Dinner The Wilderness Rock and Roll fine dining. This restaurant is located in the Jewellery Quarter part of Birmingham. Its been described as dark and moody with open kitchen and pumping music. Well it is dark as the decor is black. Fortunately it was still daylight and the sun was shining through the roof skylights. We have been there at night and you might need a head torch to see your dinner🤣 Once sat at your table you scan a QR code to view the menu. As we were early doors at 6.00pm they have a 9 course tasting menu for £100pp. This sort of dining seems to be the norm now in restaurants of this calibre. It's a chance to try different dishes that you would probably not choose if it were A la carte. First course is a sourdough flatbread topped with caviar and trout. Next was sweetbreads with a very nice hot sauce. "Slushie" sorbet Orkney scallop in a Thai green sauce Cooked to perfection and delicious. Seaweed salad - would of not ordered this if there was a choice. But OMG who knew it would be absolutely flavoursome. Welsh Lam rib was devoured in seconds and we could eaten a bowl full of them. Cornish duck was one of the best duck dishes we have ever had,and we have had quite a few in our time. "Mr Whippy" think ice-cream with curry sprinkles. Lastly was life and death of a strawberry which finished off the evening perfectly. With its open kitchen you can watch Alex Claridge's lovely team at work. Service was friendly and brisk. The music wasn't that loud for a Saturday night. If you want relaxed fine dining without the faff, then get yourselves here. Review helpful please like 👍 follow thanks.

Great food and atmosphere. In comparison to other fine dining restaurants, The Wilderness has that “underground” feel to it - as opposed to the overly stuffy service you’ll get at most tasting menu’s. You really feel like you are eating somewhere special; off the beaten track. One of my favourite restaurants, and a must visit if you come to Birmingham.

What a wonderful birthday celebration. We had a lovely leisurely family lunch with extremely attentive friendly service and amazing food. Really unique cocktail and wine list too. Thank you Wilderness team. P.S. if you are wondering whether to go for the £75 or the £100 menu, as we were, go for the £100 one - no regrets!

The Wilderness. Unique. Incredible. Exceptional. The Wilderness had been on our list for an extraordinary amount of time and it was definitely worth the wait and the money. The atmosphere felt like a contradiction: intimate, yet eclectic, casual yet extraordinary. We knew the only thing not to be contradicted was the food. Be prepared to be swept off your feet with delicious flavours exploding in your mouth. Every morsel was as decadent as the last! We went for the 12 course meal, without the wine pairing - which is definitely worth it! The produce is seasonal and fresh. Fantastic service with knowledgeable and friendly staff, they made our experience thoroughly enjoyable. Not a fault. Can't wait to come back for more... Instagram Handle: @lifesansguilt

We had an absolutely incredible experience at the Wilderness. It’s such an intimate restaurant, staff were lovely and attentive, very knowledgeable about the food and drinks pairings. We decided to go for menu 110 with a Mixed Flight and the whole evening was just perfect.

Surprising at every turn. "why the hell would you put x with y?!" Turns out it's a hellish good combination. The paired drinks are very well explained well worth a go. I would be surprised if this place doesn't have a star next time they give them out

Had such a lovely evening yesterday. Staff, friendly and helpful, clear to see that they enjoy working here. Food was amazing we was all really sad when it was our last course because we didn't want the evening and the food to end. The lovely relaxed atmosphere created was a real winner for me. Please put on your website that tips can be only made in cash because we didn't have any cash and felt really bad that we was unable to leave a tip.

I went a few months back when they were doing a vegan menu and the food/atmosphere was amazing. The non-alcoholic drinks menu was very creative. Great experience and service.

This small restaurant in Birmingham is spectacular. The tasting menu was outstanding with no uninspired dishes. Delightfully prepared and elegantly served with a smile. The background music was not obtrusive, though personally I would have been happy either way, as it was exactly what I liked. Wholly 100% recommend...

Wonderful experience. Clearly one of, if not the best, restaurant in the West Midlands. Not a 'smart' silver service kind of place, but unique, casual and interesting. Superb, novel dishes with great drink (alcoholic) pairing. Black decor throughout, but not too dark & great rock music, loud enough to hear, but not overpowering. Fabulous.

There is a orchestrated rhythm to Harborne Kitchen as you, the honourable guest, are presented with the staff, a comfortable table and the articulate crafted dishes. I lean towards vegetarian cuisine, these are appropriately catered for in a 4,6 or 8 dish set menu offering. Being a person that sits firmly on the fence I went for the 6. Each dish arrives like clockwork to meet its Michelin star awarded tempo. The food is presented beautifully; I try my utmost to appreciate every flavourful note. It is an adventure for the senses; the Roscoff Onion was my favourite. A ballsy hit from the blue cheese set my senses alight. Service was professional, yet warm and earthy. There are few places in Brum where you can experience humble elegance like this. It is special and if you love food should be on your visit list.

Their food is amazing. The portion sizes are just right and their menu choices are fab! I would reccomend it for mostly adults as kids under the age of 11 or kids who are fussy would not like it. The seats at where you can see the chef's cook is the best I think. Each course was mouth watering. I can't wait to go back again.

Not our first rodeo and always an absolute delight 😍 The food is absolutely DIVINE, the presentation is wonderful, the ambience is friendly and inviting, the venue is quirky and interesting, and the tastes are nothing short of SPECTACULAR. Don't wanna spoil the surprise but want to give you an idea of how great this place is, so here's just a couple of pics 😁 In short, it's 3 hours of total bliss and it's worth every penny in my humble opinion. It's like nothing else and is SO much more than dining out. Can't wait to go again 😍 Big love and praise to the team - keep doing what you do, it's AWESOME! 🙌🏽😁

What a special place this! Very inventive menu, and the effort of having a drinks flight that had unique cocktails to go with the food was outstanding. Everyone needs to visit, can't wait till we go back.

Easily one of the best tasting menus I have ever tried. The portions, although small, unlocked flavours I didn’t know existed. Worth the slightly more expensive cost for sure. Extremely friendly and welcoming staff, and the atmosphere is a real vibe. Would highly recommend, particularly for special occasions.

Amazing evening at this wonderful unorthodox restaurant in centre of the jewellery quarter in Birmingham. A guest chef did half of the courses whilst the resident kitchen produced the rest. Amazing flavours and great contrast in tastes. The music added to the atmosphere. A bit of Ozzy with your monkfish goes down very well.

Stunning restaurant! Stumbled upon this find whilst staying in Birmingham on a training course with work, i'd definately visit again just to eat here! The food was out of this world! Never tasted flavours quite like it! The quirkiness off the restaurant just added to it! The staff was very polite, and made us feel very welcome! Thank you!

Would give Wilderness 6 stars if I could. The food is always sublime; flavourful and quirky. I have no idea why they have missed out on a Michelin star. The eating experience is always enhanced by some banging tunes and lovely front of house staff.

Amazing ( as always) you can’t try this at home! Great vibe with dark decor and wild wings pick music with a bit of an anarchic theme this week. Staff are well informed, efficient and obviously love what they do. Its cool and unpretentious unlike so many Michelin restaurants. The food will blow your mind in its presentation and also flavour combinations. Book now for an unforgettable experience.

Wow!! Outstanding food, superb attentive service, and an awesome atmosphere (with quality rock music playlist that you can find on spotify). With the news this week that carters will be leaving Birmingham, we are delighted to finally get to try this place, that is the heir apparant to it. Already booking our next visit. Expensive, but totally worth it.

We'd booked to go to The Wilderness a while ago but unfortunately COVID came along and ruined our original plans. We finally visited for lunch on Saturday and it's fair to say it was worth the wait. We decided to go for the ten course tasting with a couple of glasses each of the 'hacked' wines. Upon taking our seats we were each given a complimentary glass of Prosecco and water and our meal began. The mix of courses were fantastic; starting with crispy pig cheek with an apricot gel and taking in steak tartare, turbot and mackerel along the way. Highlights were a fantastic beetroot ice-cream served with a rich ajoblanco and a tremendous mushroom and 'bread pudding' dish which was like the best version of mushrooms on toast you could possibly imagine. Service was slick throughout, each course was delicious and the wines were great, particularly the Chardonnay 2.0 and the Vermouth. The meal wasn't the cheapest but the food, service, ambience and music made it all well worthwhile.

I just love the place. Great cuisine supported by excellent service. Staff are professional and v friendly. But obviously the food has to be the star of the show and be assured it is. The number and variations of dishes provided doesn't always mean you will love everything presented but that is an opportunity to experience alternative delights that to be honest you wouldn't normally choose. Have attended several times and cant wait for the next time. But you do have to save up to visit. PS I happen to love the music played also so another good reason to go!

Great food, creative, well put together and structured, with meaning and well connected with all ingredients. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable, with good standard and aiming for a great food experience. My only negative comment was the time between courses and the matching drinks, this could have been somehow minimized, but would highly recommend for its audacity and cool approach to the all dinning experience. This place will definitely go far in the Birmingham scene!

Enjoyed a fabulous fine dining cookery class with Alex, Chef Patron of the Wilderness restaurant. Its amongst my favourite restaurants and doing this during lockdown was a culinary highlight. Delicious! Everything was good in here. I highly highly recommended this place.

Fantastic. Amazingly intimate dining experience. I would highly recommend a visit without hesitation. I was a touch disappointed with the drinks pairing though. But not enough to affect the rating I’d give.

Just wow! I don’t have enough words of praise for this place, the food they serve or the incredible staff that made the night so amazing. Each dish is meticulously prepared and presented, the matching wines bring out the flavours incredibly well, and the rock music is a nice touch. Very fun and approachable fine dining restaurant that will have you looking for any excuse to come back!!

I've just seen the proprietor on BBC Midlands Today, and footage of food being prepared in the kitchen. Chefs wearing T-shirts, and nothing on their heads to prevent hair from contaminating food. Very poor.

  • 4/5 Lucinda R. 4 years ago on Google
Excellent food. Great potential. Good points are that the chefs certainly know what they are doing. The Monkfish, Lamb and the Big Mac are well worth the visit. They do some delicious desserts and the chocolate skulls were a real highlight. I believe that sometimes they sell these for special occasions so I will certainly be investing in them at some point as they were absolutely perfect. The music was great, and the open kitchen allows guests to see what's happening which is another bonus as it makes the environment really relaxed. A lot like Harborne Kitchen. Unfortunately for us the experience wasn't quite what we expected. I had booked this for a weekday at 7.30pm so expected to be offered the £100 menu. The website clearly states the following: "Dinner menus are offered from £75 (short menu) or £100 (large menu) midweek, if your reservation is at 6pm you will only be offered the £75 menu". With this in mind I scoured the booking pages for ages searching a day when both of us were off work in the evening to ensure we had the larger menu offered and booked for 7.30. On arrival we were greeted with a glass of Prosecco each to celebrate a birthday. Nice touch. Very thoughtful and appreciated. We were taken to our seat then offered a £65 menu. Something I had not seen on their website. Nevertheless the menu was lovely. I asked the waitress why the £100 menu was not offered as I had booked and paid a £60 deposit for that menu. The waitress simply said it was only "this" menu tonight, and when pressed about it she finally said that three of the ovens weren't working so the whole menu could not be offered. Now this, I don't mind. Things happen. However, this restaurant is Michelin guide recommended. Therefore it would be expected some form of communication about this would have been offered. Unfortunately the staff at the Wilderness did not do this and as such we were left questioning what had happened. I even thought I had booked it wrong but in checking so I hadn't. It felt as if the staff hoped we wouldn't notice. But looking around the room at other guests there were quite a few confused faces. They are currently in the process of moving restaurant locations so there was an underlying feeling that perhaps the broken ovens had actually been moved out. The general decor was OK. The velvet curtains added a sense of warmth the seating area. However other things have become rather drab and worn. There is paint missing from the walls where it had been chipped off and the ladies toilets were below par. The seat was on at an angle and the door lock was hanging off the door and the floor was raised so it caught the bottom of the door when trying to shut it. It just didn't have that sense of a cared for restaurant. This may be put down to the fact they are moving locations but if they are still taking bookings then they should still be keeping the place up to scratch for the people who have never been before. All in all I would go again and would recommend the food. We just expected and wanted more of it. Perhaps the new venue will be far better. They might be experiencing teething problems with the move.

Phenomenal food in a totally unstuffy environment with extremely helpful staff and cool decor. The music is also another massive plus, no horrific jazz or dreadful R&B. I now wish I'd taken pictures of the food but it was so good, I'd eaten half of it before any thought of doing so had occurred to me. Will definitely visit again.

Lovely food and staff. Only marked down as some of the decor could do with a spruce up and the toilets aren't great for an establishment of this type. Neither of which would prevent us from visiting again without hesitation.

What a wonderful visit to The Wilderness last week. After a very warm welcome from Emma and KJ, I was shown to my table. I had the Taster Menu and it couldn't of been more special. The presentation and flavours were exceptional, with the making of each course being explained in detail by Loubie - the restaurant manager. All this with a great wine pairing and quality music playing in the background. Fine dining at its best. I would highly recommend a visit if you haven't yet had the pleasure.

I've been to Harborne Kitchen when we weren't in lockdown and had the best evening with my partner sitting at the bar with a bottle of Albarino and enjoying the delicious tasting menu brought over by such brilliant and helpful staff. We were completely blown away- thank you!

Hands down my favourite restaurant in Birmingham. I’ve tried the tasting menu a couple of times which has always been exceptional (wine pairing is also worth a go) and the four course menu last year was also fantastic and great value for money. The roscoff onion is definitely my favourite dish by them, but I can’t fault anything. Both the restaurant itself and the staff are also lovely. Can’t wait to return again one day!

The restaurant was cosy, elegant and subtly set up for social distancing, providing us with confidence without appearing too restricting. And the food exquisite - easily the best meal I've had in Birmingham. Each portion was larger than expected and packed with flavour. The allium dish was our favourite. Absolutely recommend.

A great blend of casual and fine dining with attentive service and good value. Me and my partner attended Harborne Kitchen post lockdown to sample their bar menu. We were sat at a partitioned table and proceeded to have a brilliant meal. The service was impeccable throughout and we would love to come back and try the full tasting course.

Back with a vengeance. Harborne Kitchen has been cleverly adapted to make guests feel safe and valued post-lockdown. The menu is mostly new and the cooking is on fire. The “allium” is outstanding as is the “scallop” in its gazpacho. Service is still excellent even though some of the embellishments have had to be curtailed for now. The vibe has been maintained and all in all it was an excellent night out.

The atmosphere and staff were all so lovely. I was worried about the tasting menu meal due to being vegan and having lots of other dietary requirements but the menu that they created for me was great. The food was so incredible, and still so full of flavour - hats off to the amazing kitchen staff and thank you for being so accommodating! Definitely will be back and would recommend to friends and family!

A fantastic restaurant that we cannot rate highly enough! We sat the chefs table and enjoyed the 8 course tasting menu! We loved every single minute! All members of staff are friendly and professional and really make the experience! We enjoyed sitting so close to the action on the chefs table and the chefs were happy to answer questions and chat throughout. Plus of course the food was magical! As a pescatarian, I especially appreciated how they offered a pescatarian option! The scallop with mushroom dashi was amazing! We remember when HK first opened in 2016 and it has been wonderful to see it go from strength to strength! It is an expensive experience (£220 for 8 courses plus alcohol for 2 people) but 100% worth the money for such as wonderful time! We visited for our anniversary and would recommend to anyone for a special occasion!

One of the best meals I've ever had! I've been fortunate enough to dine at several Michelin star restaurants and the Wilderness is on par for me food-wise with almost anything I've eaten. I love the chef's focus on variety - spectacular vegetable, fish and dessert courses as well as meat dishes. The drinks pairings were spot on, the service faultless and the atmosphere is so cool and relaxed. Great music selection too. My favourite restaurant in Birmingham and beyond.
