A great museum helping children to understand more about geology & dinosaurs. Although not big in size, there's plenty to learn and explore. Greeted with a big dinosaur on arrival, all staff were pleasant and easy to deal with. No charge for entry

Nice little small museum and its free although you can make donations if you can. Love few low child friendly displays and thr interactive displays nice museums if want some where small to spend a hour in was great for my 3 year old first museum experience. Local access to trains and buses so easy to get to.

There's a really surprising amount given how small the place is. We were probably there for about 1.5 hours, and as we got there at opening it was pretty quiet. Free to enter but really worth a donation! The best way to get there is to get a train to Birmingham (University) then it's a 10 minute walk 😊

Best trip ever! It was a rainy boring day and it turned out Fantastic! It was a hit for the kids and adults alike! It's a great little museum, with Lots to look at and ponder over how our world has evolved from long ago. Parking is free which is a bonus as we parked right outside the museum (on a weekend) and they have a lift inside for easy access for wheelchair users or push chairs etc to the level above on Geoleogy. Worth a visit, I'm sure you'll learn something new! Have fun! Make memories and let the kids fill the quiz sheets as they go along. Look out for the area about the boulders in Birmingham! You might find one near you!! Next stop Barber Instute of Fine Arts!

I'd love to give five stars to this museum, it's a gem:) But I feelt unwelcome. Car access to the campus is through a barrier and it's necessary to press an out of reach, for me, button to have it opened. And once inside there is zero signage. This is a big site it needs signs. Once you discover the elusive Lapworth Museum 'where are the toilets'. Again, almost, no signs. And the coffee shop? Nope. Not there. Nothing at all. I wanted to spend more time here, but thirst eventually dictated. So in summary: A great little museum, well laid out and full of interest. But zero love for the casual visitor.

Great place to take kids for a few hours. Jay at the reception desk was so very nice and helpful! Give the Man a raise! It could use a few more dinosaur displays. And parking is a nightmare but from what I was told you park anywhere on the weekend. Don't hold me to that.

I really loved the way the museum walks us through evolution, the different evidences, the formation of fossils and Femur of the dinosaur and how the different minerals and rock look was very beautiful.

Stopped off here to break up a long journey as it was free entry. Wasn't expecting much but my dino mad Son had a great time. Staff provided activity sheets for kids and the exihibits were interesting enough for me, someone who has no interest in geology. We stayed about 45 minutes. Well worth a visit as a stop off to pass some time. Spent a few quid in small gift shop.

It is a nice museum. Full of good attractions. It is good for a rainy day. Be careful when visiting by car, as far as there's no parking space in there. Moreover, I personally found it difficult to get there. It is in the middle of the university, so it is pretty much challenging to arrive.

Loved the museum, it's small but all the exhibits are great. It's not too crowded so you have plenty of time to see and read through. The exhibits are quite interactive too.

Lovely little free museum to spend an hour or so. Great activity sheets for kids to do as they're going around. I loved the fact they link the Science to the history of the local area. Wren's Nest in Dudley is a great place to take the kids fossil hunting. Overall we had a lovely time.

I had a great time visiting the Lapworth Museum of Geology! It had some really cool exhibits. My favorite was the paleontology exhibits. My friends and I spent a little over an hour there, which was a good amount of time to see everything and read a lot of the signs. It's definitely worth checking out and it's free so you've got nothing to lose

Amazing free resource to learn about Geology, crystals and fossils, with plenty for children and adults too. Particular favourites were the giant ammonites and fluorescent cabinet which glowed in UV light!

The Lapworth Museum of Geology is an absolute gem! From the moment I stepped inside, I was captivated by the fascinating world of rocks, minerals, and ancient fossils. The museum's exhibits are beautifully curated and provide a perfect balance of educational information and sheer awe-inspiring wonders. The collection is truly impressive, showcasing a wide range of geological specimens that span millions of years of Earth's history. Whether you're a geology enthusiast or simply curious about the natural world, there is something for everyone to appreciate and learn from.

Very interesting place to visit inside Birmingham University. It's not a huge space but it has some really good exhibitions. A complete timeline of Earth's eras with lots of information about it. Minerals and fossils that can teach a lot. The museum is for all ages, kids and adults will like and learn something while visting it.

I LOVE fossils and I can't believe I've lived here for 23 years and didn't know that this museum exists! Such an amazing, small geological museum. There are some amazing local fossils and information about how the area has changed and developed over time. I was surprised how busy it was, so do plan ahead as parking is limited. Weekends are best as the university is closed.

Superb, small and somewhat eclectic museum in the University of Birmingham campus. After walking past the gift shop, you enter the main room, which, much like the Victorian cabinet of curiosity under the dinosaur skeleton, has a wide mix of exhibits. It's fun, popular with kids of all ages, and a bit of a delight. We'll worth visiting

What a gem of a place! An absolutely must, especially if you or your child has an interest in geology and all things fossils. They have lots of interactive and hands-on learning activities, including treasure hunts and trails to do. They have drawers for little ones to open, including reading nooks with more than enough books to read or share a story. The staff are extremely nice and knowledgeable. There is a small eating area at the front of the building, within the reception area. There is a small gift shop there too. Toilets are easily located at the back of the museum. They run various family day which are fabulous and engaging. It isn't a big museum and could easily be done in 1 to 2 hours. Parking is located in North Car Park. Make sure you have the correct change or use Ringo App. You have about 10 to 10 mins to the museum. However public transport is easier.

This is a great museum free or donation to get in depends what you like. It's very well set out and very informative. There are some dinosaur fossils, bones and a little bit of taxidermy. There's a big wall of rocks to look at as well. I think you can buy some rocks in the gift shop if you like.

This museum of natural history might be small but it packs in a lot of exhibits and information. The displays are varied in presentation and are at different heights, so even the smallest toddler can get up close and personal with the exhibits without a parent throwing a back out. As well as the three downstairs exhibit areas and one upstairs room, there is a room full of tables and chairs free for anyone to use. They kindly have colouring pencils and prehistoric animal print outs freely available for anyone to colour in. The gift shop is small but has a nice selection of items and sells coffee. Parking is difficult on a weekday as it's part of the university of Birmingham's campus but on the weekend it is possible to drive right up to the front of the museum and park there.

What a place! I have an 8 year old who is absolutely obsessed with all things fossils and minerals and this place is just brilliant. We were looking for a day out trip and stumbled upon this place via a Google search. The website really doesn't do it justice. Entry is FREE which is just incredible considering the amount of things on display. There is a train stop (Birmingham University stop) just a few minutes walk away so it's just perfect for kids. My son wants to be a geologist when he grows up so I imagine we will be frequenting this place more in the future. From dinosaur bones to diamonds, it really is excellent.

It is free. This building has limited signs to find the entrance. You can go up to it not via a stepped route. The entrance is marked with a big flag. Please note that there is no parking or limited. The museum itself is accessible using wheelchairs or taking children in a pram but getting there either if disabled or with young children in a pram is interesting. Get ready to find the long path. Inside the museum has a range of displays also at a range of heights. They have clearly marked information. They also have clipboards and activities for children, suitable for 2-5. They had two large dinosaur bone models and several skulls. As well as a wall of rocks and a good display on precious gemstones. They have some seating as well, if you need a break whilst looking. They have a few interactive displays. They have a specially designed school room. There is no museum cafe but a Starbucks and Costa in walking distance both have no parking. I enjoyed it and think an age of ranges would enjoy this.

Absolute gem of a museum. I'm ashamed to admit I'd never heard of this place before now. Had a visit with a guided tour included and all I can say is WOW!!! A lot of the fossil finds came from less than 5 miles away from where I live which was also a bit of a shock to me. The museum is quite small but you can spend a good few hours looking at the displays. I'll definitely be going a lot more now I know how good it is.

Very nice museum with vast collection of rocks and fossils, some of them you can even touch!! I especially liked the microscope where you can zoom in on fossilized microbe samples. I easily spent 2 hours there. They have also got a corner with all sorts of magazines related to science and history. Shop sells very beautiful specimens of rocks.

  • 4/5 Ibrahim I. 5 years ago on Google
Decent free little museum. The museum in itself is a historic site having been in operation since the 19th century and seeing old photos of what visitors were exposed to was interesting! Good information around different types of rocks, fossils and dinosaurs (to mention a few key areas) woru plenty of samples to see and touch (rocks, and reconstructions of skeletons). Within the grounds of the first single campus university in the country, which is a treat to walk around (We went back with our 4 kids having both graduated from the university over a decade ago)

I love museums like this: pocket sized, so easy to explore without getting information overload, yet crammed with interesting displays and information. We spent about an hour looking around the main room downstairs. As well as information about the history of the collection, the display takes you through the history of life on our planet (if you progress in a clockwise fashion around the room). The big bonus is that entry is free (suggested donation of £5, which we paid).
