Popular hotel in Upper Ferntree Gully situated a stone throw from the Ferntree Gully National Park and the climb to Belgrave. Typical pub menu with reasonable prices and decent amount of food on each plate. Have enjoyed steaks, veals and pasta here. On the last visit we enjoyed a King Avo Parmigiana and the Seafood Basket was above average for a pub meal. Always a table available if you don't have a reservation. You will find the staff quite friendly and there's a large car park so finding a spot is not a problem. Worth a meal.

Visited this Hotel for Dinner and was extremely happy with the service and the quality and quantity of food served to us. Served Dinners very quick considering the amount of people in the Restaurant and our party of 10 people. Would recommend for an easy mid week Dinner.

Spur of the moment lunch with wife and 2 kids. Very friendly service and staff. Easy and clear menu to follow. Online ordering and payment were okay. However, there were slight variations between the menu we were handed and the online menu. Although the dishes looked the same in the photos, when you're ordering for kids, it can be the difference between a tantrum and a pleasant family meal. Prices were fair.

My wife and I and friends used to eat here regularly over many years. However the management of this hotel have stopped serving seniors meals since about August despite the seniors in this area carrying the hotel with their loyal patronage. Shame on you Royal.

Both our meals were served promptly, they were tasty and fresh. Good old fashioned delicious pub meals. Prices very reasonable and ample sized serves. Great service by the waitresses. A real credit to all the staff and management. For a pub meal you could not do better. Thanks everyone.

Great food. Loved the Creamy Garlic and Chorizo starter. Would recommend this. The BBQ Pork ribs just fell off the bone with veggies, would say at least give this a go. Staff was friendly and the service of food was prompt. Clean and tidy. Good pricing on food as well.

Place was busy so expected some delay. Waited an hour for a kids meal-checked in and then it was delivered (looking like it was scraped off someone else’s plate…) Two steaks followed-one seniors, one mains. The main was supposed to be med/well but was still bleeding so sent it back. The seniors was so tough and full of fat it couldn’t be cut with a steak knife. Waited another half hour but the med/well still hadn’t come out so asked for refund (as we’d now been waiting over an hour and a half and all other meals were finished). This was met with pleas to wait by wait staff who had been terrific in trying to help. Couldn’t wait any longer so said we’d prefer a refund. Also showed the fat, rubbery steak that was the seniors and how it couldn’t be cut. Disappointed staff dropped their heads and gave us our money back for the steaks-the only positive experience. Not faulting the waitresses, but won’t be going back again. Expensive, no good, huge wait.

Parma, fish and chips and salad all great as well as great service and reasonable prices. But can be hit and miss with the meals as obviously frozen prawns and what seemed like cheese slices cut up instead of parmesan cheese which was disappointing.

Very disappointing experience recently. Family Xmas get together. Food was average. Kitchen very disorganised, it took an hour from when we got our first meal on the table to finally the last meal (after 2 queries). Not sure there was any system at all. Staff were friendly but let down by the average food and illogical speed of meal service. We have been previous years and it has been good. Somewhere else next year for family Xmas get together.

Good friendly staff, nice warm atmosphere. We had the Christmas special Soup delicious we had some garlic bread which was nice a soft, perfect. Roast meats and veggies cooked perfectly right amount of gravy and apple sauce. Plumb pudding was small but tasty with the custard and all that we needed to finish the meal. Very full off to the 1000 steps to work off the great meal!

No Senior meals weekends. Silly. Better to have a full Bistro @ $20 a head keeping the bar staff busy, than a hand full eating $25 meals So went to the Club Hotel - great Seniors value @ $20 a head, plus free garlic bread. Wine $6.50, schooners $9 - will be back with our friends.

My hokkien noodle dish was fabulous as was my wine and the service. Husband and 15 year old son who both had the ribs said not enough sauce. The atmosphere is always really nice, relaxing and social with a mix of down to earth people. Also nice and clean.

Went here for dinner with family. I ordered the plantation burger, which was amazing - the patty tasted great and the chipotle mayo gave it a nice kick. Service was quick and very friendly. The parmas were massive as well. Chips were also very good.

The service was great however our dinner was not. Our entrees came out at the same time our mains did even though we asked for the first. My Caesar Salad came out incorrectly made annd the chicken was dry and had to be retuned. The remade salad was very greasy - even the lettuce felt oily.

Just had lunch with my husband , we ordered the seafood basket and chicken Parmigiana. Sadly the seafood was terrible and not even close to a fishermans basket my husband couldn't eat it chips were cold and seafood looked straight out of a Coles or aldi box. My Parma with veggies was decent but now my husband is still starving. We were able to get a refund fir his meal but let's just say we will not be returning there for a meal again 😒

Worst "chicken" Parma I have ever had. Not sure how you could make this so poorly. Burnt on the outside and processed (not sure it was) chicken on the inside. Tasted terrible. Only positive I could find is no chickens were harmed in the making of my Parma

Disappointed did not have seniors menu at night only the roast. My husband could not eat all his meal but no take away containers. Also heard a younger lady ask for a container. The roast was Luke warm. The staff where good. Shame no seniors menu as must be so much waste.

Me and hubby went for pre-theatre dinner recently. My first time eating there and hubby regularly ate there 10-15yrs ago when living near the area. Our honest opinion: Service: Waiting staff were great. Meals came out pretty quick - too quick as I hadn't finished my starter.

Had a 40th Birthday here and it was a great experience. We had two huge tables of people in the bistro and the meals came out pretty quickly after ordering. The calamari salad, roast beef and parmas were very good. Staff were friendly and polite. All the kids meals came out quickly and were enjoyed too.

On our previous visit to this hotel we had lo ely seniours meals. Went again last night, no offerrings for seniors on the menu just 2 things to choose from on the specials board so we had surf & turf, steak was disgusting & chips overcooked. Cancelled booking for 12 we had made based on our good experience so glad we went last night if only to realize to no longer go there. New manager perhaps who thinks he is being clever with the menu, not so clever if you are loosing a ton of customers. Lift your game! Staff were all very pleasant though.

Renovations are long overdue!!!! Sadly this hotel needs a complete revamp, taps in the toilets don't work, the smoking areas are filthy, lack of seating and tables. The gaming area is atracting very strange types of patrons, rules by management regarding the invisible line between gaming area and bar leave patrons waiting for service when there may be two staff standing in gaming area who are not busy but cannot serve the patron. Stools in gaming area are uncomfortable, most have torn seats and some are far to unstable to sit on. Packaged snacks are pathetic and tasteless. After twenty years as a patron I have had enough, I will not be back.

Good food, friendly staff. We had two kids meals and a BBQ Meatlovers Parma they were great. Note, the kids spaghetti does not come with chips, but if you demand it you will get them, until they reword the menu. No kids play area. Multiple TVs around to watch. Pokes and sports bar also on site away from the bistro. Wheelchair access throughout.

Went here for dinner, as we have many times before, but tonight it was terrible. My wife and I each ordered the eye fillet surf and turf special medium rare and after waiting 35mins (well after our kids had eaten) it came out medium well/well done. $42 special, so we sent it back and the waitress was apologetic and they remade it. 15 mins later they came out with one eye fillet cooked correctly but my wife's plate had a scotch fillet cooked medium-well done. The wait staff checked in on us and saw our disappointment and were again apologetic and offered us another drink, dessert and our money back. We cannot fault the waiting staff, they were great, but unfortunately the kitchen has let them down badly tonight.

Great for a pub meal. We shared a few starters and the staff were super friendly and helpful. Lots of big groups and families looking happy - a big space so we didn't feel crowded. Great food at great prices.

Been here before awhile back and was a wonderful experience. How ever today the food was very average. Seniors steak for Mum saw tuff as nails chewy and half not eaten. The Turkey roast and vegetable (Roast?)potato looked like it had been steamed and Turkey tasted like mock ham, couldn’t quite get my brain to work out the taste looking at Turkey eating ham. Broccoli was still raw. On the up side the hot wings and cheesy garlic bread were wonderful. Maybe because it’s father’s day the standard dropped off. Would still come back give it another try as it’s a nice place. “Hint” don’t ask if you want ice in Chardonnay it’s not a thing.

I came to this Royal Hotel a few times and used to like it so much; great ambiance and good price food. Today I had such bad experience there. I ordered Christmas in July lunch (quite standard menu today) the main took a very long time to come. All my friends who orders regular meals finished the food and I was still waiting. I tried to ask and the waitress in red was not interested to check for me. Secondly, I ordered an vegetarian pasta dish to my in-law; the menu didn’t say there is opinion and garlic there and we just ordered assuming it’s no onion and garlic. It turned out there is onion in the sauce and I brought to the counter and again talked to the waitress in red. I asked whether we can take away as obviously my in law can’t eat due to allergy to onion/garlic. She said they don’t offer take away. Then I asked whether we can get refund or change another dish. What she said is NO, No, and No!!!!! Eventually we totally wasted a dish that no one even tougher it. How would they (or at least this waitress in red) in so not helpful and flexible. Firstly the menu didn’t say there is onion and garlic, then my first n law really couldn’t eat the dish and why they couldn’t let us change, refund or simply pack up to take away? Why she is so mean and rather waste the food than being a little bit helpful. Surely it’s hard for us to dine there again although it might be just that waitress in red. What a pity!!!

Parking is easy! Ordered dinner from the QR code at the table whilst everyone else lined up to order. We had the seniors meals which were delightful and, Bree at the bar was lovely and eager to help drinkers with their choices🥰

The Royal is a good place for local gatherings with families or friends to eat together, play pool or just have a drink. I like paying when ordering rather than having to split a large bill. Plenty of parking at the back.

I had a very poor experience overall We were seated fine on a Thursday night not overly busy Ordered on our phones the entrees came to the table promptly Drinks took 20 minutes before we went and asked where they were Then the mains had to be asked for also Accommodating staff but no compensation or free drinks for really poor service Will not be coming back I don't think

Staff were excellent, ambience to. Location, very good right opposite the upper ferntree Gully station, it has a fine history which is on the walls of the restaurant. I went round and read them, fascinating. And some photo graphs of the hotel and area in different eras. Coffee I thought a little bit more expensive than what I was used to hence I went for latte and cake for £10 together. The food was sublime, brushetta, tomato and onion and a vinaigrette dressing( pricing was on par with current values).

We are proud to support this venue by again this year supplying Xmas Lighting to promote the local traders raffle in aid of the Yarra Valley Relief Fund. I enjoyed a great meal there reasonably priced the decore was first class and prices reasonable and portions more than enough to feed a hungry customer lol.

Don't know what's happened to the Royal. Half cooked chips and prawns. No vegetables available and served with chunky coleslaw. Standard has dropped dramatically. However staff were lovely. Obviously under a strict budget.
