Chung Ying has been the culinary centre-piece of Birmingham's China Town for as long as I can remember. It look's awesome from the high street. Pundits rate it as one of Birmingham City Centre's best restaurants. Is it any good then? If there is hype, I have high expectations. When I was seated in the outdoor portion of the restaurant I began reading the menu. This consisted of 4 sheets of A4 paper with a long list of popular British Chinese menu options. I felt underwhelmed. Service was at a gentle pace, humble. Food was served piping hot, cutlery was arranged in the classic British Chinese way. If you do want drama added to your experience I would recommend ordering a sizzler dish. The quality of the food was excellent. The presentation was ok. Portions were good and value was excellent. Chung Ying is traditional and social. For me, it was less about the food and more about the old fashioned experience. It made me reminisce about the "good ol' days" enjoying Cantonese food with family,

Excellent restaurant as I found out the nearest you can get to culture if you are from HK. Dim sum 20% off 1-5pm per weekday. Rook some pictures as in what we've ordered that day. Nice lunch. Cash payment preferred.

The best Chinese Restaurant anywhere, ever. If you visit Birmingham you must eat here. The dim sum is Michelin quality and the service is fast and efficient. Main dishes are always tasty and portion sizes are generous. I have been visiting Chung Ying (and previously Chung Ying Gardens) for over 30 years, never had a disappointing meal or negative experience. A real gem in the centre of China Town, and a must try for Asian food enthusiasts.

A Chinese restaurant that serves a lot of varied dishes, and it also has a dim sum menu. I came here for a Saturday lunch and while it was busy, they still had some seating available. We booked in advance, but they didn't seem to have our reservation, but fortunately were still able to seat us. Service, while quick, was a little abrupt, but you can forgive them for the price we paid as 7 dim sum dishes only cost around £35, including tea for 2 people. They serve most of the dim sum dishes you would expect. While they are unlikely to be the best dim sum you can try, I can't think of another dim sum restaurant in Birmingham that has the choice they offer. So if you're craving dim sum, it might just tide you over and do the trick for you. Just don't expect to be blown away.

Queues out the door. Very friendly staff. Good food and reasonable prices (fixed menus £21/26/31) plus a huge set of individual choices. Food was served a bit slow but otherwise a good visit.

Called for lunch on 03/06/23 with my family who were visiting from Hong Kong. We have been to Chung Ying many times before but not in recent years. On this occasion front of house staff were unwelcoming and abrupt. Table service was prompt but there was no friendly conversation and we had to repeatedly ask for our bill. The food was nicely presented but portions were small for the price paid and most of the dishes we ordered tasted bland. The restaurant is clean, tables are ready for customers arriving and the decor is atmospheric. Overall, this is an expensive restaurant, the food lacks flavour and aspects of the service are weak. I would’ve expected better for the price paid. I cannot therefore recommend.

Nice restaurant to enjoy some delicious traditional Chinese Dim Sum and other main dishes. We came on a Saturday for a quick lunch, service was very prompt, food arrived hot, staff was very friendly. Only disappointment this visit, was some of the food wasn't as good as before. But we still enjoy coming and would recommend coming for some tasty food.

Food was good. But the waiters were extremely rude. The 10% mandatory service fee was charged and honestly i was not happy at all with services to pay for the tip. If you are looking for a better experience with Chinese food there are plenty of places around with the same quality and better service

Amazing food and service, we hired the upstairs room for my granddaughter first holy communion, lobster was beautiful, my niece's first time eating Scollops and she ate her body weight they were soooo nice. Then the karaoke 🎤🤣🤣 we are no singers. The staff were attentive and fun. Wonderful time. Thank you all

The venue is a little dated, maybe tired in places but the food was great and the staff were both efficient and pleasant The portions are very generous, our eyes were definitely too big for our bellies. Several of the main courses ( I'm looking at you lemon chicken) could easily be described as sharers Reasonable prices top off a satisfying experience The menu is vast, so I'll certainly be coming back to try more

Been here 3 times, the reason we chose to get back after the first time dissapointed because we thought maybe it just happened by chance, or they just had one bad day that day, so we gave them another 2 visits. We have noticed something: 1. The food were ok, quite Westernised to us. 2. You will definitely get served way better if you were a White customers, and below average service if you were East Asian looking. Not sure about other ethnicities. 3. The view is good. 4. The price generally is higher compared to the other Canton restaurants in town. And three times out of three we left unsatisfied with the service. Would have given them 0 star for service if I could. We won’t never come back.

Asked for Thai king prawn and got Chinese curry sauce with prawns just because you added coconut milk doesn't make it a Thai Curry!

I just adore this place. We came for dim sum this evening and left bursting at the seams. I have never tried dim sum anywhere else but I know it would never meet my expectations the way Chung Ying does. I’m veggie and adore the tofu wrap ones so much. Server was so friendly and we’ve never been disappointed.

Excellent Chinese food. It's not the cheapest place around but the quality of the food is superb, the menu is huge too. We had a selection of Dim Sum dishes and mains. Excellent Siu Mai, Prawn spring rolls, steamed buns and Duck with lettuce wraps. Excellent drink selection, we had a lovely bottle of Gavi (Italian white wine) Staff were so friendly and seemed to be enjoying themselves, there was a great atmosphere. Large tables are perfect for big groups too. Can't wait to return during the day to try the full Dim Sum menu

Absolutely delicious, best meal we've had in a while. We had a selection of the vegetarian and vegan dishes and enjoyed every single one. The mock duck pancakes and the spicy vegetarian dumplings were a highlight. We'll definitely be back ❤

The food was okay. The har gow was very very fresh but the ho fun was horrid. The meat has clearly been chemically treated for it to be tender and the ho fun was all stuck together. The scallops Cheung fun was very very fishy. Not fresh. Almost no servers spoke to us and the surrounding staff seemed very hostile.

Came for a pre-birthday dinner with couple of friends. Had a very enjoyable evening! The food was authentic and delicious and so was the ambience. Word of advice- book your table in advance. Even on a week day we had to wait to get a seating!

Bit more expensive but in my view worth it. Food was excellent: fresh, served piping hot and fast. Ambience is your typical bustling Chinese restaurant, busy and a bit chaotic with the decor still the same as 30 years ago. If you want delicious Chinese food and dim sum, I would really recommend giving this a try. Maybe book in advance to avoid being turned away.

I ate here before going to see Pretty Woman. It was busy,so I sat on patio. The food was tasty and loved the sizzling skillets. I missed the pretty garnish on starters that were served previously. Great wine choices too.

I had a lovely time with my boyfriend at the restaurant. It was my birthday and I really enjoyed the meals. I had dumplings for the first time and loved it. The noodles, ducks, rice, and spring rolls were delicious. The portions were also large enough. I took leftovers home and froze them, then ate them days after, and they still tasted great. The service was really good, the staff were so nice and really lovely, warm and comfortable atmosphere. Oh, and the prices were so reasonable for such good food and drinks. My boyfriend and I will definitely visit again.

Beautiful place and not too pricey either! Staff were really friendly and we will be back for sure! The dumplings were amazing and the won ton soup too was also tasty!!!!!!!!

Great food, especially dim sum during the day. In the evening it can be a challenge to get a table as they prioritise bookings over walk-ins so you may be told there is a 30 or 45 minute wait. The service can be a little slow also. But the food is definitely very good indeed.

Cracking food at a price. We got a range of dishes and 3 beers and each paid £50. You’ll enjoy every dish but with so much choice it’s always hard to know what to get at these places for an Asian food novice!

Went in the afternoon so not much atmosphere but top class service and food. Take a look at the lemon chicken and sizzling fillet steak photos. Delicious!

Vegan options available for dim sum and dishes. Be careful as there are some vegetarian dishes listed with the vegan options so it's worth double checking when ordering. We got some steamed buns with egg yolks inside that we weren't warned about. There's often offers on dim sum between set hours of the day so worth asking or checking their website when planning your visit. There's also a gluten-free menu if that is important to you.

Good dim sum and noodle dishes but not as good compared to others I’ve had. Was lucky to have a great CNY meal here with a wonderful lion dance.

The fish was over-steamed, the seafood was deep-fried until the meat was gone, and the dishes were as old as Lao Gan Ma,
