We were recommended to get a combined museum ticket at the white tower (15 Euro) Glad we did as not sure we would have selected the Archeological museum to visit otherwise - it was worth the visit. We thought it would be a quick visit but we spent almost 3 hours here. Great museum with huge collection of statues and artefacts. Displays are organised by periods and clearly explained (English as well). Plenty of displayed video and interactive screens. We visited noon on Sunday and the place was almost empty so could really enjoy spending time reading and examine pieces. Highly recommended (unless history is really not your thing). Coffee shop + Gift shop also available.

Beautifully displayed archaeological museum, one of the largest in Greece. Gold and artifacts from ancient tombs dating well over 1000 years. Don’t miss the Field of Gardens outdoors (no tickets required for outside).

The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki is a treasure trove of ancient history, located in the vibrant city of Thessaloniki, Greece. As a history enthusiast, I was captivated by the museum's extensive collection and its ability to transport visitors back in time. With its remarkable exhibits and immersive displays, this museum offers a truly enriching experience for both locals and tourists alike.

Very nice museum BUT again the theocratic Greek regime will never allow to display homosexuality. The Greek museums reserves are full of them but you will never see any representation of it in any greek museum. You have to go to the British museum or the Louvre to see them… Please Greece come back again in the path of civilisation.

A must go museum in Thessaloniki if you're a history person. There are a lot of pieces drom many different eras. Your nationality and age determines the ticket price, but its still cheap.

Very nice & surprisingly large collection. When you first walk in, it doesn’t seem to be that big of a building, but the rooms are deep and contain a lot of really nice items. When you walk in, there is a temp check before you can buy a ticket. Make sure you use your forehead for the temp (and not your wrist like all of the other places) or they will yell and make you come back. No biggie. My favorite portion of the museum is the downstairs bit that has the pictures and drawing of Thessaloniki from antiquity. Some of them are room-size and very detailed so it’s easy to see and understand.

For what is worth, this must be the one of the best museums I've been in. Astonishing display of ancient histor, right here in front of your eyes, makes you grasp and feel so much awe. This is a must go place if you ever visit Solun/Thessaloniki. For 8 euros you can get 2 or 3 hours worth of value.

We enjoyed the museum... Very well laid out with English on most displays. The docents were awful... Stood close and almost pushed us. We had never experienced that before. That was unfortunate but it didn't diminish how much we enjoyed the displays. Some of the items were grave goods from royal tombs.

The entry is free for adults under 25. As a 25+ year old, you can get a 15 euro ticket to visit the Archeological Museum, the Museum of Byzantine Culture and the White Tower. The ticket in question is valid for 3 days! The staff is friendly and the the lockers are free. Very enriching experience. You’ll leave the Museum with a greater understanding Thessalonian culture!

An unexpected delight on a Sunday. Had a lot of fun with a 6 year old. Great collection and a nice flow through the museum without it being too overwhelming for us or for the kid. Recommend it on a Sunday when most of the commercial area is closed.

The museum is larger then it appears. You can buy a combined ticket of multiple sites for just 15 EUR. RECOMMEND. There are two main half circles with pottery, statues and various art. All worth the money and time. There's also a nice café downstairs and rather underwhelming giftshop. The building is air-conditioned and there are safe boxes free of charge for your belongings.

One of, if not the best museum I've ever visited. Everything is clean, extremely well-organized and prepared, and there's a text in English to describe every artifact. Captivating all the way through, and mesmerizing really. I came there on a friend's recommendation, and wasn't disappointed. If you're interested in history, it's a must. I'm not even a history craze myself, though I loved it.

Even better than the Byzantine museum next door, this is a great place to wander around if to get a brief lesson in the archaeological history of the area. It’s worth getting the multi entry ticket that allows access to four museums over three days.

There is air conditioning and plenty of languages available. The direct translations on the walls are green and English though. Staff is very friendly.

    1. Thessaloniki archeological museum is situated centrally and we'll within many other museums and within walking distance of white tower. 2. The front desk is really helpful. Make sure you hand over your heavy luggages to the locker so that you can roam around the museum freely. 3. A flyer from the front desk will help you to install the museum app, which will give audio tours for selected display items. 4. Many interesting pieces including many ceramic items, sculptures, jewellery and remains of an embalmed lady is on display. 5. Prepare to spend around 3 hours of fun filled day if you are ready to enjoy the history to the fullest.

I love this museum!!! I’ve been to so many museums but this one is the only one that I came back twice within two days! I feel amazed by the ancient people’s wisdom and skill sets for making the gold jewelry. I couldn’t move my feet in front of those art pieces. Highly highly recommend!!!!!! Pls don’t miss it if you are here to visit.

This is one of the most beautiful and the most organized museums I've ever seen. Greek history, culture, life and death from the earliest times 5,6 centuries BC. There are so many nice marble monuments you can not desribe. You can just watch and enjoy. There are 8 permanent exibitions, with categories such as Prehistoric Macedonia, Toward the birth of cities, Macedonia from 7 century bc till 4th century ad, Thessaloniki - Metropolis of Macedonia, The gold of Macedon. The ticket price is 4 euro for adults and kids. Maybe they can follow example of Byzantine museum where tickets for kids are free. I could spent hours there and definitelly looking forward comming back. Recommend!

Great museum with hundreds of overwhelming pieces of antiquity but all spoilt by the people that work there. I appreciate that the artifacts have to be protected and security has to be tight but please, don't follow me around making me feel like I am some petty thief. Please stop treating your customers like that. Thank you

Well organized by timelines and by aspects of peoples lives through each era. Text is in Greek and English. Saw some items I have not seen in London, Paris, New York or Chicago museums. One leaves with a good understanding of the development of Thessaloniki and Macedonia from archaic to present times. Very thorough Covid screening. Bring proof of vaccination with a picture ID matching that proof. Then they perform a body temperature check (forehead) and have you sanitize your hands.

I suppose when you think about European history and art and architecture, you will think about Greece. Or about Alexander the Great and this place had a huge trove of information to share. It was also ironic that most of the lovely treasures were off their history tombs….which is not surprising as our historic knowledge is based on that. Which reminded me that the European culture pillaged the rest of the world from their land, people and resources. That they even realised the values of the tombs and the likes of civilisation of the world and pillaged them and took it to their own museum to show them. Now that is civilisation! Which was not the case here, just saying….

The Museum has an interesting exhibition around the history of Greece an Thessaloniki. There was also an exhibition about Japan, which felt a bit out of place for me. Very informational and interesting. I recommend the package for all the museums in Thessaloniki. Also, I’m not sure these pictures are only from this particular museum. There may be some Byzantine Museum photos.

Very rich collection of antiquities. Strongly recommend. The only mistake: the reconstruction of reed in avlos incorrect. It must be highly likely single, not double.

*COVID UPDATE* You must show a vaccination approval with a valid ID A must in Thessaloniki!! Outstanding exhibitions. There isplenty of staff to see from many time areas. It took us 3-4 hours and we skipped some because some things repeated themselves

It actually took me 3 (not long) visits to see it all! So interesting, with history from millions of years ago, to the antiquity up to the modern history of northern Greece! At some parts I thought that more context should be added, like maps when showing artefacts from areas (And I'm Greek and had no idea of the places, imagine how it would be for internationals). Nevertheless incredibly interesting, can't wait to visit again, definitely recommend!

After visiting Athens' museums with classical period artifacts you can get a totally different story from the Byzantine collections here. This museum is smaller than the one in Athens, but I think it presents its subject much better. Displays are more carefully constructed to tell their story. I enjoyed visiting and learned a lot.

Doesn't make sense after the "gold and graveyards" expo. Probably that's why it was for free. Artefacts from 5000 years BC should not be right next to items from 1970's ...

Many interesting tools and tomb accessories to see, also with the history of the city. But still they need to get some things straight while mentioning Turks instead of Ottoman Empire which does not add up according to the time periods mentioned.

Interesting museum that goes way back in time in Thessaloniki- don't be fooled by the name, as the museum covers history, art, and culture as well as the excavations themselves. Good to visit early on your trip to the city.
