I would definitely recommend a visit to the Chirk aqueduct if you are in the area. It is well sign posted through the village of Chirk, with car parking close by. There are serval cafes and takeaways in Chirk, so very easy to make a day of your visit. The aqueduct itself is very photogenic, so definitely have your camera ready. There is plenty to see along the canal and the foot paths are well kept. Plenty of wildlife in this area, and plenty of barges to watch as they go by. You may also encounter the "darkie tunnel" along your walk on the canal - so a touch is highly recommended!

A lovely little walk and view at the end. A car would take you most of the way following the canal to the aqueduct, but I think it's mostly for locals to go down. There's a small parking lot that you should park at instead and just take the pleasant 5-10 minute stroll. 20 minutes is really all you need for the walk and to take in the sights.

A canal tunnel, aqueduct and railway viaduct surrounded by wildflowers above a picturesque valley. Excellent Interpretation Signs that explain the engineering and historical importance of the site

Fantastic walk along the canal, over a high aqueduct that allows you to see for miles (there is a much higher one if you are brave enough!) the views are spectacular and the canal wall is a great way to end a summers evening. There is also a long tunnel which is fun, as you cannot see anything towards the centre. I would highly recommend a visit.

Great place to stretch you legs. Fun tunnel alongside the canal to wander through, though it's very dark! The views are breathtaking, and there's lots of information about local history about the place.

Travel between England and Wales with style, canal was finished in 1801, railway a few decades later. A great achievement for people with no power apart from horses and each other.

A 70 foot high navigable Aqueduct that runs next to the railway viaduct a crosses the England and Wales border. Quieter than the neighbouring Pontcysyllte and good fun to walk across it and then through the canal tunnel. Car parking and cafe close by.

Crossed the aqueduct on a canal boat holiday. Stunning views and a feast for the eyes. Lovely canal path to walk along and plenty of places to take some stunning pictures.

Lovely place. Gorgeous views and walking through the longest, darkest canal tunnel is a must. Just wish I had more time to stay longer as the canal walk was lovely too.

Great example of past architecture. Walk alongside the canal, over the viaduct , height of 4 double decker buses. Have a foot in England and one in Wales at the same time. Rest your weary legs at one of the lovely lakeside pubs along the way, sit in the beer garden and watch the wildlife, the paddleboarders, canoeists and narrow boaters going about their day whilst relaxing with a cold shandy. Play areas for the little ones aswell as comfy rest spots for your four legged friends.

I walked from Pontcysyllte along the towpath and back. A lovely walk with great scenery. This Aquaduct may not be quite so dramatic as Ponts but it’s still an amazing sight with the viaduct running alongside it. There’s a nice little pub about half a mile past it with a great view from the beer garden. Also a barge that sells hot drinks just on the Welsh side of the Aquaduct too.

It is beautiful, tall and a bit scary too :) The children loved it and would definitely return! Chirk tunnel is very long, and pitch black at some points, so not recommended for anyone with claustrophobia!

Beautiful location, could sit for ages watching the boats go up and down. A walk through the tunnel is interesting and lovely walk along the canal

Amazing engineering of a beautiful aquaduct. The tunnel between England and Wales took me out of my comfort zone. Dark, damp and narrow but so pleased I did it.

Stunning architecture and a beautiful setting, if a little awkward to find by car. The walk across is amazing, but not for those afraid of heights...!

A fantastic feat of engineering taking the canal across the border between England and Wales and over a river in a deep valley at the same time. For the shortest, but steep, walk to see the aqueduct, park at the information centre/Police station (free) on the B4500 where there is also a coffee shop (Caffi Wylfa.) The geography of the location means you can look down on full grown trees and birds in flight - doesn't sound particularly special, but to be outside, rather than in a tall building, and see this view on the world always captivates me. The views of the surrounding countryside are lovely and it is incongruous that the canal should run across the aqueduct high above the valley floor to disappear into a tunnel. Worth a brief stop off when travelling along the A5 near Chirk or as part of a longer walk by the Llangollen Canal.

Engineering on a phenomenal scale, especially when you take into account the technology available at that time.

Dwarfed by it's bigger brother but I actually prefer it for a pleasant short walk along the canal and over the viaduct. The towpath is well cared for and usually mud and puddle free.

A great place to have a walk down the canal in rain or shine!

A great place to see. Walking over it is thrilling and canoeing or boating even more so. It's free too.

Brilliant viaduct and right next to a viaduct so you get double the entertainment. And once you’ve walked across the aqueduct and back you can follow the canal through Chirk tunnel for 421 metres! There are probably always canal boats going through. Walk alongside one, it’ll help light your way. I got ahead of the one we started following and it got pretty dark. There is a hand rail to stop you from falling in the water. I’m guessing if you think in advance, a torch would be a good idea or the one on your phone.

A pleasant couple of hours spent walking along the Chirk Aquaduct. Plenty of boats to watch manouvering to get through the tunnel. Beautiful views Parking is available at the cafe above the canal. The cafe does light snacks, drinks and ice cream.

A really good aqueduct. Water, bridge, arches, water on the bridge. Ticks all the boxes. And the Brucie bonus, it's right next to another bridge, without water, yet still with arches. So not a aqueduct, a viaduct no less. With a railway line. Whatever, it's in a beautiful location and worth a look if you're nearby, or just have an interest in aqueducts. Especially ones next to a viaduct.

Dramatic piece of classic canal engineering, enhanced by the addition of the later railway viaduct, all set in beautiful English and Welsh border countryside.

Great piece of engineering good views from the canal towpath well worth the walk would recommend a visit

Beautiful views when travelling over the aqueduct on the narrowboat and impressive to see the viaduct above. No waiting the morning we went to cross but enough room for several boats to pull in and wait if needed. Lovely smooth paths for walkers and cyclists over the aqueduct and easy to walk up onto the bridge into the tunnel for fantastic photos of the boats coming along and waiting to enter the tunnel.

Beautiful walk along the aqueduct, to the last pub in England. Recommend the walk through the tunnel, before the bridge, but take a torch!

Beautiful place to walk and admire the view. The display of flowers at the viewpoint by the road is magnificent

There is a small car park just over the bridge on Weston Rhyn. Then you can walk along the tow path by the side of the canal to Chirk Aqueduct. It is a beautiful walk. There are ducks and geese though the geese can be a little unfriendly. Then once you get to the Aqueduct the views are stunning. There is also CafΓ© Wylfa near by for a good cuppa to warm you up, with cakes and sandwiches etc. A lovely place to visit and well worth a stop.

Smaller than Pontcysyllte Aquaduct but actually prettier as it runs alongside a taller railway viaduct of similar construction. Also less fear inducing for those with vertigo.

It was a really pleasant walk along the canal and then the heavens opened. Luckily the tunnel was quite near so we dived in to shelter from the torrential rain.

Visited Chirk aqueduct last week, its amazing really your so high up with the canal right by your side an the train line just by the side of that, you can walk across from England to Wales ,would not recommend going when it's windy ,it was built by the amazing engineer Thomas Telford.

Fabulous place to visit, walked through the fields along the river and under the aqueduct; then parked at the Inn in Chirk and had a lovely lunch before walking over the aqueduct from Wales to England. Wonderful day

While not as impressive as others in the area its nice to visit and continue into the tunnel. Which is quite a unique experience.

Great place to visit, lovely walks. Sits right next to it's taller relative: the Viaduct.

  • 5/5 Paul B. 11 months ago on Google
We came here in the evening when the sun was going down and there was hardly anyone else around. It was so beautiful. There's a small car park at the police station about five minutes walk away which is free.

Children did enjoy the long and dark tun el at the end of the aqueduct. Also there is a nic castle nearby so You can combine both of these together.
