeth M. 1 year ago on Google
It is a protestant church located in the Charlottenburg district of Berlin. The church is known today as a symbol of West Berlin. It was built as a monument to German Emperor Wilhelm I. It was opened to the public with a great ceremony on September 1, 1895. In November 1943, the Church was badly damaged during a bombardment and stands as it is.

If you're interested in religious history, this place is perfect for you, along with other religious museum around Berlín. This place has so much history inside. Just in from of it, there's another building, new in comparison to this one, that is so well cared. They stain glass and the pipe organ gives the place a special touch.

Beautiful Protestant church with a moving history in the middle of Breitscheidplatz in Berlin-Charlottenburg! We were there in December, where there is still a beautiful Christmas market on the area around the church. But even so, this attraction is highly recommended! 💒🙏
