One of the world’s most fascinating collections, a truly encyclopedic and unique collection of masterpieces across European painting epochs north and south of the Alps. Some collections may be larger, some collections may be more bombastic, but what marks the Berlin museum as exemplary is its crisp, cool, unassailable dedication to presenting masterpieces one after the other across 2km of interior wall. Powerful, mesmerizing, quiet, confident. Museums don’t get more sophisticated than this.

The museum is brilliant and has many great pieces of art. You can find Botticelli, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Vermeer and even Bruegel there. I have spent around three or four hours watching them and exposition of Donatello which is showing the born of Renaissance. But the minus I hate (which was also in the national art gallery of Berlin) is that there is was no any tablets below/next to the paintings and sculptures where I could find out information about the history of a painting or it’s description.

Temporary homes can be as homely as a wet shoe box. And frankly, we will all rejoice when this place gets its new place. But seeing all this Dürer in one spot, curated with more class than a PhD, and the walk across was the best art value since the last time I collected art in Indonesia. If the exhibition listed is of any interest, hop across and enjoy.

One of the best classic picture galleries in the world for the quality, the scope and the variety of its holdings. Italian, Dutch, German and French renaissance and Baroque art is very well depicted with some English and Spanish school’s examples. In the other hand the museum really needs a makeover. Picture tags are in German only, there’s a lack of information and context, plus the place feels antiquated.

Very impressive collection of paintings with lot of Dutch painters too. First part is mostly religious painting. The museum is not usually crowded.

A fine museum, with many important painters like Caravaggio, Rafael, Durer, Bruegel, van Dyck. Themes were repetitive due to the periods - mostly biblical paintings. The Flemish area instead give a throw back to the daily life of 17-18 century.

Truly wonderful art gallery. Lots of Italian works and a special exhibition on van Eyck. Place was deserted when we visited early on Saturday. Good idea if you can manage that time. You'll have main galleries to yourselves, pretty much

Brilliant collection. Reach of excellent masterpieces museum at the moment ( July 2023) hold a temporary exhibition of Hugo van der Goes - that blew my mind. Highly recommend if you love Early and High Renaissance, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Cranach, Botticelli, Bruegel - just to name a few.

I went exclusively to see Caravaggio's paintings, but the roof's light reflection on the protective glass makes imposible to appreciate his wonderful art; it is the same for all the paintings protected by glass, you have to move around until find a position where you can actually see the whole painting without getting the annoying light reflection and that position is not necessarily the best angle to appreciate the work.

Great place for art lovers and lovers of renaissance art and oil paintings. Students get half price off. If not a student, I am unsure whether this is a gallery worth visiting to pay full price for unless you are a true art enthusiast.

Visited this gallery on SonntagsMuseum and it was a great experience. It wasn't so crowded and you could really enjoy the paintings. Onky bad thing was that almost half of the exhibition was temporarily closed. They also provide audio guides.

I found the gallery to be a bit disappointing - I came for the pictures they advertised on their website (landscapes and still-life) but what I mostly found were some portraits. One couldn't bring a backpack to the gallery which was annoying (though understandable) because I got dehydrated there because of that. The gallery was bigger than I expected but surprisingly there wasn't that many people. I appreciated that one could use the restrooms without leaving the exposition entirely. It was also nice that there was lots of benches, and names of the paintings written both in German and English. Would have appreciated a bit of info about the paintings written next to them as well (hopefully in English). The staff there was nice, although not everyone's English was the best. I liked the small shop there and the view from the gallery.

The workers barely speak any English. Nothing was explained when I bought the ticket and they seemed kinda annoyed when asked questions. Got annoyed by a person demanding wearing a mask in a certain way. Don’t you have anything better to do? The gallery itself is worth to visit, many masterpieces of the world famous artists such as Rembrandt. But the service spoils the experience quite a bit.

Completed in 1998 (though the collection first exhibited back in the 19th century) and a part of the popular "Kulturforum", the "Gemäldegalerie" or "Paintings Gallery" (if translated to English) houses European art collections between the 13th and 18th centuries. It has the largest collection fo Dutch artworks in the world as well as exhibits artworks by maestros of their era, like Rembrandt, Raphael, Botticelli, Dürer and Bellucci. I was overwhelmed at the Gallery's collection, to be honest. It has more than 3,500 paintings and needless to say, a man can faint half the way (I almost did).

It has some amazing work (a lot of 14th/15th century religious stuff) but the lighting in some rooms is really bad and doesn't make it easy to appreciate all the work. The woman working at the wardrobe was extremely rude and made me give her my coat, even though I told her I wanted to keep it on ? my friend had no trouble entering the gallery without it, so I'm not sure why I had to spend my visit being cold. This woman also refused to speak any English, so I struggled to explain that I really just wanted to keep my coat on (I only wanted to give her my umbrella and a scarf). Really strange, I've never experienced anything like that before.

The Gemäldegalerie prides itself on its scientific methodology in collecting and displaying art. Each room can be taken in as a single statement about one to five artists in a certain period or following a certain style. The German collection is the finest and most comprehensive in the world, rivalled only by Vienna and Munich, and the Early Netherlandish and Italian collections also exceptionally comprehensive. The holdings of Spanish, French and British art are much smaller. Especially notable rooms include the octagonal Rembrandt room and a room containing five different Madonnas by Raphael. Definitely recommended for art enthusiasts.

Amazing! Loved it! Definitely recommend!! I spent here 5 hours and it was not enough, I didn’t have time to check all the paintings and listen to all the audios. Masterpieces everywhere: Ruben, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Botticelli, and so many others. The audio guide was essential for me to understand the symbols and learn the stories behind the paintings. Very beautiful!! I entered with a 3 day museum pass and I didn’t pay for anything. Leave your stuff at the locker, it is free and you can focus on enjoying your visit.

Amazing museum! Really huge though, we spent 6 hours. Lockers are free. So are audio guiding systems. Really interesting artworks. It's a bit chilly inside. Cafeteria is a bit expensive but nice. Really cool souvenir shop inside.

Definitely one of the best collection of Reinassance fine art in the world. I was pleasantly surprised to see masterpieces from Giotto to Rembrandt to Bruegel, Cranach, Botticelli, Caravaggio, Bronzino to name just a few! Consider at least three hours and remember masterpieces are equally spread throughout the gallery from the beginning to the end. Definitely worth a visit (or a couple of visits) if you are a fine art lover!

We came to Gemäldegalerie for the Mantegna versus Bellini exposition. It was absolutely great, there are very famous masterworks to see. The exposition will stay until June 30.

(Translated by Google) A wonderful spiritual feast. I would love to see the artists' works again. A few hours spent studying the paintings are not enough, unfortunately the trip was too short. I strongly encourage you.

(Translated by Google) Great museum with still nice rooms. Unfortunately, the daylight for which the works of art were made is missing. The ticketing is unprofessional, as are the security and cashiers. The lockers are still based on coins, the till doesn't change. That is a bit anachronistic; the museum visit is already in the bucket before the actual entry ...

(Translated by Google) Great exhibit, be sure to take the audio guide! The collection is known to be terrific (fountain of youth, man with the gold helmet, etc.) and deserves the space it is given here. Particularly noteworthy is the audio guide, which is included in the entrance fee. With many audio guides you have the problem that some irrelevant text was spoken for each picture, which only describes what you can see anyway, so that you get a lot of running time but little interesting information. That is not the case here! No text is longer than 2:30 minutes and you always learn something interesting. I would also like to recommend the texts on pictures that are not among the classic top highlights, here you are provided with almost investigative background information. Since the selection was made very carefully, you will not be overwhelmed with hundreds of numbers to be heard here.

(Translated by Google) Overwhelming art, the presentation of which leaves a lot to be desired: the clumsy hanging and lighting make even important works difficult or impossible to view, the exhibition is completely conceptless and the army of intrusive security guards is extremely annoying on the tour. Sad to show such a treasure so lovelessly! The Gallery is always worth a visit - between wonderful and topical guided tours and informative signs, the well-curated collection is a sight to behold. You'll find mind-blowing pieces from the heights of sacral medieval art to the budding humanism of the Renaissance. The current special exhibition of late gothic art is multifaceted, expansive, immersive and more than worth a visit. Should you read this in the distant future, after the special exhibition has ended - know that this museum has a history of excellence and is impressive even in its regular state.

Unbelievable that you are always almost on your own (not only in Covid times!) with all this "Old Masters": Dürer, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Botticelli, Canaletto ... if you compare this with the (regular) crowds in Museums like this in Rom, Paris, London, Florenz, Amsterdam ...

It is a really nice place to visit. However when purchasing the tickets the clerk doesn’t tel you what mask you wear. Upon entering we had to change our masks twice because they wouldn’t accept other types of masks even though they were the same they themselves were using.

The Painting Gallery has a rich number of valuable collections. My friend and I spent 4 hours there and still couldn't finish the round tour. Some paintings only have German descriptions, so renting an audio guide is very helpful

A beautiful collection, we had an enchanting time while visiting. But we give such a low score because the services offered are not up to the expectations: we waited after our visit for 40 minutes at the cafeteria, where only one person was working, and when we finally were able to order our lunch, nothing that was on the menu was available. The waitress was rude, touched our Covid masks, and was terribly slow - chatting with customers is not an option if you have an hour queue behind.

Wonderful collection, was in a bit of disarray as they are installing a new lighting system, so some rooms were closed and others empty. Still what was there was exceptional. Will be back.

I was lucky enough to visit many museums and galleries in Europe, so I can say that the collection of paintings presented here is very good. Especially, here are collected so many stars of the Renaissance, both Italian and Northern, that allows you to immerse yourself in the painting, aesthetics, culture and philosophy of that time. I think that all art lovers will be satisfied by visiting this gallery.

very beautiful museum in which you can easily spend hours looking at mostly "bondieuseries" and traditional european renaissance paintings! the price is quite cheap and there's a student refund which is always a plus! at the moment until july there's an exhibition about tolerance which was very interesting

Visited here with museum pass. A lot of 1300-1500‘s pieces, which would not be that much tempting unless you‘re deeply religious or into history. Still, some flanders paintings the gallery offer are pretty enjoyable.

It's a really good gallery. Temporaly exhibitions are the best because they have English translation. And the permanent exhibition is on german. There are some descriptions on English but not so much. But here you can see many beautiful pictures.

A wonderful collection of some of the best known artwork. I really like how the work was displayed - with the information placard discretely located below most of the artwork and blending in with the wall - which allowed for an unbroken view of the art. If you’re not buying tickets in advance it’s best to show up as soon as the gallery opens.

  • 5/5 René M. 5 months ago on Google
Well done. Great collection (more complete and balanced that in that in similar museums in other European capitals). I enjoyed the "Zoom on van Eyck" exhibition which was more immersive and interactive... Hopefully more of this approach to experiencing great works of art can be adopted for the permanent collection.
