Thimphu Memorial Chorten aka Gongzok Chorten was built in 1974 in memory of His Majesty the 3rd Druk Gyalpo (King) of Bhutan by Her Majesty the then Queen Mother, Now Royal Grand Queen Mother. It is one of the most beautiful landmark and tourist destinations in the heart of Thimphu.

An iconic Buddhist stupa located in Thimphu, Bhutan. National Memorial Chhorten was built in 1974. The architecture is excellent. I got a wonderful opportunity to participate in the worship done by monks inside the Chhorten. A must visit place in Bhutan.

1000 Nu per head entry fee makes it not a worth visit. Nice ground with a stupa and people who comes to worship circles the stupa in clockwise direction. Tashi yoedling hotel nearby offers great view of this place. Take a room there rather than a visit inside.

The Memorial Chorten also known as Thimphu Chorten/Memorial Stupa is one of the mostly visited monuments by locals to shuffle meditatively around the chorten, daily worship and to offer butter lamps. It attracts tourist with its elegant architecture and has great art work, wall carvings and sculptures of Buddhist culture.

The Memorial Chorten in Thimphu was built in 1974 in memory of the third king of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, who is considered the "father of modern Bhutan" for his efforts in modernizing and developing the country. The chorten was built as a place for people to pay their respects and offer prayers to the late king and to promote peace, prosperity, and well-being for the nation and its people.

The National Memorial Chorten was built in memory of Third Druk Gyalpo and is dedicated to World Peace. The chorten is a large white structure crowned with a golden spire in the back drop of mountain range. It is located close to the center of Thimphu city and is one of its most iconic monuments. Visitors will find elderly Bhutanese people circumambulating the Chorten throughout the day. Chorten literally means ‘Seat of Faith’ and Buddhists often call such monuments, the ‘Mind of Buddha’. The Chorten is an extraordinary example of Buddhist architecture and artwork with its gorgeous paintings and intricate sculptures. Beautiful scenic beauty to catch in camera for unforgatable memory. Entry charge wasINR 100 per head in 2019 Dec.

Visited on 26th August 2022. This stupa was built in 1974 to honor the third Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. It is popularly known as "the most visible religious landmark in Bhutan". This stupa does not enshrine human remains. Only the Druk Gyalpo’s photo in a ceremonial dress adorns a hall in the ground floor.

National Memorial Chhorten ( Thimpu) is one of many tourist attractions, the entrance fee of which is Rs. 500 per person. The entire campus is beautifully developed and well maintained. Devotees can be seen moving around and sitting all around the campus!! Visit and experience yourself!! The Memorial was constructed in 1974 by the present king in the memory of his father!!

The Thimphu Chorten, also called the Memorial Stupa, stands as a significant monument in Bhutan's capital, Thimphu. Situated on Doeboom Lam near the primary roundabout and the Indian military hospital, this stupa was constructed in 1974 to pay homage to the third Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck (1928–1972). Adorned with golden spires and bells, it is a well-known city landmark. In 2008, the stupa underwent extensive restoration, and it is widely recognized as "Bhutan's most prominent religious symbol." Dudjom Jigdral Yeshe Dorje consecrated this sacred site.

WHITE, CLASSICAL & ELEGANT STUPA !  The Vase shaped chorten of almost 50 years in city centre.  Inside explore paintings, statues, shrines, carvings ETC… all so beautiful.  Study the exterior and interior carefully to get an insight of Buddhist philosophy.  Top floor gallery offers a spectacular city view.  There are in total 4 entrances, but just one is in use.

The Gongzo Chorten is built in the memory of our great 3rd king Jigme Dorji Wangchuck (Father of Modren Bhutan). It was the wish of king to built stupa which represents mind of the Buddha when he was alive. So unfortunately king passed away without fulfilling his wish and later the chorten was built on memorial of our great King. It's was built in the year 1974 and some extensive renovation was carried out in 2008. It is designed in Jangchup chorten.

Also known as the Thimphu Chorten, this Stupa is situated in Thimphu, Bhutan and is considered as one of the most visible religious structure of Bhutan. Built in the memory of the third Druk Gyalpo King of Bhutan, the National Memorial Chorten is devoted to World Peace. The word “Chorten” translates to “Seat of Faith”, and the structure itself has become an important part of the Bhutanese culture. Due to its architectural and deep connection with Bhutan’s rich culture, it is one of the most popular religious place in Thimpu, Bhutan. We visited there on January 2nd 2014 and believe me, it is one of the most calm and serene shrine and is so well maintained. The surrounding is so clean that one would feel like you are in a European country. Sharing some pics of the shrine as well its surrounding. A must visit place.
