The staff was very friendly and provided me with explanations. Thanks for their warm service. It is a small but interesting museum.

Best gallery I have visited in Birmingham. Astonishing artist with thoughtful artworks. The curation of the exhibition is also brilliant. You could also walk beside the canal when you come visit.

I had a great time at Ikon gallery. It was my first time visiting an art studio on purpose, so I didn't know what to expect. Overall I think the ambience of the gallery is great. The exhibition on show on the day was really nice and unique. I particularly liked the exhibition done by the school kids. It was simple but impacting. It is free to see the exhibition and you can donate 5 pounds if you wish or find the work being done there as good and impactful.

Quirky, interesting, and fun. A place that really shows it's charms and gives back to local communities with free entry, hosting smaller artists and putting passion into the art. It is small, and that is a drawback to many, but I think to judge a place of contemporary art by it's timing is like taking in a painting purely by it's color composition - it's not understanding the whole experience. Pleasantly surprised. Believe exhibits change all the time, so hopefully can share this one I experienced in photo format without it spoiling the attraction too much

Saw the exhibition of “horror in the modernist block”. The installation are really interesting and the guide books provide useful introduction and information. The stuff are friendly. Nice place to have a leisure afternoon.

Art changes here every couple of months. Former Board School converted to art gallery in the 1990s. Glass lift. Exhibition space on 1st and 2nd floors. Can be used for functions.

The Gallery shows modern art rotating artists on a regular basis. Your enjoyment will depend on whether you like the displays at the time you visit. We very much liked one of the artists but not so much the other. The staff in the Gallery were very helpful and explained what the artists were all about. They definitely made a difference to our visit.

A compact Gallery for modern art. Very friendly and helpful staff. Don't miss using the lift between floors! Try it for both up and down the building.

Great exhibits, shop and cafe. The courtyard the Ikon overlooks is one of my favourite places in Birmingham too, especially worth a visit in Spring when the trees blossom.

Found the staff very nice, the building is also lovely. However must be honest. Modern Art is not something my wife and I find interesting we do try through. For the size of the building there was only a few exhibitions on. We find this the same were ever we see modern art ( The Baltic Newcastle being an example) I guess we will stick to the more classic gallery's in future. If your into modern are enjoy.

Lovely gallery, not too many exhibits, but a great place to spend time. Totally free.

The "art" was low effort modern art stuff. The building looks very nice from the outside. But the best thing about the building on the inside is the lift that makes a funny noise. It is free however, so maybe worth a look if you've got nothing else to do.

Loved the gallery. It's a famous art gallery and almost everyday there is an exhibition or two. There is also a store at the ground floor to buy postcards/souvenirs. The interior of this place was magnificent. Loved visiting there.

Interesting building. Not a big gallery, so it would not take you long to walk around. Small contemporary art displays. Nice little cafe and cute shop which sells lots of art books. Free entry.

It's a lovely building but didn't find the range of exhibits particularly inspiring. However, I loved the musical glass lift and would be happy to go up and down that several times. 😂😂

Handy to pop in to due to the central location. Rooms are big and for the exhibition I went to see it wasn't crowded so you had plenty of time to look and absorb the painting from different viewpoints. Handy notes available. There is also a shop and restaurant/cafe.

This is a beautiful modern art gallery in the cool Brindley Place complex. It is set over three storeys in an attractive building, and there is a laid-back café serving quality food and drinks on the ground floor with outdoor seating.

Our first visit to the Ikon specifically to see the small Carlo Crivelli exhibition. The nine works of this C15 century painter were well displayed for easy viewing. The accompanying exhibition guide was very informative. An enjoyable experience.

Had amazing experience with the current exhibitions to do with travel and world culture from a number of different artists. Be quick - not on much longer. It's a super gallery and we're so fortunate to have it...

Came here to kill time before an event nearby, but ended up losing track of time and having such a great time. We especially enjoyed the exhibition: Start the Press! Where we saw Hassebah Ali working with the most biggest Lino press I’ve ever seen. Apparently the gallery had to disassemble and rebuild the parts for its transportation. How do I know this? With the lovely courtesy of Hasna, one of the staff there who, with her charismatic friendliness and knowledge, enhanced our perception of this exhibition. The overall exhibition was beautifully designed to make interaction with the artist easy and open, and I must applaud all who were part of this project!

  • 5/5 Nick H. 1 year ago on Google
Lovely building beautifully restored. The relatively small size means you are not overwhelmed by too much space or too big an exhibition; so you can focus and absorb. The current Edward Lear show is an absolute revelation. How many people know that he was a prolific and wonderfully gifted landscape painter? And that he travelled extensively so that 19th century society would not discover something he was trying to hide?

A nice art gallery with great atmosphere and friendly staff. They don't charge entrance, but suggests a £3 donation. Has a nice cafe and public toilets on the ground floor.

The work of modern artist who, in my opinion, is a real artist, but hay may faced alot of bad emotional hardships during his life such as oppression, violence, depression. Most of hiss artworks reflect the pain and mystery behind very simple objects. He demonstrates the dark bad side of simple items in our life like sandwich, ice cream, etc. The museum is free and weird, you will fell like that you are in adventure or horror movie. I don't recommendations the exhibit for kids and toddlers.

Really eye -opening art exhibition about brutalist architecture, we had a great time! There was also a really cool craft fair in the evening (Thursdays) where we met loads of local artists and bought unique Christmas gifts

Small but beautifully designed and not to be missed. The elevator ride alone will keep everyone in the family happy!! Stunning! Also lovely restaurant for before or after!

Fabulous gallery space. Loved the exhibition, especially the lift!

  • 5/5 Stephen T. 5 years ago on Google
Although the art on show at the time did not meet my fancy, it did provide something to talk about, have fun with and discuss. The building is lovely and beautiful, the glass elevator at the side of the staircase is brilliant - definitely travel in it at least up/down one floor and the art book shop was divine, with a great curated space of brilliant stuff.

A great compact gallery, a short stroll away from the International Convention Centre and canal. The exhibition I saw was of works inspired by sailing and colonialism with a room devoted to black necklaces forming designs on the wall, being one stand-out exhibit. The exhibits took over three floors of an old Victorian building that has been converted in a minimalist sympathetic style. The gallery is unpretentious, free of charge to visit and I suggest takes at least an hour to appreciate all the galleries contents.

It's an interesting place and a good way to spend an hour. Can't say I have the brain to fully comprehend everything I saw but there was plenty I enjoyed. Suggested donation of £5 seems a fair one for what you get.

we always come to the icon gallery. Some exhibitions are hit and miss (but that's art for you), but most are outstanding! The building, with its musical lift, and ultra flat staircase, is a work of art in itself. The cafe serves lovely food and drink. Well worth a visit!

  • 5/5 Katrina B. 3 years ago on Google
Small but nice atmosphere and unusual art display makes me come back and pop by whenever I'm around. Always can find something interesting there.

A superb independent contemporary art gallery set in a converted Victorian building close to Brindley Place. We saw the John Walker exhibition inspired by the coastal landscape of Maine in the United States. There's a gift shop and a nice looking cafe too. I always find Ikon to be a welcome and nicely unpretentious space. Exhibitions are well planned and even the kids enjoyed it. One of the picture below is by my daughter, can you guess which one?

We came across this gallery while wandering around Birmingham city centre. It was a lovely find. The staff were very friendly and I loved the exhibition by Meryl McMaster. There were plenty of interesting looking places to eat nearby. We will have to go back when we have more time...

For the thousandth time probably. this is not a patch on the old ikon, in location and vision.lazyness has taken over this place and we tread gently and quietly into a polished building. The well heeled are always right though hey?

Great place to visit and I’d really recommend coming back regularly to see what’s new each time. Great facilities and amazing art, it’s the kind of place that requires you to explore rather than holding you hand. If you’re interested in seeing some new things that might make you think, this is the place for you.

Interesting place. They have different themed art work on display throughout the year. This month's display was not for me I'm afraid. I like fine art so if the museum and art gallery were open I would have gone there. But each to their own. To be fair I did enjoy trying to interpret what I think the art work ment to the artist and what it means to me. So Thumbs-up from me.

Nice to get out for some culture again, both floors of exhibitions were V. good... Esp. Enjoyed the Britta Marakatt-Labba 'Under the Vast Sky' exhibition, really interesting pieces... Loved it... And bought the book about her work in the gift shop as a reminder of day... P. S great gift shop and cafe in building!
