It's a great place to learn about apartheid history, but there's a need for more resources. Nothing much to see. Free entry for everyone 🌟

Educational. However we went when they were still closed so we didn't have much access to all the rooms... But they still let us in which was great.

I used to give here every day after school over 15 years ago. I must say, it was quite a lovely experience to bring my own kids and see that so much work has been done in developing the rich history this place holds. Overall the place is well maintained and neat. The collections are well preserved and the presentation of information is captivating.

This morning some colleagues and I decided to treat ourselves after a laborious week. We were not ready. This place is packed full of history, well presented and well curated. I'm really impressed that they make the effort to revamp add rejuvenate the museum every now and then. There are so many good features about this museum. We could have easily spent over 4 hours in the museum. Be prepared to read a lot though. Like his book, "A long walk to freedom", there is a lot to describe about the magical life of Madiba. My only suggestion would be to innovate and add other more modern displays to the experience. I have visited far worse than this abroad and am pleased his legacy is not being tarnished.

The place is very well kept . Bathrooms are clean and staff very helpful and friendly. There is also a donation box for those who want to contribute to the well being of the place. This was an emotional journey for us as a South African business. There is so much to take in and alot of Madiba's personal belongings are there. This venue is in Mthata ( Town) and not Qunu which was under maintenance. But still worth the visit. 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦

It was not part of the plan; we were on our way to Durban and for some reason we decided to off-ramp to check out the place as it is not too far from the freeway. The museum was closed for renovations, however, there was some event happening as it was a public holiday, Youth Day to be specific. There's a lot of history to learn along the 'long walk' to the sculpture of Nelson Mandela. It's a great place and I will definitely visit again when the museum is open.

Visiting the place for the first time connected me back to My school years. What a well resourced and clean place. My mom was excited to be there . Having visited over the weekend there were no tour guides we were welcomed by the lady from the front desk however she couldn't take us through the tour as she indicated that she is committed and seemed to be less interested in assisting. .Round of applause to the the two ladies who seemed to be the cleaning staff . They met us at the passages wearing their brought smiles they both wanted to know if we are fine and also pointed to us some of the areas not to miss within the museum. They made our day. Generally the destination is excellent an improvement just needed at the frontline desk .I will definitely visit the place again.

We came by Mtatha on our way from Drakensberg to the Wild Coast and saw there was this museum and we had to stop by. We could have spent hours there, so interesting to learn more about Nelson Mandela and see pictures, videos and documents etc. If you are in the area I would recommend to make a stop.

The respect for this particular museum should come naturally. Eastern Cape, Mthatha in particular should respect this Museum. What the museum has for Tamkhulu Mandela, the world is dreaming of. With my son, we trying to make yearly visits to this place rich of what we should not take light, the struggles of the people. The museum, a place of value in a living nation. A Living Nation. Never visited anything so appalling in my life. A vast, modern structure where there are a few photos of Nelson Mandela's life around the walls of two otherwise empty rooms. There really is nothing here. Everything is in decay despite it being only 16 years since it was opened. Only one set of female toilets working and they had water running all over the floor. The front gate has wooden slats which are all falling off. There is a huge industrial kitchen in which it looks as though not even an egg has been boiled to serve a closed up conference centre and restaurant. Six staff sit by the gate on plastic chairs or on the ground utterly disinterested though one, wearing an MTN tracksuit did approach us and said he was a guide. No name, no uniform, no knowledge. The access road is so covered in litter and uncleared vegetation that one wonders if it is actually open. Don't be fooled by the photos, this place is a disgrace and must be closed immediately because it is utterly unworthy to be called a museum and makes one want to weep at what Nelson Mandela would think today. 32kms further up the N2 is a correct and very interesting museum in the old Parliament building in Mthatha. Go there. Visited Jan 2017.

  • 3/5 John-William D. 7 years ago on Google
Busy upgrading the museum for 2017, not that much items on display, but if you consider that it is free to enter and in the middle of Qunu it really doesn't matter. This is where Tata Madiba grew up, went to school and played as a kid. It is such an honour to walk where he walked. The sliding rock is an amazing place and the views from the museum over Qunu is incredible. Friendly volunteers that take you on a guided tour. Appreciate it for what it is, where it is and not for the content!

Nelson Mandela is one of my heroes. To see a museum that is supposed to be dedicated to such a great man in such a sad state, was dissapointing. At least the entry was free.
