When the local council suggested that St Chad's Cathedral should be demolished, Victor Pasmore proposed that a new cathedral should be constructed in its place. He said that this new building would be a masterpiece and it would become a centerpiece of civic life as well as a commanding presence on the townscape. Opened in 1964, St Chad's is still regarded as a triumph of postwar architecture and Victor Pasmore was knighted the following year for saving one of Britain's finest cathedrals from destruction.

A very nice kirche right outside city center. Beautiful architecture. Murals are preservex with many many on walls, pillars and above door arches. Nicest photos at dusk because the sun goes down on the side where the door is. It has recently opened up for limited entrance but never the less opened up after a long time.

Very Beautiful Cathedral. If you are attending the second mass on Sunday, you will hear the amazing sound of the organ from the back of the Cathedral.

We went to see the Saint Bernadette relics tour. St Chad's cathedral was an excellent venue for the display. The cathedral is a beautiful place to worship or to visit.

Was a guest at a christening and a wedding. Breathtakingly beautiful church. With untouched features such as the stained windows and interior. Not many of such still standing.

At long last! Reopened after the #coronahoax lockdown. Albeit for private prayer only. No public services. Nevertheless, much appreciated once again.

I have passed this building on many occasions and must admit that, from the outside, it does not impress me I had the opportunity to go on a guided tour of the cathedral and found it to be a most interesting structure. It was designed by Pugin and he certainly wanted to create an impressive building. I had the opportunity to go to the crypt which is not normally open to the public and even found this to be a most interesting area of the cathedral. The guides were so knowledgeable and willing to answer questions, not only about the cathedral but also aspect of the Catholic faith.

Built in 1841 and is located in the city center. It is known for its Gothic Revival architecture and is considered a fine example of the style. The cathedral is also known for its beautiful stained glass windows and its impressive pipe organ. It is open to visitors and regularly hosts religious services and events. Next time you are in Birmingham, stop by at St Chad.

Very calm and peaceful place inside city.

  • 4/5 Michael H. 5 years ago on Google
Nice quiet prayerful place. A decent compromise between the old style rather baroque designs these places were originally fitted out with, and the more modern minimalist style. The building looks a bit lost currently, in a bit of a post industrial wasteland, with new 21st centenary steel and glass beginning to move in, but perhaps (when all the rebuilding is done) the whole will be more harmonious. You can pray without distraction, and in safety.

Had an Insta meet at St Chad's Cathedral so first time inside. But had walked past and photographed outside before over the years. Was also rooms under ground we were allowed to photograph. Plenty of historic details going back to the 1840s.

I enjoyed this cathedreal a lot more than St Phllips, Birmingham after I failed to go into Bankholiday Monday on which the Google informed it is opened. I was the only person in the place, so peaceful and quiet. Only ground floor though, not the basement or the top(?)

A lovely Catholic cathedral that is well worth a visit, but us something of a hidden gem just outside the shopping area. The stained glass windows are beautiful and there is a very interesting story of a bomb coming through the roof in the war time, which is worth asking about. Look for the panel high in the middle ceiling.
