I
signed
up
at
this
location
for
a
week
pass,
as
I
am
on
a
business
trip
in
Berlin
visiting
from
New
York.
Today
was
my
3rd
day
visiting
the
gym.
Before
I
entered
the
gym,
I
stood
outside
for
a
few
minutes
because
I
had
to
take
a
business
call.
One
of
the
gym
employees
repeatedly
asked
me
if
I
had
paid
for
parking,
and
I
had
to,
repeatedly,
tell
him
that
I
did
not
drive
to
the
gym
so
no,
I
had
not
paid
for
parking
(why
was
he
policing
the
parking
lot?).
I
have
been
going
to
gym
studios
for
most
of
my
life
and
different
gyms
have
different
rules-for
instance,
some
gyms
supply
towels
or
do
not
require
one.
Today
they
told
me
they
would
not
let
me
in
because
I
did
not
have
a
towel.
The
girl
at
the
front
desk
said
it
was
in
my
contract
(all
in
german,
which
the
staff
understood
at
the
time
that
I
do
not
speak
and
that
i
cannot
read
signs
in
german),
and
she
also
lied
to
her
manager
and
said
she
told
me
I
needed
a
towel.
Then
they
checked
my
shoes
to
make
sure
they
were
sports
shoes
(as
if
I
would
wear
something
else
going
to
a
gym),
which
was
humiliating
and
unnecessary
because
obviously
i
was
wearing
sneakers.
I
know
for
a
fact
that
the
girl
who
signed
me
up
never
told
me
I
needed
a
towel.
I
know
that
she
did
not
tell
me
I
needed
a
towel
because
she
didn't
offer
to
tell
me
anything
about
the
gym
which
I
found
to
be
odd.
She
didn't
tell
me
where
the
machines
were
or
what
services
the
gym
offered.
She
didn't
tell
me
any
rules,
and
I
remember
thinking
it
was
odd
that
no
one
was
more
helpful.
I
understand
that
they
might
not
be
more
forthcoming
because
I
only
signed
up
for
7
days
(I'm
again,
on
a
business
trip).
But
to
have
staff
lie
and
tell
me
they
told
me
the
rules,
check
my
shoes
in
front
of
other
staff,
and
then
ask
me
to
leave
until
I
found
a
towel
felt
humiliating
and
racially
discriminatory
because
I
am
a
foreign
black
person
visiting
this
gym.
Again,
this
was
my
3rd
time
coming
into
the
gym.
No
one
mentioned
I
needed
a
towel
on
the
2nd
day
either.
I
almost
never
complain
about
any
companies,
but
the
service
I
got
today
was
super
rude
and
cold.
I
will
not
be
coming
back
to
this
location,
which
is
a
pity,
because
the
machines
were
great
and
I
am
in
Berlin
often
for
work.
Tell
me,
do
you
make
it
a
practice
for
all
new
gym
goers
to
show
you
their
feet
or
just
the
black
ones?
