The Italian Renaissance inspired Alcazar de Colón [Castle of Columbus] is also called Palacio Virreinal de Diego Colón [Viceroy Palace of James Columbus]. This building was the first viceroy palace in the Americas, along with the home of Colón y Toledo. According to the sign on the outside of the palace, the family built the house by 1511 and lived in the house until 1577. Last restored in 1955, the building is now a historical museum with sporadic opening times. The museum was closed for maintenance during my visit.

Beautiful Old historical residential museum in the heart of Zona Colonial which was built by Diego Columbus. The ticket to enter was about $2/person. It comes with an audio device where you can learn about the history of the museum and each room. On the second floor, you can see a beautiful view of the river and the Colonial area. We spent about 30-45 minutes here and it's definitely worth visiting if you are in the colonial area. It was not crowded and the staffs were pleasant.

Museum is reasonably interesting but quite small with little description on the artifacts. Audioguides are given out at the entrance however I had a tour goide and don't believe I got as much out of it as I might have, since explanation was about little other than it being Christopher Columbus' house which was destroyed by Frances Drake. It's unfortunate the remainder of the building to give a truer idea of how the place functioned.

It was interesting going back in time like that, visiting their home and walking through it's walls. The fee was very low for visiting the museum, only 2$ and the included audio tour was very good and helpful.

The house of Christopher Columbus's son, Diego, and his wife is filled with history and some original (but most not) artifacts like clothing, armor, furniture and instruments. The tickets are about $2 each and include audio tours in most languages. Local guides can be hired at the entrance also.

We had a guided tour. It was facinating to learn about the history of these Spanish upper.class that came to live in Santo Domingo. Much of the furniture and decorations are original, even if the actual structure is not. Most notable was that Christopher Columbus son and his wife were the ones to occupy the palace. Really, quite exceptional to see

(Translated by Google) It is a historical monument of great importance for better or for worse, not only for the Dominican Republic, but also for all of America. The construction as such has a certain beauty and it is worth going to visit that colonial palace and incidentally enjoying the surroundings of the area, which are perfect for spending a pleasant time, alone or accompanied. (Original) Es un monumento histórico de mucha importancia para bien o para mal, no solo para República Dominicana, sino también para toda America. Alcazar de Colon is the oldest royal residential edifice in all Americas. It was built under the Diego Columbus (Christofer's son) orders as his residence he shared with his wife Maria de Toledo in the early 16 c. It's a two-story bldg - one side oriented at Ozama river with great views of the river and Columbus lighthouse and the other side towards the big Plaza de Espana sq. Entry fee is cheap - few bucks, and you need less than an hour for a visit. Imo, the authenticity of the furniture is questionable, as the palace was looted many times, heavily by pirate Drake, but it is still a great place to visit in Zona Colonial.

The Alcázar de Colón was built between 1511 and 1514, following the influences of the one in Mancera de Abajo , in Salamanca (Spain), of which ruins are still preserved. The name of the architect who carried out the construction of this fortified palace is unknown . Style gothic mudejar mostly, Alcazar also has some features Renaissance , remarkable in its arcades, as well as the Elizabethan style observable in the tassels that adorn it. The building was constructed using masonry made of coral rocks. Originally the residence had 55 rooms, of which only 22 remain. It was the first fortified palace built in Hispanic times. Great Spanish conquerors such as Hernán Cortés and Pedro de Alvarado passed through it. It is the only known residence of a member of the Colón family, in addition to Cristóbal's birthplace, which is still in Genoa. Juana, Isabel, Luis and Cristóbal Colón de Toledo were born in the palace , children of Don Diego Colón and his wife Maria Alvarez de Toledo. Diego Colón died in Spain in 1526 but María Álvarez de Toledo, his widow , remained there until her death in 1549. Three generations of the Colón de Toledo family inhabited it, possibly until the year 1577.

Wir waren gestern dort und haben viel darüber erfahren, daß dies die erste gegen Piraten befestigte Siedlung in der " neuen Welt " war. Auch das hier die erste Kathedrale und der erste Erzbischof der neuen Welt waren. Toll! 🤩Aber man könnte alles etwas besser in Schuss halten😉

The alcazar it’s an UNESCO world heritage site, it was formerly the house of Colombia son. The building was restored in the 90’s, and even if the furniture it’s not original to the place, it is however original to the time period and geographic location. Visiting the place is a great way to know the local history and cultural legacy.

It's a shame, not because of the beautiful beaches in the region, but because many people miss the capital Santo Domingo, the first colonial city in the Americas. This one has a rich history and that everyone should know. As the home of Spain's first governor (viceroy), it has become this beautiful museum. Had a fantastic tour with a guide who studied Art History and I can tell that he made all the difference. The well restored site was guided by someone who gave more than a generic tour but instead gave one that respected the site and its history and significance. He gave trivia and facts and answered all the questions we could have. I forgot to ask for his name but thank you for a great tour!

This is well worth visiting. The audio guide is quite brief but gives useful information. It’s provides a good insight into how grand and commanding this building was when constructed. Good views over the river and fortifications. Don’t miss spotting the building that used to be the stables in the plaza. It is also a cool shelter from the heat of the day.
