The new façade is somewhat attempt to protect the structure but it did take some authenticity. Ojo con eso! Still an important piece of history.

It is one of the oldest and most important places in the history of the Colonial Zone and what it represented in the National Independence.

An emblematic part of our history. Right where, according to the legend, the independence was made official. A great spot if you're in a historical adventure!

The Gate of Mercy was the first gate in the wall of the city of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic; Located in the colonial zone, it was originally called the Puerta de Santiago or Puerta Grande. It was built by the architect Rodrigo de Liendo in 1543. It was the place where Ramón Matías Mella fired the legendary blunderbuss of independence while Francisco del Rosario Sánchez raised the Dominican flag, thus declaring the independence of the Dominican Republic after having taken the fortress of Ozama. The name of the door is due to the placement of the Blessed Sacrament in the place to ask for an end to all the earthquakes that were destroying the island at that time.

It's a nice area to visit if you like historical markers and it's also very near the Malecon entrance so you got many good restaurants around.

In the front of "la puerta de la Misericordia" there is a colmado with the coldest beers in SantoDomingo. My mom lived acrythe street her whole life.
