Excellent hiking trail and well-marked. I took the 17KM trail. I found it moderate, but some may find it hard, especially the climbs. Peaceful hike with great views. Some stretches were overgrown due to the rain, but overall the trail is well-maintained and I felt safe. I saw a jackal, which was nice. I'm definitely going back soon.

Absolutely amazing. Great value for money. Safe and secure. Entrance fee plus car fee payable at gate via card. 3 Different Hike options/trails. Beautiful scenery. Good for kids and beginners. After Hike we took a spectacular 66km drive in the nature reserve and saw troops of monkeys, zebras, buffalo and antelope. I recommend snacks for the car as it is a full/half day experience. There was wheelchair friendly paths however I did not review them. I was stunned to find such a hidden gem!

I went for a hike here with some friends. The entrance fee was atound 50 per person and around 30 for vehicle access. We could not use cash when we visited. There wildlife to be seen and there is not much here besides the hikes and a self drive around. However, it seems excellent for cycling, and there were quite a few cyclists. It is very safe. The park is beautiful, and the hiking trail is excellent. There is almost no litter at all. The hike is a good deal harder than hennops and cradlemoon, so be warned. iMy watch tells me it was an 1800m elevation ii over 11.7 km. I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes hiking. FYI, there is no implacable implacable implacable iiiiiito one one 6666⁶66666or drinks here. I imagine it could get very hot here. There is very little cover during the majority of the hike so hats and sunscreen highly advised.

Great trails 2 downsides , facilities are run down and not taken care of, it’s nasty to see the amount of toilet paper 🤢 on the trails. Create more awareness on keeping it clean.

Entrance is R80 (Fee to enter the reserve and hike). Card payments only! An absolute massive nature reserve on the outskirts of town so you can reconnect with nature. I completed the Bokmakierie trail (17km). Towards the end of the 17km trail i saw signage indicating to go left to join the cheetah trail. If you turn left here and keep walking up you'll see a cairn (stacked rocks) turn right and u can head back to the entrance. Trails are marked well though so you shouldn't get lost . The Bokmakierie trail is definitely scenic. You're surrounded by rolling dry bushveld hilltops. The terrain is sandy and uneven with rocks. Unfortunately, spotting animals is rare, i think i might have seen a single Eland. There are lots of birds. In terms of difficultly i consider this to be moderate. If you've been hiking you'll complete it fairly easily. There are definitely some long gradual and steep ascents to get those quad muscles burning. Make sure to park by the picnic area to start either the Bokmakierie or Cheetah trail. The Cheetah trail is 4.5km which would be considered easy. The Bokmakierie trail is adequate enough to give you a nice workout with nice views as well. Enjoy!

What a wonderful, well-kept secret. I wish the failure of provincial government was not so stark though. The place is falling to pieces with zero maintenance and the litter on the trails, in the parking lot and picnic area was very disappointing. However, in saying this, the hikes are challenging with a few to choose from. Paradise for cyclists as there is plenty of space for them to ride in freedom and lower risk from motorists. The staff at the main gate were friendly. We were given an information pamphlet at the gate. While fairly informative, the pamphlet was carelessly put together, with a page missing but another one duplicated. It took us (and several other guests) a few minutes to find out where the trails start as the signage is faded and very poor. Once you find your way all is well and the trails are more than adequately marked. I do feel that it is worth the visit, I just wish that effort was put in by those who have been trusted to do so. You have failed and are allowing a gem to decay! A little effort can change everything.

Beautiful, large nature reserve with day and overnight hikes and a 55 km cycling/driving route to explore the valleys and pleateau. The highest point in Gauteng is situated in the reserve. Sadly many of the previous facilities such as an info centre, the alternative entrance gate and picnic sites are poorly maintained and an eyesore. Make sure to take everything you need to enjoy a day out.

Great getaway not far out of the city. Trails for hikers, runners and bikers (road & single track). We hiked the Cheetah (4km) loop with the kids on our back. At the top of the hill there's a single bench where you can enjoy the view. Next to the parking lot there's a great playground for the kids with a few benches and picnic tables under the trees. Entrance fees: Adults: R40 Kids: R30 (Not sure at what age it starts, our kids under 2 went in for free) Car: R30 *Very important > Card payments ONLY

Didn't know what to expect and cyclists, hikers, serious and less determined health fanatics, this is the place to go. Ample play area for kids too. There is also a museum.

A beautiful big nature preserve. The road route through the park is 66km long, and offers some amazing views, great to cycle. Not many animals to be seen. More visitor support would definitely improve the upkeep of the facilities as that was probably the worst part.

What a lovely place! The 10 km or above 10 km hike routes are no joke. Not for the faint hearted. You have to be very fit to do them or you will take verrrrry long. Extra hot sunny days makes it more tough. Other than that, it is beautiful and green. I enjoyed the 10 km alot, will do it again this year. Saw some animals in the distance. R80 entry fee, we could only pay by card

This place is a wonderful break from the busy Johannesburg. Just an hour's drive from city central. You go there to relax in nature and take in the views from the hills, valleys and plains the place has to offer. There are 3 hiking trails that are well marked and for different fitness levels. When done with your hike, make sure you take the tourist route around the reserve. Entrance fee is R35 per person and R40 for a car. Be sure to be there early to avoid the congestion at the gate and on the trails.

Our visit to Suikerbos was long overdue. On arrival we learnt that there was a big fire in October 2021. We decided on the 10km. What a beautiful hike. Visiting during the week is quiter not many people on the trail. Check your fitness level if u decide on the 10km and above. Its a moderate to not too difficult walk. The ups are a stretch and the downs are quick. Sun screen up as you spend most of the trail out in the open. The views are awesome. Midway we stopped for a packed lunch.

Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve is the most peaceful place that I've ever visited. It is completely silent and you do not see signs of civilisation while you're hiking. So you feel like you're far away from Johannesburg, but the city is less than an hour away. It's only 20 minutes away from The Glen Shopping Centre in Oakdene and about 25 minutes from Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve. If you're hiking in summer bring lots of cold water, if you can freeze it it's even better. It's hot in Suikerbosrand. The hills are layed out on a vast landscape, walking here feels like a meditation.

Good scenic trail they offer 10km and 17km, and they have a picnic place to chill after the hike. Best advise wear proper hiking boots/good trainers with a grip the trail gets slippery especially after the rains and it's also Rocky

The 10 kilometres trail is challenging with about 400-450m elevation gain. It’s marked, but I felt like some spots also needed markings in between. There’s no shops so you have to bring your own snacks and drinks. There’s braai area available to use so you can have a nice picnic with family afterwards. They don’t sell anything so bring everything you want to eat 👊🏽. There’s guards at the main entrance, then plenty of parking inside. Overall, I am gonna go back again, it’s good.

Beautiful hike and well marked route. With a decent picnic area, just unfortunate that there are no working ablutions. Some rubbish on trail and clear that some parts of trail are used as toilets. Buildings a little shabby, so can definitely do with some serious maintenance.

Intermediate hike, and I say that because it’s a bit rocky and steep for most of the hike so you get tired easily. We saw a baboon on our hike and a lot of little insects. The markings are there but not very clear and the map they provide is not really the greatest either. We went March 2024 and they DON’T accept cash, card payment only. Entrance fee was R45pp AND R35 per car. Come with a sun hat as the routes aren’t shaded for the most part.

I'm only rating this purely on the cycle me and the family enjoyed here. Due to covid I am not rating the facilities or anything extra. The park is currently in a beautiful state! We really enjoyed all of the scenery and in terms or a cycle ride, it was an extremely enjoyable ride, very tough at the start but worth it!

We did the 10km version of the Bokmakierie Trail and personally, after having taken a hike hiatus for a week or so, it was strenuous and I was breathing heavily at some points after climbing - but I absolutely loved it! Well-marked. Take enough water for the hike and have an extra bottle in the car for a after hike sip. Oh! there's an 11.5km version of Bokmakierie as well, will try that next time.

The Bokmakierie trail is a long but beautiful trail. You must need to have a level of fitness for this walk as there are some steep hills to climb. The walk is out in the open and no water on the way, so make sure to bring lots of water with you! There are not many hikes doing the long trail. There is however an opportunity to do the shorter trail which is around 5km. A real good day out! Look out for the wildebeest and zebra.

Entrance fee for myself and car was R80. There is 10km green and 11.5km yellow trail. I have never seen any wildlife. Start hiking around 08:00, a good hiker will take 2 to 3 hour to complete without rest, and average hiker 4 to 5 hours to complete. You will find yourself finishing around lunch time. If you feeling lazy or have kids rather explore the reserve and scenery in your car. Cycling is allowed inside the reserve road, the elevation change is tough. Overall good scenery, no wildlife, limited trail option and there is entrance fee.

The biggest herd of Eland we have ever seen. Stunning now that it is getting greener. Great cycling practice for hubby (insane inclines - but he loves it). Loses one star just because there does not seem to be any maintenance happening. Entrance especially is full of weeds and not all that appealing looking... but don't be put off, it's a lovely spot in side.

Awesome way to spend the morning. The location is great, very convenient and not far. Cost wise it’s only R35 so really affordable and you get a very clean well maintained reserve for the money and clean ablutions. The route I chose was the longer of the two 10-17km and it’s really beautiful. Challenging for me as a novice but so enjoyable. Highly recommend. Not a single bad thing to report back.

This is a beautiful hiking spot. The dry set of pics was in October 2019 and the greens was in January 2020. Met friendly hikers here, the trail is well marked and great mountains. Love the views once you reach the top. Only thing I dread is the morning queue at the entrance, its well managed though.

The Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve is a great spot for any cyclist want to train in a safe environment. A full lap of around 58km has approximately 1300m of elevation gain. It is a tough and demanding training course. Plan for each lap to take approximately 2-3 hours. The reserve is approximately 45 minutes from central Johannesburg. You will need to pay an entry fee as it is a national reserve and please note that only card payments are possible. It is an absolutely stunning place to ride your bicycle. Pristine roads without potholes, surrounded by wildlife and steep climbs are some of it's main features. Please be aware that there are some tricky and fast downhills, please exercise caution. There is poor cellphone signal in some parts and it would be difficult to access help in an emergency. It can also be very windy in this area and this makes the fast downhills even more tricky. It is best to enter via the entrance on Heideilburg road and this has th easiest access to the main parking area. There are a few braai spots near the main parking where you can enjoy a picnic or braai after your ride.

The information centre has closed the auditorium. No water at picnic spots only at main office. The picnic spot in the middle of game drive is closed and overgrown and we were not informed beforehand, so had to wait to braai for my kids at the end of the drive. I remember the roads and pathways being well looked after. Looks like that will be our last visit there.

This is a wonderful nature reserve close to Joburg. There are three hikes, the Cheetah which is 4.5 km and the Bokmakirie which is 10 or 17 km depending on the route. There is also a drive. The buildings and facilities are a bit tired, but the Cheetah hike was well sign-posted and there is a good map with interesting facts. The Cheetah trail is fairly easy, but it is rocky.

An amazing place to cycle and hike. Down side, though, is payments are cashless, but singal is poor, so there is a long queue to get in in the morning. And it is sad to see how delapedated and unkept the facilities like the office and bathrooms are. The bathrooms are actually quite shocking. But in terms of nature it is awesome.

Suikerboschrand Game Reserve has always been one of my favourite places in Gauteng. During Lockdown no activities are taking place here. However under normal conditions there are still the picnic/braai areas. These are beautiful in summer when there are good rains. It's very relaxing to be out in the open air. There are several hiking and cycling trails. There are overnight huts for weekend hikers and cyclists. One sad part of this beautiful place is that the information video's are no longer screened in the auditorium outside of Lockdown.

It's just a shame that there is no water. So you should just remember to go to the toilet before you go to Suikerbosrand, and remenber lots of water. Lots and lots of water. Trust me. Somewhat neglected like all public spaces these days, but walks, bike trails and kids play area are well utilized. No shop so take everything with you for a picnic. Entry price slightly more expensive than on the website (R40 adult/R30 child & pensioner/R30 car), but an inexpensive day out.

Very well kept nature reserve, hiking trails are easily accessible and visible from a distance. However, there is a lack of signage throughout the reserve which resulted in us taking the wrong trail. So instead of 10km we ended up on the 17km trail. The lack of signage is the only downfall I would say, other than that it is an awesome reserve with beautiful scenery.

Nice hiking trails, R40 entrance for adult & R30 per vehicle. They only take electronic payments. I think if they could take bookings and payments in advance it could reduce the que at the gate. I spent 20 minutes waiting to enter.

The Reserve is well kept but could use more local support. The toilets need to be opened to the public visiting though, especially when there are kids, well even the elderly. The staff were helpful.

In a day and age when everyone is seeking the the fresh air of the big outdoors, Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve is a great venue for hikers and cyclists alike. The reserve offers overnight accommodation for those looking for a getaway in the tranquillity of nature, but you don't need to stay over as day visitors get to enjoy the 'private roads' and hiking trails through the hills too. The offers secure parking and ablution facilities before you head out for your respective exercise regime. Hikes include a 5, 10.5 and 12.3km hike over hilly terrain.

Amazing peaceful and clean environment, took a while to find the animals but was worth it

  • 3/5 Freddie V. 3 years ago on Google
We have been visiting the reserve now for close to forty heard and it still remains ons of pur favorite places. When younger we usedt to do the overnight hiking trails om a regular basis. It was always a good experience. We have been there for the game drive and a picknic today and it was again a good experience. It is just a pity that there is sich a decline in the condition of the facilities. The sanitation infrastructure is nog working and it is a pity that the picknic area at Holhoek is completely closed down.

it is a good place to go to you can drive up the mountain but when i went there i didnt see much animals except for a TON of zebra, some wildebeest, blesbok, hartebeest and mongoose near the roads.. there are a ton of widows on the mountain like the red breasted widows and the long tailed widows.. great scenery just no animals..

The perfect method of removing Johannesburg from Johannesburg. Walking with thunder and partner beats the glum humdrum of bad cities. Go hike

A beautiful place to visit in the country side only 1 hour from Johannesburg. Unfortunately, the visitor facilities are non-existant, if you want to stay and picnic. But the views are incredible.

Lovely place. I enjoyed the 10 km hike, definitely looking forward to the 17 km hike soon. Reasonable entrance, plus well marked hiking trails. Didn't get to see any animals but really loved the scenery. unfortunately the toilets didn't have any running water but at least they did have enough sanitisers. Always remember to pick up the map from the office if you intend to go hiking.

A tough trail but good. After 4 hours, I didn’t see any wildlife apart from baboons. Maybe my huffing and puffing chased them away.

  • 4/5 Rutendo K. 2 years ago on Google
Great hiking trail. The 4.5km one is not too hard, ideal for the whole family. The play area is great, there are trampolines and a jump gym in perfect condition. Benches and shaded area to sit while the kids are playing.

Had an absolutely beautiful morning hike, and I also saw a cycling trail for those who cycle. A vast variety of shrubs, plants, trees and all other vegetation which was incredible to see. As well as the insects and birds. The trail was challenging, but absolutely worth it. Just a side note, do not go hiking after heavy rains as the terrains will still be wet and essentially dangerous.

Disappointed with the lack of general maintenance invasion plants all over, grass and weeds growing in the road. Meditation huts completely destroyed, the Damwall broken near the huts. Picnic site overgrown and not operational. If you can look pass all of this then you see the beauty

The hike I did was very steep and took me long but the reward of getting to the top of the mountain was so worth it. The views there are breath taking and it's so peaceful and quite. It's an amazing place to just go on a hike and have a pick nick after wards

It's always great to be able to spend some time in nature on a fresh morning hike. Well marked 10 km trail, pitty that some people do not know how to keep the environment clean though. You would think that a nature lover would take their bottles and plastic with to dispose of outside the reserve not on the hike.

Nice place for a Family Day out. Workers at the entrance is very helpfull and friendly. Just a pity the picnic area is closed.

👍👍 Enjoyable trip to Marievale. Very clean and tidy. Water levels are generally lower in winter. More birds in summer with the increase in water levels and insects. The birds hides are clean, and provide an opportunity to sit and watch/take photos of birds.
