An outstanding masterpiece of a museum! Realistic and fascinating!! A true account of what Christians did to innocent people who did not share in their faith. Fascinating exploration of how destructive Christians have been throughout the ages! The museum staff is awesome, too! Perfect date night idea!

So many awesome exhibits! Great eerie soundtrack. Each exhibit has a description that sets the place and reasons why someone may find themselves in the predicament.

Super cool exhibits. I liked the placard and wall hanging information even better than the props. Learned a few new things. Very friendly polite informative counter staff. A must for horror fans, history buffs and fans of the macabre! Small place but packed w exhibits.

Definitely a cool spot to hit! It was hard to reconcile walking around what amounted to be a theater props exhibition with the price. It costs more than the Art Institute! Needed much more history included and actual artifacts. The hands on experience was super fun.

The Chicago Torture Museum offers a spine-tingling foray into medieval history with its vast array of torturous devices. The app-based ghost hunt adds a spectral edge to the already macabre atmosphere. A return visit is a must to fully absorb the rich, dark stories. For optimal experience, headphones are essential for the evocative audio guide, and a portable charger is a practical necessity. While the entry fee is steep, the museum delivers an emotionally resonant experience that haunts you long after leaving. It's an unparalleled educational encounter with the grisly side of human history.

A very well presented & detailed vision of torture and execution devices/practices. Excellent atmosphere without resorting to scares like a haunted house (which it isn't). Family friendly if you're an odd family, but not for younger kids. Ours was 13 and was interested/fine. Takes a decent time to view everything, but rather quick if you don't slow down.

I visited here over a couple hours on a Sunday. Loved it! Really appreciated the interactive aspect! The museum is laid out in a way where it meanders through a series of rooms, so it is easy to find your way through and be sure you have seen everything. Some amusing stuff in the gift shop by the entry. Nice ambience with dramatic lighting and background sound/music.

Our app for the guided tour kept crashing and the person working had no advice as to how to fix it. The QR codes didn't line up with the displays but we eventually found them. There is little to no street parking available and we paid $40 in parking to do this museum, not their fault, but I wanted to make everyone aware so you can plan accordingly. The museum itself is pretty cool and we learned a lot. I don't know how accurate all the descriptions were, but we took it all at face value and loved that it was interactive and you could touch, move and use a lot of.the devices. Definitely a cool place to visit!

This was so fun and interesting! We learned a lot and thought it was cool how interactive it is. We preferred to read, but it was awesome that you could listen to audio if you wanted to. We spent about 40 mins here. No wait time, but you can save money if you buy your tickets online beforehand.

Most of the exhibits are hard to stomach, hard to believe, and ever harder to imagine the reality of yesterday's long gone. As hard as they were, I read each introduction card and felt overwhelmingly grateful for the times in which I was born. As hard as it may be, I recommend you go. However, as a mother, I wouldn't recommend children under the age of 13.

This is by far one of the best museums I’ve been to on the east coast, ranks up with the Mutter museum in PA but there’s no other museum like this one. It’s fascinating and they keep you interested with a ghost hunting feature and an audio tour. I found myself preferring to take photos and read, as opposed to the teens I was with that did use the ghost hunting tool. It’s a very large space which surprised me since I assumed it would be small. The minimally lit area matches the vibe of what you’re looking at, and the interactions with some of the devices was very fitting! I also love going to gift shops in any museum and found myself buying several things because it’s stuff you can’t really find anywhere else (voodoo necklace, skull lamp, etc.) I highly recommend to go when In town and I know in due time this place will definitely be a can’t miss stop for tourists.

This was a great place to learn about the truly awful ways humans have figured out how to hurt each other. I would recommend walking around twice to take everything in. There is an app you can use to look for ghosts and read a story about it. You should also listen to the explanation that corresponds with each exhibit. A definite must see!

This was an impulse stop as we were wandering through Chicago. Some of the things are pretty disturbing, so make sure you are in a good headspace when you go! There is an audio guide that goes along with all of the displays. The background stories were really interesting from the audio guide and filled in the information that was not on the display.

Great experience! Very well put together attraction, plenty to see and do. Really makes you realize how barbaric we have been in the past. The audio tour that came with out tickets was a great addition, with little stories about certain exhibits. The staff are very friendly and are happy to answer questions if you have any. If your in the area check it out it’s worth it

We went on a weekend trip to Chicago and decided to check out the museum. It is not for the faint of heart and not really recommended for anyone under 18 (it said on a sign) but definitely provides a gruesome look into history. This is the first time hearing about a place like this and would definitely recommend checking out for anyone wanting to know more about past Era's. Very nice and personable people who run the place and everything is real life like. Definitely Go if you are considering.

Unfortunately when I got there I didn't have alot of time. But I did get to see everything! Let me tell you, what a crazy and intense experience. Those methods of torture are crazy! I wish I had more time to be here and REALLY get to do more of the interactive torturing! But I took lots of pictures to go back through them. Hopefully I can make it back sometime. It's morbid but interesting history for sure!

Way scarier than expected. Creepy sounds playing. Cool thing is that u can sit on many of the displays and take pictures on the electric chair etc. The ghost hunting game is boss, it plays creepy sounds and shows what u are actually a seeing in the room but shows ghosts there too. Lamar was an awesome host, super nice guy and great at explaining everything.

This place was awesome!! The woman upfront was so helpful and explained everything extremely well. She even gave us ways to save a ton on parking and we got to draw our own discount on our souvenirs , which honestly made me want to buy more things because I knew I was going to save a little money. I wish I could remember her name because she deserves all the praise. We were there Saturday, March 18, right at opening. They have an app so you can gain more information and each placard for each exhibit was short and sweet. If you are into the macabre things this is a must do.

One of the most interesting and coolest museums I've been too. You can even touch some of the devices. Very informative information with great detailed visuals. Highly recommend stopping in. The gift shop even has great stuff!

Super intense here. Some very graphic images. It had interactive parts too. We learned and saw a lot. Definitely not for a young audience. But we enjoyed this museum. Got some cool swag after too.

The museum was a really good experience. You get to interact with the pieces and it's pretty fun. There's an audio guide that you can listen to on your phone for each exhibit. We spent about 90 minutes there. My only warning of course is that this is not for you if you are repulsed by depictions of gore.

Stopped by with some friends while I was in town and this was a great choice! The museum is interactive, as well as having an app that you can "ghost hunt" with, or listen to audio recordings about each item. There was a large number of items which kept us in there awhile so I'd say the price is worth it 100 times over.

It was def worth it! The place could have a bit more of a vibe if they played some dark metal music or something. It was too quiet for me…. But it is a Museum. The price was right and parking was not bad! They also were mad we bought tix on Groupon. They have to wait for the money I guess…. Not my problem.

This is a fun place to say you visited and share photos - but MANY of the items are reproductions. I am much more interested in viewing original period pieces. In the spirit of things, I am still giving a four star review as it is fun to walk through and read the displays. Probably more of a date type thing or a group of friends thing than a museum buff thing. I read every card and it took me about 75 minutes to walk through. If you walk through without reading, I'm guessing half that. If I could give the owners any advice, it would be to clearly mark authentic items and try to date them. My eyes aren't what they used to be and it's a little dark for reading as well. They have audio options but I wanted to read.

Cool museum to check out if you're visiting the city and are into that sort of thing. Lots of new and interesting means of torture were brought to my attention. Interactive guides are available as well which is very useful.

Very fun Halloween experience! Highly recommend! For Halloween they decorate it and theme it very well. Also they have witches walking around, adding a very creepy vibe. No jump scares. The museum is not large, you can spend between 30min to an hour and a half going through the exhibits, but it's a great experience nonetheless. It's interactive, meaning some exhibits you can touch and fool around. I got to use a guillotine!

Place was very interesting. Pretty dark inside, but I could read everything. They also had an option to scan a QR code and listen to brief stories about each exhibit on your phone, so I highly recommend that you BRING HEADPHONES. You can touch some of the exhibits, but some people vandalized some of them (not to an extent that it takes away from the experience though). Employees we had checked in with were nice and explained everything well. We were in there about 1 1/2 hours. You could be faster or slower though.

I genuinely enjoyed this museum. It’s a year round attraction, took about an hour to walk through. Has an audio tour and lots of interactive displays.

My first thought was it was pretty expensive but once we got inside and saw that every square inch was filled, it made sense. A lot of work went into this place. The audio tour though a web app was nice. We didn't use it there but have the ability to listen to it later.

Decided to check this place out while stopping in Chicago and were not disappointed. The displays provided great informational examples of historic torture methods... and the audio hauntingly brought them to life. Definitely recommend for anyone interested in medieval history!

What a big difference in ratings between Google and Yelp. It’s like more people love it on Google vs people that are like butt hurt about it on Yelp. $30 for one adult is not overpriced, a lot cheaper than Wndr. Plus it’s in Chicago so in general tourist attractions are going to cost more. If you just walk around without reading anything or just a quick glance, then yeah I can see why it would take some people 10-15 mins. For me personally, it took me an hour because I read everything, listened to the audios, and played with the interactive displays. Employees were very nice, didn’t encounter anyone that was rude. Lastly, there were more than just a few rooms. That’s how I can tell that some people didn’t actually pay to go upstairs.

Came from out of state where we don’t have museums like these. Very cool to see!! Length of the tour was perfect, the staff was very nice, very informative and it was fun being able to interact with the displays. Highly recommend !!

Very interesting and graphic. Not for the sensitive soul. For best experience, listen to audio stories and take out enough time to get the most out of the experience.

The museum had really cool exhibits with a ghost hunting experience included in app. It was fun to go through the museum first and then walk around hunting for ghosts. There was also an audio guide with in depth history and explanation for each exhibit.

Such a cool and interesting place to visit. While exploring the city we has some down time and we're about a 5 min walk from this place. Decided to check it out and we do not regret it. I wish I would've have had a little more time to truly walk around and listen to the guided audio tour. Next time for sure.

Very well done. They've set up the environment just right to showcase this horrors with care to The historical context. The fact that my coworker wanted to go here..... Makes me concerned for future projects 😂

  • 5/5 Gaby U. 1 year ago on Google
Actually insane but educational! Who would’ve thought those two words could be used to describe a museum. Definitely a must see if you’re into spooky or medieval history. Will definitely have to come back and visit again! Interactions with each exhibit were 10/10!

  • 5/5 Marvin H. 9 months ago on Google
This was a wild experience. Plenty of different ways to explore the grim history of a torture museum. There is also a nice gift shop with the basic souvenirs available. Not recommended for children. Teenagers or older for the content here.

  • 5/5 cactupi 1 year ago on Google
Really cool place! It was honestly really impressively decorated and with the music and ambiance sounds and dark lit rooms it's such a good environment! It was surprising much more informative than I imaged. Yes there was a horror factor but there was a great free audio you could listen to that went in depth with stories, who created it, and how it was used. What I really enjoyed was how interactive it was ! They encouraged you to interact, touch and play with the devices. They had things like dunking a witch in water, swining a pendulum, and even sitting in (fake) electric chairs and wearing chastity belts. It added for a really fun experience. They also encouraged pictures so I got to pose in all the cool tourture devices. Only downside I can say is that it costs a pretty penny. Even with a student discount it was almost 30$ for one person. You are also able to walk thro the whole thing decently quick. Me and my girlfriend actually walked thro the whole thing two times in little over an hour. I'd recommend it to get see but just keep in mind the price :)

This place is an amazing hidden gem... If you're into this kind of stuff. I loved it. Nothing brutal or scary, but it does have a ton of torture device displays and explanations of how and why they were used throughout history. Has a cool vibe inside to go a long with it. Great visuals and very information.

Very interesting collection. You can interact with many things in the place which makes it very fun. I used the audio tour which is very good and easy to use. I’d have liked to see a little bit more of the periods of use and invention of each utensils. I believe the collection is great, but could be too graphic for some.
