I love this pub. Very friendly and inviting with a wide variety of choice. The food is fabulous and definitely value for money. We have been here on many occasions and will continue to frequent it when we in town. Highly recommended.

Paid a visit to this very well kept, neat and characterful Edwardian era pub, after reading reviews on it. Really enjoyed the period architecture, fittings and historical theme remembering veterans of the First World War ( hence its name ); all tastefully and sympathetically done, with a relaxed, cosy atmosphere. While there, enjoyed a really well prepared and tasty serving of their Norton's ale battered haddock and chips, along with a signature Norton's gin and tonic. All well presented by friendly staff and good value for money, as a pub dinner. The rest of their menu looks equally interesting and I'd definitely visit again when passing. Can definitely recommend. Well done 👍to the team on duty there and hope to revisit soon 😀.

Traditional pub located next to snow hill train station. Had 1 pint craft keg and 2 halves real ale when I visited. Decent beer selection maybe 8 or so real ales and the usual keg beers and 1 or 2 craft beers on tap. The 2 real ales which I had were both ok but served too warm for me. The purity session ipa was perfectly fine. The prices were very expensive in comparison to pubs within the local area. In future I will drink at alternatives and walk 5 minutes rather than here. All in all an OK pub, other than the price nothing was particularly good or bad.

We visited this pub while visiting Birmingham from Canada in late May. It is a proper pub with a fantastic history, decor and atmosphere. We visited twice, first during a very busy Thursday evening and again, on a quiet evening the following week. Both visits provided us with differing but equally enjoyable experiences. In total, we ordered the very generous fish and chips, sausages with mash potatoes and a mouth watering onion sauce, steak and ale pie with vegetables. We washed it down with pints of Peroni and Carling beer. On both occasions, we were served by absolutely wonderful staff members. Even on the very busy first visit, our server was aware that our orders were a bit late (we hadn't even noticed). She apologized and offered us a free desert (a pleasant surprise indeed) Many Kudos to her!. On our second visit, we were well taken care of by a friendly male server. We felt like very valued customers.....this is a very proper pub indeed! Thank you for such memorable experiences at your establishment! We highly recommend The Old Contemptibles when visiting Birmingham City Centre.

Fantastic looking establishment and great selection of ales and beer right in the heart of Brum or near enough the middle anyway! Staff also pretty friendly, but my goodness the look of the place! Great if you want a pub with a big open old timey vibe!

Called into this pub for a bite to eat with my friend whilst out in Birmingham. From outside we weren’t sure what to expect, but wow loved the way the inside looks. It’s fabulously dressed with hops and old wood. Really creates a great atmosphere. We both ordered food and few glasses of wine later, we had a fabulous afternoon here. Compliments to the kitchen on my food, I think it’s the best chicken salad I’ve ever eaten out. Looked like a high end restaurant meal. Just wow! We shall most definitely return and tell all our friends. Thanks to all.

We had a great server, George, who looked after us for our stay. He was very helpful and made sure we had a pleasant experience. I tried to order a bottle of White Zinfandel on the app but the option wasn’t there to so I had to go to the bar. As soon as George saw me, he can over and served me which was nice as the bar was busy.

The reason it’s only a 2 star review is the astronomical price of beers, it’s a nice place but it’s just too expensive, I’d say it’s one of the most expensive bars in brum, and for what, over £7 a pint, and one pint was an ale at 3.8% I asked how come this place is so expensive, and they replied it’s for the general upkeep😳 if you have an afternoon in there you’d probably be able to pay for a rear extension to the pub. Nice.. but not that nice.

Popped in for a drink after meal at Indian Brewery. Still one of the better/proper pubs in centre. Unfortunately wasn't drinking but real ale choices looked plentiful. Good, friendly atmosphere. Been for food in past and was impressed.

Called in here with my wife for the first time before going to the Hippodrome. I’d read the reviews and all was good. We’ll it lived up to its reputation. The service was A1 as was the food. Had a great pint of Guinness too. We sat close to the entrance /bar on high tables which was cosy but there were regular tables throughout. Same outside and partially under cover, nice to see folk stood outside too. The menu was varied & good, I tried one of their pies and loved it. We ordered via the app that we found with the menu, all easy and the food came out in very good time. The lady serving us was very friendly and polite and cleared our tables in good time after we’d finished which is always a good sign. A very nice pub, well run so will definitely recommend to family & friends and call in again. We’ll done The Old Contemptibles 👍

Lovely pub with a nice atmosphere, but the beers were awful, i only drink real ales and ended up drinking Guinness. I tried Salcome, UBU and sampled a couple of others, very disappointed, no head and no mouth feel. £16.75 for 3 pints!

Great atmosphere, fun pub , not pretentious but amazing architecture. Guinness is very well kept! Well looked after with pretty hanging baskets and plenty of outdoor seating

We arrived as a group of 5 sixty year olds just intent on having a small social drink; which we did very well. Congratulations to the staff who managed to find us a suitably large table at the back following their food service closure. There was an excellent choice of beers, several of which we were able to enjoy. A nice and relatively quiet place to enjoy and evening drink.

Really nice traditional pub near snow hill station. Just had drinks on our visit but food looked good. Round was a little expensive but the environment and atmosphere is really good. Be careful of the stairs to the toilet though as they can be a bit steep

First time visiting a Nicholson's Pub and so glad it was this one. We booked in advanced and asked to be away from the TV (as Rugby was going to be on) and we were put in the back room and it was so lovely and peaceful and away from the crowd. It was just me and my Mum and it was so nice to have a sit down meal and a catch up. We are both Vegetarians and we didn't think much of the option for the mains so we made up our own main meal with starters and sides and it was sooooo gorgeous!! We had the Tomato and Shallot tartlet, halloumi fries and triple cooked chips along with cocktails and drinks and honestly it was the nicest meal we have had in ages. We will 100% be coming back to The Old Contemptibles. The app was easy to us to order or you can order at the desk or staff also come over so there is lots of options. The toilets were clean as well and the whole experience was great!

Only went here for a quick drink so not much I can say about this place. That said staff were very friendly with good service. There was outdoor seating just outside the front of the pub which was lovely given it was a really warm evening.

A beautiful building, I was there for lunch mid week. Lovely friendly and prompt service. A varied menu but went for a favourite, fish and chips. Piping hot, large portion and delicious. Very relaxed atmosphere, I would go again, and would recommend.

Old school pub, even has a fruit machine! Had fish and chips, and a large coke. Old decor, great atmosphere in the centre of brum. Very rare nowadays.

This is as proper traditional pub as you can get and a great advert for the city. Nice history as well when I asked one of the staff who kindly took the time to explain a few things. For us it’s regular stop off every time we go into Birmingham. Super friendly staff and always good atmosphere. Did I also mention the great selection of beers and spirits on offer too 👍

Great atmosphere. Went on a Friday night and somehow they've managed to pull off the trick of having a very busy half and a more spacious half. Very clever. And even though they were busy I got served within a couple of minutes each time. And parking right outside after 7.30 was free! Excellent place to meet up with friends - next time I'll try the food. Highly recommended!
